EURO NYMPHING: The LITTLE JUNIATA. Fall Fly Fishing in Central PA
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Spent an October day fly fishing on Central PA's Little J. The conditions were your typical fall conditions-low and clear water. Staying below the fish in these conditions is always key. As well as, light tippet (7x) and single nymphing.
It started out cold but as the temps rose in mid day, the fish moved into the shallow riffles. The bite pretty much lasted all day.
The winning flies were a size 16 pink beaded Walt's worm and a new original pattern of mine in a size 14. I have since named it the "Jack Daniel's". The name has come from the term "whiskey" (Troutbitten's, Dom has coined this term for a 20+ inch trout).
Patterns always develop as we fish. Paying attention to them is always key.
Hope you enjoy and tight lines!

You have the best euro nymphing videos on UA-cam hands down. It’s great how you explain exactly how you attack the river. Keep making videos because they’re awesome and have helped me out a ton!
Really awesome of you to say, Chase! Appreciate you watching the channel. I’ll keep at it and glad they are helping. Tight lines to you!
I learn so much from your videos. This one has excellent lighting where we can see the sighter often, and I seldom see any sign of movement on the sighter when you set the hook! That's why you catch 5 times as many fish as the rest of us! 🥲
Glad it is helpful, Alex! Haha, keep at it. The more you focus on it, the more you'll see it. Good luck to you and tight lines!
Cory is always great on the play by play, telling you what’s he’s doing as he does it. Love it.
Appreciate it, Chris! Nice of you to say. Thank you for watching and tight lines!
Hey Cory! Wow what a great session you had! Gorgeous brownies!! Dude…you make it look easy. Looks like you had that place all to yourself. Really enjoy your videos….thanks for sharing! Tight lines my friend!!
Vinny! Appreciate it, my friend! I did have the place to myself. The beauty of fishing in the fall. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you are getting at em! Tight lines!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Really enjoyed watching how you fished and enjoyed your sharing of fishing tips and strategies. Showing the flies you used was a great bonus! Very glad I am subscribed to your channel! Thanks again!
Thank you, Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate the sub and thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot for sharing this video Cory...really enjoy watching how you fish the various types of water in front of you...always learn something from your river craft, detailed explanations and shared ESN fishing techniques...so helpful...you certainly have some lovely rivers in PA...tight lines from the UK...'there we go!' 😅
Appreciate it, TK! Glad you enjoyed. We are blessed with some beautiful streams here and I know you are as well on your side of the pond. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines, my friend!
Another top quality video with some beautiful fish. Many thanks!! 👍🏼🎣 (Also great to see the Davey knot being used)
Thank you, Nick. Appreciate it! Love the Davy. Simple and strong!
@@OldDominionTroutBum I've been using the hemostat PItzen knot you described in a previous video. In my hands, it's a lot stronger than the Davy (or double Davy) knot. I'd love to know your thoughts on this issue.
@@alexargyros7186 Alex, The Pitzen is definitely stronger than the Davy (although the Davy is pretty darn strong). But, I prefer the Davy on my flies as opposed to the Pitzen (which I use at the tippet ring) as I want the weakest knot at my fly. If you are stuck (or a fish breaks you), I want it to break at the fly, instead of my tippet ring. When you use both knots of the same strength, I find it is a crap shoot between which break first.
That being said, I have tons of confidence on the Davy (I just use the single).
Hope the is helps. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely awesome, great play by play, looks like the TBD fly is a hot fly
Thank you, Michael! That fly is now called the Jack Daniel's. It is a good one!
All I can say is Thank You for another great video Cory !
One can watch your videos over and over / great work.
Appreciate it, Sead! Thanks so much for the support. Tight lines to you!
Great video. Congrats on that “JD” fly. Looking forward to seeing the tie-flying tutorial on that one. That big Brown was awesome.
Thanks, David. The JD video will be coming soon. Was pretty stoked to get that awesome brownie. Appreciate you watching and tight lines!
Best euro instruction ever💯🤺🐳
Thank you, Daryl! Really appreciate it. Tight lines to you!
just truly impressive man. thank you for posting these im learning a bunch from you for sure
Thanks so much. Glad the videos are helping. Good luck and tight lines to you!
What a fantastic session. Stunning river. Always great practical lessons in your videos. 👏
Thanks, Anthony. Appreciate it! Tight lines to you!
This vid was incredible
Thanks so much, Brett. Appreciate you watching.
Another Great Video with great content. I was in Michigan earlier this month fishing with my brother and we had very similar experiences with the location of the fish. Hope we cross paths on the water someday soon.
Love it when they get up in the shallow riffs, David. Glad you had a great trip with your brother. Hope to see you, as well. Thanks for watching!
Great video & some beautiful fish!! Thanks!! Nice to see another Galvan fan & someone else who believes in the Davy knot!
Thank you, Wallace! Love the Galvan and love the Davy!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Seems like “The Little J” might be the obvious name for that fly 😉
I really appreciate these videos. It’s great to see the different streams and the fish you catch, but what is even better is the instruction and the play-by-play of how you approach the water. Thanks again for these videos.
Thanks so much for watching and for your comments, Brian! Really appreciate it. Hope the fall has been good to you. Tight lines!
I'm from PA and everytime I hear you say water(wuder)it takes me back. Love it! Took me a long time to stop saying it that way myself after I moved - probably because I wasn't trying to change it. I live in the Smoky Mountains of NC now and just started fly fishing this year. Lots of good places to fish, but I'm in the putting in your dues stage of fly fishing. A nice way of saying I'm not very good yet, but I love doing it! You are really hitting them Trout. I sometimes go 4 or 5 days without catching a fish! Just started euro nymphing myself and really like the control and feel. Anyway, great channel - I really enjoy your videos and just subscribed. Appreciate the Euro tips. Your inspiring me to head back to PA to see some Family and try the fishing that way.
Jon, I’m glad I take you back to PA-but I’m from VA! Maybe it’s because I love PA so much or that my parents are from NJ that I picked it up. Even my wife makes fun of me!
Glad you are getting back out fly fishing. Keep at it and it will start clicking for you.
I appreciate you subbing and watching. Good luck and tight lines to you!
Excellent
Appreciate it!
Cory, another great video. I know that river well. It’s one of my favorites. I love that you work a cigar into your tightline nymphing game! I need to work on that. I love that you highlighted catching fish in the skinny water. Admittedly, that’s something I struggle with. This video really demonstrated how many fish can easily get passed up if you neglect those spots. As always, I appreciate the work you do. Thanks for sharing.
Jeff
Appreciate it, Jeff. The J is an awesome river. Just love it. And nothing better to be out there on it with a stogie! You are right…a lot of people pass up that skinny water to fish those deeper runs. Certain times they are just in there big time. Thanks so much for watching and hope the fall has been good to you. Tight lines!
Hey hey Cory! Nice job up on the J! Glad to see the temps are down and fish moving outta the deep holes and on the feed. I think you’ll be enjoying those sections of water many more times. Love the Little J!! Thanks for sharing.
Scott!! Appreciate it brother! They were definitely on the feed. And you can bet I’ll being enjoying those areas in the future! The J is a fabulous stream. Thanks for watching my friend!
Welcome back...It's been a long, hot, dry summer. Great video... you've taught me a lot.
Good to be back, Richard! It has been long and hot. Glad the vids have been helpful. Continued success to you and tight lines!
Cory, a vote here to name the fly you catch most of the fish on here this: TBD fly. I think it could catch on!
Ha, didn’t realize my own pun there.
Haha! After that day-I almost went with that name! Since then I have named it the "Jack Daniel's". Tight lines to you, Scott. Appreciate you watching!
Couldn't have asked for a better scouting report. Was on the Little J last 2 days and had seen your video the week before. Water is super low, but your 2 top flies worked very well indeed. Looking forward to the video on the Jack Daniels, but your description was enough to get me going. Superb content as always.
Glad you had a great trip! Appreciate you watching-that Jack Daniel's video will be coming out soon. Thanks so much and continued tight lines!
Great video, superb play by play. Your Jack Daniel's aka fall slayer will be another tying must watch 🪰Thank you for sharing your talents 👍
Appreciate it! I'll be doing the Jack Daniel's video in the very near future. Thanks so much for watching!
A great watch and a good lesson to fish the shallow riffles I usually pass by!
Thanks is much , P.A.! Can’t pass up those shallow riffs!
As always, another great video Cory!
Thank you, Joe! Appreciate it. Tight lines to you!
Good explanation Cory as usual ...I really like your casting style ... and " to be determined bug " lol.
Haha. Thanks, Bubba! And that bug is officially named the "Jack Daniel's" (caught a whiskey on it) Appreciate you watching!
I must say, you are very skilled at the net young chap!
Appreciate it! Thanks so much for watching!
Your explanation about where you were finding fish throughout the day was exactly what I found when I fished LJ last week. Nice to see you confirm my observations. Name that bug!
They were definitely in the shallows for sure. Love it when they get up in there like that. I have since named it...the "Jack Daniel's". Since I got a whiskey on it!
Good one Cory. Good info on how they move into the riffles to feed as the water temps rise. I’ve seen it even in the winter. 👍🍺
I've seen it in the winter as well, Louie. Thanks so much and appreciate you watching. Tight lines!
I was on a different river early to late and same thing, I couldn't feel my fingers. Afternoon things picked up. Lesson learned they just weren't there until if warmed up, then caught some nice fish. Thanks for sharing your observations.
Sure thing, Donald. That’s fall fishing for you. Starts off slow, then turns on. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
Good point on finding the fish! Thx for sharing your knowledge. I hit the J a couple times in September, but have not released those videos yet. Tightlines
Appreciate it, Craig! The J is an awesome stream! I’ll be looking forward to your vids. Thanks for watching and tight lines to you!
Amazing work Cory ! Solid outing to say the least! I totally agree with your thoughts on low and clear water , you have to adjust your approach and casting angles , up and across will definitely spook fish ! I’ve been having a tough go at it in exactly that kind of water ! Finding that bite window is definitely key in having a successful day ! Again great work Cory , and let’s see a tying video on that new fly !
Appreciate it, Tony! It was a fun day out there for sure. That tying video will be coming soon….It’s been named the “Jack Daniel’s” btw. Thanks so much for watching, my friend. Tight lines to you!
Great video Cory You are very good explaining your technic Also nice fish and stay safe
Thanks so much, Snook. Appreciate it, my fiend!
I missed my trout bum, but was super happy you were so successful 💛
Thank you, Mrs. Trout Bum! I missed you too!!
Beautiful place!
Yes it is, Old Smuggler!!
Solid work as always!!
Thank you brother!!
Great stuff as usual Cory. I agree 100% with Chris T. sometimes I feel like I'm watching a high quality network production of trout fishing at its best.
Cory - to help viewers get better visual perspective, sometimes it might be very helpful to mention how long your casts are and what your approximate distance is from the opposite side of the stream. That way we can get a better idea of what you're doing. Just an idea to think about.
Thank you, Thomas. Super nice of you to say. Really appreciate it!
And thank you for the feedback. I'll be sure to be more mindful of the distances in the future. Tight lines to you!
Great video and great instructions!
Appreciate it, Scott! Tight lines to you!
Another great video. I’ll be waiting for the tying video for the “Jack Daniels”.
Appreciate it, UH! The Jack Daniel’s video will be coming soon. Thanks for watching and tight lines!
Dude, you're a stud!
You've really taught me a lot and it's upped my game for sure, so thank you!.. I'd love to see you attack a small stream where you don't have the luxury of all that room to cast.. a nice and tight small creek with shrubs and trees all around you.. i'm in Northern California and my little local spot is completely unforgiving... a lot of days i'm catching more trees than fish!.. water loading a back cast is impossible and forget an overhead.. i'm thinking about getting 7'6 3wt to help.
Anyway, it'd be great to see how you would deal with that scenario... and I think everyone would appreciate to see some .. uh.. failures every now and then.. you just make it look so easy!!..
Keep up the great technical teaching.
tight lines!
Haha! Appreciate it, Chris! Glad the videos have been helping.
I do fish some smaller streams-I did a video on one earlier in the year. It may not be as tight as what you experience, but I do fish some streams in the Shenandoah Park of VA that sound like some of what you experience. I love dry-dropper on those small streams and have a 7'11" 4 weight that I use a lot for that type of fishing. I think you will be better served with a shorter rod (and slower action) with a line that has a compact head that is easy to roll cast or deliver accurate casts at short distances.
I'll try to do a future video on a particular stream that sounds like what you experience.
Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
Really nice video, it looks so easy to catch fish 😄
Haha. Thanks so much! Appreciate you watching!
Cory, Nice video and tips today! Those Browns were buttered up indeed! Maybe you can do a fly tying video for the new fly! Nice work!
Thank you, Uni! I’ll be doing a video on the fly…I’ve named it the “Jack Daniel’s” btw.
Nice! Is it because you caught a “ Whiskey “ on that fly 😅
That’s it!
@@OldDominionTroutBum haha that’s awesome Cory. Dom should be flattered 😝
Great vid btw man 👍🏼
Appreciate it, Steve. Tight lines to you!
Good stuff man. 👍👍
Thanks so much! Appreciate you watching!
Hey Cory! Thanks for the video and super instructive as always. I like how you talked about the water temps and then pounded them as the water warmed in the shallow water. I carry a thermometer year round. That new bug served you well! Will you be doing a tying video for that? Tightlines my friend!
Appreciate it, Dale! I always have that thermometer with me as well. Amazing what a couple degrees movement can do. Yes, I’ll be doing a video on the new bug…named it the “Jack Daniel’s”. Tight lines to you, my friend!
Now that we have a "To Be Determined" fly, perhaps the next one, with a nod to baseball playoffs should be called, "A Player To Be Named Later."
Haha. I have since named it the “Jack Daniel’s”. Love the baseball reference…although my Braves didn’t show up against Philly. Appreciate you watching!
Hi Cory,
Great camera work and really enjoyed this video! What bead sizes were you using in the shallow rifs? The water looked like it had a very good flow..
Thanks, Tony. I was using a single 2.8 bead in the shallow riffs. There was some good flow because of the gradient. Appreciate you watching!
Awesome!
Appreciate it, Keith!
I was just there. I'm heading back later this month and in December. I like staying up towards Altoona where the water is smaller I've caught nice brown's up there. I'll probably hit the Gorge the week of Thanksgiving. We don't live in the area anymore I live on the Breeches in Boiling Springs so the Little J is a 2.5 hr trip.
It’s a great stream, Curt. I’ve fished it from Tyrone down to the Frankstown. All of it is fantastic. Good luck when you go. Thanks for watching and tight lines.
@@OldDominionTroutBum yep, be safe in your travels.
Great Productive Day and Video. Hope to see You tying The Jack Daniels Video soon.
Thank you, Thomas. I’ll be doing a Jack Daniel’s video soon. Tight lines to you!
Hi Cory...I'm looking forward to seeing your Jack Daniels tying video too..while on the tying topic, did you ever put together a video of your own dry dropper rig indicator 'caddis' type bouyant dry fly (brown palmered hackle, iron blue CDC, slim deer hair tail I think it was)...apologies if I'm mistaken or I've missed / overlooked it ...I did watch your Lance Egan corn fed Caddis pattern tying video but thought I heard you were thinking of sharing your own pattern tying...thanks a lot
@@Tjk186 Hey TK, I have not done that video yet (The High-n-Dry Hares Ear). I will be doing that and the Jack Daniel's very soon!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Great!...thanks Cory
Another great video, Cory. Question for you. When you move around on the stream from a type of water to another in terms of depth or current speed, do you change fly or do you add/take off split shot? I am one of your subscribers and I haven't seen any situation where you used a split shot. I know you adjust how fast the fly to sink with beads in different weight but how about fast, gorging, and deep pocket water, like 5-6 ft deep? Do you just skip that section of water or do you add split shot? And when you add a split shot, do you add it on top of the fly or put a tippet on the fly hook and put it on that tippet?
Thank you, Masaki. All my weights are in my flies. I don’t use split shot. When I move around the stream, I constantly management my weight according to the depth/current speed/wind. I love pocket water-it’s some of my favorite to fish. I’ll never skip it (even the deep stuff). I’ll just put the appropriate weight fly on (I carry bead sizes from 2.0mm up to 4mm, even some 4.6mm). I can cover all kinds of water with those. If I were to use split shot, I would use a drop-shot method. Hope this helps.
awesome thank you!
Appreciate you watching!
nice Cory. i have been here twice. this is a nice stream
what time of year were you fishing it this time ?
Thank you, James. It really is a beauty of a stream. I was fishing in mid Oct. Thanks so much for watching!
You must have followed the stocking truck.
Haha. Just had a good day out there. Appreciate you watching.
Another great video! I know you use a Contact II T&T rod. Is it the 10-9 3wt?
Appreciate it! I’m using a the 10-9 2wt. Thanks for watching and tight lines.
The little J is such a great river... it's fickle, though.
It really is a great stream. A Central, PA gem. Thanks for watching!
Was just fishing there on Sunday
It's a great stream, Patrick. Thanks for watching!
Cory, I am not sure I really understand your "reach cast." When you have a minute (no hurry), would you please explain how you do the "reach cast" and why you do it (under what circumstances). I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Many Thanks, Keith
Keith, It's a cast you use when you are fishing upstream of you and to the side so you can keep everything "in line" or parallel on your drift. It keeps your sighter in front of your bugs, and is especially helpful in faster water/pocket water. You make your cast upstream and while your bugs are still in the air, you make an adjustment downstream of your bugs. If you don't do it, a lot of times your sighter will get ahead of your bugs, which is what you do NOT want.
If you watch this video at the 10:16 mark , I explain it more:
ua-cam.com/video/vTgC2WgETPY/v-deo.html
Hope this helps.
Great video. I’m a pin fisherman trying to get into using a fly rig and start fly fishing. My question is. Is it possible for you to explain your set up for this style of fly fishing? This is the style that intrigues me the most. I’d love to know the set up you’re running. Thanks in advance.
Appreciate it, MCT. I’ve done a video on my leader setup (the Micro Leader video). I talk about my there. My rod in this video is a T&T Contact ll, 10ft 9in 2wt.
A euro rod (10ft 3wt). Is a good start. Then the leader is key. I would suggest starting with a level 8-10# test colored suffix or amnesia to a 3x bi-colored sighter. Once you get used to this style, you can start advancing your leader formula.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Another great one Cory!!! I was going to go to the J recently but the stream reports were not so good low n slow…. But you proved that wrong!!!! Hey where do you stay when you get up that way??? Thanks
Thanks, Scott! It is super low but there is still good water out there.
I get an Air BnB when I’m out there in the State College area. Appreciate you watching, my friend!
@@OldDominionTroutBum I pulled the trigger tonight found a sweet deal on a T&T !! So now there is no reason I can’t fish like you!!!!
@@scottnock5241 Haha. You are going to love it, Scott!
Cory and suggestions where to park your car ?? I like to come up to the little J but i cant seem to find a good place to leave my Truck ?
Vincent, the road parallels the Little J for almost it's whole length (with the exception of a few areas). There are pull off areas everywhere.
Great looking flies at the end of video. I’m tying a crawfish pattern that’s catching the bigger browns really well. It’s main features are two zonker strips for pinchers. Do you have any crawfish patterns ? Thanks!!
Thanks Chadd! Your pattern sounds great! I don't have any crawfish patterns , but I use the Honey Badger Sculpin in a natural color. I think it does a great job for imitating small crayfish. Appreciate you watching!

Appreciate you watching.
Awesome video again! .. I have a question I notice you used the Davy knot . I have slippage with the knot . I mostly use 6x .. do you do a double Davy ? Thanks !
Thanks Joey! I use a single Davy knot all the time, even down to 8x. I’m sure you are getting slippage due to the knot being seated properly. Make sure when you seat the knot, the tag pops out at a perfect 90 degree angle. When you get that-it’s perfect. Hope this helps.

Watch this video. It’s really helpful.
@@OldDominionTroutBum sweet! Thank you! . I will work on my Davy knot 😊👍 love the videos and look forward to the next one !
Thank you Corey! So how do decide which rod weight/length you are going to use? You’ve mentioned you have 2 wt and 3 wt outfits with 10ft and 10ft9in rod lengths. Thanks again!
Anytime, Beaker. The rod length depends on the size of the stream. Smaller streams (30-40 ft wide or less on average), I'll use my 10 ft rod. Larger, I'll go with my 10ft 9". I use my 2wt when I know I'll be using 7x-6x tippet (which I do alot). If I am fishing heavier water, where I need more weight or if I know I'll get into a steady dose of larger fish and I may go up to 5x (think Delaware River), I'll use my 3 weight. Hope this helps.
Hi , @3:22 “ with this clear water you cannot do an up and across “, Why?
Thanks
Gregory, when you have water that clear (and low), you have to stay below the fish or else you will spook them. Upstream casts and fishing back to you will serve you better in these conditions. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Can I ask what location on the Little Juniata you were fishing?
I was on the lower J, below Spruce.
Are you using a mono rig? I can’t tell whether the line you are holding in your non rod hand is mono or fly line.
Ben, I use a micro leader with a Euro Line. Sometimes, depending on the camera angle they seem to blend together, but I do start with the Euro line in my hand after the cast.
What line/leader combo do you use? How long is your leader?
My setup is in this video. It's also in the description.

October best month for fly fishing!😍
A fabulous month! Appreciate you watching!
What rod co you use?😊
In this video-it’s a T&T Contact ll 10ft 9in 2wt.
