- The 1970s is often overlooked, as far as metal music is concerned. But here are some albums worth checking out. Let's dive into the simple yet strange world of 70s metal. The shocking beginnings of the devil's music. If you like a band, buy their music if you can. I do not own the video clips, they are for educational purposes, as always. I do not currently make any money from this channel, so donations are appreciated. ko-fi.com/whatsinameme
Black Sabbath never gets old for me. I've gone through all kinds of metal phases throughout my life, but I'm always listening to 70s sabbath albums
Black Sabbath in general I love even past the 70s.
70s Sabbath will (for the most part) be awesome and classic as always, but the stuff done in the 80s and even a bit in the 90s I find quite a lot of merit in.
@@MegaMicah12 yeah. Heaven and Hell is great and Dehumanizer is very underrated
@@zerk555we are literally brothers xdddd
When one of my older cousins found out I was getting into metal he gave me his Paranoid CD, was an incredible album.
“Taken By Force” by Scorpions deserves a mention for me, just because of Sails of Charon.
Easily the best of 70s Scorpions by far.
Sweet - Sweet Fanny Adams..
There's some pretty heavy stuff on that album, Set Me Free is a speed metal classic!
Good to see a more opinion related piece on the channel, love the various breakdowns of genres and personalities, but I also love to see what you think about various albums. Good to see a whole video dedicated to it!
Hope you do this with every decade ( that metal was a thing, anyway) awesome content!
I plan to!
@@whatsinameme5258 woooo! Can’t wait to see your choices
I'm most excited to see the one about the 2010s because that is where I am the least knowledgeable
Pleasantly surprised to see a Lord Baltimore mention. Sad Wings of Destiny was more expected but still happy to hear more recognition for my favorite Judas Priest album. Solid list and a couple new albums for me to check out
Check out the band Lucifer's friend. Another super groovy underrated 70s metal band from Germany.
The live performance they did for Beat Club is especially great.

My favorite 70s Sabbath album is Sabotage. But Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are both great second best choice. Also Uriah Heep deserves at least an honorable mention 😊

20. Accept - Accept (1979)
People think I'm crazy because I am frowning all the time.
I'm personally really interested in seeing what you have for the 90s and 00s. There is so much great and influential music released during these times, particularly the 90s when you have Death Metal, Black Metal, and Groove Metal really come into their own, and then the expansion of subgenres like Funeral Doom and European Power Metal.
Happy to see Riot on here, even if only on the honorable mentions part. Rock City is probably one of my favorite albums in general.
Can't believe you don't have more subscribers man. Feels like a channel that should have well over 100-300k. Keep it up and we'd love to see these for the 80s, 90s, 00s, as well!
I'll definitely check some of this 'hidden gems'.
Speaking of which, ever listened to "Volcanic Rock" by Buffalo? It could very well be in this list.
while all of those sound rather dated today, Sabbath still sounds very timeless during the Ozzy era
your content is amazing keep it up 🤘
In my opinion, it is almost impossible for me to limit a decade as rich as the 70s to the 10 best hard rock/metal albums. I'm going to avoid two from the same band, I'm just going to list those that today are still as modern and challenging as before:
Black Sabbath - Sabotage
Led Zeppelin - Presence
Deep Purple - Fireball
Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
UFO - Obsession
Uriah Heep - Look At Yourself
Rush - Caress Of Steel
Slade - Alive I
Sweet - Sweet Fanny Adams
Nazareth - Except No Mercy... It's worth mentioning albums by bands like Blue Oyster Cult, Status Quo, BTO, April Wine, Kiss, Thin Lizzy, Budgie, Scorpions, Montrose, Van Halen, Triumph, Moorhead, could easily be part of a list of 20 albums
Amazing list, I was a Big Black Sabbath and Motorhead fan when I was younger, Loved the addition of Legend and Rush been needing some new music in the mix. If it's not too much to ask, for your 1980s give a listen to Cirith Ungol, they have some amaazing albums all throughout the decade starting with their first album Frost and Fire.
Will do! They actually had a release from 1978 that I listened to in preparation for this video, but I am guessing their later stuff will be better.
@@whatsinameme5258 oh so much better, their 1978 orange album though has some of my fav tracks their best work is their later albums.
Hey Hey! Talk about something to watch during breaks at school!
Btw, will you cover previous grief circle from between 1890 to 1940? That would interesting
A lot of bangers here, got a lot to check out in the near future lol
Ufo and Scorpions were great rock/metal bands in the seventies, instead of putting some obscure bands on your list you could put these two bands that i mentioned, these two bands are not even on your honorable list, Ufo and Scorpions guitar players, Michael Schenker who was a guitar player for both bands and Uli Jon Roth influenced some of the most famous metal guitar players like Kirk Hammet, Michael Amott and Marty Friedman just to name a few, a lot of metal bands that started in the eighties grew up on Ufo and Scorpions, a lot of metal bands covered songs of Ufo and Scorpions, Ufo and Scorpions should be on the list along with Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.
street singer by clear light is what i would consider the first doom metal song its the heaviest song of the 60s by far
Yes, I looked into the 60s in prep for this, but there just isn't enough material to make a list like this. Thanks for that suggestion though. New to me. Pretty heavy for the 60s.
@@whatsinameme5258 actually on spotify i found a playlist called proto metal classics which is where i found that song
TRES Heavy
Very happy to see some hidden gems on here, especially with Sorcery and Sir Lord Baltimore.
On that note, what were your thoughts on Night Sun's album *Mournin'* (if you managed to listen to it)?
Just gave it a listen. Its pretty unique for 1972, thats for sure. Very Prog, but a bit Proto Metal too.
@@whatsinameme5258 Nice! I'm glad you did.
Gonna be very curious what you will have to say with the 80s, as there is a lot of good you can find that doesn't even sound dated.
I love eternal champion cover of the destroyer
I just remembered this, but there is one band this year that released an album that kind of is a sort of Proto-Metal esque.

This shit goes hard
I'm searching for '70s Doom Metal albums, anyone knows a good recomendation? More like Sabbath sound.
They were both formed at the tail end of the 70s and didn't really release anything until the early 80s, but Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar may be to your liking.
Wicked Lady's Psychotic Overkill and Bedemon's demo tracks!!
Black Sabbath are not the creators of Heavy Metal simply because Geezer Butler said: "We always loved Zeppelin in them days, sitting round on the floor smoking dope and listening to that first album,” Butler says. “So when Tony came up with the riff to ‘Paranoid’ me and Ozzy spotted it immediately and went: ‘Naw, we can’t do that!’
Giving the title of Heavy Metal creators to Black Sabbath instead of Led Zeppelin is clearly wrong!
Including Queen or Rush on your list and excluding Led Zeppelin or Steppenwolf I guess you are entitled to your opinion 😂
At this point I don't know what is Heavy Metal and Proto-Metal talking about this classic age of the early 70's (1970-1974) too confusing
Easiest way to tell them apart is that Heavy Metal is the 80s sound and Proto-Metal is the 70s sound. Heavy Metal (The NWOBHM sound) takes the Black Sabbath Doom Metal sound, and takes inspiration from Hard Rock and Punk Rock. Very focused on hard hitting riffs. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Diamond Head, and Angelwitch are some examples. Proto-Metal is more Blues Rock + Prog Rock. Borders on being Doom Metal, but not quite, and is more experimental. Vocals are also a bit different. Heavy Metal focuses on the shrill high vocals, whereas Proto-Metal CAN have shrill high screams, but mostly features raspy singing more akin to Motorhead than Judas Priest, and also just normal rock style singing.
@@whatsinameme5258 No way! So you're meaning that Black Sabbath could be considered as a Proto-Metal band?! I'm not really sure but in their first two albums there are so many Hard rock and Blues influences and also you can find some similarities between Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. And talking about Led Zeppelin, in your video you put the cover of their debut album and the text "Proto-Metal" so... Led Zeppelin is Proto- Metal?
And it's more confusing and horrible when you search Heavy Metal albums of the early 70's and one part of them are "Heavy Metal" and another part are 'Proto-Metal'. PD: WTF is Heavy Psych
@@richtercastillo6337 Led Zeppelin is Proto Metal for sure. Black Sabbath I'd say is Doom Metal, which is to say the first TRUE metal genre. But Doom and Proto Metal are pretty similar. If something is labelled "Heavy Psych" it's likely Proto-Metal.
@@whatsinameme5258 U Know, I'm gonna make a board of Heavy metal and Proto-Metal of the Early 70's (1970-1975)
Heavy Metal. Proto-Metal
Black Sabbath. Sir lord Baltimore
Deep Purple. Hard Stuff
Led Zeppelin 70-71 Led Zeppelin 69
Blue Öyster Cult. Stray
Kiss. Atomic Rooster
Aerosmith. Budgie
UFO 74-75 UFO 71-72
Queen. Captain Beyond
AC/DC. Buffalo
Nazareth Flower travellin' band
Scorpions 74-75 Scorpions 72
Rainbow. Lucifer's friend
Thin Lizzy 75. Leaf Hound
Montrose (Idk). Mountain
Rush. Toad
Pentagram Cactus
Moxy Jerusalem
Tell me your opinion about my board.
@@richtercastillo6337 The Proto Metal side seems correct. Though I don't know every band. Heavy Metal side has a mix of stuff. For instance, I'd just consider ACDC and Kiss to be Hard Rock. There really wasn't much Heavy Metal in the 70s. (unless you mean it in the broad sense rather than the NWOBHM sound)
Speed metal split into thrash metal and power metal, not black metal. Black metal(well, the second wage, aka the Norwegian black meta, aka the black metal everyone thinks of) very much split off of death metal, in a rebellion against it.
Stained Class is definitely better than Sad Wings of Destiny
I would really like to see Top 10 [insert metal genre] of the 70's, 80's etc.. But dont speedrun them as you got time
By don't speedrunning them i mean that you should not only focus on this series and get it done too early as you may find other albums randomly or just because it's annoying to see the same type of content for months
The Dust album cover is by Frank Frazetta and it's about Conan.
