@Zain844 Some of MMA fighters doesn't, but they are the best fighters in the world, not best pozers or splitters. Belt show how you master some art, not how good you are. If you can do all the kicks, punches or grabs in that style you take the belt, it does not matter if you can fight or not.
He is 100% correct where "none of that stuff will work". However, training provides increased strength and more importantly, increased speed due to 'muscle memory'. These in turn increase your confidence. As someone once said, "Fear is the mind recognizing the vulnerability of the body".
Martial arts is just training your muscle memory to react in a certain way that way it will be easier to defend yourself. Along the way u learn how fragile the human body is and how easy it is to take a life. This is supposed to help u appreciate life, avoid conflict and look at others as your equal.

@@relaxationandblossom A real street fight is pure chaos and all technique goes out the window. Those kinds of fights only end when someone gets really hurt or worse. I carry a lot of scars and chronic injuries on me as a result. If you have a choice it is best to avoid fighting every single time. I chose the wrong path in life, mistakenly thinking that being a bad ass was the way to go. If I could do it all over again I would have gone through college, got a high-paid career going, and built a new house. Doing those kinds of things would have attracted a top quality woman instead of the loser whores I got with. Today I am an old broken down ex-warrior and living in an old broken down house with only my cat for companionship. Honestly, making a lot of money is the greatest power you can ever have and will solve 99% of life's problems. I learned too late that the real badasses are the pencil-neck rich guys because they have everything I don't have including their health, the beautiful woman, the nice home, and can afford anything else they want. Don't make my mistakes and end up like me.

Spot on. As a 40 plus years practitioner. I have had many street fights and not one of them has left their hand out for me to block, or thrown just one punch. It is a barrage of whatever. Mindset, is key. The training is key, but the streets are not the Dojo. Great clip, Michael. Thank you.

CaneFu I can’t speak for that guy because I don’t know his life story but a lot of guys fight over perceived “disrespect” and that’s the problem. Now on the other hand, if someone’s actually threatening your life or gets physical, that’s different. But we all know at least one guy who gets in fights because of his own ego and pride.
This hit hard! I'm not afraid to stand up for myself or my loved ones or if I feel someone needs someone to step in because they need protecting. But I am absolutely terrified of the fact that I understand that 'switch', that moment where it's on... That moment of life or death, the decision to react with lethality. I'm not a big man, hard man, I'm not an expert in fighting, hell, fighting scares me! But I do have an awareness of what my martial arts training has given me and I have been in situations where people have just backed the F off.... And I believe it's because of my mental attitude. That 'cross the line' look I have gained over the years... I'm very grateful for martial arts for teaching me the discipline to NOT react! I've won more fights by not fighting because of martial arts. I haven't had an actual fight in 7 years. And I'm very fucking proud of that 💕

This is very true. A real fight is nothing like that staged or choreographed looking pretty stuff they show us. It's ugly, dirty and violent. And people can die. Real talk.
I have this romanticized idea of fighting that i guess isnt true. I haven't been in alot of "street fights" i either one punch someone or use ju jutsu to choke them out. I guess i have been lucky not to be in that situation cuz it seems so fast and violent i wonder if any of my training of kickboxing,mma,wing chung would work against a 210 lb dude trying to take my head off.
Shane Mack I think your training would help you it’s just that reality is such a crapshoot that if you guess wrong on what somebody’s doing with their hands or feet or don’t protect or move at the right moment you’re going to get knocked out no matter how well-trained you are. You’ve certainly increased your chances but there’s no certainty that you won’t get killed if you know somebody unexpectedly pulls a knife or connects with one right blow.

I got into an altercation last week at work were a guy came at me swinging wildly and and punching in anger, and by keeping a calm state of mind and not getting into a panic fight I was able too diffuse the situation in about 12 seconds by slipping his punches and submitting him with a guillotine choke, it was a perfect example of keeping in the right mindset and fighting smarter not reckless
I had to learn this, too. On the street there is no warmup, no instructor, no timer, there is eventually not enough space for trained tricks, there is no friendly attacker, there is just a fist or a knife hitting you and so it's getting started. So, it's true, the best you can do is mental stability. So you can see the attack coming or better, you have the ability to calm down the situation before it's too late.
I have a good trick,too. I always train what i hate the most to train. So, when i hate pushups i train pushups every day, until i can do it and don't hate pushups any more. But than i train another thing i hate. So the mind always keeps on fighting and never becomes lazy. Because i was at a point when training becomes boring and than i understood , i had to do more than just to train. I have to train my mind ,too. And this works at its best when you train what you hate the most. This is one of my best experiences ever in fighting arts.
Based on a couple of street fights I had in my life. This is the most valuable piece of advice I seen on fighting period. As the saying goes . It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
Sparring also helps with self defense too in the sense that it keeps you from feeling invincible and puts enough realism into you to make you realize that you need to adapt and adjust to your opponent if you are to come out on top.
I agree. Mindset is everything. It determines your success as a fighter. It determines how you learn, train, and apply your art. Whether it's only one, or many. It also determines your martial arts philosophy. I've trained in different arts in the military, and civilian world. I've trained in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's original), Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Jujitsu, Brazilian Jujitsu, Sambo, Eskrima, MACP (Modern Army Combatives Program), and SOCP (Special Operations Combatives Program). I'm a student of many, master of none. Master of my mind and body. I've created my own mindset and philosophy. I only train for combat, life or death. If I fight, it's because the attacker or attackers are trying to end me, so I end them first, with any weapon, no hesitation. I take what is natural and learned quickly. Techniques that are learned quickly, are efficient, are of natural movement, and create the most damage. Then I focus on manking the techniques more powerful, faster, and focused on vitals. While applying the basic combat principles, physical balance, mental balance, position, timing, distance, momentum, leverage, and vital targets. The striking principles, attitude, fluid shock wave, and target selection. I take all of this and apply my three most important principles for combat. The three S's, Strike Fast, Strike Hard, and Strike Vitals.
I didn't do as much as you but I went through a lot of different forms and settled with Ketsugo Jujitsu for about 10 years. Stopped practicing back in 2007, or so, but still think a combination of Jujitsu and Muai Thai is the most effective / rounded form of fighting. Covers both striking and grappling. My grappling is far better than my striking so that's what I'd go for in a fight but, thankfully, no one wants to fight and I don't live in a bad area. Besides, I'm kind of lazy and would rather pepper spray someone than tussle with them. Since I stopped going to bars and clubs the chances of me being in a violent incident went to almost zero.

This is so true and ive experienced it in our kung-fu class. As soon as some students attack "wrong" the defender is not prepared and they have no idea how to do the defensive technique. Luckily our trainer have started letting us attack like normal instead of these choreographed moves and also plays with it, let the attacker try to fool the defender. But i know so many martial arts schools that never practice this, they just rely on choreographed moves.
I was fortunate to have an extremely unique experience in learning aikido. My sensei trained in Japan, on an army base. As you might imagine, his style was worlds apart from what you commonly see in American schools where it's all spirituality and pacifism. I teach aikido and kyushojitsu now, and I have expanded on my sensei's teaching style, which includes things like "free sparring" at the end of every class and experimentation with techniques. Most techniques can be made much more practical and direct, but like I said above, the "techniques" in the codex of any martial art are just teaching tools anyway.
Yu Tu yea i bet you want to lose an eye, or your balls.. have you seen Ferguson vs pettis? Furguson has not sparred for 5 years. you only need 5 to 10 years of fight experience before sparring has severe opportunity cost, and diminishing returns. not to mention the fact that eyes throat and balls should be the primary targets.
Because kung fu is total crap...that's why. A wrestler with a year of training will kill a lifetime Kung Fu practitioner....1000% of the time. Hell, even Bruce Lee himself said someone that knows a little bit of boxing and a little bit of wrestling could beat the shit out of pretty much most eastern martial arts.

You have to know when to turn the Killer Instinct button on. Also when to get out of there too. Retreating is a big one too. Fighting is the lowest form of communication. You have to act like an Animal if necessary. Look at Animals fighting they don't think or care about hand positioning, stance, kicks. They just go by feeling target anything that will stop a person from trying to harm them. Cat's fighting in alley is crazy.
Well, I don't know if you have any Martial Arts Training, or Have you read The Art of War, or Talk to any person in the Armed Service. My father was a Veteran in the Vietnam War. He was also a Air Born Ranger. There was many family members of the Military. They all told me similar statements of MJW. As for me I triained in Boxing, TKD, Thai Boxing, some JKD. I'm just saying.
I seen Cats fight in the Alley two Cats fighting one. The Cat put is Paw up to distract the other Cat he did some type of hand faint. Waited for him to get close and Sweated him. The other Cat was like oh, no! The Cat attracting had is back hunch up and jump on the second Cat back. Like some rear necked choke hold and bit the second Cats neck. Clawed him up bad hair was missing. I was like damm, got out of that alley fast.

The main thing I have always realized about fighting is maintaining distance is the only true way to evade attacks and buy time to react to the attacks... Be the king of maintaining distance, stay at a distance and direction using constant footwork that will make it hard for your opponent to reach you, and you will capitalise on that, and buy yourself time to counter. Only close the distance, JUST ENOUGH for your hit to be optimally powerful and devastating to your opponent, get your punching technique and punching speed up, speed is everything in striking, how fast can you pull that perfect technique will determine how powerful your strike is. Footwork and timing are number one things, once you have those down, and your stance is right, you will be able to hit without getting hit. *FIRST YOUR PUNCH CONNECTS AND THEN YOUR HEAD AND REST OF THE BODY GETS CLOSE TO YOUR OPPONENT FOR A TRADE TO HAPPEN* THAT is the primary thing to keep in mind as a BRAND NEW BEGINNER to fighting.

There´s a self defense dude in YT that has a very realistic approach on street fights, his name is Nick Drossos, and he precisely bashes the 1, 2, 3 system saying street aggressions and aversive situations don´t happen in slow motion like some "instructors" want naive people to believe, guy is legit, his channel was great a few years ago when he just talked about self defense and fights, now he is adding some new stuff to get some views, like men´s health and other things I don´t believe the channel needed, but it´s his channel after all. Dunno if you have seen some of his material. Anyways greetings from France, Mr White you´re one of my all time idols.
It's already been said here, but MJW is, for his raw talent, still hugely underrated. Blood and Bone is a gem, and one of my all time favorite movies. I wish they'd put it out on Blu-ray in north America (hint hint). Another valid question asked below: How can the average person trigger this mindset? Michael is a natural in a lot of aspects of this- mindset, physique, ability. Most wouldn't fight him just looking at him. The majority of us aren't born with it, and unless you're in a war zone, it's hard to develop it. If you ARE born in a war zone, it seems, unfortunately, that it's hard to turn off. No easy answers. MJW on point with great advice as always. I have met people over the years who were amazing in the dojo or in the ring, but have told me stories of them getting a kicking on the street because they misread the situation, froze, or simply didn't know what to do.

I just love this somebody who is not afraid to tell it as it is you sound like my instructor (you don't have to use your hands all the time, if you see something which makes as a weapon use it to save your life}, and that's when I was 9 years old.

Thank you for that. My military/martial arts trained friend switched to that mindset very quickly when he and a friend were attacked by 5 to 7 dudes in Manhattan. He took them all out by spraying their eyes and hitting their legs/ankles/etc! I was like WOW! He is in his early 60s.

Its always mind over matter. The moment you start clouding your mind with negative thoughts and fears about your opponent being bigger/faster/stronger than you then you've already lost. Fear will control you, it will impede your movements and make you constantly second guess yourself and you dont want to be 'fighting' with your own mind at the same time as your actual opponent. You have to stay focussed and keep looking for openings where you can attack. If you were afraid of your opponent, then why the hell you start a fight with him in the first place?
This is the first time I have ever agreed with MJW! I have been saying this for years!! belts technique grappling all that stuff is fine at the gym. In real life the fight is about 2 or 3 minutes you best prepare for that. An ugly sloppy fight that can get you killed. Remember if you are ever in that situation 1st try to get away or create space 2nd try and put your back against something solid 3rd remember everything around you is a weapon. practical strikes for street fighting hooks uppercuts hammer fist elbows. front and side kicks are great aim for the stomach to fold them in half and its safer for you not kicking so high learn a good hip toss and you should be good. a hip toss allows you to throw someone two times your size. Great job MJW this is the kind of fight talk I like!!!

One of the first things I learned at my UFC gym was that the punching bag does not hit back but your instructors will make your internal organs turn into mashed potatoes! I'm very thankful that my instructors always taught the females that they do in fact need to think about being in a life or death situation. I have had to use what I have been taught twice. Both times it was less about the perfect technique and more about doing whatever I had to do to disarm/defuse the situation. The helpless damsel bull goes out the window and the crazy blood thirsty lunatic enters center stage! 😂😂🤣 People need to understand that there are people out there that have absolutely no regards for life in itself and those same people often have nothing to lose. If someone is trying to rob, harm or kill you, they are already half past crazy!!! As far as I'm concerned, the techniques I have learned are for the ring, but the will to survive is for the streets!!! Great vid guys. 👊👊👏👏
Truth spoken brotha! growing up in the mean streets of Chicago, I always had the mindset of not having anything to lose and I'm willing to engage in war in any situation but, I also focus on how I can always avoid having to be violent on and off the streets.
Yeah, I saw a video of a guy with 2 kitchen knives against 5+ guys. They had no idea what to do, he stabbed one guy dozens of times, I think he just kept stabbing people.
A friend of mine is a retired Marine who lives in a rough neighborhood . He ran 3 guys off his yard with a bayonet in 1 hand and a machete in the other without hitting / cutting anyone . They KNEW he meant business .
I totally agree with him on the whole flashy thing but i also think that these flashy moves have something useful maybe not in the flashy way but they surely can be applied its all about the practicioner

Any advice on triggering this mental focus and controlling it on and off ? Fighting for ones life, or the adrenaline fear rushing but still must have high fight i.q. and control the emotion.
I do this, but only with advanced students or trusted friends because I don't want to get sued or go to jail! There's basically two ways I know of to trigger that instinct in a relatively controlled environment. 1 which is less effective but more controlled is to bring the heart rate up to the target range (Google the formula for this if you don't know about it) then do some "free sparring" as I call it with active resistance and no scripts. The 2nd is just to go old school randori like we did when I was learning aikido, which is more like what I think they call a "bull ring" in kajukenbo. Basically, have some classmates jump you and just stop before it gets out of hand. It's dangerous, but it's the most effective thing short of going out into the world and getting into real fights.
All facts, fight every fight like your life is on the line no matter what and you reflexes will be amazing. Never have the mindset like it's just an ordinary fight
Technique is skill you tool. “Technique is only useful when the moment makes itself available” technique can be used quickly in a street fight as well, don’t be giving younger guys anymore advice.

There is not too many people that have a good mindset like you do. I have watched many people fight and only a token few guys I respect is Bruce Lee because his mindset is clear, pure and is like water as he said so many times. He put so much time into the mental side of martial arts as you do and that is awesome. I have admired your work for many years. Thank you for pointing out the importance of where your mind goes, your energy flows. When I watch UFC fights, I can see professional fighters get pumped up in the back room or for weeks before the fight, but they allow anger, resentment or revenge into their fight plan all of a sudden and they lose. For example, when Anderson Silva was teased about how he has no fighting skills my Chael Sonnen or how his country was weak and how he made fun of Anderson's wife just to get inside his head. If you watch Anderson he looks up, feels up and takes deep breaths. Watching Anderson SIlva focus on the task at hand and not allowing the words of another man outside the Octagon before the fight to get under his skin and allow his words to affect his performance inside the Octagon would be normal. I have been up against with five brothas before, back when I was younger, and I still remember how it all went down! K. O. Knock down and give. Half his face broken, didn't find out til late, the other gave up and the last pick a brick up and so did I and ran after him. It is mindset. Attitude and KNOWING! I am not the best fighter in my family, although I Know when it's time to Take Life Serious. And those brothas found out the hard way and the prosecutor was mad as fuq with the video! I totally agree, your mindset and mental state in a combat situation is very important. In a combat situation you have to be ferocious. If a person is set on robbing you or whatever you have got to be vicious in your mindset and fight with that same mentality like your life depends on it because it does.
I never went into martial arts training. I grew up as the short, skinny kid with a bad attitude, and nothing to back it up. In other words, I got my ass kicked damn near everyday til I was 11 or 12. I honestly wouldnt take it back for the world. That toughened me up in ways alot of people would never reach. It greatly sharpened my mind as well. It sucks to go through, but in hindsight, its what helped me survive in later years. The only true way out, is through.

I truly wish I could train under this guy. He seems to know his stuff. Unfortunately, training with him is nearly impossible. It would be great for my health and also self defense. The way people are nowadays, you need some way to defend yourself. Shouldn't have to, but that's the world we live in, unfortunately. I wish there were more dojo close to me so I could be able to learn. For one, to build self confidence. Mr. Jai White, you truly a great sensei, from what I've seen in your videos and interviews. You don't seem to walk around like a badass, which I have seen some do when they learn a discipline. A true role model. Besides, how can anyone be a true leader unless they should the rest of us that it can be done. Keep it up sir. Great video Michael. Here’s another topic you should do a video on. I’m seeing more and more videos showing women fighting men and the idea that when the man gases out the woman is in control. You’re so right that the attacker knows what they’re doing and is at least a couple steps ahead of you. You have no clue that the attacker targeted you while they’re calculating their every move. So even if you’re a trained female athlete that’s been doing one form or another of martial arts, I wouldn’t plan on using those skills as defense unless you have no other choice. You should try to avoid the confrontation if you can as a first strategy. The Gracie brother’s (Rener and Ryron) showed a film of a male black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu being confrontational as part of road range and being shot to death. The black belt was beating the guy up until he pulled out a gun and shot him to death. Trained women fighting untrained men and NOT emphasizing the importance of avoiding a confrontation if you can sends the wrong message.

This is so true. People practicing any kind of martial art think that technique is far more important than the mindset...FALSE! Technique is useless unless you have what it takes to apply it. To be hones, I personally think that mindset is the key to everything you do in your life, self defense makes no exception. All people of great accomplishments are different from the ones that never achieve anything exactly by this mental toughness, analyzing the situation they are in and identifying the best course of action they need to take to get out with it, and when someone is threatening your life, it is a do or die situation, it's your life or his, there's no second guessing. Watch Bruce Lee, or read about Miyamoto Musashi, two of the greatest fighters in the world that ever walked in Earth, (each in its own time) and you will instantly notice their stoic, absolute focused mind. When the situation calls for it, they will only look in your eyes and they almost materialize their bloodlust, in that moment of crisis they sweat confidence so much that they won the fight before it even started by demoralizing you with their dominant presence. MJW, I have nothing but deep respect for you as a fighter, as an actor, and as a true man of action. I wish people would realize the importance of your words and insights, instead of fooling themselves with bad content and frauds that claim to know it all about martial arts here on youtube just for the sake of their wallet... . You being so underrated only makes me realize how much people love to fool themselves with fairy tales just to comfort their ego or look cool in front of their girlfriend or peers, instead of accepting the truth...in real life situation it's their funeral anyway...

The more i develop myself the more I read that mindset and belief is everything. Belief in yourself, mindset that you are it. That is the most crucial determining factor, everything else follows... If only I knew that as a child.. Used to be an introvert, shy, friendless, gamer and preferred to stay in my comfort zone because no one told me otherwise... Note, you MUST leave the comfort zone, it WILL kill you.

@Zain844 Some of MMA fighters doesn't, but they are the best fighters in the world, not best pozers or splitters. Belt show how you master some art, not how good you are. If you can do all the kicks, punches or grabs in that style you take the belt, it does not matter if you can fight or not.

He is 100% correct where "none of that stuff will work". However, training provides increased strength and more importantly, increased speed due to 'muscle memory'. These in turn increase your confidence. As someone once said, "Fear is the mind recognizing the vulnerability of the body".
Depends on who you learn from.
Martial arts is just training your muscle memory to react in a certain way that way it will be easier to defend yourself. Along the way u learn how fragile the human body is and how easy it is to take a life. This is supposed to help u appreciate life, avoid conflict and look at others as your equal.

@@relaxationandblossom A real street fight is pure chaos and all technique goes out the window. Those kinds of fights only end when someone gets really hurt or worse. I carry a lot of scars and chronic injuries on me as a result. If you have a choice it is best to avoid fighting every single time. I chose the wrong path in life, mistakenly thinking that being a bad ass was the way to go. If I could do it all over again I would have gone through college, got a high-paid career going, and built a new house. Doing those kinds of things would have attracted a top quality woman instead of the loser whores I got with. Today I am an old broken down ex-warrior and living in an old broken down house with only my cat for companionship. Honestly, making a lot of money is the greatest power you can ever have and will solve 99% of life's problems. I learned too late that the real badasses are the pencil-neck rich guys because they have everything I don't have including their health, the beautiful woman, the nice home, and can afford anything else they want. Don't make my mistakes and end up like me.

CaneFu I can’t speak for that guy because I don’t know his life story but a lot of guys fight over perceived “disrespect” and that’s the problem. If you’re going to shove somebody or get in their face because they call you a piece of shit then the problem is still with your own self control, even if they are in fact being a jackass to you. Now on the other hand, if someone’s actually threatening your life or gets physical, that’s different. But we all know at least one guy who gets in fights because of his own ego and pride.
Is anger useful in a fight?
This hit hard! I'm not afraid to stand up for myself or my loved ones or if I feel someone needs someone to step in because they need protecting.
But I am absolutely terrified of the fact that I understand that 'switch', that moment where it's on... That moment of life or death, the decision to react with lethality.
I'm not a big man, hard man, I'm not an expert in fighting, hell, fighting scares me! But I do have an awareness of what my martial arts training has given me and I have been in situations where people have just backed the F off.... And I believe it's because of my mental attitude. That 'cross the line' look I have gained over the years... I'm very grateful for martial arts for teaching me the discipline to NOT react!
I've won more fights by not fighting because of martial arts.
I haven't had an actual fight in 7 years. And I'm very fucking proud of that 💕

This is very true. A real fight is nothing like that staged or choreographed looking pretty stuff they show us. It's ugly, dirty and violent. And people can die. Real talk.
I have this romanticized idea of fighting that i guess isnt true. I haven't been in alot of "street fights" i either one punch someone or use ju jutsu to choke them out. I guess i have been lucky not to be in that situation cuz it seems so fast and violent i wonder if any of my training of kickboxing,mma,wing chung would work against a 210 lb dude trying to take my head off.
Shane Mack I think your training would help you it’s just that reality is such a crapshoot that if you guess wrong on what somebody’s doing with their hands or feet or don’t protect or move at the right moment you’re going to get knocked out no matter how well-trained you are. You’ve certainly increased your chances but there’s no certainty that you won’t get killed if you know somebody unexpectedly pulls a knife or connects with one right blow.

I got into an altercation last week at work were a guy came at me swinging wildly and and punching in anger, and by keeping a calm state of mind and not getting into a panic fight I was able too diffuse the situation in about 12 seconds by slipping his punches and submitting him with a guillotine choke, it was a perfect example of keeping in the right mindset and fighting smarter not reckless
This by itself IS a self defence lesson.
I had to learn this, too. On the street there is no warmup, no instructor, no timer, there is eventually not enough space for trained tricks, there is no friendly attacker, there is just a fist or a knife hitting you and so it's getting started.
So, it's true, the best you can do is mental stability. So you can see the attack coming or better, you have the ability to calm down the situation before it's too late.

I have a good trick,too.
I always train what i hate the most to train.
So, when i hate pushups i train pushups every day, until i can do it and don't hate pushups any more. But than i train another thing i hate.
So the mind always keeps on fighting and never becomes lazy.
Because i was at a point when training becomes boring and than i understood , i had to do more than just to train. I have to train my mind ,too. And this works at its best when you train what you hate the most. This is one of my best experiences ever in fighting arts.
Based on a couple of street fights I had in my life. This is the most valuable piece of advice I seen on fighting period. As the saying goes . It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
Sparring also helps with self defense too in the sense that it keeps you from feeling invincible and puts enough realism into you to make you realize that you need to adapt and adjust to your opponent if you are to come out on top.

I agree. Mindset is everything. It determines your success as a fighter. It determines how you learn, train, and apply your art. Whether it's only one, or many. It also determines your martial arts philosophy. I've trained in different arts in the military, and civilian world. I've trained in Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's original), Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Jujitsu, Brazilian Jujitsu, Sambo, Eskrima, MACP (Modern Army Combatives Program), and SOCP (Special Operations Combatives Program). I'm a student of many, master of none. Master of my mind and body. I've created my own mindset and philosophy. I only train for combat, life or death. If I fight, it's because the attacker or attackers are trying to end me, so I end them first, with any weapon, no hesitation. I take what is natural and learned quickly. Techniques that are learned quickly, are efficient, are of natural movement, and create the most damage. Then I focus on manking the techniques more powerful, faster, and focused on vitals. While applying the basic combat principles, physical balance, mental balance, position, timing, distance, momentum, leverage, and vital targets. The striking principles, attitude, fluid shock wave, and target selection. I take all of this and apply my three most important principles for combat. The three S's, Strike Fast, Strike Hard, and Strike Vitals.

I didn't do as much as you but I went through a lot of different forms and settled with Ketsugo Jujitsu for about 10 years. Stopped practicing back in 2007, or so, but still think a combination of Jujitsu and Muai Thai is the most effective / rounded form of fighting. Covers both striking and grappling. My grappling is far better than my striking so that's what I'd go for in a fight but, thankfully, no one wants to fight and I don't live in a bad area. Besides, I'm kind of lazy and would rather pepper spray someone than tussle with them. Since I stopped going to bars and clubs the chances of me being in a violent incident went to almost zero.

This is so true and ive experienced it in our kung-fu class. As soon as some students attack "wrong" the defender is not prepared and they have no idea how to do the defensive technique. Luckily our trainer have started letting us attack like normal instead of these choreographed moves and also plays with it, let the attacker try to fool the defender. But i know so many martial arts schools that never practice this, they just rely on choreographed moves.
This is ABSOLUTELY true. Ive even experienced Sifu's do this. Instead of just reacting, there is a pre-programmed defense waiting to be displayed.
I was fortunate to have an extremely unique experience in learning aikido. My sensei trained in Japan, on an army base. As you might imagine, his style was worlds apart from what you commonly see in American schools where it's all spirituality and pacifism.
I teach aikido and kyushojitsu now, and I have expanded on my sensei's teaching style, which includes things like "free sparring" at the end of every class and experimentation with techniques. Most techniques can be made much more practical and direct, but like I said above, the "techniques" in the codex of any martial art are just teaching tools anyway.

You have to act like an Animal if necessary. Look at Animals fighting they don't think or care about hand positioning, stance, kicks. The main thing I have always realized about fighting is maintaining distance is the only true way to evade attacks and buy time to react to the attacks...
Be the king of maintaining distance, stay at a distance and direction using constant footwork that will make it hard for your opponent to reach you, and you will capitalise on that, and buy yourself time to counter.
Only close the distance, JUST ENOUGH for your hit to be optimally powerful and devastating to your opponent, get your punching technique and punching speed up, speed is everything in striking, how fast can you pull that perfect technique will determine how powerful your strike is.
Footwork and timing are number one things, once you have those down, and your stance is right, you will be able to hit without getting hit.
*FIRST YOUR PUNCH CONNECTS AND THEN YOUR HEAD AND REST OF THE BODY GETS CLOSE TO YOUR OPPONENT FOR A TRADE TO HAPPEN*
THAT is the primary thing to keep in mind as a BRAND NEW BEGINNER to fighting.

There´s a self defense dude in YT that has a very realistic approach on street fights, his name is Nick Drossos, and he precisely bashes the 1, 2, 3 system saying street aggressions and aversive situations don´t happen in slow motion like some "instructors" want naive people to believe, guy is legit, his channel was great a few years ago when he just talked about self defense and fights, now he is adding some new stuff to get some views, like men´s health and other things I don´t believe the channel needed, but it´s his channel after all. Dunno if you have seen some of his material. Anyways greetings from France, Mr White you´re one of my all time idols.

It's already been said here, but MJW is, for his raw talent, still hugely underrated. Blood and Bone is a gem, and one of my all time favorite movies. I wish they'd put it out on Blu-ray in north America (hint hint). Another valid question asked below: How can the average person trigger this mindset? Michael is a natural in a lot of aspects of this- mindset, physique, ability. Most wouldn't fight him just looking at him. The majority of us aren't born with it, and unless you're in a war zone, it's hard to develop it. If you ARE born in a war zone, it seems, unfortunately, that it's hard to turn off. No easy answers. Thank you for that. My military/martial arts trained friend switched to that mindset very quickly when he and a friend were attacked by 5 to 7 dudes in Manhattan. He took them all out by spraying their eyes and hitting their legs/ankles/etc! I was like WOW! He is in his early 60s.

Its always mind over matter. The moment you start clouding your mind with negative thoughts and fears about your opponent being bigger/faster/stronger than you then you've already lost. Fear will control you, it will impede your movements and make you constantly second guess yourself and you dont want to be 'fighting' with your own mind at the same time as your actual opponent. You have to stay focussed and keep looking for openings where you can attack.
If you were afraid of your opponent, then why the hell you start a fight with him in the first place?

This is the first time I have ever agreed with MJW! I have been saying this for years!! belts technique grappling all that stuff is fine at the gym. In real life the fight is about 2 or 3 minutes you best prepare for that. An ugly sloppy fight that can get you killed. Remember if you are ever in that situation 1st try to get away or create space 2nd try and put your back against something solid 3rd remember everything around you is a weapon. practical strikes for street fighting hooks uppercuts hammer fist elbows. front and side kicks are great aim for the stomach to fold them in half and its safer for you not kicking so high learn a good hip toss and you should be good. a hip toss allows you to throw someone two times your size. Great job MJW this is the kind of fight talk I like!!!

One of the first things I learned at my UFC gym was that the punching bag does not hit back but your instructors will make your internal organs turn into mashed potatoes!
I'm very thankful that my instructors always taught the females that they do in fact need to think about being in a life or death situation.
I have had to use what I have been taught twice. Both times it was less about the perfect technique and more about doing whatever I had to do to disarm/defuse the situation.

Yeah, I saw a video of a guy with 2 kitchen knives against 5+ guys. They had no idea what to do, he stabbed one guy dozens of times, I think he just kept stabbing people.
A friend of mine is a retired Marine who lives in a rough neighborhood . He ran 3 guys off his yard with a bayonet in 1 hand and a machete in the other without hitting / cutting anyone . They KNEW he meant business .

Any advice on triggering this mental focus and controlling it on and off ? Fighting for ones life, or the adrenaline fear rushing but still must have high fight i.q. and control the emotion.
I do this, but only with advanced students or trusted friends because I don't want to get sued or go to jail!
There's basically two ways I know of to trigger that instinct in a relatively controlled environment. 1 which is less effective but more controlled is to bring the heart rate up to the target range (Google the formula for this if you don't know about it) then do some "free sparring" as I call it with active resistance and no scripts. The 2nd is just to go old school randori like we did when I was learning aikido, which is more like what I think they call a "bull ring" in kajukenbo. Basically, have some classmates jump you and just stop before it gets out of hand. It's dangerous, but it's the most effective thing short of going out into the world and getting into real fights.
All facts, fight every fight like your life is on the line no matter what and you reflexes will be amazing. Never have the mindset like it's just an ordinary fight

There is not too many people that have a good mindset like you do. I have watched many people fight and only a token few guys I respect is Bruce Lee because his mindset is clear, pure and is like water as he said so many times. He put so much time into the mental side of martial arts as you do and that is awesome. I have admired your work for many years. Thank you for pointing out the importance of where your mind goes, your energy flows. When I watch UFC fights, I can see professional fighters get pumped up in the back room or for weeks before the fight, but they allow anger, resentment or revenge into their fight plan all of a sudden and they lose. If you watch Anderson he looks up, feels up and takes deep breaths. Watching Anderson SIlva focus on the task at hand and not allowing the words of another man outside the Octagon before the fight to get under his skin and allow his words to affect his performance inside the Octagon would be normal. I totally agree, your mindset and mental state in a combat situation is very important. In a combat situation you have to be ferocious. If a person is set on robbing you or whatever you have got to be vicious in your mindset and fight with that same mentality like your life depends on it because it does.

The level of discipline so high.
I never went into martial arts training. I grew up as the short, skinny kid with a bad attitude, and nothing to back it up. In other words, I got my ass kicked damn near everyday til I was 11 or 12. I honestly wouldnt take it back for the world. That toughened me up in ways alot of people would never reach. It greatly sharpened my mind as well. It sucks to go through, but in hindsight, its what helped me survive in later years. The only true way out, is through.

I truly wish I could train under this guy. He seems to know his stuff. Unfortunately, training with him is nearly impossible. It would be great for my health and also self defense. The way people are nowadays, you need some way to defend yourself. Shouldn't have to, but that's the world we live in, unfortunately. I wish there were more dojo close to me so I could be able to learn. For one, to build self confidence. Mr. Jai White, you truly a great sensei, from what I've seen in your videos and interviews. You don't seem to walk around like a badass, which I have seen some do when they learn a discipline. A true role model. Besides, how can anyone be a true leader unless they should the rest of us that it can be done. Keep it up sir. Great video Michael. Here’s another topic you should do a video on. I’m seeing more and more videos showing women fighting men and the idea that when the man gases out the woman is in control. You’re so right that the attacker knows what they’re doing and is at least a couple steps ahead of you. You have no clue that the attacker targeted you while they’re calculating their every move. So even if you’re a trained female athlete that’s been doing one form or another of martial arts, I wouldn’t plan on using those skills as defense unless you have no other choice. You should try to avoid the confrontation if you can as a first strategy. The Gracie brother’s (Rener and Ryron) showed a film of a male black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu being confrontational as part of road range and being shot to death. The black belt was beating the guy up until he pulled out a gun and shot him to death. Trained women fighting untrained men and NOT emphasizing the importance of avoiding a confrontation if you can sends the wrong message.

This is so true. People practicing any kind of martial art think that technique is far more important than the mindset...FALSE! Technique is useless unless you have what it takes to apply it. To be hones, I personally think that mindset is the key to everything you do in your life, self defense makes no exception. All people of great accomplishments are different from the ones that never achieve anything exactly by this mental toughness, analyzing the situation they are in and identifying the best course of action they need to take to get out with it, and when someone is threatening your life, it is a do or die situation, it's your life or his, there's no second guessing. Watch Bruce Lee, or read about Miyamoto Musashi, two of the greatest fighters in the world that ever walked in Earth, (each in its own time) and you will instantly notice their stoic, absolute focused mind. When the situation calls for it, they will only look in your eyes and they almost materialize their bloodlust, in that moment of crisis they sweat confidence so much that they won the fight before it even started by demoralizing you with their dominant presence. MJW, I have nothing but deep respect for you as a fighter, as an actor, and as a true man of action. I wish people would realize the importance of your words and insights, instead of fooling themselves with bad content and frauds that claim to know it all about martial arts here on youtube just for the sake of their wallet... . You being so underrated only makes me realize how much people love to fool themselves with fairy tales just to comfort their ego or look cool in front of their girlfriend or peers, instead of accepting the truth...in real life situation it's their funeral anyway...

The more i develop myself the more I read that mindset and belief is everything. Belief in yourself, mindset that you are it. That is the most crucial determining factor, everything else follows... If only I knew that as a child.. Used to be an introvert, shy, friendless, gamer and preferred to stay in my comfort zone because no one told me otherwise...
