Again your ability to stay impartial in your reviews and pick apart the film's flaws and strengths is impressive. If I find something wrong with a film I find it hard to say that I like it and that it's a good movie still.
I also have no idea how he manages to stand for his opinions as he does but also offer relevant criticism regardless of whether it dampened his experience. Enjoyment of films is so complicated and varied. Good/bad dichotomy tends to be bogus in this area.
As someone who had battled both a personal battle with addiction and watching others fight wars, this movie was pretty good. Some of the scenes were honestly hard to watch especially when it would bring back flashbacks… can definitely help show a bit more into that pair of shoes
I think the director did the most amazing job with the movie... it really put me in the shoes of both Timothee and Steve's characters. It's chaotic, just like an actual life of a meth addict and their family. He gets better, then relapses, then becomes worse and then feels like he needs to change. It seems like a never-ending cycle. The director definitely did not follow along with the lines of a traditional style movie plot. One thing I disagree with you on is the music. Yes, it was random, but I think the intent (or at least how I perceived it) was to be chaotic and messy, just like the way it was filmed. I also have an interest in drugs and the way they affect people, so this movie was a great perspective on the more emotional side of drug addiction rather than an article or news story that you see online. Thanks for the video!
I've seen people complain that it's 'repetitive' but like...that's the point. I don't have a serious addiction but I've got mental illness (as well as addiction just being in my family and passing that mindset to me), namely ed's and OCD, well not a perfect parallel, I relate heavily with the repetitive nature of my life with mental illness. Especially since those mental illnesses go hand in hand and are SO addictive, if I tried recovering from one the other would drag me back down in it. This movie was frankly painful to watch, I saw myself a lot in Nic, at least in the mindset of addiction. The scenes where he'd lie to his father was so similar to how I'd lie to my mother
I actually didn’t really know too much about drug addiction, but me and my friends wanted to watch a sad movie, so we watched beautiful boy, and oh my god I broke down. I tend to cry at movies easily, but for some reason, this made me full on bawl, even hyperventilate a bit. It’s not even something I relate to or was that interested in, but I cried like a baby next to a bunch of my friends. It really kinda made me think “wow don’t do drugs”
I was disappointed that we never got to really see how the addiction started. His character just appears on drugs and you never really understand why or how this entire story started.
Yesss that bothered me a lot. Also we never got the moment when Nic share his thoughts with the audience just to know what he thinks about it, insteas we got the father reading his diary like whatever. It's a mess and have a lot of unnecessary drama
man i loved how the music was used this is so crazy to me. its one of my favorite things about the movie! John Lennon, Tim Buckley, Pavlov's Dog, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Perry Como?!
I’ve only read David Sheff’s memoir Beautiful Boy and not Tweaked but it’s apparent music is very important to the story (given Nic’s somewhat idolization of Kurt Cobain and the title of the book/film) and how David refers back to songs and moments relating to music that were important to their relationship. Disappointing to hear the music in the film didn’t do a great job of reinforcing its importance to the family but I’m still excited to see it.
@Karsten Runquist In an Interview the Director Felix van Groeningen was asked about the movies soundtrack. He said that in the two memoirs this book is based on they both reference a lot of different eclectic music which he wanted capture in the soundtrack. The interviewer who asked the question liked the soundtrack you thought it didn't work which is both fair. Not hate, just a little fyi :)
Hi, ur my favourite youtuber and ive been waiting for literally ages for this film to come out and im so torn whether to watch this video bc i dont want spoilers rip
It’s a beautifully written movie. I went to see it with my parents because I have been through it. My parents loved me so much and they gave up on me because they knew they couldnt’t help or change me. Ive been sober for two months but it seems like a long time. Even though Meth wasn’t my drug of choice I was in Tim’s position. Running away, asking for money, doing drugs, using multiple drugs and then starting with alcohol. I can genually say that i took alot from this movie. I cried. I hope you can see this movie because its really really good.
Just by the way the whole flashback in the first act thing was probably because the first part of the book was all about nic growing up. And they probably didn’t want to actually make the first act nic growing up. Idk just some thoughts
the book is really stressful and in the dads perspective in the most painful way so im glad to hear it translated. cmbyn is my favorite movie of last year and the sound track was a big part of it so im sad to hear that
i just saw the movie and i agree that the first act was kinda messy but In My Humblest Of Opinions i kinda liked it bc when ive gone through difficult times in my life (although its nothing nearly as intense as whats going on in the movie) i like Reflect on my Wee self so to me thats what david and nic were doing but also i could've just been mesmerized by mr. timothee thank u for coming to my ted talk
SPOILER ALERT!!!! It makes me really happy that the real Dave and Nic Sheff are icons for addiction recovery:) also Nic Sheff has been sober for 11 years now!
yes thank you fro saying it. everyone is saying the cinematography wasn't good but I thought it was so beautiful. and for the story I couldn't imagine it being any other way.
I practically screamed when you said your biggest problem with the film was the music. THANK YOU. I agree completely and it has been something I've brought up with many people when discussing the movie. It felt inauthentic, like a music video, and most of the time the music didn't match how the film made you feel.
in the Netherlands the film is coming out in the 29th of November but its 16+ plus and I wanna goo bad. but my dad told me a trick that we could stil go in the cinema cause I want to see it asap
I just saw the film today as it’s finally made its way into some smaller Canadian cinemas and the film I believe strikes a toll to those who are directly affected by addiction in a whole different way or at least for me it did; Beautiful Boy showed me how easy the line can be crossed with addiction all while I got to see 💕Timmy💕 I would be lying if I said I wasn’t leaving my cinema very distraught not only by having witnessed such a heartbreaking story but also because it made me reflect on my own life. For this I simultaneously hate/love Beautiful Boy 4/5
I haven't seen the movie unfortunately but I listened to the soundtrack the second it came out (because Timmy posted a lil snippet of Treasure by Sampha, which I was highly anticipating after seeing his preview). I loved the song, but it seemed a little bit rushed compared to the rest of the song. I totally agree with what you said about the soundtrack. All the songs are good individually but they're so different. For example, Bridge by Amon Tobin sounded like a Garageband default track, whereas Treasure by Sampha is dynamic has so much depth. So all together there's no flow whatsoever in terms of the soundtrack. Anyways, I hope I can see this movie soon. And your Timmy impression was spot on, it was kind of scary.
have to disagree with you on the whole “doesn’t do a lot make you care” honestly after watching it I can see the things that people my age are doing and rather than just blowing it off because it’s been so normalised to me, I now really see this topic in an entirely different light.
Timothee❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ oooffff that impression is literally Nick sheff 3:55 so true however as soon as i heard territorial pissing by nirvana i genuinely started screaming the lyrics lol The structure is a problem aswell tbh٫ my stupid ass couldn't keep up with the first act.
Pretty sure the music is the music that Nic Sheff was listening to. I used to listen to most of the music when I had drug issues so it really made sense to me.
just watched the film today and I was waiting till I finished it to watch this video! now i'm slightly disappointed to know that I missed something at the end of the credits :( I normally stay till its completely over but I was going to be late for an appointment so I left rip
I felt the same way! Acting great, scene jumping...not so much, music: the scene where Steve Carrell finds Timothee’s notebook was chilling and great, but the jazzy and french songs..ehhhh. Overall I gave it 4/4 stars though. Its a movie I could def watch again
beautiful film i loved it after i watched it bc while i watched it i was with friends and i wasn't focused. and as a big film fan i need to rewatch and truly appreciate the film. but, it was hard for me to see timothees character come through because i am such a big fan of timothee. but that's just my fault. coloring and cinematography always makes a film great for me.
so this movie is based on a novel written by and author who this actually happened too. that’s why some scenes seemed like they didn’t need to be there because they just wanted to tell the story of this awful thing that happened
You should read the book(s) this is based off of. They're based off real memoirs by Nic and David Sheff. Beautiful Boy is a book by the dad and Tweak is the book by the son. Tweak is a great book and a very gritty look at drug addiction. The books are much better than the movie based on them ended uo being. This movie is mainly based off the dads perspective but the sons perspective is much more interesting and they barely put any of what happened to the son in the movie.
that timmy impression is....... scarily good
His voice was almost perfect
His hair is also kinda similar to Timmy's new hair

this is my favorite thing that any one has ever said.
Robots is the og film
No film will ever be better than robots
Again your ability to stay impartial in your reviews and pick apart the film's flaws and strengths is impressive. If I find something wrong with a film I find it hard to say that I like it and that it's a good movie still.

Karsten is the only person I will accept to date Timmy.... other than myself

*“and uh...timmie”* i ship u too sO HARD

That Timmy impression is sooo good!! Lol. I had no idea how iconic Timothee’s mannerisms were until now!
As someone who had battled both a personal battle with addiction and watching others fight wars, this movie was pretty good. Some of the scenes were honestly hard to watch especially when it would bring back flashbacks… can definitely help show a bit more into that pair of shoes

you know im a sucker for some grain

SAME. I wanted to cry, but wasn't expecting THAT, I'm still crying
Karsten grew up as beautiful boy
Sure did.
I Watched it so many times I lost count !! And cried like a lot every time 😢
I was disappointed that we never got to really see how the addiction started.
Some people just start doing drugs because it was offered to them or they find it and want to try it
same here!! it just felt like it was lacking a lot from the addict’s pov
They purposely left that out because they wanted the movie to focus on the effects of drugs and how it's not always because of some big reason.
To me it's actually nice to see a movie tackle drug addiction without actually explaining the backstory, sometimes it just happens out of curiosity
The Timmy impression is so good 😮
that "I don't knoww" was SO accurate
man i loved how the music was used this is so crazy to me. its one of my favorite things about the movie! John Lennon, Tim Buckley, Pavlov's Dog, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Perry Como?!
Same. Some of the songs even made me cry harder
THE TIMMY IMPRESSION WAS INCREDIBLE
Holy shit that Timmy impression is perfection
omg how did u get timmy to appear in this video
I’ve only read David Sheff’s memoir Beautiful Boy and not Tweaked but it’s apparent music is very important to the story (given Nic’s somewhat idolization of Kurt Cobain and the title of the book/film) and how David refers back to songs and moments relating to music that were important to their relationship. That Timmy impression was eerily good. You brought out his tonality like a pro of some sort.
that was a fucking incredible impression whaT
Just by the way the whole flashback in the first act thing was probably because the first part of the book was all about nic growing up. And they probably didn’t want to actually make the first act nic growing up. Idk just some thoughts
The first 6 seconds of this video could be one of those weird vines that I like
Yo that impression was spot on
Litterly had to watch this in rehab loved it I've been sober for 12 hours
still sober?
oh my god your timothee impression 😩😩
the book is really stressful and in the dads perspective in the most painful way so im glad to hear it translated. cmbyn is my favorite movie of last year and the sound track was a big part of it so im sad to hear that
THE IMPRESSION IS ON POINT
I love the skit at the beginning JHAJSF
I don't know how you did it, but the Timmy impression is so spot on...
i just saw the movie and i agree that the first act was kinda messy but In My Humblest Of Opinions i kinda liked it bc when ive gone through difficult times in my life (although its nothing nearly as intense as whats going on in the movie) i like Reflect on my Wee self so to me thats what david and nic were doing but also i could've just been mesmerized by mr. timothee thank u for coming to my ted talk
where’s the john mulaney impression
SPOILER ALERT!!!!
It makes me really happy that the real Dave and Nic Sheff are icons for addiction recovery:) also Nic Sheff has been sober for 11 years now!
your timmy impression was so spot on what the hell

I see the Boni ver poster. A man of taste I see.
These intro / vine inspos are so good!! Thanks again Mr Funquist.
in the Netherlands the film is coming out in the 29th of November but its 16+ plus and I wanna goo bad. but my dad told me a trick that we could stil go in the cinema cause I want to see it asap

Love the 22, a million poster
Still, Steve Carell is the coolest dad
You have the most jacked brow muscle I've ever seen in my life my guy

omg your Timmy accent was so good
Best impression ever
i loved this book and can’t wait to watch the movie
Was that a Bon Iver 22 a Million poster in the background????
The timothee chalamet impression is so spot on
have to disagree with you on the whole “doesn’t do a lot make you care” honestly after watching it I can see the things that people my age are doing and rather than just blowing it off because it’s been so normalised to me, I now really see this topic in an entirely different light.
So you'd say "Beautiful boy" is better than "Mid 90's"?
Great review man. Thought you were spot on with everything!
Timotheé has the best hair! Change my mind!
Timothee❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
oooffff that impression is literally Nick sheff
3:55 so true however as soon as i heard territorial pissing by nirvana i genuinely started screaming the lyrics lol

the beginning is so accurate
I think the music variety was intended because "everything"
I felt the same way! Acting great, scene jumping...not so much, music: the scene where Steve Carrell finds Timothee’s notebook was chilling and great, but the jazzy and french songs..ehhhh. Overall I gave it 4/4 stars though. Its a movie I could def watch again

I really want to see that movie, but its not showing at the theater I live near in and I'm sad😭😭😭
my aesthetic "i'm a sucker for some grain"
The soundtrack is amazing. Zoomers are so curious.
Karsten in the future could you possibly review Boyhood ? Thank you
Te'Omarie Doty that movie suckkkeddd
That Bon Iver poster thooooo
i thought this was a sequel to CMBYN and that boy Timmy find another daddy.
YESS I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
THANK YOU 🙏🏼
even after watching this whole video, I FORGOT TO STAY AFTER THE CREDITS
Karsten grew up with drugs... wait.
Wrong reviewer... lol
Dude is a full blown Claritin addict. It's actually very sad. #PrayForRunquist
I'm cackling at that intro
Sorry if this is too simple, but I just plain loved your review. Intelligent, thoughtful, and honest. Consider me subscribed! Cheers!
so this movie is based on a novel written by and author who this actually happened too. that’s why some scenes seemed like they didn’t need to be there because they just wanted to tell the story of this awful thing that happened
*uploads obscure video about a move about a book my dad read when I was 16 because I was smoking weed, at 1 am*
You mad man
The beginning had me dead
The Bon Iver poster yeet
Timmy and Steve uggGHHHHH LOVE
I’m still waiting for beautiful boy to come out here in italy help
so i guess you can say that karsten is addicted to addictions
You should read the book(s) this is based off of. They're based off real memoirs by Nic and David Sheff. Beautiful Boy is a book by the dad and Tweak is the book by the son. Saw this movie yesterday. Thought it was fantastic
i was a meth addict. i agree with you point of view. im going to go watch this movie right now
calling a film “manipulative” is so silly. of course it is, stories are made to make you feel things.
I was just thinking about watching this! Thanks for reading my mind haha
