Hey Cory, just wanting to say thanks for everything! I got out on the water following your set up and your techniques and had my first 20+ fish day on the river! You’re amazing to learn from, hope to keep watching you for many years to come!!
The most important thing I have to say is: Thank you Cory, for all your videos!. I've been fishing for 7 months and I still hear your words: "positioning, casting, reading the river" :-) Greetings from Poland - Kris
Another great and helpful video Cory focusing on positioning on/in the stream using your very effective tuck casts to hungry midge taking fish ... I love your version of paradise and thank you for sharing your skills
Cory, I re-watched your video. Those rainbows are kind of colored like a cutthroat, maybe even a brook trout. Learned a lot from this vid. And the fish are finally starting to wake up. Best,Tony
Glad it was helpful, Tony. They really are some of the most beautiful rainbows I've caught. This tailwater never gets above 62 in the heat of the summer. I'm not sure but perhaps the perfect year round temps has something to do with it? Glad it is starting up for you.
Your channel has been invaluable for teaching me the nuances of Euro Nymphing. I appreciate it. Picked up a rod this spring, and have been fortunate to get out fairly often, and my catch rate has doubled, maybe even tripled. It’s also helped out my standard fly fishing game, as now I’m more aware of where the fish truly hold. Good stuff!
Really really really enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for taking the effort to produce this and put it available. Best regards from The Netherlands, Martin!!
Hey Cory! Love the pocket water. Those bows were stunning and I love their paddles. Very instructive as always. Here’s to a great season and Tightlines my friend!
Dale! Thanks so much! Yes, they are gorgeous, big paddled rainbows in this river. Full of fight. Same to you on the season. Spring is here! Tight lines, my friend!
Don’t loose sleep over the ones you lost Cory, can’t net em all , and that was an epic day with all good sized fish ! It’s been a long time since I had a day come close to that one ! Excellent work adjusting and maneuvering into position for the best possible drift ! Learning so much from you and much appreciate the tutorial throughout the video! Again congrats on a fantastic day buddy!! Tight lines and hope to see you out there someday!
So true, Tony....Can't get em all! It was a heck of a day out there for sure. I appreciate the kind words. Glad it helps. Hope the spring is good to you. Thanks so much for watching and I hope to see you out there, as well. Tight lines, my friend!
Nice outing! Great explanations...those were Some nice fish! Hoping to do same tomorrow!!!! Love the olive flash perdigon. Two casts two fish,,,,,tough to beat!
Nice work Cory. Great looking water and those bows were soooo beautiful! Funny…I was out fishing that same day in the rain on a smaller stream up here in the Northeast and had a really good day. Excellent content as always and thanks for sharing. Tight lines!
Vinny! It really is a heck of a stream with some gorgeous rainbows. Glad you have been getting at it. Hope this spring is good to you. Grannoms should be popping soon! Tight lines, my friend!
Thank for another great video the Spanish bullet its a good fly I use it up in Vermont and it works great!! I want to get to Pennsylvania this summer in the worst way!
Appreciate it, Gregg! The Spanish Bullet is a good one. I’ve used it on the Battenkill in Vermont -works great in the tea color water. PA has TONS of great water to fish. Gotta get there! Thanks for watching!
Hi Cory, Thank you for the videos. I'm just now embracing euro nymphing and getting my bearings. So at 8:25 in the video, are you saying that the nymph got down to 3' within 5' of the drift. (with the tuck). Thanks
Hey, 0056. Yes, with a tuck, I got my bugs down really quick. That's why it is such an important cast. I've done a video on the tuck cast here: ua-cam.com/video/-isxjoKmkt4/v-deo.htmlsi=EdpP0RtWKF3oHjqM Hope this helps and good luck with your learning curve!
Smoking them like always Cory, those were definitely some pretty bows and some nice looking water. I'll be giving those 16 olive perdigon's a try when I head to the Catskills in May
Appreciate it, SHC! Love the bows there. They never give up. Remind me of the Catskill’s bows! The Olive flash perdigon will definitely work there for you. Good luck in May.
I assume that's the dam upstream. Looks like it's from another era. And is that flat bedrock you're standing on around 18:46? Love the stream and the stunning 'bows.
It is, Larry. It was started in 1974 and completed in ‘79. And it is bedrock. That area is full of it. It really is a beautiful stream with equally beautiful rainbows. Appreciate you watching.
Cory, Did u say you were using a tuck cast to control your sink on the flies? R u using split shot or just a 3.3 bead? Single or double flies? Also, tried you net management set. Works pretty good. Makes sense. May try something besides para cord. I don’t need 100 yds and that’s the smallest amount I could find. Best, Tony
Tony, I use the tuck to drive the bugs down to depth right away. When fishing real quick pocket water, where you have little time for your bugs to sink, it is the best way to accomplish it. I don't use split shot-my weight is in the bugs. Most of that time I had a 3.3 bead on bottom (a couple of times a 2.8). I was switching between a single fly and double (my dropper was a 2.5). Glad the net is working for you. You definitely get a lifetime supply of paracord when you buy it. Tight lines to you!
Cory, this visual unlocked my home waters to me. Seeing that tuck cast in this perspective made Joe Humphrey's and George Daniel's words all click and I've been pulling fish out of the weirdest pockets since then. It is so frickin' cool being able to toss your nymphs under fast heavy water to get to those nice fishy pockets no one believes are there. Thank you, big fan of your videos and technique!! Do you have any tips getting better hooksets and fighting fish on the 2wt? I keep losing fish(popping off, not breaking off) on my 10 ft 2wt Recon and I really want to figure it out. I switch out to my 4wt Cortland Nymph and land more fish! I love everything else on the 2wt but just cant seem to keep them on.
Hey Kyle. Appreciate the kind words and glad the videos are helping! I use a couple of T&T 2wts and never have a problem keeping fish pinned. I don't change my style between my 2wts and 3wts. I would say it is the "bounce" effect of the rod that causes the loss of a lot of fish (especially smaller ones), but that is usually with stiffer rods. It could be that your 2wt is super limber and you may not be driving the hook home, but I haven't heard of that problem with the Recon. What size tippet do you usually use with your 2wt? This is a finesse rod and does better with lighter leaders and lighter tippet.
@@OldDominionTroutBumThat could be my issue. I find myself sticking to that 4x at the end of a mono rig always hesitating to go down to my 5x and 6x spools scared to break off. I've gotten comfy on the 4wt and aggressively playing fish I think I need to lighten up on my technique so I can manage that lighter tippet!!
@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks for your responses and your wisdom. going to get a 7x spool and go out there next with only the 6x and 7x spools to get myself using em.
Thank you, Stephen. That's what I was trying to do when I started the channel-have you feel like you are fishing with me on the stream. I was fishing with my 10'9" 2wt. Really love that rod.
Hello great content! I’m looking at your exact euro setup. Did you find you have to add the extra Galvan weight to your reel for balance or was it not necessary?
Great, helpful stuff as usual Cory. Your explanations about drifts and positioning are very helpful. My home waters are very narrow so vertical sighters at right angles to the flow are tough to get. Any suggestions for fishing narrower water where straight upstream is almost required and verticals are rare if not impossible?
Glad it was helpful, Tim. Appreciate it. I like to fish straight upstream alot. Fishing a longer rod can help you get (almost) vertical by holding your rod tip up higher starting at about 20ft in front of you, if conditions allow to get closer to the fish. Depending on the depth, you can lengthen your tippet and make longer straight upstream casts to get your bugs down (you won't get vertical-but you will get them down) Also floating the sighter or dry dropper is a deadly upstream technique. It really is all about conditions, currents flows, etc... in what the fish allow you to do. Without seeing the stream-it is tough for me to say, but I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Thanks Cory. I was just thinking that a longer rod and leader might help in the situation I described. Maybe I’m actually beginning to learn something! Thanks for your contributions to my fishing enjoyment (on the water and on UA-cam)
Great video as always. Your channel has become one of my favorites. I’ve learned a ton. I heard you say that you switched to Airflo line. Have you noticed any difference in durability? I’ve used Rio and I’m currently using Cortland and I’m constantly having to clipping it back and redo my micro loop. Maybe that’s just how euro line is? Thanks
Thank you, Shawn. Really appreciate it! Glad it's been helping. I have switched to Airflo. Euro lines are made really thin-they do get beat up and start peeling. In my opinion, Airflo makes one of, if not, the toughest and most durable euro lines out there. Thanks for watching.
That was great water !! Beautiful rainbows to net. So, besides the fish, what cigars do you like when fishing? Trying myself to branch out into something new. Great vid!
It is beautiful water and rainbows, James. I usually smoke JR brand cigars when fishing. You can get some really good smokes from there and not feel too bad if one gets a little wet. I was smoking a Brocatus (Domincans). They are good. Appreciate you watching!
Nate, I still have the Ross and use it often. I use it more on my 10ft rods. The Galvan is a smidge heavier and balances my 10ft 9in rods nicer. Thanks so much for watching!
I'm curious about your leader setup. It looks like your using a tactical line with a relatively short mono leader. I'm new to euro and have only fished for wild fish in the winter using #26 and #28 midges with a drop shot rig. I am using a tactical line with about a 15' leader and it seems to work well. I haven't really tried any perdigons yet. I would like to know what you think.
Paul, my leader is approx 23ft to my tippet ring coming off my Euro line. If you would like to see it, watch this video here: ua-cam.com/video/_LsHADwel28/v-deo.html A drop shot certainly works, especially with smaller flies like you are using, but I prefer to have my weight in the flies themselves. It more versatile this way. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching.
Hello Cory. I just moved to NC and am looking for tailwater across the border into VA. Is this the Jackson river tailwater? I apologize in advance if my request is a breach of etiquette. Thanks.
Cory very nice one again!!! Great water to fish it looks like!! I wish there were more tail race waters to fish.. Impressive how you handled all the different water types.. What tippet size were you using?
Appreciate it, Scott! It is great water. Tailwaters do make it nice for year round fishing. And thanks so much for the compliment. I was using 6x all day.
@@OldDominionTroutBum that 6x really held on to those pigs in that current!! I liked that you showed what really happens that even you have the hook pulled and occasionally break off. The break offs do haunt you! I had a nice brown break me last summer in a small class A, after he ate my dry he immediately took me into a deadfall on 7x and a full fox 2WT nothing I could do!!! But I know exactly where he is and plan on trying to get him to eat this summer!!! It eats you up!! I don’t have enough confidence with those perdigons yet either, I’m going to try and use the more..
@@OldDominionTroutBum Cory what brand tippet do you use? I am experimenting this year. I’m not crazy about what I’m testing but it’s not breaking either! But Iv only used the 4x and very little 5x, I just spooled up the 6-7x last week. I have a whole box of perdigons!! Just don’t lead with them and just don’t have the confidence they catch in any water any time?? But I see you catching the heck out of them so I guess they do but you fish better water.
Hi Cory, while I was healing up from prostate cancer surgery I studied your videos quite a bit, watching some of them several times. Once given the go ahead to fish in January, I have done pretty well with it, catching at least a couple of holdovers each time out. Now that streams around here are restocked, the success has been great. Stockies are easy pickings, but I caught one last night that was no stockie, unless our state is putting in 22" browns now! An absolute thrill to seal the deal on that beast! Keep up the good work, Cory. Your videos are both entertaining and educational. Best, Sam
I’m glad they have been helpful, Sam. Happy the trout have been cooperative since you got the go-ahead. Congrats on your 22” beast! Here’s to a ultra speedy recovery as well! Tight lines to you!
Great video. Also, I appreciate your important message in your recent IG post. Regarding the latter, may I ask your favorite straight and curved barbless hook brand/model? If size range matters, I’m thinking 14-16 range.
Thank you, Austin. Appreciate it. For straight hooks, I like the Hanak 400 and the Dohiku 302 & 303. For curved, I like the Hanak 450 and The Dohiku 644. I use a lot of these hooks. The 644 I use an inverted bead. The Dohiku 303 is a straight hook (non-jig). I use inverted and slotted beads with it as well. Thanks so much for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I too like Dohiku. The Hanak are tough for me to track down. On the Dohiku 302, do prefer the standard 302 or the 302 SP? I'm excited to try the 303.
lol what doesn't kill ya makes you stronger lol.. you using using 6x 7x cortland premium Cory in that pocket water ? also the dropper the same or lighter dia.X ? really agree positioning..i have to tie french black tungston midges.. have to have some olives too ty
@@OldDominionTroutBum the double tandem lay over orvis knot I watched over @troutbitten .. you think the tippet would serve more an advantage tying an orvis knot 6x lighter dropper on the main 5x tippet dropper ?

Great video as always, Cory! I was just wondering what made you swap to the Galvan reel over the Ross that I’ve seen in a bunch of your other videos
If you would like to see it, watch this video here:

A drop shot certainly works, especially with smaller flies like you are using, but I prefer to have my weight in the flies themselves. It more versatile this way. Hope this helps.
Appreciate you watching.
just a beautiful rainbow....
-_-
Thank you, Taylor. Appreciate you watching.
Hello Cory. I just moved to NC and am looking for tailwater across the border into VA. Is this the Jackson river tailwater? I apologize in advance if my request is a breach of etiquette. Thanks.
Hey Brian-message me on Instagram and I’m happy to help you with the tailwaters in VA. Thanks for watching.
Great video! What's your rod and reel setup?
Steve, It is a T&T Contact ll 10ft 9in 2wt. Appreciate you watching!
@@scottnock5241Quality 6x is some strong stuff. Good luck on getting that nice brown...he'll be even bigger this year. Got to embrace the perdigon!
I like the 302 SP. The 303 is a pretty awesome hook.
What material do you use for the red and black in the falangista? Holographic tinsel for the red? It looks thin 😊
Jeff, it’s black UTC 70 and the butt is red holographic tinsel. Silver bead. It’s a classic euro bug. Thanks for watching!
@@OldDominionTroutBum I appreciate your time Cory.
lol what doesn't kill ya makes you stronger lol.. you using using 6x 7x cortland premium Cory in that pocket water ? also the dropper the same or lighter dia.X ? really agree positioning..i have to tie french black tungston midges.. have to have some olives too ty
Jon, I was using 6x Cortland Ultra Premium.
@@OldDominionTroutBum the double tandem lay over orvis knot I watched over @troutbitten .. you think the tippet would serve more an advantage tying an orvis knot 6x lighter dropper on the main 5x tippet dropper ?
I appreciate you sharing your skills very much.
Motivates me to do better every time.
Would be great if you could tell me what your leader formular is
Jamie, it’s is in the Description. Appreciate you watching.
No problem mate love watching your videos ive learned alot ...jealous of you americans with the beautiful rivers you have im from the uk but your rivers are something else ..would love to come over one day to fish
Thanks Jamie. Glad they have been helpful! We are blessed with some beautiful rivers here, but you have some good ones yourself over on your side. Cheers, Mate.
Good stiff but no cigar?
Haha. I limited myself to 2 for this video, Philip!
Your reel… is that the Galvin euro reel ?
Hey Matt-it is. The 3.5. Thanks for watching.
Very nice I love my Galvins great video as well that was some nice water
Appreciate it, Matt. Galvan does make one heck of a reel.
Cory, is the 3.5 is on the T&T 10’9” 3wt?
Never mind, just read another comment asking the same thing.
are those rainbows native or stockers?
awesome fishing, btw!
Appreciate it, Matt! All wild rainbows. Thanks so much for watching.
What's your favorite euro setup?
If I had to choose, it would be what I used here: a T&T Contact ll 10ft 9in 2wt. Thanks so much for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum that's a hard one to beat!
I think I know where this is 🤫
It’s a good spot!
Good number of “Ms” bows not “Mr” bows, just saying
Good point 👊
