550 HP Sleeper Turbo 2JZ Swap Lexus IS300 - One Take

  • I completely, unashamedly, LOVE the first-generation Lexus IS300. It's a clean design, with a simple-yet-durable interior, great build quality, and Lexus' reputation for reliability behind it. In the used market, we'll have a first-gen IS300 over an E36 or non-M E46 BMW any day of the week. But thanks to Toyota's Mix-n-Match supply chain, the "JDM Aristo" Turbo 2JZ Swap is fairly common among enthusiasts. Dan's IS300 is a total sleeper; completely stock on the outside, mostly stock on the inside, but under the hood is a 550 HP, single turbo 2JZ engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This is Dan's daily driver, which he has used as a commuter car for the last 2 years. We are insanely jealous.

      It really doesn't look dated at all, still a good looking car. Also that straight 6 toyota engine was pretty damn awesome, reminds me of my neighbors cressida way back in the day. If you ask me Toyota should never have abandoned that engine type.

    You can buy stock IS's for MUCH cheaper. I bought my fully stock , clean IS300 for 6500 with 90k miles and all services done. To do a GTE swap however does cost around 5-7k. To buy them already swapped can be found for ~8-10. I kinda feel like this guy overpaid for a 170k chassis.

    Matt, I've 40+ and have been enjoying your videos for the past 5 / 6 years. Great review. I also saw your is-f review a few months back.
    Time for a SERIOUS question! I own the 2010 Lexus IS-F (lsd) and find it great as a GT car or a car for long straights or grand bends vs a track with a lot of shorts and tight turns. In comparison to this is300-2jz-turbo, if the suspension was sorted out, ala camber, tie and castor, dampeners, springs and sway bars, do you think it would HANDLE AS WELLl as an IS-F?
    As a car is not only raw power, but the summation of how the power, chassis and steering all dance together to create enough entertainment for the driver to enjoy.
    The reason I ask is that I wouldn't mind buying an is300 and installing the arista set up with a decent suspension set up, but only if it would be more entertaining than the ISF or do you think it would just be a better value play?
    Thanks in advance for the feedback!
    note: the IS-F is my summer family car, s2000 turbo is my toy....I also own 4 other cars, but that's another story for another time.

    Love all your vids and this car is mint. I got my brother to get one of these as his first car as they are cheap now and so reliable and bullet-proof. On a different note is it possible for either the passengers to talk louder or have an external mic maybe? I'm not an expert and this is far from a complaint but i just find it hard to hear the passengers talking about their cars in most of the vids. Keep up the great work I'm a huge fan from Australia with an R32gtr, if you need some advice or tracking down parts with yours give me a yell :)

    I put a set of Bilstein HD's for my wife's IS300 and even with the stock springs it really improved the handling. Since Bilsteins use a separate perch, you could have a machine shop turn a "lower" grove in the body to get a reasonable drop without loosing the ride quality (except across the big bumps)

      @scottgoodson5132 6 років тому +2

      I know your comment was 7 months ago, but....I agree, $12K seems like a lot. But His already had the 2jz gte installed, in place of the original ge engine, and probably already had the manual swap done, as the car was originally auto. So considering the work (swaps) already done, $12K was probably not a bad price. Considering the price to add turbo to boost it, an awesome car for well under $20K, as I think the old IS is a really great looking car. Original early 2000’s IS 300’s in pretty good original cond are selling for $4K - $12K in my area, depending on mileage and condition.

      @TheSmokingTire  8 років тому +41

      +The Boss Big money. Like $75k or something. The car's probably worth that to the right buyer, just not to me. It's a '98 TT, triple black, with less than 20,000 miles and two engines, the stock one and a 1,000 HP one. He's had it "for sale" for like 3 years though. He just prices them really high, and if someone bites, he sells.

    • @alararkadas92111
      @alararkadas92111 8 років тому +7

      TheSmokingTire
      Didn't know it was such low mileage. In that case it sounds about right. The prices on Supra's have definitely been on the incline lately, but you are 100% correct - definitely for the right buyer.
      I think a lot of "top-shelf" Supra owners have that mentality. Honestly I'm guilty myself, asking $70k for mine. If it sells - it sells, if it doesn't, I'll continue to enjoy it for another 15+ years.
      Having said that, I do know someone who is looking for a '98 black on black original low-mile 6sp car, will pass on the info.
      Thank you for great videos. Enjoy them all.

    • @xXInsanePowerXx
      @xXInsanePowerXx 8 років тому +3

      +Marty Mcfly Williams I mean, the GTE has build cams, rods, valve springs, and the block is known to hold 800-900 reliably. The GE on the other hand blows around 330-400hp. Plus to build the GE is to basically turn it into a GTE since most people use the GTE block as a base anyways.

    • @emeraldages
      @emeraldages 8 років тому +1

      +Mellow Gaming It's just about the same before VVTI. VVTi models had smaller rods though. Replace those and you're good. The non vvti al you need is a GTE head gasket. Heads flow pretty similar. 2j doesn't hold 800-900 'reliably'. Lol.

    • @xXInsanePowerXx
      @xXInsanePowerXx 8 років тому

      +No well considering the stock turbos don't hold anymore than 17.4 psi you'd be correct. But a single turbo build and bigger injectors yeah, the GTE actually makes a ton of power reliably without a lot of money. Considering the record stock motor GTE (turbos and injectors aside) took 1080 whp before it blew.
