Nobody ever asks Tarantino to expand on how much he admires Elmore Leonard, and how much Leonard's work has influenced his. I feel bad for Tarantino fans who have never read Leonard. His books influence Tarantino's films more than the films Tarantino samples from.

Great interview! Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was my #1 for 2019, so I especially enjoyed this conversation. The movie has so many layers and subtext that even on my 5th viewing I still pick things up. PS: The exclusive Mad Magazine issue only comes in the 4k/Blu-ray Collector's Edition, NOT the standard Blu-ray as Tarantino states in the interview.
Nice interview. Great getting to hear Tarantino actually just talk. Truly a legend. It was pretty apparent that the interviewers were trying their hardest not to make it obvious how starstruck they were and to not come off as just a couple giddy fans. I definitely cringed a little at the tattoo bit and the begging Quentin not to retire bit toward the end. Also could have done without the "behind-the-interview" part at the end-it's not exactly embarrassing per se but it's just kind of like.. own it guys. I mean, don't be fake or anything but you don't need to advertise how big of a deal this is for you, just be fucking cool. If I were you, I'd fucking want to die at the thought of Quentin Tarantino ever hearing that post-interview part.
He won't win any Best Picture Oscars... He could probably win the Best Original Screenplay one but Hollywood prefers saucy, melodramatic PC mediocrity over anything that Tarantino puts his label on.
Great interview. Love OUATIH. I absolutely loved the ending. It was releasing watching Cliff simply destroy the murderers (along with an awesome PitBull 😄. ). It was a release of stored aggression for so many people against those criminals. I was born shortly after the Murders. But growing up all I heard was how it changed America. Q gave us back that America- if at least in a Movie. I love how Q explains how the ending basically neuters Manson and the family. There needs to be a short clip in his next movie showing the 3 way fight between Leo, Brad and Leo’s “wife” on who kept the dog after Cliff got out of hospital 🤣🤣
Loved the conversation about the digital V film. I never thought I'd hear that conversation with a professional. I thought I was the only one noticing that old school film has a MOVIE look to it. Digital looks almost too clean. Great interview I think people's take on Hollywood in the future about now, will be virtue signalling. Scared to offend. We are so lucky that Quentin Tarantino was already established and making his own films under his own rules. Leave it to people giving permission in Hollywood and you are getting virtue signalling crap

Such a great interview! I love listening to QT. I already heard the interview but not this long one. So glad I listed ed again. In thinking about why he likes you guys it’s pretty obvious you are very intelligent professional people who love film and QT. You have good questions and you are respectful and professional. I also think being a visual artist who don’t like to have his picture taken (nor do I) I think he likes podcasts without the camera and the ability to go long and deep on ideas. Great job guys. Love your work.
It’s clear Quentin likes the bombastic nature of film rather than the subtlety, hence his preference of film over digital (a more complicated vs a more simple process) and Spectre over Skyfall (the former being more schlock and action and the latter being more stripped down character drama). ALSO interesting that both of those choices go against Roger Deakins who shoots digital and was the cinematographer for Skyfall.
I love that he is such a fanboy of Mad Magazine that he sounded a bit surprised that they were thrilled with the idea of collabing with him (aka- arguably the most legendary film maker of all time) at the over-the-hill state that they were in at the time
20:40 "and I would really enjoy showing you my lighting process especially in front of allllll my frieeeends but..."😹😹😹 I actually loved this movie!!!!✨
QUENTIN MAKES A REFERENCE TO AN OLD MOVIE HE LOVED ABOUT EVERY 8 MINUTES, ON AVERAGE. SOME ARE LITTLE B-MOVIES FROM THE 50'S THRU THE PRESENT DAY AND I'M SO PROUD THAT I GET ALMOST ALL OF THEM...OR AT LEAST 90 PER CENT...
I met him at a signing years ago and pretty much everyone had a few minutes with him to sign stuff (got the Death Proof scrip signed) and when I finally got to him in about 5 minutes he mentioned a tee shirt I was wearing for some old sci-fi film pointed at it (really cheesy B movie ‘Mark of the Astro-Zombies) and went off on a tangent about the film, director, films it was like and the era it came out and talked about all sorts of stuff in that brief time, I said to him I’d love to see him tackle a proper sci-fi film and he said “well.. I do like the genre but I’ve got a little WW2 film I think I’ll work on next” he then put his hand over his mouth and said “Opps.. I’ve said too much already” and laughed, honestly I think he’s just a really down to earth guy and as a director he hasn’t made a bad film yet.. it will be interesting to see what he does for his final movie but I can’t see him staying away from making more..
@@thingshappen4062 I actually think he has evolved alot. Gilbert Grape was great, but in most occaisons his newer performances are stronger than the older. The Revenant, Django and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood were all amazing on Leo's part. Watching his older work I agree with your statement. It feels like he is playing himself in all of them. I don't understand why they don't talk with highly praise and absolute adoration about Jackie Brown... Jackie Brown for me is perfect in every sense a movie can be - acting, directing, casting, visually, soundtrack,... simply perfect... It's easily his top 3 films.
a friend of mine gave me a free pass, and I went and saw it. possibly my favorite QT film, 'Jackie Brown'. I even saw DeNiro put in a good acting performance, and it had been years since I really thought he was as good as he used to be (except for comedies, which he really does well). a documentary I just saw, points out that the airport corridor wall in 'Once upon a time in HOLLYWOOD' is actually re-created exactly, from 'Jackie Brown'. so he must regard it highly. and according to wikipedia, Elmore Leonard, who wrote Rum Punch, which JB was based on, said it was his favorite presentation of his literary work on film, out of 26 pictures. THAT says something.
Should’ve asked him about Kill Bill vol 3 . He and Uma just met a few weeks ago to discuss it! His biggest regret of his career was when he pressured Uma into doing a stunt that seriously injured her, and this is the opportunity to make it right and repair their friendship.
I chanced upon this review with my favourite writer/director of all time and it's by far the best I've ever heard. Love you guys and to the tattooed dude, the best tat I've ever saw was one of the orca boat out of 'jaws'. Just a thought.
Once upon a time in hollywood isn’t “a fun what-if”. Basterds was a fun what-if. This movie was a heart felt and deep what if. It wasn’t just entertainment. He was wielding the power of film to right a terrible wrong.
Pretty sure QT prefers the IB scene over the TR scene because he cast it and directed it himself. It's all his. The greatness of the TR scene always must be shared with Tony Scott.
Feels like a bit of an insult to Roger Deakins to say that he doesn't want to spend the time lighting. If you watch Deakins on the set of something like Bladerunner 2049 you'll know that is just factually incorrect. Some of those sets were the most complicated lighting set ups in recent history and to say anything else does a disservice to Deakins and the genius of his craft.
"and I would really enjoy showing you my lighting process especially in front of allllll my frieeeends but..."😹😹😹 Felt a little like that when he said that haha. For the record I loved this movie!

It was a great companion during my breaks at work. Thank you very much, wonderful podcast.
I’m so happy I stumbled on this interview . Best damn interview for a Tarantino fan!
Rick Dalton would've played Jake Gittes in Chinatown.
Somebody should make an edit of that using shutter island’s leo
Sure would!
But no work for Cliff :(
@Matt Helm But I don't recall any stunts for him in chinatown
I just made the connexion with the director haha, i'm a bit slow today...
By far the best interview I ever heard with Tarantino!!
Nobody ever asks Tarantino to expand on how much he admires Elmore Leonard, and how much Leonard's work has influenced his. I feel bad for Tarantino fans who have never read Leonard. His books influence Tarantino's films more than the films Tarantino samples from.
Once upon a time in Hollywood is the best film of all time, it's the movie I have been waiting all my life for, I still have the feeling it was made especially for me.
Once upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite Quentin Tarantino movie! He brought so much life into this movie. 🎥
Easily his worst movie
OMG are u fr serious ? That's funny bc that's probably my most LEAST favorite flick QT has been involved in creating out of ALL the rest..like if I had to make a list of QT films best to worst in chronological order type of thing like I HAVE to say I am really thinking that it's the WORST one but PLEASE pray tell as to WHY ? U love it so much? What is in it to YOU, that plays out so perfectedly & why? Do u personally believe that it was made just for you? Like change my MIND ...🤷
@aprillong everyone has different tastes but even skillfully and craftsmanship of the film is not his worst... but if ur talking about story-wise or entertainment wise it's his worst then yea I can see your point of view cause everyone's tastes are different. But it being his worst film is inaccurate.
Best filmmaker of our times!
"I've had some good veggie burgers" -Quentin
Quentin I think JJ may be your friend...are ye hanging with Earth Alliance people
You gotta have him back on after he wins his well deserrved Oscar
He won't win any Best Picture Oscars... He could probably win the Best Original Screenplay one but Hollywood prefers saucy, melodramatic PC mediocrity over anything that Tarantino puts his label on.
@@hasselett Nah... It'll be the Irishman.
@Chokwe best picture I mean
And I Should be Joker but we all know the academy are a bunch of cucks

Quentin as a great filmmaker has such a passion for film. Hardly any ego. I appreciate that about him.
Quentin hits the nail on the head when it comes to digital vs film.
Quite the opposite actually. I love QT but his opinion on Deakin's lighting is completely uninformed.
Loved the conversation about the digital V film. I never thought I'd hear that conversation with a professional. I thought I was the only one noticing that old school film has a MOVIE look to it. Digital looks almost too clean.
Great interview
I think people's take on Hollywood in the future about now, will be virtue signalling. Scared to offend. We are so lucky that Quentin Tarantino was already established and making his own films under his own rules. Leave it to people giving permission in Hollywood and you are getting virtue signalling crap
I love Q's enthusiasm about film. One of the best!
Quentin Tarantino is brilliant. Great interview. Thanks for sharing 👌👍
QT comes across as a super nice guy , that makes him more my favorite director of all time.
I was doing an overnight shift at a convenience store listening to this interview.
Im so glad it got recommended! Hearing that tattoo part made me so happy, i have the line "YOU CAN HAVE THIS ONE, COWGIRL" (from Pulp Fiction) tattood on my forearm
Great fkn interview, just subbed
Quentin should make his own seperate channel
Where he'll b interviewing scorcese, ridley scott, nolan or vellnueive
Great interview!!!Loved the whole thing!!! And Once Upon A Time....was exceptional!!!!
I love qt, but he was wrong about Roger, he does all of his lighting on set, heson record saying that he doesnt like to wait for dailies to finaly see what the image is, and projection is a whole other topic
This was a long shot film so he must've lost a lot of control. And he's also a brash person so let him get what he gets from another brash fella
@@vb8428 He's always done all of his lighting on set. I mean it's kinda his signature... Jessie James... Skyfall... Sicario...
He certainly is humble
Best Tarantino interview I've listened to.
I love that he is such a fanboy of Mad Magazine that he sounded a bit surprised that they were thrilled with the idea of collabing with him (aka- arguably the most legendary film maker of all time) at the over-the-hill state that they were in at the time
that was pretty good. Love Quentin
This interview is a gift!!! Thank you very much guys!!!
20:40 "and I would really enjoy showing you my lighting process especially in front of allllll my frieeeends but..."😹😹😹
I actually loved this movie!!!!✨
QUENTIN MAKES A REFERENCE TO AN OLD MOVIE HE LOVED ABOUT EVERY 8 MINUTES, ON AVERAGE. SOME ARE LITTLE B-MOVIES FROM THE 50'S THRU THE PRESENT DAY AND I'M SO PROUD THAT I GET ALMOST ALL OF THEM...OR AT LEAST 90 PER CENT...
Take a shot every time Quentin says "alright".
...Or don't if you don't feel like going to the emergency room today.
or when he says ummm... you'll need a liver transplant
Thank you very much for this
Loved your questions , the back and forth, all of it . Subscribed .
Love Quentin movies! I hope if he does only does 10 films, I hope he starts writing books!
This is incredible. Thank you to all involved 🤙🏾
One of the best/most interesting podcasts I’ve ever heard.
Quentin Tarantino has made a lot of people happy 🎬
"Leonardo Di-FUCKEN-Caprio!!" 😂
Minus Gilbert Grape, every other actor around him is so much better than he is. He can get your movie made but there are better actors out there.
His new stuff is amazing.
@@BenDover-kt8wm I agree with you . He rode the wave for a little bit but something switched and hes been turning it up to 11 for the last few films hes made and I'm here for it .
Amazing Interview.Thank you.
Excellent interview! Thank you!
I wish you fellows had asked him about Bruce Lee and how he approached his portrayal, either way this was a wonderful interview! Great questions from all you guys :)
Tremendous interview boys, well done
Great interview. I can listen to him all day
Pretty sure QT prefers the IB scene over the TR scene because he cast it and directed it himself. It's all his.
The greatness of the TR scene always must be shared with Tony Scott.
Is this code language now or what?
@@Xandru3434 TR is True Romance and IB is Inglorious Basterds I think.

Fantastic conversation, and a real treat to listen to. Thanks for this!
@@contorta960 ha! I thought the same thing!
...but Bladerunner 2049 was terrible and too long.
@@softbatch1 I thought Blade Runner 2049 was damn good. The original will always be the best imo
