I’ve spent around 6000hrs in Elite, much of it in VR. The mile wide inch deep trope was out of date five years ago and is utterly meaningless now. This is a complex, dynamic galaxy, with a phenomenal amount of diversity to keep those of us with a little imagination busy for years. VR enhances this to an utterly mind blowing level. If you have even a passing interest in sci fi, astronomy, or a gritty, believable, 1000 years into the future possibility (plus aliens) then it’s a must. Stick with it for the first 20 or 30 hours and the rewards will come.
Elite is a gem of an VR game especially with HOTAS - Its absolutely insane. Yes it doesnt feature everything in VR (ground missions) but the space ship side of the game (What it was built upon, ground was added because player wanted it [And they failed]) is absolutely stunning in my opinion. Elite is and will always be my go to if I want space in VR. I hope X4 eventually gets a rework and maybe even VR addition - I tried X4 and was interested in it until I found out that its more of a Map based game if you want to make profit and there are no real missions.
What an awesome list of great games. I also agree that X Rebirth in VR is impressive when you get into it! the size of the space stations is immense. But Elite is on its own level in VR.
Great vid. I honestly hope this pulls Elite up a bit. The first time I fired up Elite on my big screen with headphones on was a memorable moment in my gaming history. The crackling sound of space with the sounds of engines/instruments blew me away. Stayed up all night. Glad it got more than a honorable mention.
Two I'll add: Arvoch Alliance (basically a combat-focused version of Evochron from the same developer, not sold on Steam), and X Wing Alliance with the XWAUP and VR mods. Personally SW Squadrons didn't work for me in VR; there are major bugs with the VR implementation in WMR headsets that EA never bothered to address.
Great list! Long time VR user so this is super useful! BTW, last month's results from a Japanese study on VR, said that 120Hz is the key to reducing motion sickness. Oh and the fan blowing cool air on your face trick has been my go to solution for avoiding motion sickness when flying in helicopters for years now.
Thank you for this list - there were even a couple I had never heard of - and I love VR in space! I have recently been playing From Other Suns which is close to FTL in VR (Not a sim, but very intense and you lose a lot) Also really enjoy Space Pirates and Zombies 2 - looks amazing (especially in VR) although it plays better on flat screen. And for a Quest Space sim - there is Vendetta Online - not the deepest or best, but you don't need a PC I would love if you did a more expansive list of VR Space games - I wonder what else I might find!
I really like battlegroup VR. Even though it is older, the voice commands, and Emerson really hooked me. Thanks for the heads up. Is there going to be more content or is this game shelved.
"From Other Suns" when Oculus made stuff for PC. The game has been left for dead by Meta and Gunfire Games but its one of my favorites. I still think it has the best player inventory system in VR that never caught on as the years passed and VR grew.
People keep saying "mile-wide and inch-deep" about Elite Dangerous. That perspective is absolutely baffling to me. People will sink thousands of hours into this game and then complain about it. Nothing abut this is shallow.
Yes, I can highly recommend Elite Dangerous, except for the 'space legs' section. Frontier REALY c*cked up that mode. They just took the pancake, sticked it in 'VR' and called it a day. A real shame. Also, don't use a controller or keyboard/mouse combo. I bought myself a Logitech X52 HOTAS and, although I know that isn't for everyone, The X52 looks exactly the same as the HOTAS in-game. So if you position it just right, it will line up with your arms. And as the animation is pretty much synced with the real buttons and direction you move the stick in, it REALY helps with the emersion!
I love space sims and have always wished I could enjoy VR, sadly I get so incredibly sick. I've tried a few times in some great beginner VR games but every time within a few minutes I've got a massive headache and feel like I'll get sick. Even watching VR games on PC is hard for me. For those getting hyped for Elite: Dangerous (like myself), beware! If you own the Odyssey version get ready for a very nasty surprise the moment you leave the ship. Oh yes, if you have expected No Man's Sky like an experience you'll be slapped over a face by how unfinished this game is in VR. Spolier - you ll revert back into 2D looking through an ugly gray box that will totally destroy any immersion you might have had before you exit your ship. Not only that, the lazy devs. have completely abandoned implementing full VR. So yeah, if you hated how shallow this game is, but somehow got allured by the VR cake, don't get surprised or don't exit the ship with your headset on. For me this an immediate uninstall. Not sure when the last time was you played Elite Dangerous - it has come a long way, so the mile wide / inch deep comments doesn’t hold true anymore. One thing about Elite in VR, on-foot gameplay is not supported, and the game projects a 2D image.
Elite Dangerous VR is amazing, most rewarding and dead game out there. with a flight stick and mastering a million keybindings for the flight and driving on planet mechanics. You will never look at gaming or take off your headset again. Its the only game in VR you can just play and play (and play again) that never gets old. Its really is sad the Frontieer Developers are oblivious they unintentionally created the immersion goat. In stead, decides to throw away manpower and money into failed early 2000s games no one wants to play.

You know you want too! ;) haha they defo are fun!
Stupid VR. Spent $1k on a headset. I was so excited. The motion sickness i receive is so bad that i become bed ridden with a massive migraine and nausea for days after 10 minutes of play. The first day i played for 45 minutes got so sick i called in for work and slept 19 hours straight.
Not sure when the last time was you played Elite Dangerous - it has come a long way, so the mile wide / inch deep comments doesn’t hold true anymore.
One thing about Elite in VR, on-foot gameplay is not supported, and the game projects a 2D image.
I played it all this week and it still feels that way a little compared to the others.
In stead, decides to throw away manpower and money into failed early 2000s games no one wants to play.
true.
Geez, ever heard about "Lone Echo" 1 and 2 ? Better than this "top 10" combined
I'm not sure you understand what a Space Sim is on PC ;) demonstrates a real lack of knowledge if you think this.
Do you even know what a Space Sim is?
