I bought ED 10 years ago to play VR in a DK2. In 10 years nothing comes close. This IS the premiere VR experience. Agree on the mediative aspect, as I hang out mostly in rings doing mining.
Sure, there is no VR while on foot, but there is when switching to camera view. And also, there is turret view while in the rover, which is glorious in VR. Set it so you can drive while operating the turret. You will quickly forget about on foot once you start using it.
2:58 may be thrue, but imo at least you should be able to see a 3d image on that flat screen... Is that possible? (I'm thinking on buying Odyssey, despite I barely have time to play). But I totally agree that the VR experience on the ships and the rover is *fantastic*!
Bought Elite at release and have been playing with a gamepad since 2015. The support is amazing. It might seem unbelievable, but you can map any needed function to a gamepad, despite its limited number of buttons. It took me some time to get used to it in FPS shooters, but once you do, it’s much better nowadays to have one controller for both space and on-foot gameplay in Elite rather than constantly switching between HOTAS and KBD+M. I recently bought an HMD. I’m okay with the big flat screen, but full VR support, with the option to use VR controllers on foot, would be nice. P.S. NMS is not a space sim.
It isn't ideal...but is it worth giving up the parts of the game that are incredible in VR? Personally for me and it sounds like him...no. I wish it had VR there but for now ill take the flat screen if it means I can fly around space in what is still one of the best experiences in VR.
The only advantage of the big flat screen for the 'on foot' gameplay is that I tend to get motion sick when in walking mode. But I don't get sick flying the ship..
If your looking for a great space game in vr look at lone echo, it's a masterpiece, the story is fantastic me and my son both loved it, very different type of game to elite, which is why I got into vr in the first place and love elite in vr, the only thing I don't like is the flat screen when disembarked, they could at least make it 3d even in the flat plane in my opinion
the shaking you see in the video is simply the head of the player not being 100% stable and the video recording is not stabilized. Within the headset you will have a 100% stable image like in the real world.
I have to agree with your assessment about the profound feeling of solitude - nothing else compares. What sort of specs are good enough for 60-90fps on a quest 2? Hoping I don’t need to get a 3080 to play a game I played on 10 year old hardware at high quality… I had an old DK2 when the game first came out but no longer have a gaming PC.
elite should have never taken the first person on foot aproach. It should have had gameplay outside or ship but in space. Imagine something like getting out of your ship, in some sort of space suite, that you control with your hottas (just like a mini ship), where you need to explore other abandoned ships, their interiors, asteroid fields, caves inside asteroids, doing outside the ship but in space all sort of missions.
I agree with everything except one. Odyssey is actually not that good you say. I play Legacy because it works much better on my Gf 1080. In addition, I really don't like the flat screen in shooter mode and I don't use a mouse and keyboard, so I play Horizons, where you only need to have a HOTAS to control the ships. However, Elite is still the best space simulator. I agree with this. I play with X-56 HOTAS and Quest 2. I have 2000 hours in Horizons with VR mode and I don’t see any other alternatives to Elite.
Probably the closest i can think of is star citizen, which when you find a portion that complete seems awesome, but being still in alpha development isn't a fair comparison. Another is X4 Foundation which leans more into the space empire genre but has plenty of fun looking in cockpit combat. Still, if star citizen's dev would have quit adding feature to the base game, we could have had a worthy competitor to ED years ago.
2:27 I hate the gray frame in on-foot mode, if I'm on a VR headset, there is no reason to not have full 360 view of the world, this is an immersion killer for me, this is the main reason Odyssey failed in my opinion.
I miss eve valkyrie...that was my first space vr experience and man did it blow me away. I hated No man's sky because of the complicated mechanics..I'm more of an arcade gamer, does this have an arcade mode or at least a simcade feel?
i tried playing Elite Dangerous in VR several times, but everytime it was terrible. I like the massive scale of space and the realism, but the controls are terrible and having a flatscreen gameplay when you are on foot is just awful. This has been done so much better in No Man's Sky. Although not being perfect, the whole VR experience is just amazing. And yes, you can play NMS with VR controllers in seated mode.
I can't imagine that. I've read that you use the left twist axis for forward/reverse throttle. Yikes. I think a full range throttle for forward/reverse, along with a thumb mini-stick for left/right/up/down thrusters is much more natural.
It's not that bad actually, as the gameplay is a lot of fun straight away. The annoying part is to set up the controls and keybindings for the own preference, that's quite some work as I don't like the default settings.
I would’ve much rather had VR motion controls, it’s difficult to use keyboard and mouse when I can’t see my fingers location on the keyboard. HOTAS is great for the ships because everything‘s at your fingertips, but I find Odyssey really clunky to use and the tutti projection is just awful, at least give me VR presence. The VR implementation in Odyssey was extremely lazy and I have NEVER felt so robbed as a lifetime pass holder for what was advertised as a fully VR game. Not having VR motion controls and actual 3D presence means it’s not really a VR expansion at all. It already takes like 10 seconds to load out of the ship anyways, they should’ve made this a transition period for those who want to switch to motion controls. Just make the ship not able to take damage during this time. VR motion controls could’ve been incredibly immersive for Odyssey and it would’ve had me playing like it was my second job like it used to in Horizons era.
I am a player with about 100 hrs in VR in Elite Dangerous. I can't say how does this game compare to other VR titles in space, but the performance is abysmal. I have an RTX 4090 and I am barely pulling 80 fps on an HP Reverb G2 with OpenXR/OpenComposite (open source software that optimizes the game for VR). On top of that, there is truly horrible aliasing (jagged edges) that I couldn't fix in any way for years now. You can see it on this video too (the flickering, textures popping in-out). The stuttering, flickering and aliasing make this a tiresome experience in VR. This guy really hypes it up, but please, temper your expectations if you're about to drop some solid $ on a VR set specifically for Elite Dangerous.
I don't agree with that. In ED I am most of the times, if not almost all, fully suited and seated in my rig. It would be almost impossible for me / taking a lot of time. to get out, get controllers etc.
@@OtaQ I don't think you understand my point. Elite Dangerous (ED) is almost like a flight sim. I have a Joystick mounted to my desk, along with a large throttle system. It would be very uncomfortable to stand up; I would have to remove my headset, safely move my chair, and ensure I have enough distance to avoid hitting my $1000 HOTAS setup with my controllers. Then, when returning to the spaceship, I'd have to take off my headset again, put my chair back, and strap myself in at the desk. No, I prefer to remain seated and play on a flat screen with a mouse and keyboard. if this was a shooter, it would have been another case. and than yes, standing would be my preferd way! But yeah, each their way I guess.

Common, the state of VR in Horizons is pathetic. That "big screen" is awful imho. Compared to the in the exellent space VR experience in the base game.
I can name a few. Stellaris VR, Endspace 2 VR, The Freelancer Remake in VR, X4 Foundations, I surely will not mention Star Citizen nor Starfield because both are really horrible space games and not even worth mentioning.
Why would anyone play Stellaris in VR? I'm skeptical that you even can? X4 is not officially supported for VR last I checked. You can make it work but performance is bad. Starfield is not VR supported at all.

Thanks for your honest comment. I do understand ED has its shortcomings, especially for gamers playing this game for years! But for me, as a very regular who just plays a few hours each time, there is no other game that can do exactly this in VR. I haven't seen it at least! Now I just need to hope my other takes on games will reel you back in! 😄

Is the image shaking in the headset the same as in video? There is a constant "vibration"

You know, your GF 1080 is 8 years at least by now. And it's still looking gorgeous on FHD. On 4K and 2x SS is pure spaceporn.

I've heard that instead of throttle and joystick, ED is better played with two joysticks. Can anyone comment on this?

It is absolutely better with two joysticks. I played on KB+M, Xbox Controller, HOTAS and HOSAS. HOSAS beats all easy.
