    One must remember (if you were alive for that era), that arcade operators would line up the fighting games side-by-side. And on my way to play Time Crisis, or House of the Dead, or Metal Slug, passing by that Soul Calibur cabinet during one of the character's weapon exhibitions was guaranteed to fascinate me enough to have me stand still for almost half a minute. A lot of time, considering in those days I only ever played Tekken at the cabinets. And yet none of the Tekken opening movies, from 2 through to 6, would have me as spellbound as those Soul Calibur weapon exhibitions. It was impressive, as a technical demonstration, as a marketing tactic, and as an exhibition of martial arts (mo-cap) prowess.

    Top class video my man - the "attract mode" is definitely becoming a neglected feature of games, whereas back in those good old days the developers would need to use real creativity and flair to entice the player to drop in a few coins at the arcade. These weapon demos are a great little addition to the usual gameplay demo.

      Thank you - I'm glad you liked it!
      I'd love to see this stuff come back in modern games, for sure! 😁

      Oh dude, huge recommend on Soulcalibur 1 and 2 - both are unparalleled fighting games

    Soulcalibur had a sense of adventure about it. Like the characters were living in a world of their own, and the weapon demos added to that.
    And yeah, 1 is better than 2.

      That's my only gripe with modern fighters - there's plenty of incredible games but they don't often have cool extra stuff like this

    The problem with this mode is if you put it in a modern game the weapon demos alone would take up like 30gb of disc space because of how much animation data they would need to make them look this good with modern graphics.

    • @DreamcastEnjoyer

      i've worked with CoD last year. There's some truth into it. But the head of the department don't want us to optimize the assets when we could've reduce it to 1/6 of its size. It's possible for other games as well but it's been the norm now because bloating the game makes less competition in the disk space.

    I used to play this game 24/7 for like two months until I purchased Shenmue, also Time Crisis, and it went worse lol, I used to leave the exhibition mode while eating or taking a bath I will purchase an arcade and put it along with VF V, which is the best fighting game ever period, also Project Soul is part of Namco, and they just are a group of developers that went away from Sega and stopped working on Virtua Fighter to do Tekken.
    You could customize the scenes of the intro as well, the plot was the best one so far, also the team with Xianghua, Kilik and Maxi was solid, everyone was from the same country but they were all from different places traveling the world after the emperor found out about the previous Soul Edge, that game was sick, the beautiful art, the characters, the music the story mode was amazing full of interesting missions, best game along with SC II and Soul Edge it is a shame what they have done to the games, unfortunately the plot went to be only about Soul Edge, the characters went nowhere and VI is not that good because it is too focused on offense and lacks of interesting timing, even the hits feel weaker at a times, Cassandra however is a beast.

    Man I loved the demos, I would just fire up the game and just watch them show off their stuff. When I was a kid, I went into the backyard, grabbed a stick(s) and did my own weapons demo too. Great video and happy holidays.

    I would spend entire afternoons watching this ones, reading the lore, playing on training mode and so on. The fact that I remember this even after so many years is a testament of how charming it was.
    The music of the first 2 games is amazing too, it gives such a good atmosphere to this presentations and even the fights.
    I know the word "cosy" gets thrown around a lot this days, but those afternoons with the music and presentations were so cosy and relaxing to me, I really miss that.
    Im gonna honor you and my memories by playing and relsxing to the game this week.
    Thanks for the video

    This doesn't get talked about enough. I really hope project soul brings this back to SC VII. They can expand upon it by allowing created characters do these demos as well, along with a mode that allows you to watch from different angles or just have full camera control, a pause button to take pictures of sick poses, the possibilities are endless. I know they can do this especially with how insane the character customization was in SC VI.

    I have to agree, the original Soul Calibur on Dreamcast is the best. I've not played V, but I've played all the others and there's just something missing from them that the original nailed. It really needs a port to Steam and modern consoles.

    • @DreamcastEnjoyer
      @DreamcastEnjoyer  2 дні тому

      I'm so glad it's not just me! Yea the newer ones don't quite nail that special feeling - a port or collection would be great

  • @superscrub9

    Maxi exhibition with double nunchucks. As a kid for years I thought you could unlock double nunchuck maxi.
    Also soul calibur started getting less fun in my opinion when they started adding anime super moves in 4. They kept adding stuff that didn’t improve the game.

    • @DreamcastEnjoyer
      @DreamcastEnjoyer  3 дні тому +3

      Yea that double nunchuck Maxi demo is sick!
      I think you're right - from 4 onwards it seemed to go more over the top and shonen anime style where the first few were a bit more grounded and (relatively) realistic. I think that's why I don't vibe with the newer ones

  • @Nightbanekaizer
    @Nightbanekaizer День тому +1

    Soulcalibur 1, 2, and especially 3 were amazing with most of their modes. But the thing that bugs me is not just the loss of Exhibition mode which I would've especially loved in Soulcalibur 6 since the game has such beautiful visuals and awesome character models, its also the loss of survival mode.
    It pains me that there are ignorant people who think this mode isn't important. It is as I have used it to improve my skills and strategy for staying alive in matches.
    Its necessary especially if you want to accurately tune yourself to survive fighting multiple actual players in a session or tournament. Speaking of, SC3 had tournament mode. Give it back!

    • @DreamcastEnjoyer
      @DreamcastEnjoyer  День тому +1
