Another way to calm down VERY FAST is called "the physiological sigh," which I learned from Andrew Hubberman (he's a neurobiologist) on his excellent podcast, "the Hubberman Lab Podcast," which is excellent, and if you're not aware of this podcast, I know you'd find it very interesting. Basically, you take one deep breath thru the nose, then another smaller breath (whatever you can squeeze in without strain) thru the nose, and then a long, full exhale thru the mouth, like a sigh. Personally, I don't like these physical manipulations. It's a lot of fussing and I never know whether I am hitting the right spot(s). I have another free advice for you that I have come across through personal experience. I used to struggle to go to sleep at times because of extreme stress from work and emotional factors (bereavements etc) I realised that I had to sleep though so I ended up finding the following easy technique. My background is in media and communication so it occurred to me that we often use stories to calm ourselves down and go to rest. Short info: Firstly try and give yourself at least 6-7hrs to sleep as that is the minimum to avoid mental longterm decline. Ideally sleep in a cool room, go to bed after a shower and don't sleep in the same room as the one you are working in. Now once you are in bed and have closed your eyes imagine your favorite comforting TV show (I guess this might also work with your favorite movie or book). You can try and think of your favorite episode. Place yourself as a character into the TV show. Play out the rest of the episode with yourself in the TV show. I have found that usually within 10-15 minutes (hard to say exact) I will go to sleep. I never reach the end of an "episode". It's all about placing yourself in a comforting environment that is all about calmness and enjoyment - it draws your thoughts away from anxiety/stress/fear/anger.
