My best tip for these; if you need/want to do a raid in a particular system, say because you've got weekly assignments there or something, you can take on the protection combat missions. This way after finishing up you'll be left with a settlement devoid of most NPC's. All if your allied defenders aren't fortunate enough to survive. It takes a bit longer than going in guns blazing, but you can do it in almost every settled system.
One thing I do before starting my nefarious actions, find an outside info terminal and just make SURE the station is an Anarchy installation. Also, I am hearing the Non-Power Play system ground installations will have zero loot in them. I just visited three that had nothing anywhere. So you may need an additional filter in Inara.
Also, if your fps drops hard on the ground, go to 0.5 supersampling ( test 0.65, 0.75 etc.) Turn alot of things on lowest settings. Turn head bob scale close to off or as good as off
Great video, with a lot of great points! I know a lot of people shy away from settlement raiding, but this video should really be helpful. As far as suit engineering goes, Night Vision is an absolute must, as even settlements on the daylight side have dark corridors on the inside when the lights are off. Extra Backpack Capacity is also good for raiding, although less important since a recent update already doubled the Maverick suit's base capacity. If you already take on a lot of guards, Extra Ammo Capacity isn't a bad choice either, especially in settlements that have hard to locate ammo crates. I like to be prioritize being stealthy until the alarms are off, so my Maverick suit also has Quiet Footsteps and Increased Sprint. Both of my weapons have both of the sound reduction mods on, so if I need to kill someone without being detected, it's usually pretty easy. You just need to kill them before they shoot, since their weapons won't be silenced in any way.
If you don't find something ( ex: the allarms consolle) or struggle to locate it, use one of the computer access points scattered through the settlement. Go through the list, you may need to use an Ebreacher or clone someone's access rights to see everything, but once done you can place a marker on the specific data port or power related container ( for power play ) .
Loads of good stuff in there and whilst I pretty much do it anyway in terms of keeping my distance I didn't know about the red ring - maybe now I can do stuff just a little bit quicker. Couple of tips ... you did it all the time in the video but didn't call it out ... reload every chance you get. Also, if you are targetted for a scan and are wanted or carrying something dodgy, but you're not ready to go all Chuck Norris yet ... pull a weapon just before the NPC scans you. You will be told to put it away (please do so) but you will then NOT be scanned. You can however only do this once per visit to a settlement.
If you get a high enough clearance profile cloned you can use a terminal to find the alarm panel and pin it to your HUD so you don't have to look for them.
Standing on any raised surface that NPCs cannot reach means they won't scan you so its cool to use the comntainers and awnings to move around. Rooftops sometimes have stairs up to them so you can be stopped and scanned on the rooftops. Hack terminals to find where alarms are located, you can also hack the alarms if you like. One weapon to have audio masking and one to have noise reduction allows you to stealth kill your way around the base. You can also use overcharge tool to silent kill but obviously needs to be very close range. If you are stopped for scan and you don't want to lose your secrurity level take your gun out and put it away quickly. This will override the scan and the NPC will leave you alone. Risky if you don't do it smoothly.
thx for thatvideo dude , i was trying to run every time when the npcs are scaning me, panicking, and ending dead! now i know that i can just stay and wayt.
SRV Scorpion attack with full shields from the outside, every time. You can get rid of all the shielded NPC's by running over them before you ever have to engage anyone on foot. I haven't found a security level where this technique doesn't work.
@cmdr_sludgehammer I have been doing the salvage missions using this tactic. I also have dumbfire missiles that I finally got to use today against ground targets that were already at the site.
Thanks for this. How about quick ways to get the initial materials for your first G5 upgrades and ground engineer content? Everything I have seen on those is pretty dated.
Missions. Even simple delivery missions give mats now. Even then you can use simple pre engineered (level 2 or 3) to comp stomp AI but it isn't as fast as with G5 gear. I've had EDO since pre order and I finally last week decided to upgrade my gear, I had just been selling the stuff I looted for extra cash since even hard ground combat zones were fairly simple with standard gear so long as they were played correctly.
I very timeous video. I have never tried infiltrating settlements. However i have a Power play II mission that i obtain 9 units of Classified data from Ndria and deliver it to the local Power Contact. Classified data for this task can be collected from Ndria. Downloaded data should then be delivered to a Power contact within Ndria. Be careful that you are not identified by security forces in the area.Tried three times. First time my ship was attacked and i had to fly away. Next two times i was detected and killed. Ended up in some sort of prison. But i have no clue how to do this mission. Could you please help? The settlement i chose was agricultural. The faction was hostile to mine.
Power restoration missions, while less materials, require no sneaking or generally any trouble, but you can still find decent amount of materials doing, bonus merits if you do them inside territory controlled by your power play pledgee.
I have a 4090, but my ping drops to like 60 during ground combat -- it's like 150 everywhere else (I get there are less polygons in space). Is that... normal?
In my experience, the fastest way to level up Mercenary rank has been medium or high ground combat zones. I made it from Rookie to Gunslinger and halfway to Warrior in two weeks, and only playing on weekends.
I've been having this issue, all the setlements in the las few days that I've visited, with and without a mission assigned, have no loot at all. Edit: I haven't pledged to any faction, superpower or whatever it is called.

New to the game, I've seen quite a few of your videos, thank you for all of this information. Your videos are enjoyable to watch. now why would a settlement worker try to shoot me, why can't they just run and hide like in fallout because I don't want to kill people who are just trying to make an honest living. why do these companies provide them with guns, it's silly.
