Funny you question the parallels to drug addiction. In the original UK version, there's an actual line where the rabbit mentions "you get a little candy, and before you know it, you're on three bags a day".

Originally, this was a french/Britain animated movie named "Pollux et le manège enchanté". In his original version, the movie was an inocent basic little kids movie, their was'nt all this joke, their was'nt an narrator, and the character of Kevin Smith was completly silent.
This dumbass Weinstein got the right and thought that the movie was'nt adapted to american audience (I have no fucking idea where he got this conclusion, because it's a really simple movie, once again, it's for little kids), so he took the team of Hoodwinked to change all the dialogues and make it more Shrek like, and put hundred of useless celebrities in the casting.
So, if you want to see a better version of this thing, go see the UK version or the french version with subtitles.
Also, the way the main characters move is to be faithfull to the original tv show... yes, originally, it was a stop motion TV Show.

This is why you don't Americanize anything from the UK or other European nations. The movie Leap! (or Ballerina) is a lot better in any other language but not English! The voices in the American dub are just horrendous and piss poor. Animat did say to put on subtitles if you have to so you can know what's going on.

23:04 The two children that were trapped on the roundabout with Florence and Mr. Rusty were Coral and Basil. Basil was from the stop-motion series whilst Coral was introduced in the movie (I'm acknowledging the 2005 UK film, of course) alongside Mr. Grimsdale and Soldier Sam. Those three characters that were in the movie would later appear in the 2007 CGI revival series of The Magic Roundabout.

Well second worst....after all the bad things that he did with his Nick shows combined coming in first for me.

I used to love Butch Hartman's character design, but knowing him now, is a major betrayal for me, realizing he's nothing more than a vain, selfish hack!!!

MegaSoulHero I wasn’t happy that Butch Harman worked on this since we know he can do better. This is the guy that gave us Fairies, Ghosts, Secret Agent animals, and monsters.

I have the magic roundabout on dvd (uk version of the film) and I must say this version has had many changes put to it. Examples include how scenes were given unnecessary narration, characters who didn't talk in the uk version do talk in this one and other such editing changes that were not necessary. The lip syncing also doesn't match up with the american voice actors very well as you rightfully said. It was kind of a childhood film of mine but thats probably because I watched it so much as was too young to think about a films quality at the time. I haven't watched it in years and especially after seeing this I would like to think my views on it would be affected, but I would like to think I could still enjoy it as a childhood movie. Great vid as always animat looking forward to the review.
Also I laughed so hard when you were talking about pop culture references just before the skeletons popped out and LITERALLY just spoke in random references hahahaha!

I love how the poster for this movie says in huge bold letters "IT'S LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!"......yeah, said nobody ever.
I remember watching the movie when I was 5 years old. I thought Doogal was cute. But I finally get the point you said that the model only covered the fur and not added the legs. That’s something I found out that animators are too lazy to animate the legs.
Abbimation it wasn’t laziness on the animators part this travesty was based off the original Magic Roundabout shorts and Doogal was originally designed Lito move like that as a giant fuzz ball both in stop motion and CGI
The lack of legs makes Doogal look like some abomination crossed between a dog and caterpillar.
Actually, for the original Television series (which was Stop Motion and Animated in France), Dougal had no legs so he was easier to animate
That music why the scene with characters all like passing out kind of reminded me of The Lion King music in a way that or something you could find in Sing or something

I have a good reason why Dougal has no visible legs
The original Magic Roundabout was made in stop motion at 24 frames per second so the Dougal/Pollux model had no legs and very long hair because it was easier to animate than with legs

Yeah The Thief and the Cobbler (not the original ReCobbled Cut) is better despite similar problems with one of the characters using inner monologue as dialogue.

This is one those movies where you want to see the heroes die.
I highly recommend Dougal And The Blue Cat from 1971 with Eric Thompson and Fenella Fielding.
THAT is the only Dougal/Magic Roundabout movie that is worth anybody's time.
I remember watching the trailer for this movie...and I remember watching the actual movie. The trailer was better. Different as night and day.

Pretty much. I've seen this movie years ago and it is definitely does not hold up.
Ian McKellen is the only actor from the original dub and thus is the only one who wasn't dubbed.
Kylie Minogue was also from the original dub, though her lines were re-recorded in an American accent.
I'm entirely convinced Kevin Smith (yes, *THAT* Kevin Smith- either he did this because his kid liked it, or Weinstein made him do this for him to greenlight either Clerks 2 or Zack and Miri) improvised that whole scene at 18:40. Like, that was probably his last recording, and as soon as they said "CUT", Smith just yelled out "YES!", growled at Harvey Weinstein, and just walked off set, farting with each step, and they just left that in.
It honestly could be much worse- apparently BUTCH FUCKING HARTMAN was involved, and Weinstein managed to somehow piss him off by using absolutely NONE of his ideas.
Seriously, though? This is not only bad, it's downright INFURIATING in how little it uses its surprisingly accomplished stars. Really, how the hell do you have Jon Stewart, Kevin Smith, Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, William H. Macy and fucking WHOOPI GOLDBERG and still come out as banal as this?! I remember liking this as a kid (they even had a McDonald's Happy Meal tie in, for some godforsaken reason), and rewatching this, the only reason i can surmise is that younger me was a fucking dumbass.
Regret watching it. A 4Kids-style movie by a company before scandal.
Believe it or not I recall this being on TV and I think my sister actually liked this movie or at least at one point. I'd like to see someone try to defend this movie. Out of all the animated films I've seen in full, this is probably the worst one

You know what Mat, come to the UK. Watch OUR version. It'll not only help you love the Magic Roundabout and it's characters but HATE this version even more
Weinstein almost tried to ruin Princess Monoke, but Haoyo Miyazaki stop him.
Lessons learned:
1. Nothing is safe from being adapted to a movie, no matter if it's either an old stop motion cartoon or a fashion trending...
2. Plot holes and story inconsistencies can ruin even the best of intentions.
3. References are good but only if wisely used, the same with cameos and easter eggs. Unless the story relies mostly on them like Ready Player One, don't slap them everywhere!
4. Do you have an idea for an animated film that can outstand even the ones made by the big companies? You can do it and, working hard plus a good planning, maybe it can be the most seen indie film on YT or the platform you upload it, aside from the rough diamond of uniqueness of animation...
...but please, unless you don't really appreciate your work the way it is, never give the idea to any animated company, and less to THE WEINSTEIN GUYS!! It's guaranteed that they would alterate the original story to fit it for a certain public (because there are few people like Bakshi who are in the right idea about the existance of mature cartoons or animated films), put Fortnite/Undertale (if there's a skeleton character on your movie. In that case, prepare yourself for the cringe if they put that reference)/meme-trending jokes or toilet puns at least; and obviously, I don't need to mention which *predictable thing* they would try to put into the movie. If your work wants to be serious or at least emulate Disney or Don Bluth's old films, they would ruin that purpose.
Dang, I remember seeing the commercials as a kid and my sister had that snail toy from McDonald's. Glad I never saw it!
I remember watching this movie some years back and actually liking it. It wasn't until much later I found out nearly everybody else apparently hated it...I assumed it was just because the movie took too many liberties from the source material (of which I have yet to see).
EDIT: Turns out the version I watched was the superior UK version. I didn't realize there were two radically different versions of this film.
In the UK it's called The Magic Roundabout and it was one of my favourite movies of all time when I was younger. WHAT did the Americans do to it?! WHAT did they do to the moose!?
Mr Animat, I doubt you'd read this, but you seriously need to check out the original Magic Roundabout movie after this. I'm from England and I remember watching it as a kid, and.....yeah it was still weird to watch even when I was about 8 (since Lord of the Rings was still a big thing at the time, and this essentially just felt like they were trying to do something similar with Magic Roundabout)
but here's the thing; the British actors are about 10 times more charming than the American dub, and even though it's a celebrity cast, all their voices surprisingly fit (even Robbie Williams as Doogal) and there's not bullshit narrator that randomly appears, the moose never talks, and on top of that...ABSOLUTELY NO POP CULTURE REFERENCES or FART JOKES.
It may not be the greatest animated movie in the world, but after this, I bet it would seem like a masterpiece. I guarantee.
If anybody read carefully the history of the television series that this film is loosely based on, then you would understand the massive irony.

Like I mentioned with my previous comment, not only do I think that Sam could be a redeeming character for me, but by a whim, I was doing research on Mega Steve's voice!
This version says that Cory Edwards and John Krasinski provided the voices for the skeletons. But when they combined into Mega Steve, I was trying to identify who plays him!
Apparently I've been hearing Krasinski a bit more!
So what does this have to do with anything? Well, another redeeming factor could be John's take on the character. He can definitely play a sinister sounding character pretty well!
and This is why I Grew up with the UK version, even If I am not from the UK, not from the US. (or maybe did I grew up with thr US version? Nah!)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie ripped off Doogal by having Mr. Blue Sky as the ending song

Ok so I watched the.. well, actually I watched the polish version, as I am polish. But it's the European one, not the one that Weinstein Co. had anything to do with.
So sins commited:
The narrator. The fucking narrator. Through my whole movie experience (and oh boy I LOVED this movie, watched it countless times) I don't recall hearing a narrator, and surely not an elderly lady narrator. This just isn't adding up to the experience this is supposed to give.
The acting. Acting was so emotional, the characters were so full of life in EU version, I don't think I'd ever expect the US version to turn out so shitty. When Doogal calls out Florence as she falls on the snow and an opera is heard in the background, the second ,,Florence.." is waay too little emotional, making the whole scene feel cut out instead of the creep-giving, crescendo down, silencing moment that my version had.
The whole way this amazing piece of art got destroyed and smashed into bits by Weinstein. To whoever made this version, I want to remind you you failed to make use of a good opportunity to make some child have its favourite kid's movie.
Watch the Uk version (or the original French version). Those are waaaaaay better than the American version

Ironically in the French version Pollux (Dougal's French name) is voiced by the late Henri Salvador who was eighty seven years old when Pollux Le Manege Enchanté (The Magic Roundabout in French) came out in February of 2005
