- After a quick start to corn planting, a breakdown on Kelly's sprayer bring things to a halt. Matt gives an in depth explanation of some of the planting technolgy he's utilizing with variable rate seeding and the benefits behind it. A sudden overnight rainstorm stops planting in its tracks but the crew at Griggs Farms is able to get back in the fields soon due to the covercrop still growing in the field.

DK 68-35 was my best yielding corn last year along with DK 66-06.
Ever thought about going to 30” on everything? Friend of ours put a kit in his picker and liked it a lot. I would say 38” rows would make it easier to get down the rows with equipment. He started just spraying across the rows at an angle instead of down them.
No I’m not going to 30” wide cotton. It would dramatically reduce our picking efficiency.

Hey non farmer here but how many’s bags does it take plant a acre
Corn is planted at an average of 27,000 seeds per acre. There are 80,000 seed in a bag.
Cotton is planted at 37,000 seeds per acre. There are 230,000 seed in a bag
Soybeans are planted at 130-140,000 seeds per acre. There are 140,000 seeds in a bag
Have you considered doing corn and beans on 20” row spacing and cotton at 40”? Or having two planters, one for cotton and one for corn and beans?
I considered 20/40” but with our hot, humid summers, there’s not enough air flow between corn rows on 20”. I’ve seen several years where narrow row corn burnt up here while wider rows did much better.
I would have 2 planters if I could afford 2 with the technology I use. Unfortunately, our farm is too small for it to be financially feasible. Yes I am losing out on a little yield with wide row corn but I’ve proven we can make some dang good yields regardless.

@@griggsfarmsllc I suppose it all comes down to capturing all available sunlight by the third week of June at summer solstice, or at least
95-97% of it. So, as long as the crop is able to "close the rows" by that time, all is in place for maximum yield potential of the crop.
Hey Matt I was just wondering so your able to plant in to the cover crop like that I thought you should role it first but you’re able to plant into it!?

Just because of cotton. I think 30” corn is the ideal spacing. Just can’t afford 2 different planters with all the technology.
I will say I much prefer working on tractors on 38” spacing though…
