Hello
You're the man knox
Definitely check out Run To The Hills, Fear Of The Dark, and/Number of The Beast all by Iron Maiden
World war me by king iso please
Fear of the dark live at Rock in Rio 2001 by Iron Maiden fantastic live performance
Written by bassist and founding-member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War, and inspired by Lord Tennyson's 1854 poem of the same name.
Steve Harris is a metal god!
💯
Nailed it! ⚔️
He got there around the 11:00 mark 👍😂
@@genxhippie3973 Yeah I noticed haha! Pretty sure I wrote this about 4 minutes in 🤣
Metal Mondays has quickly become one of my favorite days of the week! 🤘
Pretty cool that multiple reactors do them as well haha
@@KarlOlofsson Absolutely! I love when reactors that prefer 1 genre venture out to other genres :)
But recently I don't see any metal reactions from him...like almost past 2 months.
How dope is it that nox, not only got the correct war, based on context clues, but also the poem this song is based on right, just by listening to the song.
Seriously impressive
I was thinking the same thing If he was not reading that when he was looking down. He got a subscribe out of me for that one.
Jaw is still open. Absoluteky crazy.
blew my mind that he knew all that and picked it all up from just the lyrics
And the history buff shines through.
The song's describing an actual battle-- The Charge Of The Light Brigade, October 25, 1854. A communication breakdown led to a British light cavalry unit charging straight into Russian heavy artillery. The song is inspired by Tennyson's poem-- "Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do or die, Into the valley of death rode the 600."
its why i think the version people should react to is off thedeath on the road live album where Bruce opens with the 1st stanza of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Tennison
Iron maiden the history teachers of metal, so many of their songs are based around historical events and famous stories or poems it's sooo good
You would love Sabaton. They are a powermetal band that sings about historical events. They are amazing and with your knowledge of history, you will appreciate them a lot.
Primo Victoria is a classic
40:1 and Bismarck are pretty amazing.
There are 3 videos from them that you HAVE to watch the animated version because it animates the actual history and they add so much to the song. These are night witches, No Bullets Fly and the Red Baron).
No Bullets Fly specifically is probably the best to react to because there is a little secret at the end
I would love see him react to any sabaton. i was just thinking it might be up his alley.
40:1
Is fakking fantastic.
Primo Victoria is not AS impressive musically but makes up for it in grandness, Its truly epic.
Resist and Bite is an underrated song.
I'd actually suggest something newer like Father, The Last Stand, Resist and Bite or Night Witches
I'm not sure he's ready for Sabaton, but I'd love to see it!
ABSOLUTELY. FIELDS OF VERDUN and Christmas truce, en livstid I Krieg absolute bangers well almost all of their songs r bangers lol.
Pantera - Domination(for the live video and the musicality and epicness of the one and only Dimebag Darrell) or Cemetery Gates(for the lyrics)
Or even more Iron Maiden with Hallowed be thy name! Loving the metal Monday's brother!
Just don't do the official video for Cemetery Gates
I think he'd also like the lyrical journey of Maiden's Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
I’ve been mentioning Domination for weeks now, Knox is gonna be blown away, can’t wait
Cemetery Gates is a MUST - but make sure you listen to the full version! (The music video cuts it right down...)
Hollow would be a great one too
@@j.v.7451 Mouth for War as well
I passed many history tests in high school back in the day thanks to Iron Maiden. 😂 If you do another Maiden song it should be a live performance. Just so you can see these guys that are now in their 60's still bring the same energy as they did in the 80's!! UP THE IRONS
Good choice, this song is great. If you wanna keep going down this Maiden road, definitely would like to hear your reaction to Number of the Beast
i love Number of the Beast, that is one of their greatest hits
He should do Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Really give him something to sink his teeth in. 😂
Besides being the lead singer of Iron Maiden, Bruce is an airline pilot, opera singer, radio show host, historian, television presenter, fencer, producer, novelist, and songwriter. He also flies the and around the world in thier very own 747 that can fit all the tour gear on board the plane they call Maiden 1. They also have a 9ft tall walkng Eddie thier mascot that joins them on stage.... also Maiden is one of the only bands ever to set the beat to the bass guitar in somesongs rather then the drummer.... the fact Bruce does operah is why he can hit and maintain those long drawn out lyrics. Maiden also has the distiction of being one of only a few bands to ever feature Vincent Price voice in the song intro for Number of the Beast
fyi the voice was done by Barry clayton. price turned the band down when they asked him.
Ed Force 1
Also the music video for Number of the Beast starred one Graham Chapman of Monty Python fame
I believe Bruce gave up his pilots license to do the tour. Not sure what that was about or why it had to do with anything but that's what I heard. It may have to do with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), commercial pilots have to retire at age 65. Although, I think Bruce is 64. There is currently no maximum age limit for being a private pilot or for being an Air Force pilot.
@@danbielefeldt4727 @Steven Laurin Dan beat me to it, but the correct moniker for their jet is "Ed Force 1", just for clarification for those such as Knox who are experiencing Maiden for the first time 😉
Steve Harris is easily one of the best song writers ever. And definitely the best bassist in metal music history, imo.
No better description than the one made by a French General that witnessed it 'C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre; c'est de la folie' ('It's magnificent, but it's not war; it's madness')
Steve Harris is definitely one of the best songwriters in heavy metal. Their songs aren't just songs about something...they tell a story. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner or Paschendale should be next😉🤘🏼
Hell. Yes.
I love 'Rime' and always recommend it to people, but 'Paschendale' is at *least* as good. 🤘😎👍
...I just always forget how to spell it. 😂
Hallowed Be Thy Name as well
As a history fan you will LOVE Iron Maiden. All their songs tell stories from history and poetry. Listen to their Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and be thoroughly absorbed. I'm loving your metal mondays and truly appreciate your insights and knowledge which only seem to make the impact of these songs all the more poignant.
Bruce Dickensen is an amazing human. Such a rock star and role model. Cancer survivor, pilot, singer, and much more.
You should react to Opeth - Ghost of perdition live :)
Love from Canada knox. Loving the metal mondays. Its so deep and powerful.
Up the Irons! Can't go wrong with any of their songs. Most will tell you to do the live version only so you can see the energy and crowd interaction. Great reaction!
many 80's kids got so happy after they master that guitar riff!
Absolutely blown away by the fact you nailed the war and influence for the song. Bravo.
Loving these Metal Mondays. Iron Maiden is one of the greatest bands ever. A lot of heavy metal focuses on history and events from the past. The Trooper is one of my favorites by them. Good choice. Have a good week, Knox.
The official music video of this song actually uses bits of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" over top a silent film
EPIC timeless band!!🔥🤟
Have a great week Knox!
One of the best parts about the hook of the song is when they perform it live, the crowd always does it during a part of the song where Bruce doesn't do it, but it's always done so powerfully, that you wouldn't question it.
I saw Iron Maiden live a little over a month ago and man they still have it after being in the game for over 40 years now. This song was their closer and it couldn't have been more surreal
"Hallowed Be Thy Name" is a great one too, among so many good Maiden songs.
I love some Iron Maiden, so much story telling and history in their music. Pascendale (spelling), Dance of Death, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner are some of my favorites just to name a few
I'm really impressed you managed to figure out not only the war the song is about but also the actual battle it takes place in great job, dude!
If you like history, you'll love Sabaton. Their whole thing is that they're all about history.
This is the most perceptive reaction to this song on UA-cam… I salute you!
I must admit, I almost tear up every time I hear this song. My favourite Iron Maiden song.
You might want to check out Blind Guardian "and then there was silence" or Nightwish "Ghost love score"
Iron Maiden Less Goo!!! Do “Holy Wars The punishment Due” by Megadeth!
Dude I love your energy and ability to appreciate the genre. Merry Christmas, Knox.
Iron maiden run to the hills is awesome
If doing another maiden song I’d love to see ‘Hallowed by thy name’ ❤
Thank you so much for posting this on my birthday man!!! Love the vid
Paschendale is a must now. As for other amazing storytelling war songs, The Devil to Pay by Iced Earth is probably the best I've ever heard
I'm Soo happy to be here so early 😩 this man is a blessing
I instantly tapped this notification cause this is a banger and this was a fire video
Really enjoying your metal Monday. Love your interest in metal lyrics, your helping break the stigma 🤘
I've been waiting for this
Knox love your show. Your analysis is so tight and spot on. Keep it up brother and merry christmas. Metal mondays kick ass
I was fortunate enough to see them live this year. Easily, best show I've seen, theatrics and skill.
A lot of their music was based on history and literature. I've read many books from their discography.
I was quite surprised just how well educated you were, being able to identify the war and literature it is based of. Hats of to you
Same I saw them in Salt Lake City in September they have been my favorite band since Number of the Beast came out
Knox…..this is truly well done! Love your Metal Mondays reviews. AWESOME STUFF! 💪👍👏🎸
I'm loving Metal Monday's! Iron Maiden's music always gives you a history lesson or is based on English literature. Another band I think you would love the lyricism of is The Warning. They aren't a metal band cuz they are more hard rock but their lyrics are always thought provoking. They are 3 sister's from Mexico that write most of their music in English but they have 2 songs in Spanish and their concept album, Queen of the Murder Scene, is an absolute masterpiece that tells a tragic love story.
‘What was the poem?… “Charge of the Light Brigade”… by Tennyson?’
Dude, I am super impressed.
Seeing them live was definitely a bucket list item, and worth every cent.
Loving Metal Mondays! 🤘🥰
If you like history and warfare, react to Sabaton, a swedish metal band that write songs about historical moments in war. They are great ( and I do not say that just because I am swedish, they really are 😀 )
Sabaton is great indeed, though based where are you from song you like the most will differ. As Pole I have 2 or 3 favourite ;)
@@jutrzenka7503 40-1? Great song. As a swede my favorite is En livstid i krig.
Yeah, they're really good, in spite of being Swedish... Coming from a Dane ofcourse ;)
@@tohasim9159 you guys speak funny but we like you anyway 😀
@@tuijakantola6550 yeah! But my 5 y.o. daughter prefers Winged Hussars.
One of my favourite bands of all time hope to see you do more of them!
Growing up a metal/skate punk and hip hop head in the 80s and 90s music taught me more and inspired me to learn more than any school or teacher ever has. Knox has continued this with his own music and breakdown of others music to this day.
Knox Hill - you are music fan certified
Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of my absolute favorites from Iron Maiden, but I love the Cradle of Filth cover of it even more.
I love how you actually listen to the lyrics. No too many reaction videos out there do that. They tend to focus more on the music, which is important of course, but the lyrics are just as important IMHO. Great job, as always!
3rd video i've seen by you know and i already love you man!! extra points for not pausing at the guitar solo :D
I've been listening to Iron Maiden since 1982, at the age of 15. This song is a great song of Iron Maiden's. Many of their songs are about historical events.
This one was based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the the Crimean War. Up the Irons!
Iron Maiden is:

Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 70 years), 1982 - present
The next songs I'd recommend are:
Iron Maiden -- Phantom of the Opera (Live at the Rainbow 1980 - with first singer Paul DiAnno, Fear of the Dark (Rock in Rio 2001), Rime of the Ancient Mariner(Rock in Rio 2001), The Clansman - Rock In Rio 2001, as well as the ones listed below.
Skip any songs you have already done.
Highlight of songs I'd recommend are:
From Iron Maiden------
Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version
Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden)
From Killers ------
Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder) ***You have done
Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming)
Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive)
Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer)
Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible)
Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem)
Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings)
From The Number of the Beast------
Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion)
The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s)
22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot)
The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2)
Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading white soldiers)
Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) * Do this song live at Hammersmith 1982
From Piece of Mind------
Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps
Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God)
Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus)
The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War)
To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert)
From Powerslave------
Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII)
2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World
Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner)
Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain)
Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage)
From Somewhere in Time-------
Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted)
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film
Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great
From 7th Son of a 7th Son (a concept album)------
Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares)
The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated)
The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers)
From Fear of the Dark------
Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad)
Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one)
From Brave New World------
The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us)
Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death)
Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley)
Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams)
Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet)
From Dance of Death------
No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation)
Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance)
Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI)
From A Matter of Life and Death------
Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age)
The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion)
Out of the Shadows (About being born)
You might like "Price of a mile" by Sabaton if you like war songs!
It's not one of their most famous or deep or anyhting, but it's really emotional because the song is about how many people need to die in a war for a single mile of land.
I love this song.
Or Passchendaele to keep the Maiden theme going. absolutly live version of bpth Trooper and Passschadle that open up with with the Poem's that inspired them
Love these metal Monday’s! Can’t wait to see what you’ll be hearing next.
Knox, great breakdown, love metal Mondays, Iron Maiden is my all time favorite metal band I've been hoping you were going to do them. Excellent job as usual, looking forward to future breakdowns.
That you, at the end, got the war and poem correct, really raised my respect for you and earned you a sub. Well done, sir. I'll definately watch more of your stuff.
I first heard this song as a kid and it's fascinating to see how someone much older appreciates the song in a completely different way. You made me notice things that I took for granted with your perspective. Great video. Welcome to team Maiden.
Hoping you do more Iron Maiden in the future. They do consider themselves a live band and the energy in their performances are top tier. Definitely check out live performances in the future rather than studio!
I like the way your able to dissect a song...there are soo many Iron Maiden songs, but The Number of The Beast is a great one to do. Also I am impressed with your memory of history.
We need multiple videos per day for metal Monday! There is so much great metal music out there and if you're doing one video per day you'll miss out on so much fantastic music
Greatly enjoying Metal Mondays! Iron Maiden is an incredibly influential band. Many newer bands wear the influence on their sleeves, like Sabaton and Unleash the Archers. Really looking forward to the inevitable reaction to “Awakening” by Unleash the Archers. I promise, you will not regret it.
This song is about the Charge of the Light Brigade. I’m sure some others have already said that but I couldn’t sleep if I didn’t say it. I’m an 80’s teenager and Iron Maiden got me thru a history lesson or two.
To further explore Iron Maiden, I highly recommend any live videos. Their energy on stage is incredible. For a truly epic performance based on another historic poem try The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
Damn, this was a great breakdown even figuring out the war and the poem it was based off of.
Your insight on music and lyrics is impressive.
Nice reaction my man, you know your history and you are absolutely spot on with your analysis 👍.
Well done with your history! I enjoy seeing your reaction to the soundtrack of adolescence. Up the Irons!
This song is one of my faves, it kicks ass live too. They really capture the picture from Charge of the Light Brigade.
If you listen to Aces High, you'll feel the actual adrenaline of a fighter pilot too.
The trooper ale is amazing! What a song
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner is definately my favorite by Iron Maiden.
This is one of my favourite Maiden songs. The reason I like your channell is the level of analysis, most reactions don't have that. I really, really appreciate it.
Knox, you never cease to amaze me, bro. Great reaction. Wish I could take you back with me to go to an early concert!! Maiden has its own signature sound. They are OGs, for sure. ❤
I fucking love Metal Mondays! After work, roll one up and watch you have fun with a new genre of music. Music is the best.
Iron Maiden, Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Brilliant adaptation of the poem.
Gotta say that if you like history and story telling then Sabaton have to be on your list. They're like the spiritual successors to Maiden with a modern twist, and almost all their songs are based on wars or specific battles throughout history. They're epic.
Thank for always “getting it” Knox. First time hearing Iron Maiden and you just get it.
Knpx, you have better insights than almost every other reactor out there. Keep it up!
The galloping horse sound is the bass🤣 their bassist Steve Harris is known for that, pretty much all his basstracks have that sound. He’s the main founder of IM and writes most of their material- what he says goes
Fuckin Metal Mondays! Yes! You can never go wrong with some Iron Maiden!!! They’re living legends and the metal community wouldn’t exist without them blazing the trail that they did.
Respect 🫡
Good reaction! I also think you have enjoyed watching the official video for this song as well. It shows a lot of what he's talking about with film footage while still showing the band playing.
You should definitely check out some pantera, some good ones to look into are walk, cemetery gates, domination, and cowboys from hell
Add in 5 minutes alone that one is great
I was lucky enough to see them live 5 years ago. Bruce Dickinson still runs around like a mad man, still puts everything into his performance and can still hold everyone in an arena in the palm of his hand.
I always loved his Iron Maiden could make a story through all their songs and even without lyrics it still tells a story
The hook is the lead guitar riff. The rhythm guitars, bass , and drums definitely evoke a gallop. In fact, the ‘metal gallop’ becomes so popular in the 80s thrash metal scene that it becomes first a trope, then a cliché. I bloody love it.
As for the war: Brits v. Russia, Crimean War, 1850s.
This was my morning going to college jam..such a legendary song🔥🔥🔥
Wow you really know your stuff. I've sung this song many times in bands and never knew the history or broken it down like you did. Awesome reaction, awesome track.
Dude!! I just found your channel and I've been loving the breakdowns. I grew up listening to metal and wouldn't really pay too much mind to the lyrics, I just jammed out to the music. But seeing some classics like this being broken down by a lyricist is very interesting. I'm learning meaning in songs that I've listened to a hundred times and never actually noticed. It's great!
I have a few suggestions you might like.
Embrace the endless ocean - Amon Amarth
I don't wanna be me - Type O Negative
Scream Aim Fire - Bullet for My Valentine
I could spout off dozens more but these I think you might like reacting to. Regardless whether you do or not, you've earned a fan today.
Cheers!
Every Knox reaction I watch, I'm always pleasantly surprised by his depth and breadth of knowledge. I guess I'll have to switch it up and only be surprised when he doesn't know!
This band was my first concert and I got to hear this song live. It was absolutely nuts because Eddie was on the stage still his heart was thrown into the crowd at the Oklahoma BOK
This is my most favorite song to play on my bass, the galloping and the rhythm just feels so good to play.
The guitarists play in harmony and each one gets part of the solo
Man another great analysis... maiden is my absolute favorite and you being a lyricist understand... and yes the metal horse gallop...🤘up the irons!
I always think of galloping horse during certain parts of this song as well. Never gets old🤘 great reaction
If you've ever heard the phrase "water, water everywhere. But not a drop to drink" you've got to check out Maiden's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' which is based on the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and from which we get that quote.
Dude you have no idea how much i've waited for you to react to IRON MAIDEN. Thank you. Love that you enjoyed it! Recomendation for one of their next songs if you are gonna react, either Number of the Beast, Hallowed be thy name or Aces High. Have a good one and keep up the good work with your own projects.
Man oh man your in for a treat with this rabbit hole. Maiden kicks so much ass
I stood in the rain to see them . Totally worth it!!!
If you continue with Maiden, please look out for live performances, the energy and storytelling will amaze you. Up the Irons!!!
Wow, you know your history way better than I expected! Nice job contrasting the perspectives of Tennyson and Iron Maiden, really interesting.
Great fun to see you exploring and decipher metal songs. Got a couple songs that I think you would love to check out, both lyrically and thematically:
Night Witches - Sabaton (the animated music video)
Through the Fire and Flames - DragonForce
Crushed - Parkway Drive
Absolute Power - Parkway Drive
The future - From Ashes to New
