Lots of praise in the comments for this video already, but I really wanted to say Quentin really opened up here & touched on a lot of fascinating topics. And kudos to Ben for leading the interview but still letting Quentin talk, giving him space to show off his passion. I've seen so many interviewers over the years only letting Quentin get in "soundbites" or cutting him off. Great stuff!

This was a huge step up for What the Flick to show that they can make a case for their channel as a 'sophisticated movie review' show and Tarantino really showed a lot of restraint this time around. I think a lot of it comes from Tarantino and Mankiewicz having a respect for each other too, what with Mankiewicz's involvement with Turner Classic Movies and of course his family legacy. They are people who know about classic cinema and its history/importance, unlike a lot of other interviewers Tarantino has likely been involved with.

Quentin Tarantino is a straight up boss. His movies are legendary, he uses his influence in a legit way for good causes, and he seems like a straight up man. One of our best Americans.

Well, the comment was that Tarantino is the best living director, and Scorsese's still alive. The Coen brothers are a little more reliable and less self-indulgent than Tarantino, and PTA rules.
This is hands down my favourite interview on UA-cam! When I saw this flash up on my twitter feed (Cenk tweeted it out), I couldn't believe it was true, TYT are officially BIG TIMERS now! Even TV stations can't get Quentin Tarantino to sit down for 10 minutes never mind a full fucking hour! QT is one of only a handful of film directors I know the name of, and he's 100% my favourite. I've been so excited to the see the hateful eight, this has just added to it.
Tarantino is a movie geek. There isn't anyone in Hollywood I can relate to better. I directed The Hobbit at the age of 9 using my friends, without knowing what a director was. My first job was as an usher in a movie theater. I do things that annoy the average person, such as, watching a movie over and over again, because I'm in the deep analytical mode. I put movies on and turn the picture off and just listen to the dialogue. Frank Frazetta was my favorite artist, and I taught myself charcoal sketching looking at his pictures. Hemingway is my favorite author and basically since I slept through High School, I emulated Hemingway whenever I had to write a short story. I got straight A's in English. I guess it worked. I graduated at the bottom of my class, taught myself Electronic Engineering and worked in the telecommunications field as the lead field engineer for a major carrier in one of the biggest markets in America. Anyway, This sounds like my resume, but aside from Stanley Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino is one of the greatest directors in Hollywood and is absolutely, the best writer of dialogue.
Really enjoyed the interview, and then 30 minutes in, It really kicked in, you shifted into overdrive. You really did a service and talked about an important issue in a thoughtful way. Thank you.

I never understood why people want everything short and to the point. It's the age of long form media. The big TV shows nowadays are at least 40-60 minutes long per episode, many podcast can easily reach 4-5 hours long, etc. I would choose to watch this hour long interview over a 10 minute cut every day of the week.

I remember being disappointed after watching the Kill Bills that we never got to see what happened to Vivica Fox/Copperhead's little girl. I didn't know there would be a third movie, but now it makes sense...
My best friend actually went to a movie with Tarantino. He described him thusly. First, he said that he was "just a regular guy," none of that "I'm a famous director" attitude whatsoever. Two, he was absolutely crazy about movies. And three, as they watched the movie together, he had a rather bizarre inclination to laugh out loud at the serious parts of the film, and be stony silent at most of the funny parts, which he found rather "odd." He said that some times his laughter would be so loud that a few theater patrons would apparently yell out their displeasure at the disruption, not realizing that they were telling Quentin Tarantino to "shut the hell up!!" I thought that was the absolutely most hilarious recollection of all.
It's nice to see Tarantino not be as snobby as he was about the projection. He's more understanding and respectful about digital projection and is more clear about his love of the 70 mm.

That would be a pretty ballsy and direct approach. And you know for sure that the police would definitely boycott and sabotage that one like North Korea for the interview. They don't want the truth to be revealed they're scared that the people will lose trust in the police. 😂
While I agree that police brutality is a horrible problem, it is talked about like it is a common occurrence, which it isn’t. There are more pressing issues, but I don’t view Tarantino as the type that should do that sort of subject matter to begin with.

I was a "kid" until I saw Reservoir Dogs at age 14. Embarrassingly terrified of even lame pg-13 horror flicks. But listening to that dialogue around tipping early on....oof. Sucked me in. Mr. Orange (Tim Roth) pleading to be taken to hospital while bleeding out in the back of that car? Something clicked- I was never scared of another film again. I started to appreciate 'film' in a whole new light. A bomb exploded and my mind just went "OH that's what a good movie is". Paid way more attention to movies from that point on and became way harsher with my criticism, probably obnoxiously so. Quentin's work absolutely inspired a passion. He is single-handedly responsible for my inability to appreciate all those Marvel movies.

Fantastic interview by Ben and so insightful by Quentin.Decades from now this will be viewed by real movie fans.How unfortunate we don't have something like this with Howard Hawks,John Ford or John Huston to name a few.There are clips of the great directors of the past but I feel QT real opened up here and let the conversation flow in an unguarded manner.
It took me a couple of sittings to watch this long ass interview, but hey it's Quentin..fuckin..Taran..fuckin..tino! When I first heard of Tarantino joining the protests I was a bit cynical. After all it is not unusual for celebrities to join in on trending topics/issues for PR. This interview was interesting and insightful. I learned a bit about the man and understood his point of views and the way he goes on about doing his craft. The Hateful Eight looks like a good movie and What The flick raised their game with this interview.

I wish Quentin Tarantino would do a movie about police brutality. He is outspoken about it and it is a subject that needs to be addressed.
That would be a pretty ballsy and direct approach. And you know for sure that the police would definitely boycott and sabotage that one like North Korea for the interview. They don't want the truth to be revealed they're scared that the people will lose trust in the police. 😂
While I agree that police brutality is a horrible problem, it is talked about like it is a common occurrence, which it isn’t. There are more pressing issues, but I don’t view Tarantino as the type that should do that sort of subject matter to begin with.

It’s common for other people...but not for you. You say it isn’t common, but that because YOU don’t experience it. And you know exactly why.
Some people experience it constantly. But you don’t believe it, and can’t imagine it, and so you just believe it’s not a big deal. But that’s because you’re white.

Tarantino is such a cool and brilliant person. To me, the great film maker of our time. Also, he writes DAMN good dialogue.
I was a "kid" until I saw Reservoir Dogs at age 14. Embarrassingly terrified of even lame pg-13 horror flicks. But listening to that dialogue around tipping early on....oof. Sucked me in. Mr. Orange (Tim Roth) pleading to be taken to hospital while bleeding out in the back of that car? Something clicked- I was never scared of another film again. I started to appreciate 'film' in a whole new light. A bomb exploded and my mind just went "OH that's what a good movie is".
Paid way more attention to movies from that point on and became way harsher with my criticism, probably obnoxiously so. Quentin's work absolutely inspired a passion. He is single-handedly responsible for my inability to appreciate all those Marvel movies.

And here we are with the police brutality thing. The convo at 30:00 on resonates today. I just love what QT says. Can imagine he's saying the same now. Great interview all round too.
Fantastic interview by Ben and so insightful by Quentin.Decades from now this will be viewed by real movie fans.How unfortunate we don't have something like this with Howard Hawks,John Ford or John Huston to name a few.There are clips of the great directors of the past but I feel QT real opened up here and let the conversation flow in an unguarded manner.
Quentin Tarantino is the quirky weird guy that we all wish we could have as our best friend, cause he's always interesting.
I can't remember who said it but it was a well known writer who said " be bad , be good , be stupid , be smart but don't ever be boring".
I know a lot of people have commented on this already but this was a great job of interviewing by Ben. Awesome watch

When I first heard of Tarantino joining the protests I was a bit cynical. After all it is not unusual for celebrities to join in on trending topics/issues for PR.
This interview was interesting and insightful. I learned a bit about the man and understood his point of views and the way he goes on about doing his craft.
The Hateful Eight looks like a good movie and What The flick raised their game with this interview.
I hope Tarantino never stops making movies.
They are not flawless, but every one of his movies is a cinematic treat and an experience to savour.
