Good video, if it's only about North America and 1st wave thrash ... Where is the more filthy, dirty, aggressive teutonic/German thrash? Where is Sepultura? Hmmm...
There are quite a few song that could be considered “proto-thrash” or “proto-speed”. Symptoms of the Universe and Stone Cold Crazy is a great example, but there are plenty of other songs worth mentioning such as Breadfan by Budgie, Fireball by Deep Purple, He’s a Woman She’s a Man by Scorpions, etc.
I have heard Anthrax called many things, but "sloppy" isn't one of them. Among the tightest drummers and rhythm guitarists in any genre of metal. Also, even though Scott Ian was vocal about his love of New York Hardcore, I don't think the crossover thrash mantle belongs with Anthrax. While full of the rapid, chromatic riffs of 80s hardcore acts like D. R. I. or Cryptic Slaughter, the delivery of those riffs comes with more density in the guitar tone and the vocals are very different from other bands in that subgenre. I hope you can possibly revisit this genre and discuss the role bands like Raven, Anvil and Venom had in the development of thrash as we know it today. Thanks for the engaging and insightful content!
I was getting kind of frustrated with the lack of Megadeth attention on this one until the end lmao. Great video, but I was sad to see you didn't include German thrash bands like Sodom (a personal favorite of mine).

Death-thrash, like the Beneath the Remains and Arise eras of Sepultura, are easily the most intense thrash albums I have heard. It's not really death metal, but rhythmically as well as tone in the guitars and bass it stands out as more brutal and with more prominence of double-bass drums than the overwhelming majority of thrash metal.
Testament is a great example of the more brutal thrash you mentioned as a subgenre. In the late 90s, they even started diving into a blend between death metal and groove metal. Their album Demonic has death and groove metal all over it and it sounds awesome.
I would argue that thrash always was a fusion of punk and metal from the word go. Nobody I ever knew used the term crossover thrash in the 80s. Even metalica covered the misfits.
@@whatsinameme5258 ok. I just don't remember anybody in my neck of the woods calling it that.I guess then you would consider bands like D.R.I. the Circle Jerks to be in that category. Maybe Anthrax too. Anyway it was good content, I liked the video. Cheers.

Good video Though i have to say the Mention of Venom and Motörhead would have been nice Motörhead hugely influenced the bands especially with Double Bass drumming and the 3 more rythmic style they had especially with lemmys kinda thrashy Bass playing And honestly i would say Stone Cold Crazy isn’t a proto thrash song but more so the first true Speed Metal song And i would more so say Venom while also being considered the original 1st wave Black Metal Band was the first true thrash Band because they basically crossed over from Speed Metal into Extreme/Thrash Metal/Black Metal With songs especially like "Black Metal" and "Sons of Satan".
I can definitely see why you would say Venom is thrash, from an instrumentation standpoint at least. Lyrically and thematically it has little in common with the others though. I think its moreso that both Metallica and Venom were both influenced by Motorhead, but one took the sound towards thrash, and the other towards black metal. I can definitely mention them when I get around to Black Metal though.
You didn't even mention that the whole thrash metal genre is a mixture of fast heavy metal and punk as well. Misfits and Black Flag were the influences for Metallica along with Diamond Head and Deep Purple. Metallica incorporated all this into their music which led to thrash.
Your videos always make me think about what category some bands would fall into, if one had to choose. Looking back, Sepultura seemed like death metal to me because of the harsh/ growling vocals, but is this enough to make it death metal? I'm not sure. I think Sepultura are way better than any of the big four.
You talked about all of the big four, but only talked about Anthrax in th3 context of crossover thrash, even though Among the Living is considered one of the best thrash albums.

The thrash metal genre did not really get its name by just "the way they play the instruments". Some writer in a metal magazine wrote about the upcoming genre and mentioned Anthrax's song "Metal Trashing Mad". After that he explaines about how accurate that song name was with how it sounds how they play their instruments and ended up calling it "Thrash Metal".
Yeah thrash metal can be a cool genre to listen to sometimes but I prefer Metalcore and Death metal so I'm always more drawn generally to death thrash. Also, they aren't a death thrash band but the band Revenant made a thrash album back in the day and it's among my favorites. The album has some slight prog elements and it's definitely in my mind extremely underrated

In your groove metal video, you mentioned that groove metal is sometimes dismissively referred to as "American metal." Upon reflection, if any metal genre deserves this title, it's got to be thrash. With a few notable exceptions, the biggest and notable bands are all Americans. The overall ideology is inherently American - a distrust of state power, assertion of individual liberty against a hostile world, preoccupation with historical evils committed in the name of the collective, and opposition to foreign military adventurism. It's fast, loud, hard, and often angry, though its heart is in the right place. It always roots for the underdog. It's shares with punk the desire to shove an upright middle finger in the face of the evils of the world, but is largely freed from punk's penchant for the utopian ideologies of the old world. Hell, even the clothing style associated with thrash is blue collar Americana to the core. If black and viking metal are reflections of the Nordic character, thrash is uniquely reflective of the American one. I, for one, would be proud to refer to the genre as "American metal."
