I think is lacking some kind of law that obligates the console manufacturer to release an software update when the product gets to its End Of Life, that removes all these online authentications. After all if the manufacturer isn't interested in supporting the product anymore they should free it to be used as they were and with that preserve these old systems and games.

Any level of DRM when you pay for something is disgraceful in my opinion but the only way this will work is if everyone stuck together. I dont do digital downloads and will never own a diskless console. Maybe Sony know all this and its just a matter of time for the next generation of gamers. Sad times.

As much as I don't want it to happen this could be the last generation that we have any ownership of our games at all.
The big players are moving towards it, particularly Microsoft.
Once everything moves to the cloud that's it, game over, no more ownership and no more preservation.

Cloud gaming will never work simply because no matter how you are connected via wifi/LAN or how fast your network speed is latency will always have the last word. With that you get heavy image compression and terrible framerates and stutter. I have not seen 1 cloud game to run above 30 fps or with resolutions above 720p. 1080p 60 fps os simply not achievable in the cloud and will never be that's the reality. So there will always be native hardware for many years to come even 50+ years ftom now people will look back at the whole "power of the cloud" fairytale and LOL at it

3D Tv's were absolutely magical. It's was the coolest thing I've ever experienced, when it came to watching movies, and really thought 3D tv was the future of tv entertainment. Watching Jurassic Park 1 with the rain spraying down in front of you, and the dinosaurs popping out, was so wild! Jurassic Park 1 was a showcase for 3D tv. Some 3D Tv's were so impressive, it felt impossible what you were currently experiencing. But, it wasn't impossible at all... We had the tech, and these tv companies threw it in the garbage. It's sad that 3D is gone, and I'd love for 3D tv's to come back. With today's tech, 3D tv would be on another level. Imagine watching movies at 4K, 120Hz+, with eye tracking and accelerometers built into the 3D glasses, to ease the eye strain would work great. Plus, with all of the other advances in tv technology we have currently, 3D tv would be insane. People back then didn't like putting on glasses, but times have changed, and we are putting clunky vr tech on our heads. There is no question about it, 3D tv's would sell very well today.

It's just a one time authentication, isn't it? Even if authentication servers go offline in the distant future, they can release the authentication key and allow pairing via USB, if they want to.
And one positive I get out of this is, if the Blu-ray drive breaks, it's far easier to replace it by purchasing the module. Compared to the OG model.

I would suspect at least part of it is about region locking the drive. I think it's probably sold in an unlocked state and then when you connected to the PlayStation for the first time, it goes online registers the device and locks it to your current geographical region. This is what DVD and Blu-ray drives do on PC. But at least on PC, you get five opportunities to change the region of your drive.

It's been very worrying for me personally. One of the incredible things about gaming as a hobby is new players can buy old machines and games and a lot of the time it'll just work, sometimes you'll need some minor fixing but yeah.
My ~30 year old Mega Drive and N64, I can get them out of the attic, set them up and play them. And my fear is that these new, supposedly "superior" consoles, will become glorified bricks in 10-15 years when their servers go offline. People in 2040 or whenever won't be able to buy an old PS5 and enjoy its library like they can with a Dreamcast or Gamecube. What's so superior about the "new digital age" if a bunch of things that used to last just don't anymore? A lot of people seem to be under the illusion that this is improving the consumer experience, but companies want to be able to control whether or not we're allowed to use the things we've purchased.

I still struggle to understand who this is actually supposed to be for. Buying the digital edition plus a disc drive is more expensive than just outright buying the disc edition, so anybody who is even remotely interested in physical games will do the latter. And the amount of people who only later come to be interested in physical games and upgrade their digital editions has to be incredibly small. So the only party that is benefitting here is Sony because they now only have to manufacture one version of the console.

    2 things:
    - They shouldn't have to do this with the "physical" edition but that's just a "digital" edition with a disc drive already popped in from the factory. So they also need an internet connection for the first setup. They could've paired those one in the factory.
    - The reason for this, as mentioned in the video, is piracy. There is a chip in the disc drive which must be married to the mobo. However they could've moved that chip to the mobo and keep the physical "layer" connections. So power and bit level data. For example if you open a disc drive on the old PS5 and replace the laser assembly, then it works without remarrying the drive, because the chip remains the same. Therefore if they design that way in a way where they put that chip on the mobo and keep just those 2 connections in a new connector, then everything is the same with a deattachable disc drive.

Apparently that could be coming next year. I won't be getting it, since I already have a PS5.

There's a lot they could have done about it; and that is to offer a physical version of the console with a built-in drive, like they did before. As far as i'm concerned, there is no excuse for not offering that choice and doing it they watly they have here.

Don't blame the usa governent For that because ir it had to be like that sony was well aware of it before launching that model, so i think the opposite they want to monetize as much as they can
