When Paul Simon heard this version with Disturbed, he emailed David and said it was the best he had ever heard, and now the song belongs to Disturbed. What an honor coming from the original artist.

I was so glad that Paul Simon let David know that it was the best he'd heard - Disturbed made this song so much more meaningful to everyone, especially those of us who were pre-teens and older when Simon and Garfunkel first released the song. In a few days my son turns 37 and the day after his birthday I turn 70. My son introduced me to this version by Disturbed in like 2018 (I believe it was) and it brings so much more meaning to the song than the original. My late husband who was 7 years older than me did not like the Disturbed version; however, I attribute that to my husband's declining health in 2018 (he passed in 2021 from a rare and aggressive sinus cancer that was first diagnosed in early 2020). I honestly believe that if my husband would have heard this version when it first came out that he might have enjoyed it and been able to see the deeper meaning in the way David sang this song.

@HotPeridot2 What a beautiful moment. I'm so sorry about your husband. Unfortunately, I was never aware of the Simon and Garfunkel version. But my mom was, when I showed her this version, she was amazed. She thought this was better than the original. BUT, she loved Simon and Garfunkel and said because the words that Paul wrote were so profound back then and still to this day, she loved both, but Disturbed made it hit the soul.

@@amydavies2529 Thank you. I always thought that the lyrics had a deeper meaning; however, Simon and Garfunkel's version was just so laid back and even with no grit in it. And, yes, the Disturbed version hits the soul - to the deepest depths of the soul.

I always took this song as a lack of communication between people. People hearing but not comprehending what's being said. People so eager to put a opinion, but never open to understand one.

Back in the 1960s, I purchased the album, "Wednesday Morning, 3 a.m.," and instantlly became a Simon and Garfunkel fan. Then I went away to college and discovered that people considered the lyrics to "The Sound of Silence" to be so profound they included them in American Literature textbooks. Then, a couple of years ago, I discovered Disturbed's version. Simon and Garfunkel's version is a warning of what the future might be like. Disturbed's version is a primal scream, recognizing that the song's prophecy has come true.

  • @truckinleprechaunscottcask9747

The meaning of this song to me: Simon and Garfunkel gave us a warning of what was to come. If we continued to push religion out of our lives. Disturbed's version to me is an I told you so. The vast emptiness, dead trees, no animals around. Instruments buried under the rubble due to an "apocalyptic" type event because we ignored the teachings of our religions.
David Draimen is a trained Cantor and as you heard is amazing. Most people will tell you to do Down with the Sickness next. Which is a great song to hear his ability and to welcome you to the phase oh wahaaahahh.
I'll suggest his Phil Collins remake of Land of Confusion or 10,000 Fists. Disturbed is an amazing band and their concerts are pure energy. Great reaction.

How fitting is it that David's incredible performance makes you want to go back to read the lyrics. We discover Paul Simon wrote a prophecy hidden in a happy little song by he and Art. David is screaming "wake the f up and see what's happening!" I am saddened that the neon sign is a capital letter "S" with two vertical lines severing it. This performance is amazing, but also watch (whether you review it or not) the live Conan O'Brien show performance, where David was sick as a dog, and hear one of the greatest recorded performances ever shown on television. You might want to record it, just in case you wish to release it.

For her Tea Time Interview w/ David Draiman, @The Charismatic Voice, as typical used several questions from her viewers. Mine was the 1st and I asked, "Why this song?" He replied that the drummer is a big S&G fan and kept suggesting doing a cover of a song. Draiman was not interested, but was out voted. Seems he came around to it. Glad he did- it's a masterpiece! Cheers, Rosalie!

Paul Simon has heard Disturbed’s cover of his Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound of Silence” - and he enjoyed it enough to reach out to singer David Draiman and tell him so. Draiman shared word of his interaction with Simon after the band delivered a performance of “The Sound of Silence” during its March 28 appearance on Conan. Simon saw the show and sent Draiman an email shortly after, saying, "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks."

I'm 65 and grew up with the original version by Simond and Garfunkel. It was good then. This version for me, talks to my higher self. Telling me to never stay forever in the minds silence lest I miss the connection, and the opportunities that will become buried like the instruments. Back then I was a musician and a hippie type, and I thought I knew what the song was about, but hearing and seeing it performed by this band really brings the full meaning and significance of this song together. I became a Christian at 29 and stopped listening to secular music for decades. I became a worship leader 35 years ago and just started to listen to other music in the last few years, more from nostalgia than anything. I love this version because it is encapsulates the present world we find ourselves in. I guess S & G we’re real prophets and didn’t even know it. 🙏😎

I heard this soon after it came out and, to this day, I'm still drawn to it. It continues to touch the center of the heart of my spirit. There has always been much to glean within the lyrics, but what Draiman has done is put every line, of every verse, into an audible bold print and underlined from beginning to end. The original video version also adds another level of understanding and depth. I have yet to hear anyone mention that he sang it in four distinct styles. He starts in casual style, like when we sing to ourselves. Then he goes to a Pop style. Then to a Rock style. Lastly, to a Metal style he's more known for. A very rare song. A very rare rendition. A very rare treasure.

I love the scene when the guy reaches up to get the timpani from the tree. Did anyone notice that the bare tree looks a lot like a basic view of the blood vessels in the head-brain and it comes just after he sings it was planted in his brain. So many tiny little scenes within the video seem to fit what was sung, like when the girl is writing the music notes and is on the upstroke as David's voice goes up and the drops down as she draws from top to bottom of the next note. All perfectly timed as if the image is a visual representation of his voice going up then down.

Simon & Garfunkel's is melancholy and saddened by our inability to communicate.
Disturbed's version is like taking you by the shoulders and trying to break through to you. (The video adds a more optimistic note at the end)
Henk's version is a bit in between but adds the gravitas of age to his performance, a "Please don't repeat our failures" to the kids.

Although the meaning was something different as told by S&G.
Back in the late 60's and early 70's, due to "Budget" crunches, lots of school were talking about getting rid of school music programs. I always thought this song was prophetic telling of those times. And what could happen to our society if the arts were dropped from the curriculum.

Hi Rosalie, When I listened to Simon and Garfunkle back when I was younger, I only thought of it as a cool relaxing song.
Disturbs version, I listened to the lyrics while it played and was astonished I never heard them before. S+G version I went with the song flow never thinking or hearing the lyrics.
Man, the darkness planted a seed and the planted seed gave a vision to come. I relate the rest to back in the 60"s Neon signs were used a lot. Signs directing you talking to you without speaking, we see them like listening without hearing. But also not just that, as mankind made these inventions like gods to worship they fell from the truth, the true God. Music will be silenced because of the Prophets, lots of prophetic songs come from Psalms. So instead of isolating or discriminating one type, because the truth can bleed into other types of music they silence them all. So the truth does not spread. So they were written on subway walls and tenement halls, all within the sound of silence. Like Do Not Let Anyone Know. Like graffiti.
That's my take on it. Bye thank you for the reaction.

A common consensus is that the original version was a warning. This version is an accusation because the warning went unheeded.
