400 HP RevoTechnik Big Turbo Audi A3 2.0T - (Track) One Take

  • The Audi A3 is a fine car with the 2.0T powerplant (it's a dog with the 1.8), but it lives in the shadow of its bigger brothers, the S3 and RS3. RevoTechnik's IS38 big-turbo upgrade and the accompanying hardware make for a compelling argument when shopping for a used A3, but wanting more power and better handling for less than the price of a new S3. Making 400 HP at the crank, and backing it up with full suspension and big brakes, this A3 is a screamer on the track.

    Literally just bought this same car color and all. Its is a 2016 A3 2.0T Black Optics Package. It has (stock) a sport suspension, the S3 body kit, tinted tail lights, and 18 inch 5 spoke razor blade rimes. My build is as follows..... JB1 Piggyback Tuner on 93 octane, Powder Coat rims completely Satin Black, 45% tint, Tint out the yellow on the headlight (somehow), de-badge rear with the exception of the Audi badge, and possibly spacers if they don't look weird without the car being lowered. Should be around 310 HP and 370TQ on 93 octane, will ride like an Audi, and look mature yet sporty. All this is the reason I passed up on the STI, EVO, and S3. The Golf R though however seems to be the bargain if you can stand the Golf like characteristics, find a dealer that isn't trying to increase the MSRP, and find a dealer that has one in stock. The STI and EVO are too rough of a daily driver for me as for as ride quality and comfort. The S3 in my opinion is not worth that money as for 379.99 I now have performance that can surpass the S3, STI, and EVO. JB1 has been ordered, but 6/16 is estimated restock date.

    You have a fun job Matt. I'm looking at an a3 right now. I prefer the 2.0t 6mt because I do mostly slow city driving and I like to tear through the first few gears.
    I used to do concrete and asphalt work and one entire summer I spent in Chrysler proving grounds in Chelsea MI. They had a smaller track they called the handling coarse where they ran the srt cars all day. I'll never forget it. This one driver used to run at the very outer edge of the limit at all times. It was insane. There was shredded rubber all over the track when he was done. Coolest job in the world.

  • @jdcabauwnl
    @jdcabauwnl 8 років тому +2

    All awd cars rotate around the back end by lifting the gas. That is also why a awd is quicker with rallying. Lift the gas, steer in, when the nose points the right way step on the gas again and accelerate out of the corner. The Nissan GTR is all based on this principale combined with torque vectoring. You should have known this Matt :s

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 років тому +6

      No, not all AWD cars do that. Very few AWD road cars do that.

    • @jdcabauwnl
      @jdcabauwnl 8 років тому

      +TheSmokingTire Sorry I putt it in the wrong words and I apologise, an awd drivetrain tends to do it naturally but engineering of the wheelsuspension and geometry can cancel it out what they do for safety these days. Like instance the base model of this very Audi a3. If you stiffen everything up as springs and aspecially the roll bars brings back the notorious awd oversteer. It is not a bad thing, it even makes the laptimes lower. But nowadays the cars a conservative safe and you are right there Matt. The old Subaru, Audi had it.

    • @Prodriver33
      @Prodriver33 8 років тому +1

      +jdcabauwnl if you think that go drive any audi with AWD then go drive any subaru with AWD, not all AWD is the same dude.

    • @chrisg4rr377
      @chrisg4rr377 8 років тому

      +jdcabauwnl subarus have completely different awd as audis. most all wheel drives understeer like fuck from my experience

    •  8 років тому

      +jdcabauwnl uh, no. the only natural thing here is the transition of center of mass, when on and off the power and not AWD's "natural behavior". AWD works like you tell it to. In this care I think most of the torque goes to the front and mimics a sorted FWD car

    So, Revo tunes their suspension for the back to rotate? That's very cool. However on these cars I wouldn't go 19", seems overkill. I'd figure 18s with the same width are a better balance of looks, lightweight and comfort.

    Lack of confidence in high speed corners is caused by the steering (5 laps of the ring in a modded S3 have taught me this)

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  8 років тому +2

      +Daniel Kelly (Dandanfings) lack of confidence in high speed corners was caused by cold temperatures, summer tires, wet racing surface, and about 40 feet of wet grass then a tire wall.

    Looks like a great car. Why don't you like the 1.8T though? I drove one with the S-Line package (bigger wheels & sport suspension) and while it wasn't fast, it was quick enough to be fun on the street and I found it entertaining on back roads. Maybe we just have two different opinions of it, that said, a GTI is a much better buy for the money.

    It's a little hard to appreciate the speed from the roof camera perspective. In the future, would it be possible to move the inside sunroof camera to the speedometer for a video on a track like this?
    I don't feel that the angle above/behind you really adds to anything to the video, and it would be totally awesome to see those big speedo numbers on the long straights! As it stands, it makes these revo cars seem "slow" even though I know they are fast. It's all because of the camera perspective.

    Question for you gearheads: if you get bigger wheels with wider tires, do you need to upgrade your brakes?

    • @Pipitarutor
      @Pipitarutor 8 років тому +1

      +Arrtus TV If you put 22" wheels on your Austin mini, yes.

    • @jdcabauwnl
      @jdcabauwnl 8 років тому

      More grip, so more room for stopping power. You dont have to do it but it looks kinda silly with big wheels and tiny discs and beside this you want to use the extra gripp there is for braking or accelerating. And big wheels kill acceleration on a underpowerd car and deacceleration. So I would say yes but dont make your wheels to big because thing about unspring weight of the rim and the brake. Look at indycar or F1. Tiny fat wheels for the win.

    • @ArrtusMusic
      @ArrtusMusic 8 років тому

      jdcabauwnl Well, I have a Z that has 235/35/17 in the back and 225/35/17 in the front and I'm changing to 295/35/18 rear and 275/35/18 front. Do you think I'd be good with upgrading just rotors and pads?

    • @jdcabauwnl
      @jdcabauwnl 8 років тому

      +Arrtus TV The wheels are big :-| Dont.forget your tacho is going to be off. It is a option but if I was you I would invest in bigger brakes and wider wheels with the right offset.

    That's what happens when you use the same engine in a base model and an S model. You can easily tune it to the same power if not more. But - you don't get the nice seats and I'm sure there are other premium items you forgo. I'd take a GTI over an A3 and deff take a Golf R over an S3... simply for the manual option.
