This is just a short list of things to check out when purchasing a Jeep TJ or older, these are some of the most serious issues, and if in doubt, take it to a trusted mechanic to get it checked out, remember, it's buyer beware anytime you purchase a used vehicle. Thanks for sharing your thoughts you earned a new subscriber.. Ive found a jeep looks to be in great condition everything checks out but whats killing me is that it has a 320K miles. 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.0L Manual $5,500
@@ARS850H Don't be too worried about the mileage, one of my childhood friends has a mid eighties Cherokee pickup that he bought new, he finally parked it with nearly 600k miles. It still runs. Parked it because the frame and body are unsafe...rust got in the frame and the A pillars. Those inline six engines will run forever with proper maintenance. Sounds to me like you scored a deal! Welcome to the channel and we hope to see you out on the trail 😎👍🏻!
Hey! Not a problem! Glad to bring some of these things to look for into the light. If it saves someone from purchasing a POS, it was worthwhile to make the video!
I purchased my 97 Sahara in 98 with 8k miles. Only changes I made were 33" tires, (no lift) 4:10 gears, Ox locker frt, limited slip rear and Borla stainless steel header. Only off road for work on water pipeline here in SoCal so no rust. They may have to bury me in this lil goat. 😅
It is easy to get attached to a Jeep, wife and I have an absolutely bad ass Ram express edition, short bed, single cab, runs like a scalded dog... but we still prefer taking the Jeep anytime we go out 😎👍🏻 Thank you for watching!
Bought an 02 couple years ago and knew going in I would have to do some work on it. First issue for the 4.0 was fuel heat soak. I installed the heat shields then discovered the injectors were cracked so replaced those. That fixed that issue then it was the 02 sensors, cam senor and overall tune up. This jeep had 141000 miles on it at the time currently is over 150000 and I have driven this thing on long trips (12 MPG) and have enjoyed the heck out of it. If you are willing to put in some maintenance these things will just keep going and going.
Hello @randallmcdaniel1189, driving a Jeep really can put a smile on your face! When the rod broke on the Mistress, there was no mountain I wouldn't move to bring her back from the dead...$10 k and a lot of blood sweat and tears later, she's bigger and badder than ever... and I regret none of it. Thank you for watching and if you're not already, please subscribe! Hope to see you out on the trail!
Let's not forget the head issue that alot of these TJ's suffered from. Bought mine last year but before I did I popped the oil cap loose and took a peak inside. I'd recommend only buying one that has a Tupy head. Great video
Thank you! I'm not sure exactly how many heads failed, I have never actually met anyone who had that happen. Would be curious to know if the head failure happened after overheating the engine. There was also a problem with the oil pump drive assembly, however that was addressed with a recall. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
@gorillahd9247 We have a lot of great footage recorded, we recently went to Kerwin Wyoming with Wyoming Jeepers, that video is still in the making and this last weekend we went on the Black Hills trail takeover with Gen right offroad, I'll be working on those videos this week. Thanks again for watching and we'll keep the videos coming 😎👍🏻
I just got a '92 YJ. My aunt bought it new, moved to Phoenix and stopped driving it cause Phoenix is a living Hell. It had been sitting, unused, in her garage since 2005. Absolute time capsule. There's no rust anywhere. 147,000 miles, 4.0, 5 speed 4x4. I put a fuel pump in it, changed some fluids, it's back in action.
Warms my heart to hear stories like that... every Jeep deserves to get out and have some fun 😁... thank you for liberating the little YJ from dead storage hell !!! Thanks for watching and thanks for the great story 😎👍🏻
I have a 99 and I'm in the process of a complete rebuild. Almost 300k miles and it runs absolutely great. I had to weld new pieces on the frame, right where he said was a deal breaker but that was easy enough to fix, they sell pieces that slip over the frame and weld in place. I love that I never have to pay a mechanic to do anything but mount tires.
Thanks for the comment, but be aware that in many states, you can't sell a vehicle with a frame cap repair. I'm well aware of the frame cap kits, and I have done one for a friend on a Toyota Tacoma... but about three years later the truck folded in half about 18" behind the frame cap, despite all the efforts to remove all rust from inside the remaining"good " part of the frame. Only prolonged the inevitable. Thanks for watching and good luck with your build
When I bought my first TJ, I knew absolutely nothing about the problems they are known for. Any smart person would have run away but I'm not that smart. I ended up stripping the vehicle right down to the frame and rebuilt it from the ground up. New frame rail caps, rear control arm mounts, rear coil springs and a tub that needed three new body mounts. That vehicle gave me skills I'd never thought I'd learn and there probably isn't too much I don't know about them now lol.
@gp500fan, I wish I could have produced this video before you purchased, but it sounds like you've got an awesome Jeep now, plus you know exactly what's in it! Thanks for watching!
some people look for TJ's so they can convert them to a LJ for longer wheel base. they'll be hacking up parts of the frame for length and to place better suspension.
Hey there Two Feather Channel! How have you been? And those people stretching a TJ into an LJ have a lot of body tub welding in their future. I've honestly kicked around the idea of shrinking the tub and adding a pickup bed, kinda like a CJ scrambler. Good to hear from you again!
All vehicles have their ups and downs but I'll still take my 20+ yr old jeep over the junk they call vehicles today! Sometimes it's a scavenger hunt for parts but that's JeepLife for you!
The TJ, as far as I'm concerned is the best Jeep out there... but I have looked at some that were not as well cared for. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting 😎👍🏻
im in the mid atlantic. Rust is inevitable. i have installed a frame repair kit on driver side rear control arm and passenger side front. getting ready to install repair kit on driver side center. Fortunately, the rust hasn't crept up and these repairs can keep it going for a while. Another way to look for rust inside the frame is to stick your finger in the inspection holes on the side of the frame and feel around. you'll definitely encounter dirt and sand within the frame, but will also feel the rust flakes within.
True. Even a frame that's still in what's considered "good" condition will have some rust flakes in it, after all, these jeeps are 20+ years old. All the more reason to not neglect the frame. Keep them clean, especially on the inside, and treat them with rust converter and then use a good old fashioned frame wax ( applied inside the frame) to stop all moisture and oxygen from feeding the rust. Thanks for watching and hope to see you out on the trail 😎👍🏻
While I really love the TJ's, the video footage I'm editing right now I really could have used the extra wheelbase, was wheeling with GenRight, but was waved off the second obstacle because I kept wheel standing. You'll be able to check that out in the next upcoming video! Thanks for watching and hope to see you out on the trail!
Jason Thompson, thank you for that! We have tons of people who watch, but don't subscribe... since we were throwing rocks at the moment, it seemed appropriate! Man I hope you enjoy the channel and we hope to see you out on the trail! Thanks again 😎👍🏻
How's it going @nelsongonzalez??? Love it that you also wheel your 2000 daily driver, our Mistress is also my Wife's daily and we wheel her every chance we get! Hope to see you out on the trail! And thanks for watching!
Hello @jeepinwithjulia ! Seems like you're one of those people with Jeep in their blood! I can tell you that when you find the right TJ , you absolutely won't regret it... closer to the size of your CJ and the modern suspension of your JK... you'll wonder what took you so long to get one! Thanks for watching and hope to see you out on the trail!
Honestly, if you read every word that was posted on the TJ forums, anyone would get the idea that every TJ out there is a total POS... The truth is far from that. My experience with them is that they are very dependable and solid built. Yes, there were some issues, like with the oil pump drive, and yes, I'd be wary of one that came from the rust belt... but the smiles that a TJ brings are priceless! Thank you for watching and I hope to see you out on the trail!
Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply, somehow this one slipped through the cracks. Glad you found our video useful, and hope to see you out on the trail !
If you have any questions about your TJ , don't be afraid to ask...if we have an answer, we'll try to help you out! And thank you for watching our channel! Enjoy the Jeep life 😁
@@Jeep_psychology_101 Should be getting it back soon, had work done. New tub, fenders, windshield frame and tailgate. New carpet and wheels. Painted in raptor liner very close to original color.
Agree...in my opinion, the TJ is the easiest to modify, simple enough for the average enthusiast to work on themselves and has the best trail performance in the most situations. Thanks for watching and if you're not already subscribed please join us!
