- Marina Sirtis, Deanna Troi in TV's Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard, meets with fans, answers questions, and puts on a great panel with an awesome diva attitude at the 2018 Toronto ComiCon.
Marina Sirtis (born 29 March 1955) is a British-American actress. She is best known for her role as Counselor Deanna Troi on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and the four feature films that followed, as well as other appearances in the Star Trek franchise.
In 1986, Sirtis relocated to the United States. When casting Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gene Roddenberry was inspired to ask the exotic-looking Sirtis to audition for a role after seeing the film Aliens with Bob Justman, which featured the prominent Latina character Vasquez, played by Jenette Goldstein. Sirtis and Denise Crosby initially tried out for each other's eventual roles on The Next Generation. Sirtis' character was going to be named Lt. Macha Hernandez, the Security Chief. Gene Roddenberry decided to switch them, and Macha Hernandez became Tasha Yar. Sirtis recalls that on the day she received the call offering her the role of Troi, she was actually packing to return to Britain, because her six-month visa had expired.
Deanna Troi is a half-human, half-Betazoid. Her Betazoid abilities allow her to read the emotions of others. Her position on the Enterprise-D is ship's counselor, looking after the crew's well-being and serving as trusted advisor to Captain Picard, with a position next to him on the bridge. Initially, the writers found it difficult to write for Troi and even left her out of four first-season episodes. Sirtis felt her job was in jeopardy after the first season, but was overjoyed when Roddenberry took her aside at Jonathan Frakes' wedding and told her that the season-two premiere episode, "The Child", would centre on Troi.

@@Velldog lwaxana is my favourite character in all of star trek. I've watched everything except discovery+picard, but i dont think im missing much.
Lwaxana is GOLD. There's incredible depth to her character, more so than most others on the show - but most importantly she's hilarious. Every scene she's in is enjoyable

It's rare to see a woman as comfortable in crowd/forum situations as Sirtis clearly is. She appears honestly to love doing these gatherings.
Iv listened to Marina a few times interviewed in TV and radio she is refreshingly honest about everything very down to earth doesn't appear to have let her fame go to her head , a great person, a great woman .

Marina is kinda nuts. She is very honest and open about her life which makes her very easy to listen to.

I think the fact that she is this year starring in a real low end pantomime in the UK, might say something about her reputation within the industry however. Candid is great but I think she's pissed a fair few people off, who are no longer offering her work.

One of the best Con Q&A's I've ever watched ... rare to see someone SO proud of a classic show they appeared on, and it's always refreshing to hear about the lack of drama and backstabbing. Marina is amazing.

Not just three people awkwardly pushing a table back. And with the speaker’s back to the audience-why would they ‘script’ that? That’s just stupid.
What a great appearance at a convention, especially ending with a thank you to the viewers of STNG. Marina we thank you for being a part of ST and adding so much to the ST universe, Deanna was a large part of TNG's much deserved success. Wish you much success in your future endeavors, you deserve all good things that come your way. I met your 'mother' Majel Barrett Rodenbarry at a convention in Fort Myers FL and got to speak with and she said how much she enjoyed being your mom on and off the screen. She was a classy lady thanking the viewers for watching all ST series over the year, you learned that lesson well.

Saw a video of just her glaring into the camera and tearing broad strips off celebrities who HAVE NO TIME FOR THEIR FANS!! Admired her ever since.
She often thanks fans for her life style...her Car and house..she may be loud and be opinionated but she is very humble as well and lives in reality where she knows if it wasn't for people loving the show she wouldn't be so comfortable today.
I respect her for that which outweighs anything she may say in conversation that isn't pc
I knew she was going to make me laugh, she's done it plenty of times before. What I didn't expect was that she was also going to make me cry, but I'm very glad that she did.

Great interview!! Though this was more like a stand up routine! Absolutely great though!! Didn't know she was born into poverty in England I thought she was from the states. She does a very good accent! I would have never known until I listened to her now. How I've went for years not knowing this is absolutely crazy!
I love that she created Troi's accent. When Troi speaks, you can clearly hear its NOT Marina Sirtis' english accent, its something entirely different and unique. Im not sure if its officially a Betazoid accent, but it really gives the character more depth. It was smart of Marina to do it too, because if she just hid her english accent, as some actors do, Troi would sound lifeless and boring. I also love how Marina Sirtis is clearly NOT anything like Deanna Troi. Actually, theres a mirror universe version of Troi that is a lot like Marina

Marina Sirtis became Majel Barrett and it is AMAZING! I LOVE Lwaxana Troi's character because I KNEW she wasn't acting at all! THIS is what I saw when I watched this! It just reminds me that although she is this boisterous personality, Marina had so much more to give. I'm glad she became their advocate.
She’ll fully become Majel Barrett when she becomes the voice of the computer on federation starships.

I was a huge trek fan most of my life.. Kinda dwindled to a low embers in my latter years. But seeing Marina here and listening to her and to see how she truly is. Makes me sad that she was not one of my favorite characters. I can't believe I preferred episodes with Weasley in them (No I did not misspell his name) I, like many, learned to hate that character. Anyways. Marina. I loved your kicking out the moderator. I loved your interaction with the fans and I love you. And, I loved all 52 minutes of your panel. You killed it. Thank you!
Well let's be honest, she didn't exactly get the best lines. Troi was much like Dax and 7 of 9 - someone for the teenage boys to ogle at. Sad really. I'm glad Discovery has a more mature approach to it's female cast members.
@@peterstean2138 Given that those shows were written by 20th century writers (men mostly) in the 90's and Discovery has a bevy of various writers here in the 21st century I should bloody well hope so.
Went to an original Star Trek Convention back in 1978/79 Gene Roddenberry and most of the original cast were as well. Had a poster from it for 25 years.

She is really a wonderful lady. I am so glad I got to meet her and hang out with her @ Phoenix Comicon '09. She was so real--and down to Earth. I always loved Deanna and her character really helped me in real life deal with some pretty awful heavy shit. I got to tell her that in person and she held my hand and we had a little moment. Just a cool lady all around. People who mistake her stage act here for the "real" Marina and say she's a "bitch" or whatever piss me off! She's not at all. I love you Marina!! 💜

I used to hate her character until the movies where she started to put a little bit of her personality into the character.

I'm a massive Star Trek and Spurs fan. Marina Sirtis is just about my most favourite person in the world.
She is my favorite actor from the TNG Crew to see at these Conventions, etc! Her stories and her presentation is much more humorous than any of her colleagues! She OWNS the room!
Yeah I saw her at the Winnipeg Comicon and was kind of blown away by how different she seemed in person from the character of Deanna Troi. In the end I guess it really is just a role. Robert Duncan Mcneill too. He was very humble, never got irritated with all my questions, and dressed like a lumberjack! Not a lot like Tom Paris.
Wow. I really got respect for her when she told, how she stood up to her actor friends (worf and data). Really impressed. But I don't think that paramount didn't liked her. I mean. She was the only of 4 people from TNG who returned back quite often in DS9 or voyager besides Barclay in voyager and O'Brien and Worf on DS9 AND she was in the last episode of Enterprise
In an era of stage-managed celebrities, Marina is a joy. So delightfully self-aware.
