Spring Creek, PA: Euro Nymphing for Wild Brown Trout

- Spent an afternoon fly fishing and euro nymphing Spring Creek in Central, PA. It was a cold, rainy Mother's Day but it didn't slow down the bite as I caught fish from the moment I started to the moment I ended. It was a steady dose of Euro Nymphing with an size 16 Olive Krystal Flash Perdigon on the bottom fly and a size 18 Walt's Worm with an orange collar for the dropper.
I give you some helpful tips along the way.

Another great video. Man you caught a bunch. Gotta love having the stream to yourself. One of the reasons I enjoy fishing in the rain. I put to use the wrapped mono hack a bunch now. It’s a game changer on the thin leader for sure.

Nicely done mate, wow those fish were stacked up! I enjoy your style of fishing, I do something pretty similar here in Aus because most of our rivers are smaller and lower flow than a lot of US waters, so there's lots of casting, fishing at distance, single nymph type of stuff. Really fun way to fish. Keep the videos coming!

There's one right behind him where he's in the "Riviera Paradise" section where you see the guide rails in front of him , It's a 4-story slant-roof tower of a house built on an old site of an old camp. It has huge windows and like more than 1 balcony. Amazingly, nothing has been POSTED there yet. Usually people are really cool around Spring and the NW tribs, but you get Yuppie A-holes who find other humans enjoying their deeded piece of Nature getting in the way of the smell of their own farts.
I learn watching and listening,, looking forward to trying this soon ..be heading up tomorrow ,, hopefully get some good fishing both upper ny delaware wb eb tribs,, going to try some egg patterns too ( have never really tried them but might be worth trying if it's slow.. today going to outfit my vest for euro nymph rigs tie some more bugs you tie ty for this too! yes casting and presentation very much it!

Watched this again tonight after no luck on Tully today (real low) and folks everywhere..I’m going to setup my Euro nymphing rod with the Cortland braided line….since I mostly nymph … might as well go off the deep end lol…..Tight lines !!!!!!!!!

Appreciate you being hooked, Aaron! That is a great (and tough!) question. If I were only fishing Spring Creek size streams it would definitely be the 10ft 2wt. If I were fishing larger ones most of the time, I would have the longer 2wt. If you can tell me what streams you frequent, I can give you a better answer. I will tell you, my 3 weight is for larger streams, stronger current (windy conditions) where I know I will be throwing heavier bugs or getting a steady dose of bigger fish. Appreciate it Dale! I use walts for a scud or sow bug imitation. Both natural hares ear and olive do really well for them. If you want you can pick it out with velcro, but usually after a few fish they will do it for you. Good luck!

Thanks Paul! Leader is approx 20ft to my tippet ring. Then 4-5ft of tippet. The spacing between flies is typically 20-24”. Hope this helps.

Are you running a dropshot rig, or simply using a larger anchor fly to get you down quickly? Great video lots of tips for a beginner. I'm trying to soak up as much info as possible on my local waterways. Love fishing spring creek and Penns!
John, I'm euro nymphing. No dropshot. I am using the weight of my flies to get down, but the term anchor really suggests that it is a super heavy fly and that's not always the case. There were times in this video, that I had 2 light flies on. Btw, Central PA is heaven on earth...a trout fisherman's paradise!

What setup are you using are you using a euro nymphing line ? And what size tippet you using off the line is it a 1xtippet down to an indicator then after the indicator 4x and how much tippet are you using straight from fly line is it a rod length thanks
Hey Abi, in this video I’m using a T&T Contact ll 10ft 2wt. I have a Cortland Euro nymphing line. Attached to that I have approx 18ft of 18mm (4x) Sempe mono, then 4ft of Hanak 5x sighter to a tippet ring. From there I run 3-5 ft of 6-7x of fluorocarbon tippet depending on the depth.
How do you keep your point fly from hanging up in the water cress on spring creek? I was wondering if a drop shot rig would work better than having a hook on the bottom.
The water cress on Spring creek is patchy. It doesn’t really cover the entire bottom. If you are fishing over it and hanging up…go lighter so your fly rides just above it (you never really want to be bouncing on the bottom) or you can use a dry-dropper to have your bottom fly do the same. If you use drop shot then your split shot will surely get hung up in the water cress. Hope this helps.
Do you mean the stringy moss on the bottom? There isn't any cress to any extent in Spring. It's too fast. It's a rocky stream. There is lots of cress in the slow and mucky springs that feed it. But there is a stringy , mossy growth on the rocks that gets really problematic when it gets low and warmer in the summer. Try a jig hook for your nymphs. Having that point UP instead of down helps like 80-90%. Along with what O,D. Trout Bum said.
When you say the perdition is on the point are you using a heavy fly on the bottom and a tag above it or are you fishing the. Flies in a straight line? Thanks for all the instructional comments
Great question Dennis. The point fly is the bottom fly. Most of the video I was fishing a heavier perdigon on the point and a lighter fly on my tag. When I switched to a lighter fly on my point, it was the same weight as my tag. This way both bugs are drifting in the same line through the water column. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Definitely would recommend going lighter when the fish are up in the column/rising. Even dry-dropper works well then.

Are you using Euro nymphing fly line, if so what size and brand. Thx I’ve recently made some Euro nymphing leaders ala George Daniels but still using regular Rio WF fly line…
Hey Berks…I am using 22mm Cortland Euro line w a braided core. You will definitely see more benefits from a Euro line because it will not slide back down you rod even if it’s 3/4 up the rod. Plus you have sensitivity. Thanks so much for watching!
Love your videos. My daughter goes to penn state. I always fish spring creek when I’m up there. I was just there yesterday and picked up 10. Actually got some risers on olives in the afternoon. Are you using a euro line or is that a regular fly line?

Hey Phil-The connection doesn’t catch. I whip finish small loop at the end of my euro fly line and tie my leader to in with a 16-20. I have a long leader (approx 23ft to the tippet ring) so the euro line rarely makes it out of the top. I talk about it here:

Ryan, I love Partagas or Macanudo. But when fishing, I stick to a JR Dominican brand. Something that can take a dunking without getting upset!

Do you only quarter upstream? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you extend the drift past your body. Maybe camera angle.
It might be the camera angle. I caught a ton on the swing below me. There were a times I fished directly upstream, but it really depended on the water type I was fishing. One of my older videos I do talk specifically about fishing upstream. Thanks for watching Preston!

Amongst everything else, the trout in spring are EVERYWHERE, especially under your feet. You have to nymph everything on your way out to the water you really want to fish. So, of course, you spook several fish you never see. Those spooked fish startle other fish. YOu can really be your own worst enemy some times.
Really love Spring. It gives you tons of opportunities to catch fish. And when you do it right, you will definitely be rewarded.
but how can you possibly stay in the same seam 25 ft out. You are definitely crossing seams during your drift resulting in an inaccurate presentation. Staying in one seam is the pinnacle of good euro nymphing. That is only possible under or near the rod tip. You catch fish yes buy you can double that fishing in one seam.
You are correct about the importance of staying in the same seam. You can easily do this if you are fishing upstream back to you. Also casting up and across you can make short, accurate drifts from distance. There are many ways to get a perfect drift and it’s not always under the rod tip. Thanks for your comment.
