I'm Native (Navajo Tribe) and I love this song. Paints a true picture of the atrocities committed by both sides of the Indian Wars. Ironic though that when Natives were sent to school they were forced to give up their language but when WWII came a code was developed using Navajo and a few other languages. This code was instrumental in the US winning the war. Watch the movie "Code Talkers" to get a sense of what happened. It's not 100% accurate but it's close. My uncle was one of the Navajo Code Talkers.
At least you Dinètah got to keep your ancestral lands (mostly). Try being Shawnee or Cherokee. Oh, by the way, ahéhee'.

I'm native (Blood Tribe, Blackfoot Nation) Skins all across this land can relate to this song. It's very touching, how iron Maiden tells a story in 6 minutes of the power of Greed, and extreme prejudice.
Iron Maiden are an educational band. They write songs about history, classic literature, and mythology. I used to sit and research Maiden songs in an encyclopedia and I would get books from the library on the subjects they sing about. I learned more from Maiden than I learned in high school. The lyrics in Run to the Hills are dark because the story is real. Maiden makes you think. You should check out Ryme of the Ancient Mariner and also read the original poem for yourself. You'll love it because it plays out like a killer horror movie and the poem was written back in the 1400s!

These things used to be primarily taught through songs, poems and stories for the majority of European history. Even the story of the Trojan War and the voyages of Odysseus were originally sung to their audiences

The important thing to know about songs like these is that just because they're about historical atrocities like these, it doesn't mean they are supporting them. Most of the time, it's calling out the atrocities for their evil.
This song is simply about the colonisation of America by Europeans and the Indian wars between the Native Americans and the American Cavalry. The song switches between the perspectives of both.
Note : he mentions the Cree Indians in this song, they lived in what is now Canada,
Often metal lyrics are intellectually deep, so many of these people reacting don't seem to catch that initially. I hope they actually read the comments. It's a lot to take in.

When you were comparing Bruce's lyrics to rap and then about the genocide. Understand that Bruce is a professor, fencer, pilot and singer. Multi talented to say the least. If you want a history lesson, check out Alexander the Great 👍 or if you want to empress your English professor, Rime of the Ancient Marineer. Bruce also overcame throat cancer surgery and still wails. 🤘

Steve Harris (bass) of Iron Maiden wrote 'Run to the hills' from the perspective from BOTH the native Americans and the 'cowboys' fighting each other in America... the video used old silent comedy movies of Buster Keaton.
The single 'Run to the hills' was a huge success for Maiden in 1982, cos it introduced a new singer Bruce Dickinson, who replaced the previous singer Paul Di'Anno after 2 albums... Iron Maiden had some success, but by 1981, they couldn't carry on w/ Di'Anno as their vocalist AND they were out of songs!
So they recruited Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson and had to write a new album as well... that became their 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982... They wanted a single out to introduce Dickinson as their new singer & picked 'Run to the hills' also to promote a European tour... The single was a hit in Europe and the album went to #1 on the UK charts and was a huge hit in the US, Asia and Australia.

Iron Maiden teaching history one song at a time
Back in the 1980's, I heard Iron Maiden on the radio only once. This band was absolutely hated by the establishment. Iron Maiden is all dark stuff. The music itself is fairly simple, but the pace never lets up, and the guitar solos are very well thought out.

I've seen Iron Maiden live, they're really good, and you were 100 correct, this is about genocide of the Native Americans, but yes, surprisingly upbeat. Maiden always picks topics you won't hear many other places. You should check out Number of the Beast if you really want to hear Bruce's vocal range. But I have to plug Powerslave, that's one of my favs and one of the only songs about Egyptian Mythology you'll ever hear. :0

Older mixed Blood Native from Canada in the 80s and 90s Iron Maiden had a dedicated native following Thousands from all over would come to their shows. I remember one concert Bruce brought a bunch of natives on stage to sing "run to the hills with him" and yes it's about our death . BUT they also tells it from our prospective as well, which in those days was extremely rare.

This was one of the first songs that really brought that dark part of history to the forefront, The first half is the Native perspective and the second half is the Invaders perspective. Sadly the genocide still continues because of religion. They are digging up thousands of graves of Native children who were sent into the Catholic school system to never return home. It is because of atrocities like this that proves Mankind's only hope is extinction. Every other life form deserves to survive before Us.

The difference to rap is that these guys are really really proficient on their instruments. Yeah, he's "rapping" at the beginning, but underneath that is some really skillful guitar playing that you completely ignored.
He didn't ignore it. He mentioned the guitar solo and then talked about the guitar rift and it's placement in the song. Did you not watch the video in it's entirety? All he was saying in the beginning of the reaction that there are some real similarities to this song and rap. And he isn't wrong.

This song came out when I was 11, now I'm 50. Bruce's voice is four octave and it is awesome to see younger people checking it out and loving it. Iron Maiden has always been about anti war and anti hate, they sing these songs so younger generations don't lose sight that this world progressed by other people's misery at the hands of evil. I appreciate you young man and when I was your age even though I was a metal head I loved Run DMC and the Beastie Boys.

The "heavy metal" from the 80's is great, well written music played by truly talented artist, much like the hip hop amd rap ftom that same era.
I've heard some local freestyle rappers rap rock songs and it still works.

His enunciation is really good when he sings which I think is what makes it sound a little like he’s speaking the words. It’s just you can hear them so clearly, even when he is singing at really high registers. He is an amazing singer, he’s got lungs made of titanium lol
Bruce Dickinson (the singer here) is not rapping. (LOL) Just because something rhymes doesn't automatically make it a rap lyric. This guy can sing and carry a note (extremely well), most rappers cannot - they kind of just speak with emphasis on words.

There is no comparison to Iron Maiden and rap. Iron Maiden are musicians and Bruce is a singer. Real instruments are being played. This is music. Rap is in no way anywhere near the caliber of this music or any other music. The only connection between rap and real music is rap samples many rock songs. So if you ever hear good music being sampled in a rap song, rest assured the rapper did not have any part of the creation of it.

Elton John didn't write his own lyrics; Bernie Taupin did. Meatloaf didn't write his songs; Jim Steinman did. Geddy Lee didn't write the lyrics to Rush's later stuff; Neil Peart did. It's all collaborative, regardless of the genre. Disparaging an artist's work because they only contributed lyrics to it is ridiculous.

It's really not Rap because it uses melody. Rap is rhythmic but absent of vocal melody.

@@iluvevin Modern Rap is highly blended with Hip Hop which does tend to use melody in vocals. Stuff like Drake and Lil Nas X are examples of such blends. But Rap alone isn't simply vocals that ride a rhythm as rhythm has always been an important part of vocals for centuries.

Hey JoJo..great reaction! For this song...You definitely need to read the lyrics. It is a heavy song...despite how lit it is. "White man came across the sea. He brought us pain and misery.(Meaning: Indigenous American's/Native American's-the rightful inhabitants of this land). They killed our tribes, they killed our creed. He took our game for his own need......& so on.... Worth a re-listen..perhaps with a lyric video. I was lucky enough to see Iron Maiden twice in concert. Once in high school..I was 15. They played with Anthrax. Then again when I was 24. They played with Judas Priest & Queensryche. On our way in to the concert...I was stopped by a roadie or security for Iron Maiden (idk?) & asked if I wanted to be on stage during the show for a particular song (forget which one..haha I'm getting old, lol) I'd join a few other women that were also asked and we'd have to wear white togas and surround Bruce who was in a cage all while groping at the cage, haha... as if adoring him like he was a God...it was hilarious, but awesome, tbh. Silly me decided against it. Didn't want to leave my friends and I was too darn shy to be on stage groping at the very famous Bruce Dickinson in front of a huge audience of strangers. No way! LOL I somewhat regret it, honestly. Nonetheless...I had a great time & was super flattered they even asked me & thought I was attractive enough to be on stage groping at Bruce Dickinson (I was young and more attractive than I realized at the time..& I did look damn hot that night..now that I think about it, haha)! I could have been backstage and probtably could have met them all..maybe even Rob Halford & Geoff Tate,,,as well as the other very talented band members. ::SIGH:: Cool memory to look back on, even though I chose to watch the concert from the audience with friends. Was a Fantastic show with 3 incredibly talented vocalists in metal~ : )

Iron Maiden tells stories and they love the plight of the american indian aka native american. This was their first song going into that story. They were outnumbered and outgunned. So, running to the hills was the only option. So, it was kind of a love story, the love story of what they went through! Iron Maiden loves native americans and if you go through their album lists you'll see them sing about things that they went through and believed!

It's my favourite Maiden song, awesome to see you getting into it, dude.
The lyrics are important but your focus always seems to be on the instruments more than anything else. You have the lyrics pulled up for every song reaction you do, but are always questioning what they're saying or questioning what the meaning is. Maybe you should look into it ahead of time so the song(s) will mean more and make more sense.

The closest Iron Maiden ever came to a “hit” single.
"Wicker Man" got quite a bit of airplay, relative to most Maiden songs. I recall, at the time, so-called rock stations would only play "Run to the Hills" or "Wicker Man" if you requested Maiden. I want to say that "Wasted Years" was a pretty solid single as well.

I never realized this song is about genocide for the natives. I thought it was about real evil making us run for the hills since the cover of the album has satan on it. I'm part Cherokee indian. So, this song is different now. And, I never thought about how it sounds like rapping. I'll never look at rock music the same.
What the Americans did to the Natives is arguably the greatest shame and most heinous crime they have ever visited on anyone :( My own ancestors weren't part of it, but still I feel that anyone with Native blood has more legitimate right to be in the Americas than I do.

Then you have every right to live here. 🤷♂️ Can't believe people have such shame and regret over something they never even did. 🤦♂️ Leave that to the people who were actually guilty. They're all dead, so who really cares? Besides, almost everyone has Cherokee blood in them. I'm white and have it, same for my girlfriend, and I know several black people who are part Cherokee. Race is not as black and white as you may think.
@@nckhed An interestingly large number of people who claim to have Cherokee blood actually have Choctaw blood, instead. Of course, in my book, any Native blood is cool. I've always been fascinated and impressed by several aspects of Native American cultures. I love the legend that a Welsh prince led an expedition that brought them to North America, and that they integrated with the now extinct Mandan tribe.
