I’ve met a number of my heroes and it’s the perfect example of social media right now - the things you revere are a snapshot of that person. Don’t hold others in high regard unless they deserve it from how they treat you and others. You deserve as much respect as the hero who commands it
The funny thing is that social media actually makes a lot of these people look bad. Countless podcasts have made me realise my heroes are villains, Interviews around the Chris Benoit situation are nuts.
It wasn’t the same situation but I met Scott Hall for the first time after him being my favorite for 30 years and fortunately, he was great. Kevin Nash couldn’t be any lamer though.
This is crazy because hearing this from him really brings things full circle. I use to like Stevie Richards back in the day because he was like a makeshift Shawn Michaels to me with the Steven Kick and the looks; he even resembles him slightly to me. I feel horrible knowing how that was just thrown back in his face like that because he didn't deserve that. I'm glad he took that and doesn't plan to replicate it. We need more people like him that are just open and receptive to helping. Younger talent will be good under his tutelage.
Man, i know this exact feeling. I met Bruce Dickinson once when I was around 19 years old. I was a massive Iron Maiden fan and I was the lead singer in a band at the time too. He could not have been more dismissive if he tried. I was polite, courteous, and respectful of his space and time, but he seemed to hate my existence, and treated me like something under his shoe. It broke me, cause he was such a big hero of mine. I cant listen to maiden anymore cause i just think of that bad interaction. I really feel for you Stevie, it sucks. We all love you! ❤
That makes total sense... Even though I obviously never had any personal experience w/ HBK, just seeing and hearing stories and rumors of how much of an asshole he was in the locker room/behind the scenes made me unable to watch him wrestle!
@@johncook9392 I just Shawn as this kid running around without any sense of self-awareness outside of what someone could give to him in a wrestling match or promo for said match. He was always about the entertainment and if you got in his way, he saw you as a stepping stool.
The only part I disagree with about Shawn is the Tommy Dreamer story. I don't quite see how Shawn understanding what you have to do as a performer is adjacent to him not being a Christian. As a performer playing a character, you do have to 'get your stuff in'. Tommy Dreamer is finna have to be more specific about what Shawn was telling him
"Do you think this makes you a good Christian?" As a Christian, this is truly a sad statement. When you judge someone for giving you a Christian CD you have fallen in your fath. May God bless him and get him back on the right track. Maybe he has just lost his smile again 😉
Stevie, so sorry that was your experience. Your emotional response to your recall really got to me, especially since you've always come off as such a sincere and transparent guy.
I hate the unwritten rule of not being a mark for someone. Like when Punk returned and visited NXT only pics of him with the women were posted. People accused him of just about the ladies. Nah, cuz dudes don’t wanna be hazed cuz they look like marks.

I've got to say, I've met Shawn at one of his book signings in 2015. Couldn't have been nicer, but the whole thing felt rushed. I had so many things I wanted to say to him that when I got up there, I was too in awe being face to face with one of my favorite wrestlers of all time! I was super nervous meeting you, but we've had a few good interactions on Twitter at that point, and Always was a big supporter of your T4 Show, so youkinda knew of me through that. So when I came up to your merch table you were one of the nicest guys ever! That experience didn't feel rushed, we had a little conversation. Raven was there next to you, I got something from him for my brother as well. Bought an 8x10 and bWo shirt from you that you signed that I still have to this day. It was GREAT. Only regret was that I didn't ask to get a picture. But still, made my night meeting you, and I'll never forget it.
I’m so glad that I watched this video. His story makes me feel better about an Awkward experience. I had meeting Sean Michaels myself. and hey, people are going to be people. some have bad days some have good days. I’ve learned over the years to not try to take things to heart anymore.
When Shawn first retired he definitely had resentment over so many of the guys adopting the Super Kick as a finisher so that's probably one of his issues with Richards It was ridiculous though because when the Invasion happened it seemed like most of the ECW and WCW guys had the super kick as their finisher. Justin Credible, Lance Storm, Chuck Palumbo and Stevie were all using it at the same time 😅 Fast forward to this generation and the Usos and Young Bucks have it as a normal move lmao
Got a lot of respect for Stevie Richards, love your honesty and content, there is a genuineness to you that a lot of fans of the early 2000s appreciate. Thanks.
The journey from the bottom UP takes just as long as it did to originally sink. I do not doubt that Shawn was slipping. I think he was succeeding sometimes, failing, and falling on others. But he didnt give up. “The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.”
Don't put people on pedestals. Doesn't matter if they are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic, Buddhists, or anything else. We are equally flawed. It's unfortunate that you experience what you did.
Ironic thing is Shawn wants everyone to put him on a pedestal and still acts this way when people give him props. I've worked with many people like this. You can't be nice even when trying to be professional. Just have to avoid them at all costs. I wish Bret would have KO'd his ass right after he did Vince. At least Vince stood there and took his lick for what he did.
I also have to mention that just because someone’s a Christian doesn’t mean they don’t curse, have troubles, listen to secular music, watch secular stuff etc etc. To be Christian is to know you are a sinner and that through Jesus’s forgiveness we are saved.
Let's see if Stevie reads this. I met Stevie at the crystal mall in 2005 in waterford ct, in an electronic boutique. I was green as grass, but he talked with me for 10 minutes, we joked about a match he had just had with hardcore holly and I said it was so good they should do it every week (it was a very physical match so I was just yanking his chain lol). We talked about gaming. He was getting the 360 and a bunch of games. I had JUST started in the business so he asked me where I was working. I'm an idiot and thought he meant like,.my shoot job, so I said oh lookin for warehouse stuff etc and he politely said oh ok cool and didn't call me on it. Bottom line I met one of my heroes, and he lived up to everything I'd hope he'd be. Over the years I've worked shows with raven, Johnny Swinger and a few others and all say Stevie is a cool guy. I can vouch for it, Stevie is a hero you can meet. God bless sir.
@silveredgrunion7196 I remember the crystal mall! I was first in line to pick up the brand spanking new PS2 day one at the Electronics Botique. Lots of good memories of that store. I hear that the mall itself is a shell of what it use to be.
My mom wrestled with Gangrel, Cheerleader Melissa, and a few others with APW in Haywood CA in 2010-2011. She was Jeckles the Jester's "Manager". Think Paul Bearer and Luna mashed together. I'm glad she got to live out her dream for a bit and meet some of her heros. She'd always been massively fat, but she got relatively small (lost half her weight) for a few years and took advantage to train and work wrestling in her 40s.

@@KOHoxton no my friend. The only way to know if someone is saved is if they believe the gospel, i.e. that they are a sinner in need of a savior, and that Jesus Christ is God and is that Savior, and that He died on the Cross, was buried, and resurrected on the third day. That's it. Salvation comes from God's grace, granted as a free gift to all that believe. While it is true that Jesus told us to love one another, unfortunately some Christians remain so carnal and focused on their flesh that they just don't act that way at all. But that doesn't mean they have lost their salvation (which is impossible) or that they weren't ever saved. Because salvation is 100% about faith in Jesus Christ, and 0% about our own deeds, either good or bad.
I'm a firm believer in the whole "never meet your heroes" thing, but I can't imagine actually having to work with/around them because like stecie said, you want to tell them what they've meant to you and you're hoping they'll be happy to hear it and maybe give you a big hug and even tell you they like your work and so forth....but, what if they don't??? Then you're in a weird spot. For anybody bored enough to still be reading this, I'm 43 now but as a kid I was a huge spud Webb fan. In retrospect, I don't know why other than the fascination with him winning a dunk contest at 5'7 and I was 5'9 at the time and I guess I felt like if he could make it so could I. Well, I'm 15 and the Sacramento kings who he played for at the time, were playing the Atlanta Hawks which was about 100 miles north of where I lived in Columbus, Ga so my parents got us tickets and my family went to the game and we got there early to try to catch the shoot around which was your best chance to get autographs. Spud was leaving the court and there I was face to face with my favorite player and asked him to sign my card. He literally says to me he'll be right back. He just has to take a shower. Looking back, that was a polite way of denying my autograph and basically telling me to fuck off but at 15, I believed he'd be right back. Well, he didn't come right back and I didn't see him again until game time. I took my second shot during the end of half time where he was right on the corner of the court and I literally was ballsy enough to walk on to the court(just barely, but enough to where I could have gotten thrown out and probably would have if I wasn't just a kid. This time, I swear I'm not making this up, he put his hands on my shoulders and lightly, very lightly backed me up and said get off the court kid. I never gave two shits about him after that. Then it was either the next year or year after when he was traded back to the Atlanta Hawks and I was there to see I believe it was the Indiana Pacers and while I didn't care about Spud, my mom knew I once did and was taking a few pictures of him for me and he sent a ball boy over to tell her to stop taking picture of him. I never could have imagined a guy 5'7 who was barely what you'd consider a name in the NBA would be that much of an asshole, but this guy just really was the biggest dickhead I've encountered and I've met a lot of athletes and wrestlers. But yeah, sometimes it's best you never meet your heroes because odds are it'll never live up to the story you've imagined in your head. Then again, a lot of guys are way nicer than you could imagine and a lot of it is just your approach and timing. The timing you never really habe full control over because you never know what's going on in that person's life and if maybe they're having a bad day, so if you want to meet people, keep that in mind and try not to take it personal. Also, hello, handshake, do you mind if I take a quick picture with you? That's it. Keep it polite and keep it short. At the end of the day, it's your experience with the person, not their experience with you and you have to know whether it's even appropriate to ask for a picture. Sometimes just a hand shake is all you think you'll get and it's best to stop right there rather than press your luck. But yeah, always keep it short and sweet and generally you'll have an okay experience with a guy but telling them your life story is always a big risk because trust me, you aren't the first person to tell them what you're about to say and they don't always have it in them to entertain your story. Hello, handshake, picture, thank you and that's usually a good way to go about it.

So sorry Stevie. I'm a Christian and wouldn't do that to anyone. He's an elite wrestler athlete but graciousness and kindness should accompany the change in spirit; especially with "the boys".
I would be crushed in that situation too. Shawn is my hero as well, I met him last year at a convention, shook his hand, we exchanged pleasantries, took a picture and I was on my way. I didn't have time to tell him how much of a positive impact he had on me or anything like that, maybe he'd be different with fans vs how he was with colleagues, but it was nice to meet him, a bucket list item checked off for sure.
HBK was a complete dickhead up until a few years ago. You are lucky you met him a year ago, if you met him 5-10 years ago you would have had a much different experience.
That was uncalled for by Shawn. And it sucked that it happened. But i see it as a good thing. That you dont hold that hero to that standard that you have. Id admire the work hes put in and leave it at that. The "Never meet your heroes" can be painful but you can turn in into a positive and better yourself. Thats my opinionat least.

Stevie has got to be one of the realest personalities in pro wrestling. Feels super rare for people in his position to not have an ego or insecurities that swallow them whole. Bless you Stevie. You are one of the most authentic.
I don't think Shawn ever lost the heightened competitive nature of the business from when he broke in and took Stevie's comments as an advantage to exploit, because he had found (with all due respect) a mark and possibly thought he was pandering and kissing his ass. Whether that meant he lost respect for Stevie or if he was just playing games because he figured he had him under his thumb, who knows.
Maybe. I remember him saying he doesn’t like Dolph Ziggler because he was too much of a copycat, and he hated when people used the superkick. It’s possible that he was worried that Stevie would be copying him too. I think he’s changed since then, a lot of wrestlers and his own employees are inspired by him and use the super kick. He’s great friends with two of his biggest fans, Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole. It’s possible that he has a different perspective and appreciation for people that are inspired by him now.
@@fangirlroni1937 Being retired certainly helps with the change since he no longer has to worry about his "spot." But I remember Rene Dupree talking about how Shawn cost Ricky Banderas/Judas Mesias/Mil Muertes a job with the company just because the latter did something Shawn thought was similar to a DX taunt during a tryout match. Let me repeat that: he cost a guy a potential job with the WWE just because he "thought" the guy was copying one of his moves/taunts. Despite his status in the company, it really demonstrates on insecure Shawn could be at times.
@@fangirlroni1937 It's such a joke the way Shawn thinks he owns the superkick. Many did it before and since. Just because he made it a finisher doesn't mean everyone else should. It's just a kick.
Sad to hear Stevie's stories and you can see how it effects him. I had a similar situation with Roddy Piper when we were on a show together (nobody was buying a ticket to see me) He asked me a favour and while I was happy to do it and wasn't looking for anything for it (except the thirty bucks it cost me) he was really stand-offish and I felt like a waiter serving a shitty customer. I heard tales from some of the other boys about fun conversations and interactions they'd had with him over the weekend and I'd had nothing, not even a "thanks". Never did pay me the thirty bucks either, and he made a killing on the gimmick table. Never meet your heroes.
I have heard a few stories over the years that Shawn could still be his old self when he came back. However I do believe he has changed a lot since then. His NXT employees have nothing but great things to say about him, even after leaving the company. It’s possible that he finally matured as he got older, or maybe he’s just easier to work with as a boss than a wrestler. I also wonder if Shawn has some serious mental issues that he was not aware of at the time.
>His NXT employees have nothing but great things to say about him No way, guys who would be literally blacklisted from the industry for _speaking out,_ don't speak out! How many _decades_ until dirt on Vince surfaced? Years after Ashley Massaro, Benoit, hell, half a century covering up for Moolah's _sex trafficking_ and Snuka's _murder_
It could have come across as trying to get a celebrity to endorse his friends band. It could have come off very very different to Shawn. Surprised these are his examples.
@@brianmilici3473 i was kind of thinking the same thing. Maybe Shawn thought he was being propositioned to endorse Stevie's friend. Maybe Shawn thought that it was patronizing of Stevie to assume he liked Christian rock. There's probably more to the story than even Stevie knows.
He was being a mark and was pushing his ideologies onto others. It's no secret that Shawn Michaels kind of sucks as a person, but most of the time there's an actual reason for his outbursts.
Thank you for sharing this and allowing yourself to get emotional. I get like this when I'm disappointed at a negative reaction from someone i care about and I had good intentions. It sucks. It also reminds me that can come off cold and uptight at work. I get so passionate to do things right that I might come off cold with in reality in that moment I might have been pissed at someone else for not taking the job as seriously as me. Maybe that's what happened with shawn? Something unrelated set him off and you just got the redirected frustration. But yeah a person like him I avoid because they're hard to read. I hate trying to figure out what personality they are in the moment
I love that there are lessons in everything we experience, and that Stevie took his experience with Shawn and made sure it was positive for anyone he'd encounter in the future.
He always seemed like he was. He's that guy that lives for the validation of others. He always just wanted to be liked but always came off like he was trying too hard. It's why nobody liked him as a Wrestler.
I’m really sorry you had to go through that. What a dehumanizing experience. I’ll gladly take any music recommendations from you or anyone else reading this.
Shawn was a deeply flawed and insecure person. He was off the drugs when he made his comeback and found God but he was still a work in progress, like a lot of people are. And just like the Jerhico story they told at the end of this clip, a story can change when more context comes to light.
Well said. I think it took a while for Shawn to change and he wasn’t as great of a person as he was made out to be in the 2000s. He had improved but it took a while for him to be the good guy he is now, and have his demons under full control. You will find mostly negative stories about him in the 90’s, a little here and there in the 2000’s and so far close to none now. His employees have nothing but great things to say about him, even the ones that do not work there anymore. I’m also glad that the context was added by the interviewer for the other story at the end, because Shane Helms told this story in his interview as well and made it seem like Shawn was attacking Jericho for no reason, when the full context makes you realize that Shawn was right to behave the way he did in that instance, and even Jericho admitted so in his book and he apologized to Shawn.
Jericho talked in his first book about returning to Christ. So I'm glad he cleared the air after Helms and others tried to pounce with "fake Christian" snark. I'm sure it was embarrassing and would have been easier to just let Shawn eat the blame. Jericho has his imperfect moments. And Shawn does too. Weaponizing their faith against them in those moments is just gross.
This reminds me of something I learned along the way. Not everyone reacts to compliments or genuine gratitude in the way you’d think. There have been times I’ve thanked someone or expressed a compliment.. and the person took it exactly the opposite of how I’d have expected. And it’s sad, it’s almost like Stevie said. “You think I’m so great?? Let me show you exactly how great I am..”
I almost wonder if Shawn was so gone into his faith that he felt like Stevie was idolizing him and reacted very harshly to it. Doesn't have to be the case but you never know.
I watched wrestling every week growing up and I never would have remembered Stevie Richards as a wrestler to be honest, but seeing his videos here I gotta say I respect him alot and I'm glad he does this. Keep up the good work.
If you watched every week , how would you not remember? BWO in ECW, Ravens Flock in WCW and RTC in WWF. These were all big stables in the 3 biggest companies???
@@mrselection7814 Because he just wasn't that big of a name friend. he wasn't Kane, undertaker, rock, stone cold, kurt angle, chris jericho, sting, hogan, Scott hall, kevin nash, golddust, booker T, trish stratus, lita, stacy keibler , the list goes on and on and on and on. Probably not more complicated than Richards took the superkick...which was hysterical real time because it was like taking people's elbow from Rock...but Richard's was allowed to do that in ecw, likely because Adam's used move first, whether Stevie knew that or not.
Stevie, I’m so sorry you went through this. As Maya Angelou once said, “When people show you who they are the first time, believe them.” I never entirely believed the narrative about Shawn turning a new leaf. Shawn likely converted to make himself feel better after the turbulence he brought on himself. It was a PR move when he came back to the locker room. Toxic people like that never truly improve or learn. You’re a better man than he’s ever been. I’ve had some disappointing experiences meeting idols too. I’m a big longtime fan of yours. You played some GREAT heels and was massively underrated. Enjoying the informative videos!

Met Stevie at a gym in Columbia, SC back in 2003, he was with Victoria and some others, working out before Raw…every bit as genuine and approachable then as he is in these videos. Good dude. Hope this channel brings him a ton of continued success.
I met Lex Luger a couple years ago was a bucket list moment. I gifted him some vintage magazines and posters. Then he gave em back to me and was a complete prick the whole meet n greet his wife too. Was charging 60 an auto saw my replica belt said those are a 100. I paid it, got it signed then vowed I'd never ever again. I just kept it business.
Wrestlers can be real assholes when it comes to signings and meet n' greets. One thing that really bothered me was when DDP was doing preliminary showings of the Jake Roberts movie. They did like 3 or 4. So this is before the movie even got released. I went to one of their showings in Portland. Of course I freaking loved the film.

This is crazy because hearing this from him really brings things full circle. Stevie using the Superkick as a Finisher too might've fueled something into HBK
When Shawn first retired he definitely had resentment over so many of the guys adopting the Super Kick as a finisher so that's probably one of his issues with Richards
It was ridiculous though because when the Invasion happened it seemed like most of the ECW and WCW guys had the super kick as their finisher. Justin Credible, Lance Storm, Chuck Palumbo and Stevie were all using it at the same time 😅

That's it. Salvation comes from God's grace, granted as a free gift to all that believe. @@Myrridan19not for nothing but I've met plenty of people who were saved but are scumbags

This. Some people can forgive you being rude to them, but will never forgive you being nice. Those aren't good people.
100%
I still remember completing "Here Comes the Pain'" story mode on the PS2 with Stevie Richards! 😄 Much love my man!
Did you take him all the way to the main event at Wrestlemania?
Stevie , I met you at Dallas’s yoga place in Georgia several years ago. You stopped what you were doing and treated me like a real priority….over the top nice and gave me the tour of the place . I still have the pictures you were nice enough to take of me at the studio…….ill never forget it.
Dude 7:17 seriously hurt to watch, To see such a kind gesture just get thrown back in your face by a childhood hero.. That shit is heartbreaking
Hopefully Shawn sees it and apologizes. Like Hogan did to Mick after all those years.
Stevie, you’re a great man. I appreciate your authenticity and transparency.
Or maybe he’s just a prick
Nope, he's just an asshole. Nothing more to it
@@fangirlroni1937 It's such a joke the way Shawn thinks he owns the superkick. Many did it before and since. Just because he made it a finisher doesn't mean everyone else should. It's just a kick.
Sad to hear Stevie's stories and you can see how it effects him. I had a similar situation with Roddy Piper when we were on a show together (nobody was buying a ticket to see me)
He asked me a favour and while I was happy to do it and wasn't looking for anything for it (except the thirty bucks it cost me) he was really stand-offish and I felt like a waiter serving a shitty customer.
>His NXT employees have nothing but great things to say about him
No way, guys who would be literally blacklisted from the industry for _speaking out,_ don't speak out! How many _decades_ until dirt on Vince surfaced? Years after Ashley Massaro, Benoit, hell, half a century covering up for Moolah's _sex trafficking_ and Snuka's _murder_
I wonder what was going through Shawn's mind regarding the CD incident. How did he interpret the gesture of receiving the CD?
It could have come across as trying to get a celebrity to endorse his friends band. It could have come off very very different to Shawn. Surprised these are his examples.
@@brianmilici3473 i was kind of thinking the same thing. Maybe Shawn thought he was being propositioned to endorse Stevie's friend. Maybe Shawn thought that it was patronizing of Stevie to assume he liked Christian rock.
There's probably more to the story than even Stevie knows.
Just awful… sometimes it’s better to not meet your heroes
I'm sorry that happened Stevie you seem like a stand up dude and it sounds to me like to you put yourself out there and hbk stomped on your heart.
I love that there are lessons in everything we experience, and that Stevie took his experience with Shawn and made sure it was positive for anyone he'd encounter in the future.
Shawn might have assumed Stevie was a butt kisser after telling him that stuff. But it's too bad it turned out that way.
He always seemed like he was. He's that guy that lives for the validation of others. He always just wanted to be liked but always came off like he was trying too hard. It's why nobody liked him as a Wrestler.
@@justinlast2lastharder749who are you referring to
Yeah, Stevie was the Al Snow to Raven's Mick Foley.
@@quentinkaasa47 ... AL??

It's a shame how Shawn treated Dax Harwood.
@@jjalkman1999 Jericho is a trump supporter, an ideology based on fear and racism. So i would say he's imperfect quite often. (As we all are)
This reminds me of something I learned along the way.
Huge respect for Steve Richards!!
***Stevie***
I think Shawn definitely had an elitist personality. I'm sorry for the experience you had and it's okay to feel the way you do.
I think he’s a paranoid insecure egomaniac. He prob thought Stevie was trying to kiss his ass
I'm sorry but he was very mid card wrestler that I barely remembered existed. Sometimes that's life. But again i love his videos and think he's a genuine person.
@M.O.M.I you're probably just getting on in years and the memories are starting to slip gramps. I still remember lower mid careers from when I started watching in 2008 like the highlanders and dh Smith. It's all good gramps, father time comes for us all.

@@M.O.M.I it is what it is. We can't all be old.
I am so sorry Stevie. You are the man in my eyes. I am glad you would never act that way toward someone who admires you.
Probably not more complicated than Richards took the superkick...which was hysterical real time because it was like taking people's elbow from Rock...but Richard's was allowed to do that in ecw, likely because Adam's used move first, whether Stevie knew that or not.
You're my Hero Stevie
that's gotta suck...I know you're apologizing because you're getting emotional about that but you can tell what it meant to you..I'm sorry dude
This is quickly becoming my favorite wrestler YT channel.
Stevie, I’m so sorry you went through this.
As Maya Angelou once said, “When people show you who they are the first time, believe them.”
I never entirely believed the narrative about Shawn turning a new leaf.
Man, seeing your passion for your career and the people who inspired you makes me wish your career took off to bigger heights. However, if they did, I don’t think we would have this wonderful channel of yours Stevie! I appreciate your open and honest recollection of Shawn. 😢
Stevie I have so much respect for you, I love listening to you sharing your experiences with us, thank you Stevie
Stevie Richards is such a genuine guy. I believe he was hurt by what Sean Michaels said. He didn't have to admit to that, many wouldn't.
Stevie Richards is awesome. Just a great guy, no question about it.
Sorry you went through that bro.
You still paid him...
Not trying to be funny, but I think he would've respected you if you chose to not get your stuff signed, told him off and walked away.
After, DDP gets on the mic and says "hey guys come on up here to the front if you wanna get some pics or whatever".
I go to get in line and then find out that they were charging. It was fairly cheap, but to me it was the principle. I already supported you by buying this movie ticket. You're still nickle and diming?
@@danman1789 That carny mindset never really goes away. They're always selling you the next thing.
It feels like Shawn saw you as a fan more than a peer after the compliment.
I really want to give Stevie a hug, right now.
Totally agree with you dude. Much respect to you indeed 😊
