    It's not a love song to Alistair Crowley - it's Ozzy's way of rebuking evil. "I think your life was tragic" "I want to understand". He's asking why he had to be that way.

      Ha. People in the occult know, yes it was. All of them checked out and dabbled with his stuff. Beatles, Jimmy Page, Marilyn Manson and almost all the rock stars did in some way. I know Ozzy did. I didn't say he was a Satanist but he checked into all of that. As in dabble in magic. Another one that popped in my mind, David Bowie. All got into Thelema at one point . I don't think he's praising Crowley but I also don't think it was anti Crowley . He played a huge part in rock n roll .

      Yes. Crowley was not a Satanist, he was a Demonologist - the difference is rather important.
      Satanists (the ones who aren't either playacting, or using the name for what is actually an atheist philosophy of self-centrism (Hello, Anton LaVey)) _worship_ a figure they believe holds power over the Earth, in the hope of favours.
      Demonologists seek to _command_ demons to do their bidding, compelling and constraining them in the name of God and/or Christ, and with (often rather minor) bribes and threats. You can't be a demonologist without first accepting some form of Jewish, Christian and/or Muslim theology.
      Note I do not assert that any of what these people believe is objectively true, but what goes on in their heads determines how they interpret the world, and how they therefore choose to behave. The same is true of everyone, of course.

    This is a commentary on Crowley’s life. When Ozzy says “Won’t you ride my white horse” he’s saying wont you switch to the side of righteousness since in Revelation 19 Jesus is depicted as riding a white horse. “It’s symbolic of course” Ozzy then clarifies. Reading and dissecting lyrics are important to UNDERSTAND the real meaning.

    I don’t think Ozzy is praising Crowley in the song. The lyrics “what went on in your head?”
    “You’re lifestyle to me seemed so tragic “
    “Did you think you were pure?”
    But there are true references about Mr Crowley, they did scatter his afterbirth ??
    And he would sign off letters “Polemically yours” polemically being an aggressive attack on someone or their beliefs.
    Ozzy believes in Jesus and always wore a crucifix.
    Probably needed to, singing about a man that wrote about the red fella who lives in that hot place !

  • @robertutes4850
    @robertutes4850 Місяць тому +24

    No Dude, 1 verse is Ozzy questioning Crowley’s sanity. He also presents him as someone who was a magic-based fraudster.
    2 verse is as Ozzy putting forth that Aleister was not as impressive as he may have thought himself to be.
    3 verse that Aleister Crowley is someone whom Ozzy does not look up to as an idol, role model or anything even remotely like that, Ozzy is implying something like fate ultimately having caught up him, and accordingly compensating him for all of his misdeeds, and that Aleister enjoyed using opium, Ozzy wasn't into that.
    4 as someone who doesn’t understand the doctrine of Aleister Crowley, is questioning where exactly his teachings come from. Ozzy suggest that it came from some type of contentious source.
    This went on a lot in the 70s and 80s, people saying Oz was a satanist, if you listen to the words of his songs, it's the exact opposite

The whole satanic BS related to Ozzy and pretty much all Metal music drives me f'king crazy! Yes, Mr.Crowley was a satanic guy but Ozzy isn't singing praises to him. Ozzy read a book by him and the song is his questions after reading it. He's calling Crowley out on his beliefs and questioning why he became the way he did. Listen to the lyrics! But that's exactly what's dangerous when any Christians believe that everything is negative energy. For me, strict believers are often negatively loaded because they don't allow other opinions. I'm an atheist myself, I've never been even remotely religious, I grew up with metal. I discovered this song when I was 12 and loved it because I liked the tragic guitar solo so much, a masterpiece, unsurpassed to this day, I always didn't care what was being sung anyway. I usually didn't care much about the lyrics, I just care about the music most of the time. But satanism is more sympathetic to me. I love black metal. When I visited my cousin in the USA, she kept talking about the evil black clothing, about negative energy, and even invited a Christian rock musician, who was very nice by the way, but I thought, what's all that about? Are these people really that into it? that you think that as an atheist etc. you have negative energy? seriously?

    Tell me about “Mr. Crowley.”
    > That was Ozzy’s title, and it was obviously about Aleister Crowley. Because he was a satanist and into dark stuff and all that, I didn’t want to make a negative song. I wanted to make it a little bit like talking to Mr. Crowley and going, “What the f--k were you thinking? What were you doing? Jimmy Page was into Aleister Crowley and gave one of his books to a roadie who toured with Led Zeppelin. That roadie went on to tour for Ozzy. Teh roadie showed the bood to Ozzy. Ozzy didn't really know much about Aleister Crowley and if you ever read anything he wrote it's very cryptic. Hence the line, "I want to know what you meant". He was actually an extremely impressive person who had a lot of questionable beliefs. The line "won't you ride my white horse" refers to Crowley's heroin addiction.

      Ozzy famously has done enough drugs to kill a medium sized country. Saying that he was a Christian at the height of his drug use when he wrote this song is as much of a strech as you can make. At one point, Ozzy was so messed up on stage, a bat hit him in the face and he bit the head off of it, not knowing it was a living animal. But hey, we can all be Christian in hindsight.

    Ozzy is not a satanist. This is not a song praising Alister Crowley. It’s more of a song questioning him as to why he was into dark shit, calling it all a bunch of bullsh*t (u fooled all the people with magic) and offering him the white horse, symbolic of the christian way out of the evil he’s into. anyway, r.i.p Randy. Aleistar Crowley was such a fascinating figure. The cliff notes version is that he was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (a mystical society formed by a group of Freemasons, based heavily on the Order of the Rose Cross), but later formed a splinter group, the Ordo Templii Orientis (aka. Thelema) which leaned more into "dark" magick, though not Satanism per se, but because Crowley LOVED media attention so much, he played up his own evil reputation, even going so far as to invent his own form of numerology specifically designed to make himself come up in the system as the Beast of Revelations. For all his eccentricities, he was indirectly an inspiration to other occultists including L. Ron Hubbard (founder of Scientology), Gerald Gardener (founder of Wicca), and Anton LaVay (founder of The Church of Satan).
    Of course, most of the demonic and occult imagery around heavy metal artists was just aesthetic. Ironically, with all the "Satanic Panic" around heavy metal, one of the few hit songs from an actual Satanic band was just a peace-loving hippie song ("One Tin Soldier" by Coven).

    Just cuz Ozzy doesn't say "Crowley you are a bad man," doesn't mean he's in favor of him. Ozzy is taking a critical eye of the man's life and asking him what he really believed, and talking about how tragic his lifestyle was and offering for him to come to the side of Christianity ("won't you ride my white horse"). Wanted to know what he meant and how much was a lie vs true beliefs, being inquisitive, and being curious about the man aren't endorsements.
    Haven't you ever wondered what it must be like inside the minds of evil men?

    Ozzy left the band Black Sabbath in 1980. This is from his first solo album after leaving Black Sabbath.
    "Mr. Crowley" is a song about English occultist Aleister Crowley. Written by Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Randy Rhoads and bass guitarist/lyricist Bob Daisley. It was released on Osbourne's debut solo album Blizzard of Ozz in September 1980 in the United Kingdom. A live version was released as a UK single in November 1980. In North America, the studio version was released as a single in 1981.

    Ozzy, in an interview once said that he didn't understand where some people could think he was a Devil worshiper. He mentioned how the great actor Vincent Price, who starred in many shocking, even disturbing (for their time), absolutely classic horror films in the 50's to at least the 70's, and probably later that that. He did voice over work for a couple of very famous musicians like Alice Cooper (Black Widow), and "The King of Poo" himself, Michael Jackson (Thiller). Anyway, Ozzy said that nobody thought that nobody believed that Vincent Price was a terrible, horrible, evil person like the characters that he played in films and on television. Mr.Price was even a Gourmet Ched.
    And yet Ozzy is known as "The Prince of Darkness. Black Sabbath got their name from an old Boris Karloff film of the same name.
    Ozzy has stated on many occasions that he is a Christian. His first guitarist post Sabbath was the phenomenally talented Randy Rhoads, who is seen on this video..Randy was a really, really nice person who, unfortunately died in a plane crash in Florida on March 19, 1982. He was only 25.I was in the 9th grade at a brand new school. Got the news when I got home from school that day. For me, it was what I think Don McLean was feeling when he penned 'American Pie". But I digress.
    I play guitar, since my big brother got me one for my 8th birthday. But when I bought "Blizzard of Ozz" in either late 1980 early 1981,it was around Christmas, it changed changed my life. I became the kid in "Juke Box Hero", playing until my fingers were bleeding. Quite often I would fall asleep with my guitar. I bet that I spent the better part of 7 months learning "Crazy Train" Every guitar player has a hero, mine was Randy Rhoads. Most of the guys who played were into Jimmy Page, Angus Young, and of course, Edward Van Halen, but not me. I loved this little skinny white guys playing, it really spoke to me. Randy's Magnum Opus though, was "Diary of a Madman". To my ears, it's a billion+ out of 10. You should check that song out, for sure!!! I always wonder about those guitar heroes that were taken from us, far too early, where would their talent level be today. Before arthritis all but took my guitar away from me, I could play stuff from cats like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and of course, my own Patron Saint, Randy. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Randy Rhoads a year or two ago as a contributor, and when Ozzy was inducted as a solo performer, In Ozzy's acceptance speech, Ozzy took the time to thank Randy and his wife Sharon. I was quite moved on by his words about Randy, saying that without Randy Rhoads, he didn't think that his career path would have worked out. Come to think of it, I don't think that Ozzy even mentioned any other guitarist by name... and he has had at least 3 all-time great guitar heroes in his solo band?
    As for "Mr. Crowley", I don't think that the song is celebrating Alistair Crowley, I think that Ozzy is telling a cautionary tale of playing with things that you don't understand can possibly end tragically. The man Crowley, was a kook, and ultimately, a charlatan. Kinda like most of the satanic possession/exorcism films, don't mess with Ouija boards, etc.

  • @jim1771
    @jim1771 Місяць тому +4

    Ozzy didn't like Crowley in fact Ozzy is a devout Christian. The song came about because he came across an occult book and tarot card deck in studio. Crowley was a topic of discussion at the time. So he and the legendary Randy Rhodes wrote the song. Occult imagery was popular from the 1960's through the 1990's because of the popularity of Gothic imagery and stories like Conan the Barbarian. Want cool images Google Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, and Frank Frazetta who were popular artists of the time.
