- Why buy a gift when you can make one, so I carved my folks a Labrador! I have always found carving dogs to be a good challenge, thankfully they are starting to get a bit easier! Carved out of Eastern White Cedar and roughly 16" tall, this was the smallest doggo I have carved yet! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Great things to come in 2024!

It’s so much harder then it looks! I do a lot of math and measurements though out the carving too keep me proportional to my references. I find dogs to be especially challenging. Just keep putting time and practice into it and you will get there :)

Might look into a stihl GTA 26 with an old cut down micro chain carving bar for doing quick tiny detail work. I love mine but make sure you get a few batteries.
Do you feel safe using those one handed pruner for carving? I have heard some scary things about them 😬 But I have never used one myself!

Excellent, will have to follow your step b y step on this and try and attempt to create one myself. Dogs are a hard one to carve i find!
Dogs are so hard! I don’t often do the silhouette method, I find it can make things harder for me sometimes, but with dogs I need to do it! Secret pro tip - I often use images of bronze statues for my references, they often highlight the bone/muscle structures and shadows better then real images can 😉

Dogs are quite difficult, one of the most challenging subjects for me besides humans!
