This guy who keeps getting composing jobs and has (probably) won awards for his music is under-rated?! Sorry to be annoying, but that sounds like not well known
@@peasant_mindset4505 Not very many people keep up with composer's now a days. When I was growing up most people would talk about John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Never once have heard someone who wasn't a movie snob mention Michael.
@@theywalkinguptoyouand4060 Maybe a better word is underappreciated. You have to understand that the large majority of the human population are not caring about who made the music in Super 8. No need to be a snob about it lol
@@maomekat2369 It's not funny because... something? Idk what I was going with this You just wasted your precious time on this planet finding out what was down here.
man between this and the video breaking down the tragic end of arrested development, it's so interesting to think about great shows that would have thrived in the binge-era but were cursed by the confines of cable
I may be 2 years late, but I wanna say that this video is what finally pushed me to watch this show. My mom was pregnant with me while it was airing, and she used to tell me about how my dad would watch it while she went to bed early cause I had her up all night as a baby. She would mention the show a lot, how it was innovative and worked with flashbacks and forward flashes, always making me interested in it, but I never actually tried to watch it until I watched this video. I’ve now successfully completed the show, and I can truly consider it one of my favorite shows of all time. Thank you, Danny, for opening me up to Lost again.
I’m so freaking happy that Drew addressed the underrated genius of Michael Giacchino. He explained the exact reasons why he’s my favorite composer. -he’s done the music for my favorite movies -he matches the music to the story -he uses really weird percussion instruments -he makes beautiful themes that adapt to the emotion of the scenes -he names movie tracks so ridiculously
It's so exciting to see someone with a big platform like Drew highlighting what makes him such a great composer! He's also my favorite composer and I don't think a lot of people make the connection that's he scored so many iconic film and tv soundtracks because he is a master at completely transforming his style to fit each piece. We should all start a Michael Giacchino fan club :)
Nothing beats a Drew Gooden "I want to talk about some random thing I like" video. He's got such a talent for showcasing something he feels passionate towards.
@@clarakf I'm sorry if it came off that way but I was merely trying to inform the commenter on the existence of Scott Cramer. I'm not saying that just because someone does something better it means that the other party is bad. I'm was just stating my opinion on a platform where I am free to do so. Again, not trying to make it a contest. Thank you for your time
At the bar a while back the bartender and I had been talking about our mutual love of Lost when she decided to put the show on. A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.
That first ep was great, no lie. Full of promise and wonder. Like a new romance...that becomes a co-dependent hellscape at the end. Filled with acrimony and feelings of betrayal. Yep.
Fun fact about John Williams music sounding kind of similar. The scene in Chamber of Secrets where Malfoy and Harry are chasing the snitch has the same score as the scene in Attack of the Clones where Anakin and Obiwan are chasing the bounty hunter. He was working on both movies at the same time and there was some kind of mix up, but you wouldn’t even notice cuz it fits both movies.
@@JaseekaRawr Eight months late but no he's not trolling. I actually was a big fan of both Harry Potter and Star Wars as a kid and watched them both enough times to notice. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone else call it out though. Still love John Williams.
the fact that a mainstreamed and produced show soundtrack has a song in it called something as stupid as “booneral” is brilliant and gives me hope for humankind.
Look up the title names in his other soundtracks. Almost every track is based on puns from what happens in the movie. Like he has a running gag where he calls a track "World's worst X" so the Venice action scene in Spiderman far from home is called "World's worst water feature" and the end fight in Mission impossible Ghost protocol is called "World worst parking valet"
in ratatouille the music under the montage with linguini and colette is called "colette shows him le ropes" fhdkghdhf pretty much all of his track names are like that. i respect him so much.
"Booneral" isnt even uncommon, the man the myth the legend of Giacchino has at least one fantastic song name per soundtrack (my favourite being End Creditouilles from that one rat movie)
You brought up something 99% of reviewers overlook: the composer. They truly make or break shows, and often times they’re the reason a show/film is SO memorable.
Well 99% of reviewers are STUPID lol. But seriously everything about Lost's score is perfect. The slow rhythmic sound of low string instruments that builds suspense. Then the almost swarming orchestra when our characters are fleeing from danger. The percussion using actual pieces of the plane wreckage. The use of oldies music throughout the series. And who could forget that sad, melancholic tune that plays during the more emotional scenes. We all know the one.
Manchester by the Sea could’ve been one of my favorite movies of all time but the score was SO awful that I could barely finish the movie. Everything else was perfect but a lack of a good composer/music supervisor wrecked it.
Yes! Part of why Riot's and Netflix's Arcane worked so well was because of the soundtrack, they put a lot of care in it. You can see the process on UA-cam, a documentary on one of Riot's channels. Much respect. Other cases would be How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda. They use the music to elevate the scenes, often staying on beat. I LOVE that kind of stuff.
I'm so glad you're giving some attention to scores and to Michael Giaccino. He's always coming up with interesting names for his tracks. The one in the Incredibles where Dash starts running from the guards is called "100 Mile Dash" and later on he would title a track in Ratatouille "100 Rat Dash". Another track in Ratatouille is called "Is it soup yet?" Which is an obscure line from the Goofy Movie. He also did the score for my favorite Disney ride, Space Mountain. Mad respect for this guy.
Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well. I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs
It is common, or at least it's common in films with good film scoring. Leitmotifs are like a third of the reason why characters and plots are compelling, because your brain subconsciously makes associations and recollections when it hears the same theme.
That’s why I love the How to Train Your Dragon soundtracks composed by John Powell. They’re full of leitmotifs, and they’re always evolving and blending in new ways! The music itself tells a story
Leitmotifs are basically standard at this point. There are almost always leitmotifs in some form or another in movie music. Pretty crazy to think that was basically nonexistent until Berlioz, Verdi, and Wagner.
It's an incredible thing in games when used right. The main title screen theme being incorporated to a final boss, or even having it persist through zones but each one bringing its own flavor to it.
I’m so happy when you were describing the soundtrack being emotional you put John Locke’s backstory. His backstory (and later this entire series) is the ONLY ever moment I’ve cried at a non-animated tv show. And i have to credit most of that to the soundtrack. Its so fucking heartbreaking to see a 40 something man sobbing about his dad while the most heartbreaking and emotional song you’ve ever heard is playing.
12:35 - "They somehow convinced ABC to spend an unheard of amount of money on the pilot." No, Drew. If they had spent that much money on a pilot, the plane would've never crashed.
One thing I love about Drew is he makes videos about topics he really enjoys, not necessarily what he thinks is most popular at the time. Like I've never seen Lost but I watched this video start to finish because he breaks it down so well and is so passionate about it. And now I want to binge Lost lol.
This!! The videos he makes are never about current trending things, just things he has a passion for or things that are on his mind. It's really refreshing to just have new, original content that no one else is also talking about
Lost was a stroke of genius. I don’t understand how someone can watch that entire show and not appreciate what the creators and writers were able to do
Started Lost a few weeks ago because of this video. Just finished the finale. One of the most beautiful, profound things I’ve ever seen that’s made me think about my outlook on life. Sounds dramatic but you’ll understand if you watch!
Lost is not profound! It is mystery box trash written by monkeys on typewriters. I watched this show beat for beat as it aired. I watched it again back to back on DVD to see if I just didn't get it but there is nothing to get. It's hollow key jangling all the way to that bad ending.
When I was growing up with limited television time and not fully developed comprehension skills, I thought Lost and Survivor were the same thing, and I thought that if you won Survivor you got to be a character on Lost.
I don’t think I ever made that mistake, but I do remember seeing ads for Lost in between episodes of Survivor, and that’s basically my only contact with the show. The one that tripped me up as a kid was the Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack, where I thought the Professor became Jack or something, I wasn’t super clear on the details.
Fun fact: the writers actually had no idea which characters were going to get screen time and many actors were left not knowing wether they would have prominent roles. The set was such a mess that the writers got Steve and Scott’s characters confused accidentally killing off the wrong one- hence why it was a running joke in the series I know this cause the actor who played Steve was my ex boyfriend’s dad and he talked extensively about this
@Darius Bostic This type of shit is why people can't stand Christians and nobody has problems with Sikhs. Keep your religion to yourself. We don't care. If we cared, we would be Christians.
@Darius Bostic I don't care about Jesus. I do care about pushing your beliefs on others. Nice try to disassemble my logic, but like most religious people, you don't understand basic logical thought patterns. You're the one posting unwanted proselytizing on a fucking youtube video that has nothing to do with religion. You really don't understand how absurd that makes you seem? I don't hate Jesus. The world is not made up of Jesus lovers and Jesus haters, as much as your black and white religion would love you to believe. The problem is, it's just not real. There has never been a concrete reason to believe in any religion. I think some of his teachings were pretty rad and how humans *should* treat each other. Modern Christianity is a bastardization of those teachings. I can lead a moral life without an outdated handbook, thanks.
I think that Charlie from LOST may genuinely be one of my favorite characters of all time. The first time I watched the show with my dad, I said to him “I like the way that he’s just so calm while everyone else is freaking out about the giant plane crash.” (little did I know he was on coke). While I know that he could be VERY weird and even more creepy at times, I always had a special place for him in my heart. I was heartbroken when he died and I still think that he’s a one of the best characters I’ve ever come across.
yes i love charlie! its no wonder why he was a fan favorite. he was so charming and charismatic and the way he left the show was so meaningful and important in the way that it moved the plot along
Michael Giaccino rightfully calls himself the nerd composer...cuz he's literally done so much that has defined modern pop culture. I love that you spotlighted him!!!
Lost was HUGE in ALL over the world. In almost every country. Here in Greece it was HUGE too! I remember I was watching this with my mom and even my dad who never watches TV saw it too. In fact a friend of mine who NEVER watches TV show this show too. LOST was so popular man!
Seeing as Riverdale is a thing that exists, I can no longer comfortably say any show has gone off the rails unless its reached Riverdale's level of absolute insanity.
Just watched a video about how batshit insane that show is after not wanting to watch it cause I was a fan of the original Archie, now I wish I could've watched that trainwreck from the beginning.
Man I appreciate the fuck out of Riverdale even tho I stopped watching long ago. Archie comics were my childhood and the adaption is actually awesome for what it is
There is a girl that did a video on this show which I have never watched, but after her video(which was hilarious) I realized I didn’t need to. I got all I needed.
Sooo glad you touched on the genius of Giacchino. One of the nicest people in the industry as well. Lost was one of the first soundtracks I remember being obsessed with.
Giacchino made so many memorable tracks, that it's ridiculous. His outro piece for the first Cloverfield movie, or the whole soundtrack for War for the Planet of the Apes - pure beauty. :D
he’s SUCH a good guy. i had the pleasure of working with him in a project at Sony, and he’s so collaborative and creative and totally unaware of his brilliance.
I've literally just finished watching Lost yesterday and I cried like a baby. The ending was definitely not what I was expecting but I still liked it very much. Seeing everybody happy and reunited was truly beautiful. Lost is definitely one of the best shows I've ever watched. It made me completely invested in the story from the episode one. The constant drama, mystery, theories makes you addicted. The plot itself was genius and everything was so thought of. It's truly amazing
I had the same relisation with Michael Giacchino, he's literally responsible for so much of my childhood favourites. I mean he's done literally everything from Disney/ Pixar to even the MCU's Spiderman. I had no idea he worked on Lost as well only makes me love both him and the show so much more.
I loved it so much but I didn’t like the ending at the time. But then I saw the Game of Thrones, and I realized how much better the ending was for Lost than I thought.
Same. I had trouble getting into it at first, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Watching it again, even knowing all the twists and turns (heck, _especially_ knowing them), is so much fun. Cannot recommend it enough.
12:15 I think you described here very well how I was able to enjoy the show a lot more than my teenage peers. I was part of an online forum dedicated to discussing LOST, so it was on my mind a lot between episodes and not just once per week. While I couldn't "binge" exactly, all the relevant facts stuck in my mind - or, if they didn't, someone would remind me about them within 36 hours after an episode.
The sidebar about Micheal Giacchino is everything I’ve ever been telling people about him, I watch movies just because he’s scoring them, which is why I will be in theaters to watch The Batman, even though I haven’t seen a single Batman/joker movie in my life.
I think he is extremely underrated but I honestly dont think he has done anything that comes close to his work on LOST. The variety and level on consistently amazing music is legendary
Thank god you talked about Michael Giacchino, he's such a great, diverse composer. He goes from an animated movie to a superhero film in mere months, it's absurd how great he is
Fun fact: a melody or phrase linked to a specific character or idea is called a leitmotif! Musicals do this all the time, especially the part where they transform leitmotifs to fit the changing narrative
I really appreciate how good Drew's captions are. Not all UA-camrs spend the time or money to get good captions and I think it really enhances his videos for people who prefer captions or people who need them!
@@penelopephelangeDo you seriously think that deaf people shouldn't use the 2nd most popular website? Can you imagine telling a deaf person, or an elderly person who uses hearing aids that they shouldn't use UA-cam?
Composers really need more credit, imagine Interstellar without Hans Zimmer's soundtrack, Up without the opening song, they would never be as memorable
True, on one hand you have mainstream music artists becoming some of the most wealthy and famous people in society, and yet cinematic composers that impact millions of childhoods go far more unnoticed.
Funny you bring Up, since it's the same composer from LOST (as well as Incredibles, most WWII Medal of Honor games, and the first CoD plus many major blockbusters)
The soundtrack comment is absolutely spot on, I don't think Twin Peaks would have such a recognisable atmosphere without Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack. Just hearing any of the tracks makes you feel like you're in Twin Peaks, and it does so much work establishing the setting and tone of the show. I can't even think of any of the scenes without the tracks playing along in my head.
I can't bring myself to finish lost, my dad introduced me to it last year during summer break, it was our little secret since my mom didn't want me to watch it. We would watch like 4 episodes a week during summer break and like 4 episodes a month during the school year. After my mom went to bed, my dad would come up to my bedroom and tell me to get the popcorn started with a grin on his face. It was always fun hanging out with him. But my dad passed away in December due to covid, it was crushing loss and very unexpected. I've tried to watch Lost since but I can't bring myself to do it because it reminds me of him. I miss him everyday (edit: just want to let yall know that I read the replies and your nice words mean alot to me. Thank you all for helping me through this past year)
As a long time adoring fan of the show since the pilot, I completely understand. I've felt that way about certain things also. Come back to it or leave it, if/when you're ready. ❤
I think Lost is something that everyone who appreciates the art of character building should watch. You start the first episode completely ambivalent towards everyone on the island but by the last episode you know more about them than they know themselves and feel VERY strongly towards most, if not all, of them
Ben Linus’ arc remains one of my favourites. He’s a messed up character but also tragic, I was pleased when he began working on redeeming himself and choosing himself and others over blind loyalty to Jacob

The music from Lost is so fantastic. Someone made a piano arrangement called "Six Years of Lost Music" and posted the PDF online. I printed it out in 2015 and whenever I come back to the piano, it's one of the first things I pick up.
Props for the Michael Giacchino tangent, I feel like not many people know just how many soundtracks he's done that they probably know at least a few of
I know I am very late, but I’m so happy to see someone protecting LOST. I learned about this series from my mom and I immediately fell in love with it. I feel like LOST is so forgotten and trashed on, so it’s amazing to someone finally giving it the credit it deserves.
I really like how Drew goes deep into, not only the show itself, but also the soundtrack and the performances of the actors. It really shows Drews love for movies, which I can greatly appreciate.

I’ve never seen *LOST* and originally never planned to. Because of this video of yours, I will now *GLADLY* watch it. Thank you for not spoiling the story while simultaneously explaining why I need to watch it!
@@TECfan1 I’ll compare the first season to the beginning of a roller coaster that launches you from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and you know, the rest of the roller coaster is fun too👉🏼but that beginning tho, whoosh! Same with Lost.
I've always wanted to watch the show, and because I love Mike's Mic (which he did a recap on the entire season), I started watching it this year and boy!!!! JUST FINISHED THE WHOLE SHOW LAST NIGHT AND I'M IN A "LOST" video essay rabbit hole!
I think the interesting thing about LOST is that it absolutely would've benefitted from being in a streaming age but at the same time the airing week-to-week and discourse absolutely helped build the interest and hype about the show. In a world where LOST dropped a season at a time onto Netflix it probably would've ultimately been better for the plot but simultaneously it would've been way more forgettable in the long run. Like, they did a whole-ass ARG (that I was super into) in between seasons 2 and 3 involving multiple websites, other companies working LOST stuff into their ads and websites, a podcast, and a bad paperback novel written for the express purpose of plugging the show. I can't imagine an original IP today doing that, even popular ones like Stranger Things. I _kind of_ think Disney's re-learning the power of generating hype for its shows by releasing them weekly... but then again the only things they've done that with so far are its Marvel and Star Wars shows and those are giant behemoths that will never die and not untested IPs at all.
I think HBO airing Game of Thrones weekly definitely helped its popularity; it kept people talking about it both in person and online for months at a time. Whereas when shows get released all at once on Netflix, they're talked about on social media for like a week and then fade into obscurity until the next season; they don't really have enduring cultural impact like something like Game of Thrones did.
The crazy thing about the ARG was how invested people were. I mean, to uncover the secrets in the later stage of the game you had to find glyphs all over the world. They could be in a shop window in Sydney, in Times Squarel, on a Korean website or in a park in London. And people jumped right into it. People talk about how big Game of Thrones was, and it's true - it was - but Lost fandom in 2005-2006 was insane.
@@RisingSunfish I watch him too! I’m an animation major so we dive into all that stuff and I love it. Thank you for the correction I can never think of the name
Lost was one of the only shows I remember ever airing last week's episode immediately before the new episode. The show was so big that ABC was willing to dedicate an hour of primetime to air a rerun.
I've never watched a single episode of lost but I was totally enthralled by this video. It also made me WANT to watch lost which isn't a train I expected to be catching this long after it ended. Not only that but the section on Michael Giacchino was great! I didn't know his name either which is an absolute crime since he's composed some of the soundtracks that affected me the most in my life! This is a seriously good video man
It’s sooo good but I did the same thing he did. End of season 4 I lost my love for it because it started getting WILD. Still an amazing show and I will finish it
I just finished this show and it WOWED ME. I always thought it was just an old, boring show that was only popular because they played reruns all the time. It’s incredible.
Decided to rewatch Lost after seeing this video and upon watching it a second time I became so invested in the characters that it was not uncommon for me to cry every episode, but with Michael Giacchino’s score - can ya blame me?
I’ve rewatched it 3 times now, it’s so damn good for the first 4 seasons. Locke, Desmond, and Sawyer have always been my favorites, I never liked Jack until the most recent rewatch where I realized he starts off normal but gradually loses his mind in a pretty realistic way.
Hey drew, when a composer associates a tune to a person or situation in a movie it’s called a leitmotif! It’s a wonderful way to tell the story through the music.
I literally took days to recover from the end of Lost. I watched it last year in full and after having some paradigm shifting psychedelic experiences this show hit soooo many DEEP levels. It's literally like a trippy symbolic show about life, our interconnectedness, synchronicity, purpose, meaning and cosmic significance. JJ Abrahms is one of my favourite writers of all time too❤
Beautifully summarised, Drew. I'm from Pakistan and LOST was my introduction to American television. I was blow. Away by the intricacies of the plot, the way the writers thought so far in the future. Absolutely loved the entire thing. The ending definitely came out of nowhere but it was so bittersweet. The entire final season was tragic in a way that showed that these people would still be "lost" in their lives even if the plane had not crashed. Thank you for doing this.
Learning about other cultures through film and literature is very interesting but in most cases, the country in question is much more boring and unattractive looking than media would suggest. Signed, a mediocre looking American eating an apple on the sofa with zero dramatic music
@@adrienneczerni6516 well they never said that American television reflects real life, I’m sure they know we’re not all living the plot of Lost everyday lol.
Yep I'm Also from Pakistan and Lost was the First US TV Show that Watched and fortunately Binged it cuz I watched it after 2010. It was suggested by an Urdu Columnist "Yasir Pirzada" in one of his Columns in Jung News Paper. So I did what most people from developing countries did; I searched for the torrent of the torrent of the Show and Downloaded all of the Seasons and watched all of it and Loved it! My Apologies for torrenting this show to the creators cuz this was the time when 1. I was broke Student 2. Netflix was Only Available in US 3. Internet was Luxury in the remote town where I was Living 4. There was No option for me to Legally watch the This Show
I'm from India, and I've had a similar experience. Lost was an international phenomenon. It changed how people saw television - a series as good as a feature film. My family would gather around to watch it at 9 pm. I was 12 when I watched it, I bonded with my dad over it - it just has a very special place in my heart.
Watching Drew’s videos these days is like hanging out with that one cool friend that makes a lot of really cool points and tells you all about some obscure thing you never even thought about. Love u drew
I've met Giacchino many times and been to a lot of his concerts. He is a great guy. Very funny and laid back. And of course an incredible composer. Thank you for talking about his genius and also the genius of LOST, which is one of my all-time favourite shows.
I was actually gonna make almost this exact video. Everybody dumps on Lost now, and nobody ever mentions how great so much of it was. The ending wasn't even that bad.
Sure, the ending was a bit iffy, but the character development and the flashback stuff, at least for the first few seasons, was honestly really good imo lol
@@Bendrix27 the ending wasn’t horrible and lazy just because you didn’t like it. Just say you didn’t like it. Millions of people loved the ending. Myself included.
I have never even considered watching Lost but honestly Drew is so well spoken and interesting that he could talk about paper for an hour and I would watch that
This has inspired me to do a long overdue rewatch. I freaking love Lost. I never understood the hate for the ending. I interpreted it as them being in limbo until they were all ready to finally move on together. It was an alternate reality, outside of time. I thought it was beautiful, and I bawled like a baby.
As a former band kid back in the late 2000s I am so glad you gave Michael Giacchino the appreciation and attention he DESERVES. He is one of my top 3 favorite tv/movie composers of all time.
John Williams gets 90% of the Credit when it comes to iconic film themes and scores, but I reckon Michael Giacchino and Alan Silvestri collectively have made as many icons, yet don’t receive nearly as much credit.
When he said they spent 14 million on the pilot, I completely thought he meant the actor that played the plane's pilot. Now, minutes later, I'm realizing I'm literally stupid.
I actually saw this as a joke just yesterday. Someone on Twitter wrote "Everyone keeps talking about how amazing Lost's pilot is, and he literally isn't, he crashed a plane!" I could tell you I didn't laugh so hard I cried, but I'd be lying to save face.
That mentality killed so many great shows, of course network executives don't care but show creators should have some artistic integrity and put their foot down
That was exactly the point that he was making in the video. He was saying that streaming services will end shows when the show should end, as opposed to when people stop watching the show.
I just binge watched lost for the first time ever like 3 months ago and this is my first time seeing this video. I can confidently say that this is my favorite and probably will be my favorite Tv show ever. The acting is very well thought out and executed, the scene are very high quality for the time. If you showed me and I had never looked into it. I would’ve thought it was shot in 2018
I decided to watch Lost because of this video. I just finished the show and was sobbing at the ending. Personally, I don't know how they could have made it more emotionally satisfying.
See, here's my theory. It was very Emotionally satisfying, for those of us for whom this was an emotional experience. Too many people watched LOST as an Intellectual experience, trying to uncover all the answers. And the finale wasn't logical. Island magic is the best answer we get. So people who wanted a real, clear answer were upset. LOST to me has always been about the characters and their relationships, not on the mystery. And the ending is very satisfying if that is your focus.
As an ancient and decrepit former Lost stan, it's interesting when you say the show needs to be binged to be appreciated. I actually think the drawn-out network schedule was part of the charm of being a fan back then, because it encouraged diehards to fill the gaps with tons of theories and speculation.
Agree. Maybe in 2021 this is a more reasonable take, but back in the days when the show was airing, there was definitely this feeling of the opposite. I'm not going to say that there's a right or a wrong way to watch the show but I personally feel like I would have lost a lot of what made the show great if I'd binged it.
Oh yeah, I don't think any streaming show could ever compare to Lost's experience. You watched it at that precise right time and it was it, if you lost it then it was up to you to find a rerun, then just spend the week theorising. Amazing
@@mollymcdade4031 Exactly... I honestly believe that once GRRM finally releases Winds of Winter the thousands of theories that have been flying around since the last book will get invalidated and fans will turn sour towards a franchise they spent a chunk of their life discussing. Even if the book ends up being genius, the most of the fun has been the theories.
Disclaimer: I've only seen a sporadic handful of episodes of Lost, buuuut, Drew has really become elite at what he does. Writing/vocabulary/word usage, explanations, assertions, cadence, insights, editing, mood establishment, humor (of course) etc... it really is masterfully done. This may be my favorite Drew tube vidja I've ever seen and idk shit about Lost
LOST is the reason I properly learned English. Back then, VOD wasn't really a thing and the dubbed version that was on German TV was.. not horrible, but I didn't find the voices fitting. Also it was behind a whole season and I had to avoid spoilers like crazy. So I did what everyone did back then and put on my Pirate hat and sailed along. I had to re-watch every episode at least two times (I didn't want to read subtitles, I hate subtitles, they're annoying and reading is for nerds anyway). And now here I am, able to understand every insult people throw at me on the internet. In two languages. Thank you LOST.
Finally someone giving Michael Giacchino the credit he deserves. Everyone know Hans Zimmer or John Williams, both are incredible composers. But Michael Giacchino has done so much incredible work and almost nobody knows him. My favorite piece by him is ‚The Kronos Wartet‘ from Star Trek Into Darkness, just plain awesome. I watched that movie three times in the cinema because the the soundtrack is so amazing.
i had a professor recently say that Lost is fantastic television, but the mystery and anticipation of things is way more compelling than actual answers, so nothing they ever could have come up with as the answers would live up to the hype of the anticipation.
The characters were always the best part of the show, the mystery element was secondary, so I didn't care if the answer to those mysteries weren't mindblowing.
@@bencarlson4300 It's an annoying misconception that JJ was behind Lost; he wasn't, he only worked on it for the beginning of Season 1 and had nothing to do with the show after that except for the first episode of Season 3. The showrunners were Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
I agree about them using unknown actors. The fact that i only recognised Dom Monaghan from LOTR and Elizabeth Mitchell from The Expanse, honestly confused me sometimes, i would forget their names and just call them Dom and Anna. No fault of the show, just drives home how effective fresh faces are at establishing a character
I actually got to see the music from LOST performed live at UCLA. Michael Giacchino did an official concert the week before the final episode aired. So it was meant to be a celebration of the entire series and a teaser for the finale. The shows creators and some of the actors went as well. Hearing all the music performed live with an orchestra gave me chills and is a memory ill never forget. It was also surreal to be apart of that moment, as Drew was right - at the time the show was a cultural phenomenon (very similar to Twin Peaks). Drew would have been in heaven, as the soundtrack was even more emotional live - and under the atmosphere of going into that final episode. While LOST was flawed due to the old network system (the writers were forced to make 25 + episodes a season which was ridiculous) - it’s still one of the best shows of all time.
None of the seasons were 25+ episodes. The longest season is the first and it's 25 episodes, even then it's paced pretty well and every episode feels important imo. Cool story though, the soundtrack is awesome and that concert must've been amazing
I'll be honest when Drew said 10 million on the pilot I was like "that's an awful lot of money for a character I assume died" took me a minute to go "oh yeah first episode".

-he matches the music to the story
-he uses really weird percussion instruments

-he names movie tracks so ridiculously
It's so exciting to see someone with a big platform like Drew highlighting what makes him such a great composer! Me ✋🏼
Still my favorite show to this day, ever since 4th grade
I love this show soo much I watched it 3 years ago and it is the greatest of all time ever
As a former Lost fan, my condolences to anyone that watches this now.
Idk about make or break lol
Manchester by the Sea could’ve been one of my favorite movies of all time but the score was SO awful that I could barely finish the movie. Everything else was perfect but a lack of a good composer/music supervisor wrecked it.
TWD has a fuckin’ banging score

My personal favorite is just a tiny touch on the credits of Inside Out: “Joy of the Credits”
Rogue one has my favorite score of his

I literally said "leitmotif" out loud when he started talking about them!
The way he said “They’re all kind if lost in their own ways” made me think that Kurtis Conner had possessed him for those 3 seconds

I feel really stupid now. I never noticed that each character had a theme song lol It has been like 5 years though since I binged the show.

I’ve always told people that Michael Giacchino is the reason we cry during Pixar films.
Lost has maybe the best score in TV history.
They did the weekly thing with the Mysterious Benedict Society and HSMTMTS as well
If only Lost came out during a time when streaming platforms were around lol
i think weekly on a streaming service would be a good middle ground

JJ Abrahms is one of my favourite writers of all time too❤
Abrams didn't write much of Lost, though.

The ending was absolutely horrible and lazy.
The biggest problem with Lost is that it doesn't have enough garlic in it.

This has inspired me to do a long overdue rewatch. I freaking love Lost. I never understood the hate for the ending.
SAME the Spider-Man homecoming soundtrack used to be my v i b e s when it came out! He’s so awesome! Totally underrated.

"You don't end shows that people are watching"
Netflix would like a word.
That mentality killed so many great shows, of course network executives don't care but show creators should have some artistic integrity and put their foot down
especially Fox
And that was exactly what he said. Networks would't do it, but Netflix does
*Cough cough* Kim's Convenience *Cough cough*
Where can we watch it?
Note to self.. watch lost
dont watch it if you have any standards or taste
See, here's my theory. It was very Emotionally satisfying, for those of us for whom this was an emotional experience. Too many people watched LOST as an Intellectual experience, trying to uncover all the answers. And the finale wasn't logical. Island magic is the best answer we get. So people who wanted a real, clear answer were upset. LOST to me has always been about the characters and their relationships, not on the mystery. And the ending is very satisfying if that is your focus.
@@imeanittoyou886 also hulu
As an ancient and decrepit former Lost stan, it's interesting when you say the show needs to be binged to be appreciated. I actually think the drawn-out network schedule was part of the charm of being a fan back then, because it encouraged diehards to fill the gaps with tons of theories and speculation.
Agree. Maybe in 2021 this is a more reasonable take, but back in the days when the show was airing, there was definitely this feeling of the opposite.
I'm not going to say that there's a right or a wrong way to watch the show but I personally feel like I would have lost a lot of what made the show great if I'd binged it.
What is your pfp from? I know I recognize it
Oh yeah, I don't think any streaming show could ever compare to Lost's experience. You watched it at that precise right time and it was it, if you lost it then it was up to you to find a rerun, then just spend the week theorising.
Amazing
But that was the doubles edged sword because the fan speculation helped people turn against it when things weren’t answered
@@mollymcdade4031
Exactly...

That’s the JJ Abrams element. The heart of that show is the characters
The characters were always the best part of the show, the mystery element was secondary, so I didn't care if the answer to those mysteries weren't mindblowing.
@@jackmayor3574 and my professor also said this is how you create a good story- through the characters. makes sense why he likes the show then.
@@jackmayor3574 lol no
@@bencarlson4300 It's an annoying misconception that JJ was behind Lost; he wasn't, he only worked on it for the beginning of Season 1 and had nothing to do with the show after that except for the first episode of Season 3. The showrunners were Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
I’m now adding Lost to my list of shows I’ve never actually watched before, but still have a lot of opinions on.
You didn't recognize Tauriel/Wasp?
That sounds magical! I had a similar experience with LOTR trilogy! I'll never forget it in my whole life
I would do anything to have seen that!
None of the seasons were 25+ episodes. The longest season is the first and it's 25 episodes, even then it's paced pretty well and every episode feels important imo. Cool story though, the soundtrack is awesome and that concert must've been amazing
How the hell did u get internet in the Plane of Euthymia
They spent all that money on the Pilot and he still couldn't fly the plane without crashing?
I JUST SPIT MY DRINK 🤣🤣🤣
I'll be honest when Drew said 10 million on the pilot I was like "that's an awful lot of money for a character I assume died" took me a minute to go "oh yeah first episode".
This is the funniest comment I've ever seen hahahaha
People like Drew because he is a source of genuine warmth in this cold world.
I keep coming back to this video over and over. I’m on season 4 and I no joke cried for about 3 straight episodes during one characters death.
