WOW! Nice freebie tank. Keep raising those Monsters. The red tail grows so fast. 1" to 5" in just 2 months. AMAZING.
The fish stores need to warn people how big the catfish can get. As for the tank I got a 40 gal vintage aquarium (the one that had the chrome metal frame) for free too.
I can't believe someone bought a redtail for a 10 gallon! Not too long ago my LFS had a 90 gallon filled with about 30 baby Arapaimas only about 3 inches long. I wonder how many went to small tanks. Although, they usually inform customers of the max size of the fish sold.
I believe that's a 72 gallon bowfront. I picked up an old one that had the center brace let go on me. I ran it for 6 months with the water 4 inches from the top to relieve the stress and it did fine. I eventually replaced it though, and the newer ones have a stronger, improved center brace.
That's awesome you get to spend time with the baby red tail catfish and grow him out for Ohio Fish Rescue! I cant wait to see the monthly updates on his growth spans! Great job Matt! Keep up the great work!!!
He is sooooo cute!!!! Yes we'd definitely would love to see you document him. I almost bought one a couple months ago but I did my research and saw how fast/big they grow. :-(

I've got a 6000 gallon I've been looking everywhere for a redtail catfish
I seen the same kind of tank in the trash same size and all I had no way to get it to where I live.

How come your tanks are always so baren looking? Is that for safety reasons or something?
Decorations in tank for the most part are visually for the pet owner. Ofc you can add caves and hiding spots for fish but for the larger fish that he keeps large decorations are more likely to injure your fish than anything. Just go to the king of DIY he has lost (and documented) at least one maybe two arrowanas die bc they got spooked and severely injured themselves on decorations.
May want to watch the clown loach the redtail will definately have a go at him when he is only maybe 2 inches bigger, just saying
