Watched the full vid and as a person that's refreshed a 2.5 you unfortunately won't gain much more than this. Not to knock this motor though because she was never made to pass cars on the interstate, she shines when your oil filter falls off 3 miles from pavement and you can still get her home with nothing but pure astonishment and hopes of not having to pay more for a tow than it would cost to buy a new Jeep. Absolutely love this vid!
Yeah I got a fresh reman motor put in with header and intake manifold gasket matched to 4.0 throttle body and it didn't gain much. I gained about 2mph top speed. I was able to hit 92? Maybe 94? Going on a slight downhill but very long stretch of I-10 😂. I'm interested to see what 4.56 gears would do for it.
I hit 85 on I4 for 2 hours straight at 3700rpm with my 2000 2.5l it’s on 31 ko2 all terrains with a 2 inch lift. The magic is in the re-gear, I did 4.56 front and rear.
@@TechnicianRed my foot isn’t all the way to the floor but it’s about 80% throttle. But it is a comfortable speed for me in high way traffic, just keep in mind it does take some time to get up to that speed. But I don’t hesitate to hop on the highway anymore after re-gearing.
@@TechnicianRed also I recently just changed all the fluids in my drivetrain and engine and differentials, and the thicker new fluid is causing enough resistance that the four-cylinder is struggling above 70 in 5th gear but I still managed to hit 85 with the wind neutral after the fluids had heated up all the way. I was perplexed by this for a while until I narrowed it down to just thick fluids.
I just had my 2.5 engine SE rebuilt. So I'm still in the break in phase for the motor. I have 400+ miles so far. Will wait till 1,000 miles before I get on the freeway to see how she does with freeway speeds.
I am putting an Autozone reman engine in with 4.0 TB (port matched to intake), header, and higher flowing muffler next weekend. Hopefully pickup atleast 10% from this worn motor.
When my 98 was still in one piece I managed to hit 90 on flat ground with 31" tires and the stock 3.08 gear. I hated doing that since the engine simply didn't sound happy. I really don't like spinning the 4.0 past 4k rpm. at most.
Heh. Try doing it in a YJ. I hit 71 MPH downhill on 33s, no lift with stock 4.10s, 2.5L/AX5 with 310,000 miles with a collapsed lifter, bad exhaust leak, and probably a slacked chain to boot. Thing sounds like it's firing a salvo of 16" rounds à la USS Missouri when it backfires and shoots fireballs out of the muffler, but it's a trooper.
The part where he says “come on you piece of shit” lmfao. I have the same 2.5 in a 1999 TJ. I just put a new 2.5 in it and put 4.88 gears in her. Also put a cold air intake with a set of headers on it. I just recently went through the break in stage and took her out yesterday actually and was able to get up to 77 mph in 5th gear. It does feel like she has more to give but my ass isn’t chancing it. She’s on 33’s and that mess gets a little scary going that fast in a box basically lol.
My 95 2.5 had a 5sp tranny and with 33” 12.50x15 5th is useless unless it’s flat. Thinking of going to 31.10.50x15’s to it will behave better on the hwy
Mine is lucky to achieve 65mph going downhill with 33's. I didn't buy it for speed or highway travel. I wanted the lighter motor to get places the heavier Jeeps struggle with.😅
Before I see the results I've owned a 97 2.5 TJ since 02 and this should be good🤣 you should do a vid of the people behind you on the highway with 31s and an ATV strapped to a trailer that's strapped to your trusty steed going uphill with the wind blowing the wrong way. If you're looking for roadrage then......🤡
Mine will hit 100 mph no problem. But there's no point and it's revving the piss out of it. I'm running a t3 turbo on my 2.5 though so mines got a little more ass than usual. I cruise 65-70 usually. Now i don't slow down for hills though.😊
Just 4th. You will never achieve max speed in overdrive. The speed would have started falling FAST had I engaged 5th gear. Would likely level out at about 75 max in 5th.
Gotcha. I’m just trying to gauge what rpm’s would be like. I just got a tj and haven’t gotten plates for it yet so I wanted to see what 5th gear would be like
My question is how are your gears so freaking long like seriously if I got to 15 I would be bouncing the gauge fully in the ketchup and you out here doing 30 at redline what is this
People who assume engines cannot withstand higher revs make no sense to me. These engines make their peak power at higher rpms. Their powerbands are meant to Rev higher. Stop treating cars like they're infant children lmao
I have the 4.0 with a 4 inch lift........ and its no race car, believe me. It great offroad with all the low end torque but city traffic??? yeah... its not that great. My old minivan daily driver is much faster.... The 2.5, you have even less horsepower, and you dont even get the low end torque for off road.... its like the worst of both worlds.
I think I know who the piece of shit is. Sell it to someone who will appreciated it and buy something faster if speeding is all you want to do. Nobody has done a video like this because everyone else knows how stupid it looks. You can find plenty of 2.5 videos on the trails because that's where it belongs.

I've hit 95 mph in my 2000 TJ with the 4.0 running 31" tires. Those 2 extra cylinders do help a lot.
It doesn’t want to though.

Perfect that's my plan. 2" lift, 31s, 4.56. Is 85 max speed or max reasonable speed without having to floor it?

I have 488’s in mine 5 th is like 4 th gear
I have 33’s
Does all it needs too do
The 488’s sure gives the 4 cyl some more power

I cannot believe that you are revving it to 5, my 4pot is screaming at 3-3.5
I will just hang at 70 at 3k rpm. My jeep will last forever

Awesome I have the same Jeep 1997 with a 2.5 very slow
This is the MOST UNSAFE and INSANE video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. A top speed test in a TJ is basically a death ride.

Hahahaha
I almost got to 100 in an 02 TJ with bad wobble and messed up steering
Lol yes it is lol
Mine does 100 mph. 1995 yj 2.5/ax5 combo.@@matthewcohen9582

my race truck has this jeep motor in it. we push it to its limit regularly, that is to say were normally bottom 3 in lap times. it just got nothing

It did really well holy !!!
Dangerous territory in that rpm range with that engine!
Yo tengo un cheroke xj 2.5-4L y es igual … pero soy muy feliz con el
Pensé mi Dakota 1999 2.5 estaba rota no pasa de 75 y le cuesta llegar hay después de poner 4 velocidades
We dont need a video like this because we see it every day on the interstate... an old 4 banger jeep doing 65. 😂
It accelerates a little slower than my Ford Focus wagon, but not by much.

I’m surprised you got 87, mine did 81 on a good day.

How to make an engine explode and commit suicide , on video
🤣😅
I usually drive 65-75 on the highway for an hour every weekend with 35s and my 2.5.
u must live in the flat part of the county

how much torque and Hp for 2.5 amc engine ini this tj?
120 HP. Not sure on torque
@@TechnicianRed ok thx..
How is yours so fast I have the exact same model and can barely break 65
Oh wow and I thought mine was slow! You gotta go full send!
110 is my top speed 4.0 nv3550
I believe it. I did almost 100 in a 4.0 but it still had stock gearing on 31s with a small lift and some pretty heavy bumpers.
Mine would catch fire
My question is how are your gears so freaking long like seriously if I got to 15 I would be bouncing the gauge fully in the ketchup and you out here doing 30 at redline what is this
Stock 4.10 gears with an AX-5 and 30.5" tires. The math all adds up when you use a gearing calculator.
Is this a 4x4 or a 2wd
4x4
Poor Jeep. I never go above 3.5k rev rarely above 3k rev
why not
it has a redline for a reason
Engines are made to rev. If the engineers thought it was mad to shift above 3500 rpms they would put the redline there
Trust me these engines can take it
People who assume engines cannot withstand higher revs make no sense to me. These engines make their peak power at higher rpms. Their powerbands are meant to Rev higher. Stop treating cars like they're infant children lmao
I have the exact same Jeep with the same specs. No way I could ever reach the speeds that you indicated nor would I even try. That thing is a hog.
Why do you want to go that fast in a Jeep
Because I am a gearhead. I like cars so why not? I push everything to its limit because it is fun.
Why the fuck do you need to drive that fast in a Jeep for?
To merge with traffic Grandpa
My 2.5 YJ has 4:10s and 33s i can do 68 downhill
With my 33s i have difficulty to get 60 on high way normal?
@jonathanpoulin6150 I just send it. Open that 4 cylinder up
0:56

Glad I don't buy cars from you! More like ruin the engine than testing it !!
Imagine it flying into a death wobble rage right there lol....
My 98 wrangler Has never been over 65 miles an hour, that’s all it’s got. And for a jeep that’s fast enough.
