+David Simms spot on David . I just found my only album from them : " Steeltown " from 1994 . What a powerful masterpiece that one is . I found back also the maxi vinyl of " The teacher " - all in vinyl makes it all the more worth to listen to .
love this band.. had so many plans...then my brother didnt take me to gig in swansea.. and same week sold his gibson & amp..... now im just a poor chippie... may god forgive him. love you all the same x
Living in upper Minnesota the only BC exposure was almost non existent. for my fifteenth Birthday my mother (originally from Bristol) bought me The Crossing on cassette. She had no idea of the band, just knew it was modern (at the time). Ever since Big Country has been one of my favorite groups. Every song is worth listening to on all the albums. Cant say that for any of the artists today.
Stuart Adamson is the best singer, writer, guitarist and the sexiest man I've ever laid eyes on. I could listen to Big Country and nothing else, as a matter of fact, their music is all I keep in my car. Love Skids too! Damn how he is missed. And he only got better and better.
I absolutely adore this video. Even though they fuck up countless times, it still sounds kick ass. What makes the video for me is the guys in the middle of the crowd who are proper loving it.
I saw Big Country Live in Ipswich (The Seer) concert and they started off fields of fire with a sort of scratch music played on the guitar, then burst into fields of fire. It blew me away. TOP BAND
It makes me seriously sad this talented person died. I saw Big Country so many times in Europe when I was stationed in Germany in the RAF. He was a fantastic talent. The amount of times as young men out for a good time we'd scream at the top of our lungs "Stay Alive!!!" like Stuart did. This song brings back so many happy memories -- thanks Stuart. Love you mate.
seen them twice at newcastle in the 80's within the space of a few weeks. played 2nd gig coz of tech failure on 1st song so 2nd gig free. they were f..king amazing, my m8 shouted " oh jock ya c..t" after sound chck & SA just laffed at him.....lol
Influential in better ways than U2. More actual joy! Tony Butler was the bassist Big Country, damn right he made it even more interesting. He played vivid bass on the Pretenders "Back on the Chain Gang" (How cool is that?) and some/most? of the songs on "Learning to Crawl." Again, how cool is that? Anyone know where he went from there? I remember seeing them do this song on SNL in the '80s & thinking "these guys really love what they're playing." Important to me even now.
26 years on I still remember the impact Big Country had on the UK music scene. Great musicians, great songs but most of all an unforgettable passion and energy. Even love the bum notes on this performance are delivered with 100% conviction! Big Country were at least as good as any rock band that preceded or followed them.
always been a heavy rock/metal fan,saw Big Country wipe the floor with nearly all the metal bands at the Reading Festival in 83.imagine what the so called "guitar" bands in the charts would make of Stuart and the boys...R.I.P Stuart.
Brings back so many memories seeing this video. Saw the live quite a few times in the 80's and 90's They were awesome live. So sad Stuart Adamson is no longer with us, I am sure they would have reformed and gone out on tour again if he was still alive.
Been a fan for 20 plus years, seen the band numerous times, just seen the BG version with Mike Peters. Now I liked The Alarm, but REALLY, could the band not do better. RIP Stuart.
Man, I remember the Mayfair too! I moved to Toon Town in 98 and spent many nights at that club, and then it closed suddenly and was pencilled for redevelopment. Really sad. Probably one of the last true great old guard rock clubs and live venues left at the time. Great memories.
The video to this is one of the best they did, they are sitting on a train playing, then get off and see themsevles fighting in a war! There is a boy in there too playing with his train set!
This was such a fantastic band, USA doesn't know a good sound when they hear it...and I'm American! There is no doubt in my mind this band should have succeeded here...
watched that crap on tv last night about scottish bands. not one mention about these boys, who are the best band to come out of scotland. saw them live in the 80's. best band ive ever seen live, and ive seen 100's. they really got the crowd going r.i.p stuart
hey! jus discovered this band, and most americans never heard of Big Country. were they as big as the smiths in Britain? as for ww2 french fought for honor, british for glory, and americans for souveniers.
@ajittffcure toyally agree with that mate, they managed to create a very distinctive sound indeed wonderful memories of a very influential and enjoyable band
Hiya Love the band R.I.P. Stuart. Met them in 83 i think in Fleetwood uk, "Chance" had just come out as a single and they were on "The Crossing" tour. Just wanted to let you know(not that it is important) that the tv show was called "The Tube." I saw them again two years ago when Mike Peters was doing vocals. Great show but there was some NRG missing and that isnt because the band are 30+ years older.....Peace and Love xxx
My Top 10 U.S. singles list from January 1984: 1) Big Country - Fields Of Fire RIP 2) The Alarm - The Stand 3) Lyres - I Want To Help You Ann 4) Divinyls - Only Lonely RIP 5) David Bowie - Modern Love RIP 6) Stray Cats - (She's) Sexy + 17 7) Slade - Cum On Feel The Noize 8) The Police - King Of Pain 9) Tears For Fears - Change 10) The Police - Synchronicity II
the show was called 'the tube' so perhaps the title should be changed. this first album is my favourite secular album of all time! such energy, he took the guitar sound from 'the skids' and added that scottish twist!
@kundaflower One of my favourite bands..saw them in Aberdeen for the Millennium Celebrations..great live, and i'm a U2 Fan as well..not about one v the Other, as we all know we all like different things..me, i like bands who can sing and play guitars, I liked the Skids before bc, and then onto BC...ps 1min12 in as Stu sings 400 miles..like the Boy album cover in the shot:-)
Remember watching this at the time, completely blew me away! The slightly out of kilter guitars only make it better. Never seen a better band live.
Rip Stuart adamson the worlds a worse place without you
RIP Stuart Adamson, a very underrated and unique sounding Guitarist.
What makes you believe he's underrated? Please explain.
THE BEST THING TO COME OUT OF SCOTLAND, STUART ADAMSON SADLY UNDERRATED , EVEN MORE MISSED A TRUE LEGEND

I absolutely adore this video. Even though they fuck up countless times, it still sounds kick ass. What makes the video for me is the guys in the middle of the crowd who are proper loving it.
I am mesmerized by the double "tom-tom" beats Mark is knocking out in this version! Much respect!
He's fucken amazing no? One of the most underrated drummers ever.
Absolutely loved them. Grew up with U2 but they were just as good. So sad about Stuart.
Such an amazing band. My dad introduced me to this Big Country when i was 11. I am 18 now and i still looooooooooooooooooooove it.
I saw Big Country Live in Ipswich (The Seer) concert and they started off fields of fire with a sort of scratch music played on the guitar, then burst into fields of fire. It blew me away. TOP BAND

I'm 18 as well, "In a Big Country" was one of my favorite songs when I was little. XD
Influential in better ways than U2. More actual joy! Tony Butler was the bassist Big Country, damn right he made it even more interesting. I was moved to despair to learn of Adamson's suicide. His music was so optimistic, so bold. It cut to my heart.

My last comment was in response to Graham3840's comment below - haven't got the hang of this yet - born in the '60s! (late '60s....)
