LOL my 02 TJ check engine light was permanently on too...spent $500 diagnosing it at 3 different repair shops, nothing could fix it, b/c nothing was wrong. Final solution - opened up the dash and put black electrical tape over the check engine light.
Dude, I can't stop laughing with the check engine light mechanics call. I am so used to seeing the check engine light on my 02 TJ for Evap issues. When it turns off, it concerns me very much. Lol
I've had 3 Tj's. Currently have an 04 Rubicon. The best way I've found to keep the death wobble gremlins away is to keep the tires rotated every 10 thousand miles.
Uh death wobble isn't caused by not rotaung tires. It is worn out traction bar bushings, tie rod, control arms and other suspension parts. #1 cause is the traction bar.
@@dylano7242Your 100% right my dude. Easy way to diagnose it is having someone turn the steering left and right. You’ll see the Separation at the mount bushing
Bought my TJ brand new in 1999. Still driving it to this day… Ironically, I’ve had every one of these issues except rust. Once they all got fixed, it ran like a top, and still does to this day. Turns 25 years old this month! 🤙
I bought the demo in mid 1996 after having been on display since late 1995. The dealership wanted to move the demo / concept to get in the new ones after the demo / concept had sat a year. The TJ has option that did not make it to production for a number of years. It is yellow, has 15x8 Canyon rims, cams with 30x10.5 R 15 All Terrain Tyres, Mopar stainless grill, Dana 44 rear axle, leather wrapped steering wheel, stalk mounted light switch (which was not very good), triple tone horn, Best Top upper door slider glass halves, and it is painted yellow! (may favourite aspect of the demo / concept.) On top of all this, I got the Jeep for very cheap, $11,500! The title says it is a 1996 Cherokee. It always causes issues. I have to explain why it says that. But, the door tag placard says it was built in 2/95. I love my dear RMS Stargazer! "RMS," does not mean, "Royal Mail Ship." It means, "Road, Mud, Snow." Today, she is very different from when I got her. She is my love, my life, my dream come true.
Great video, thanks man. Regarding death wobble, I have had it on two 4x4 vehicles that I own, a TJ and a Super Duty. I had to figure this out myself because dealerships could not. From what I understand, the most common culprit is the front track bar bushing. This was true for me in both cases. This is easily testable by having a friend turn the steering wheel back and forth (with the vehicle cranked and in park) while you look at the attachment point of the track bar to the frame. If there is a lot of motion, the bushing is bad. This bushing is an affordable (20-30 dollar) part, but you need a hydraulic press to remove it from the bar and put in the new one. Therefore, it's easier to just replace the entire track bar. Moog sells a good one for 80 bucks or so. If your Jeep is lifted, you need an adjustable track bar from a different manufacturer. There is a track bar in the rear as well, FYI, although when people talk death wobble, they talk about the front track bar bushing.
I just got a jeep TJ as a high schooler and you're one of my go to guys when it comes to figuring out what to do. Thanks a lot man and keep up the great work!
@@Montanaoffroad1 wranglers especially the TJ are so capable stock. Isn't that why the TJ Rubicon was named after the Rubicon trail because it was able to to the Rubicon trail in stock spec? The OEM wheel fitment of the Rubicon trim from a superficial perspective is the best looking.

Excellent video…right to the point! I am an original owner of a “special order” 1997 TJ Sport…now with 152K “on the clock”. I’m retired from two careers: Navy Officer and federal LEO. It’s predictable, the visibility is great, all my kids learned stick….frankly, I don’t have the heart to get rid of her. Of your issues noted, I’ve only experienced three: frame rust, the manifold, and some leaks. How many years I have left, obviously I haven’t a clue….but I’m getting ready to sink $20K into a complete restoration, including a new complete frame, update the interior, lighting and electronics, a repaint, etc. Again, as my name is on the Morrone Sticker, and it is practically a family member….goodbye Tacoma, goodbye Porsche….and I’ll drive the Jeep until I can’t, and leave it to my kids. I have a 2000 with a five speed and four banger I will never get rid of. The only gripe I have is the heater/ac control head. 128 thousand miles and I have went through 4 of them. It takes about ten minutes to replace but damn. The first three was from Jeep. This current one is after market. What goes out is the fan control not the temp or the blow position. Just the fan control. Even tested all the wiring from the fan coming into the control head and all is good. We will have to see about this one after market. Other than that no problems from a 2000 Wrangler.
@@Montanaoffroad1 My thoughts exactly but tested wire going into the fan selector. I mean it's a ten minute job or less to replace it but... I notice the one from Jeep aka Diamler Chrystler feel a little more spongy than the aftermarket that I just installed. I even broke it apart and the connection was burned up for that particular speed. But different fan speeds has went out and not the same one. The spongyness of a Jeep part compared to aftermarket with a descerndable click switching fan speeds??? I will have to see. The voltage in the wires is normal into the control head and nothing wrong with the blower motor because I checked that too. So... if you ever have a problem go to NAPA and get one. From the Stock Jeep ones the click to stop just feels weaker. Then again it maybe because my wife drives it when I'm on the road and stopping the weaker click in between two speeds. That is all I can come up with for the reason why. Higher voltage feeding back and burning the connection of a lower fan speed. The aftermarket actually stops at the speed you select. I admit that everyone that I replaced with a Jeep part the click felt weak. Almost like the selector for floor, vent or defrost. I really wanted mine to stay original Jeep from bumpers to top and half soft doors. Even my bikini top has a Jeep tag on it. But a ten minute job every five years gets old doing. But it is identical to the stock part though. Oh yeah and radio is not stock but I still have the original with a cassette player.
You used the three C's when making this video. Clear, Concise, Correct. I live in the mid atlantic, so my 2000 tj has a rusty frame. Most of it is repaired, properly, and when i go to take the skid plate off this winter we'll see what i find there. I anticipate the need to repair/replace the nutserts at a minimum. And of course, the only reason i am doing that is to access the leaking main seal and transfer case. All easily doable and i love having a project. The one thing i would sa about rust on the frame, is, if you are looking at a jeep, don't just tap on the side of the frame. The rust comes from the inside and is typically starting on the bottom of the frame, particularly at the low points in the curves of the frame where the control arm brackets are. Poke around in there and underneath the bracket cuz that can be paper thin and you don't even know it.
04 TJ RHD here, check engine light has been on for most of its life. 219,000 miles and second automatic trans, i need a couple more TJ's to balance out my driveway.
Another problem is thrust bearing wear on 6 cylinders. Have someone push the clutching and watch the harmonic balancer, it shouldn’t move forward. A worn bearing can cause significant movement. Avoid clutches with heavy pressure plate spring pressure as it will wear it much faster.
Have a Jeep Wrangler 2004 Sport with 95,000 miles. From Michigan. But I stored it in the winter. Had to replace the rear main seal, valve cover gasket, fuel pump, fuel cap, fuel pump, heater vent, plugs, rotors, Drums, high flow stainless exhaust, brake master cylinder and brake power booster. It’s an automatic. So I just ordered a new higher capacity transmission pan and filter kit. Going to replace the pion seals as well.
Nice video! Gonna save this for the future. Found someone selling a Beautiful 98 TJ. Was really tempted to buy but it was a 4 banger … and he was selling for 14k. What you think ? Bad deal?
I have a 98’ 2.5L and the rear main seal leaks even after I had it replaced. The leak stops and starts whenever it feels like it wants to leak. Also my manifold just started leaking, I can hear it when the engine is under strain. I was hoping it wasn’t going to be expensive.
I’m sorry to hear that! They might be able to spot treat the manifold for a temporary fix if you don’t have the funds at the moment. I hope you get that rear main seal figured out as well. Thanks for watching!

My 92 YJ had that issue for the entire 8 years that I owned it. And it was my daily driver. I have a 99 TJ now that's been my daily driver for 9 1/2 years the check engine light works fine.
I have an 04 TJ and a small problem I’ve came up to is that sometimes, usually when it’s very dewey out, the oil life gauge will be all the way down, usually if you turn the Jeep off and wait a minute or two it will go away
My 03 sport has started shaking really bad lately, whenever I start driving at around 60mph. Though, when I slow down or even go faster, the shaking stops. I’ve only heard that you need to stop for the death wobble to stop. Is this the death wobble or an alignment issue?
Any recommendations on buy a YJ should I go for a 2.5L or a 4.2L? Not going to be doing any hardcore wheeling with it or should I try to find a decent 4.0 tj? Any suggestions?
Personally I like the coil suspension that the TJ offers over the YJ. The TJ’s 4.0L engine is certainly the longest lasting engine Jeep ever made as well and has about 80 more hp then the 4.2 in the YJ. I personally also like the interior revamp of the TJ model as well. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@Montanaoffroad1 yeah I think I’m set on the tj I want to go with the coils instead of leafs and for what I’ve seen it makes more sense to spend a little extra cash to get the 4.0

p.s. I don't know it for a fact, but I would suspect that lateral front sway bar motion could be due to a severely bad track bar. The track bar keeps the axle from moving side to side. If the track bar is bad and the axle is moving side the side, that could potentially pull the sway bar along with it if your sway bar bushings are also bad. I would replace the sway bar bushings as well as the track bar if you haven't already. You may be able to remove the hose clamps from the sway bar at that point.
Like your Jeep, I have an 06 Rubicon the same color. I Used to have an 04 and I ordered a chrome grille like yours and cannot for the life of me remember where I got it. box frame tend to rust inside out i used a bug sprayer to coat the inside with paint thinner linseed oil also make sure u drill holes in the frame low spots and plug factory frame holes.
What was the noise like caused by the leaking exhaust manifold? Was it by chance a loud whistling noise? I hear that every time I take my foot off the accelerator. I see a lot of others have had this same sound issue, it havent dug up the cause yet. Maybe exhaust manifold, throttle bottle, or other leak ?
Hi Aaron, that doesn’t sound like the exhaust manifold to me. I’m not sure what that would be but I wish you luck on figuring it out! Thanks for watching!
A loud whistling noise could be an exhaust manifold, throttle body, or a vacuum leak. Vacuum leak will usually make noise when you are on the throttle. Inspect your vacuum lines and if they are good I’d try torquing down the manifold and inspecting your intake

One issue with the TJ, is not truly an issue, but be aware of it. The TJ will get the infamous AMC, imitation diesel, rattle. Around 160,000 miles, the AMC rattle became more pronounced when the engine is cold. It does not really effect performance in any measurable way. Once the engine is warm, it hums so very smooth.

I have an 04 TJ and a small problem I’ve came up to is that sometimes, usually when it’s very dewey out, the oil life gauge will be all the way down, usually if you turn the Jeep off and wait a minute or two it will go away
Good vid. I’m building my 5th TJR. Solid content.
Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words!
My 03 sport has started shaking really bad lately, whenever I start driving at around 60mph. Though, when I slow down or even go faster, the shaking stops. I’ve only heard that you need to stop for the death wobble to stop. Is this the death wobble or an alignment issue?
Doesn’t sound like death wobble to me. I would definitely get an alignment and see if that solves your issue! Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a out of balance tyre or busted tyre radial belt . If it only happens at certain speeds
Great video
You forgot about the fuel pump check valve that causes hard start.
had the same issue but behold it fixed itself some how lol i used to have put the ign in run to get the gas to the rail before cranking.
My 01 tj check engine light has been on for a year..🤣 i would miss it now 😎
😂😂
Any recommendations on buy a YJ should I go for a 2.5L or a 4.2L? Not going to be doing any hardcore wheeling with it or should I try to find a decent 4.0 tj? Any suggestions?
Personally I like the coil suspension that the TJ offers over the YJ. The TJ’s 4.0L engine is certainly the longest lasting engine Jeep ever made as well and has about 80 more hp then the 4.2 in the YJ. I personally also like the interior revamp of the TJ model as well. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@Montanaoffroad1 yeah I think I’m set on the tj I want to go with the coils instead of leafs and for what I’ve seen it makes more sense to spend a little extra cash to get the 4.0
I completely agree 👍
get the 4.0l 5sp . the 4.2l was dogish. but 4.2l is good if want stay away from electronics and go old school.
1992 got 4.0l fuel injection
1993 got anti lock brakes added
1996 got the most reliable engine 4.0l i6, 2.5 i4 and coil over springs and stiff frame which made far superior on and off road driving.
any one you buy make sure get a manual transmission not an automatic.
1987 -1990 4.2l was carburetor 112hp, 210 tq
2.5l was carburetor 121hp,135tq
1991-1995 4.0l fuel injection 190hp, 220 tq
2.5l fuel injection 130hp , 139 tq
1996-2006 4.0l I6 190 hp, 235 tq
2.5l ( 1996-02) i4 124 hp167 tq
2.4l (2003 up) 147 hp, 165 tq
The Tj was the best one imo
Jeep for all..From France
thx! i never heard about the swaybar issue, but i'll check. btw: the piece you mentioned is currently unavailabe.
You bet! I just checked the link that I left in the comments and it’s showing in stock for me. Do your live in the US?
Sway bar clamp ⬇️⬇️
www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2AFW9Q/?tag=montanaoffr0c-20
@@Montanaoffroad1 no, I reside in Germany, perhaps that's the reason; I will check other online shops
Yeah that may be where the problem lies! Sorry about that! Thanks again for watching!
What is the name of the color of your TJ? It’s so beautiful. Thank you, great video! 🙏🏻💜
Emerald Pearl Green! Thank you and thanks for watching!
The modifications of the jeep you purchased ruined the jeep? Please give us a detailed video of that one.
Like your Jeep, I have an 06 Rubicon the same color. I Used to have an 04 and I ordered a chrome grille like yours and cannot for the life of me remember where I got it. I have searched the net to no avail, could you tell me where you got yours? Like watching your vids and am subscribed. Thanks, Gary
Hey Gary! Unfortunately as far as I know the Chrome grills have been discontinued because I have tried to find them for other subscribers who asked and I have had no luck. I did see a used on on eBay once but that’s about it! Sorry about that and I appreciate your kind words! Thanks for watching!
Great video as always
Thank you Bruce! Really appreciate that!
my 02 tj whas a p1282 code engine to cold I just replaced the thermostat and reset the ecu an👌
Remember. Even if your steering wheel isn’t shaking but your car is, that can still be an early sign of death wobble. At that point you should take it in or fix it.
What do you think about undercoating?
I think undercoatings can be great preventative options for rust, especially if you love somewhere where rust is a big problem! Thanks for watching!
@@Montanaoffroad1 anytime. My 06 Rusted out and I couldn't get the steel during the Resource shortages to fix it. Just bought and 04 with barely any surface rust. Going to grind that out and am trying to decide if I should coat her undercarriage because a TJ in this condition that is over 10 years old with all maintenance done is a gem
@@Montanaoffroad1 I should add I am in New England so to find one in such excellent condition is like pulling teeth. Want to keep her that way
In New England I would definitely use an undercoating and avoid use in the winter as much as I could lol
box frame tend to rust inside out i used a bug sprayer to coat the inside with paint thinner linseed oil also make sure u drill holes in the frame low spots and plug factory frame holes.
Where did you get that grill Bro....????
I can't find a chrome grill anywhere
Hey Brandon, I think they have been discontinued! Iv looked around and I can’t find them anymore! Sorry about that, thanks for watching!
Right on. I guess I will try and find a chrome shop to dip my original. Ugh....
I'm afraid of that cost. Lol
Lol, hey I found one on eBay you can check out. Just got an 05 20k LJ one owner with a one inch thick book of all the work done and where. I still went through and found plenty of sins all be it minor for a jeep. If you didn't do it make sure you check it out well, professionals are still people and everyone has a first day.
Good Job Georgia Peach!
Lololololol 🍑
One issue with the TJ, is not truly an issue, but be aware of it. The TJ will get the infamous AMC, imitation diesel, rattle. Around 160,000 miles, the AMC rattle became more pronounced when the engine is cold. It does not really effect performance in any measurable way. Once the engine is warm, it hums so very smooth.
My TJ is the same color as the one on the front of this video.
Death wobbles SUCKS! I experienced my very first on on my motorcycle last year when I was surrounded by fast moving traffic. If I had fell that would be one thing, but for multiple vehicles to run you over, YIKES!
Great job! New sub 👍
Fresh TJ content coming soon!
@Montanaoffroad1
Nice!
Mine is a '97 2.5L, 3-speed auto, with quite a few mods (original owner)
Looking forward to new content!
You might also comment on the average miles on your jeep and how it might pertain to these problems that come up.
A big source of death wobble is poorly balanced wide mud tires.
So basically a money pit but a wonderful money pit
Owned majority of al 4x4 made. Whatever issues, 2003 Jeep Rubicon was the pinnacle of them all
Thanks for this video. I no longer desire purchasing a Jeep.
They aren’t for everyone 😂
The top mistake is the lift for a TJ your part will come in metrics but the bolt holes are standard. Things will egg out😢
I like what you have to say
Thanks John, I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!

Please call me Scott
You got it Scott!
I took the check engine light out of the cluster lol
No Major leaks here🤪, but that freakin engine light is on with the code 305😱 what about if the Jeep doesn’t like to start 🧐how do I find a good -nah - an Honest mechanic that can help me repair my Jeep… cause the owner I bought my Jeep from shoNuf lied🤦🏾♀️
Lol restocking fee!? I have never heard of that. What dealership? All you had to do was call the lean holder or DMV and tell them you're not buying the vehicle. If the dealership is talking crazy
🔥🔥🔥
In 97 i bought a TJ had 18 miles on it. The first year it spent over 100 days in the dealership. Biggest POS i ever owned. Could pay me to own another one. Bad computer bad fuel rail bad windshield frame faulty thermostat to name a few rite of the lot. Took another 18 months to give the POS back to the dealership.
Hey Keith, sorry to hear you had such a poor experience, those don’t sound like typical issues and it appears you got a lemon! Thanks for watching!
Big John is kinda cute… 👀
😂 I’ll let him know you think so 😉
It's a Jeep thing😊

Give the jeep back to the dealership! LOL some people don't know anything about the jeep world.
I’m not following but thanks for watching!
It's because all the other judgments hookups that never hook up like the boat trailer or another gadget that has a plug to it you see empty fill it with gel so when you bog it don't f****** your computer wheels kid you know what I'm saying
Seems sooo many YT contributors aspire to fame. Ah, my friends. YOU DON'T HAVE THE TALENT !!
Like all jeep models this guy's was junk when it rolled out of the factory.
I wouldn’t say that lol. Thanks for watching!
Jeeps are junk when they roll out of the factory.
