  • With the combine fixed and dry weather finally here, wheat harvest can begin for real! However, Matt explains how the spring seeded crops have been permanently damaged and how he's going to proceed moving forward. Kelly has breakdowns with the planter and Matt shows the results of his test plots comparing no till to using cover crops.

Matt you guys are wet and we’re bone dry here on the eastern shore of md. The corn all looks like pineapples and some of the earliest stuff planted that isn’t irrigated has head spots out in it. I only have one pivot and the corn under it is head high and the dry corners are barely waste high. The poor soybeans are holding on but they’ve been about the same size for a month now. I just came off of a terrible wheat crop 60bu is what it averaged we had 30 plus inches of rain over the winter and a lot of it was underwater for a majority of that time. We’re leaving it in the lords hands but it sure is scary this is my second year farming on my own.

It seems as if farming has become all about surviving the extremes

Yep. Thought we were going to get planted early this year but that didnt work out. Middle april the ground was so hard the planter wouldnt even cover the seed then the rain came for 17 days. Did bet done just not when we wanted too. Stand kinda questionable too. Just cant shake the feeling im just not excited about the year this year. Hope your going to great. Just dont feel that way in mid tn.

I love the sound of an axial flow combine revving up when the threshing system is engaged. For the part where you were talking about making a decision if to fungicide your corn or not I hardly ever see anyone in my area here in Central Louisiana fungicide corn anymore. Instead they will top dress right when the corn fields just starts to make the first tassels some dry granules that look exactly like wheat seed, but I was told is ammonium sulfate.

80 bushel wheat will pay the banker back and let you enough to bay a 12 pack of beer

If your cover crop plots are holding their own on the ridges I would consider that a success. Just my thinking

I might not plant a grain of wheat next year getting too big and too hard get it all done especially with the weather being bipolar
