Vital part of Nirvana's story. Hugely underrated, underrepresented, and underappreciated. We salute you and recognise your achievements and contributions to Nirvana and beyond, Chad. You have pride of place in my own personal Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
I love Chad as a person, real classy guy. He was an extremely creative drummer. But has was a bad live drummer, he needed to practice a lot more with a metronome and really practise their own songs. Having played in a lot of bands I know the difference it makes to bring in a solid, well practiced drummer who will follow your recorded parts exactly when you've had a sloppy player before that who never really learns your songs and just improvises live with drum fills all over the place. drummers like that are also impossible to record well with close mic recording. It takes the band to a whole new level and gives the whole outfit more confidence bringing in a solid rock drummer as a replacment. I suspect Chad living so far from the band was part of the problem as he couldnt practise with them so much. IMO Nevermind wouldn't have taken off as much with him recording the drum parts then touring the songs.
About half the songs on Nevermind were written and or demoed while Chad was still in the band. Dave gives credit for that and kept the drumming on those songs pretty much as Chad created. @@Windavinci
Dave's drumming with Scream was completely different from what he did later with Nirvana. I guess Dave in the early rehearsals had to learn all of Bleach and all the parts Chad wrote for Nevermind, so it's easy for me to guess that Chad's playing and composing influenced Dave's style forever.
He deserves a lot more credit! got into nirvana through bleach, and even tho its not a studio album incesticide was the first record i bought on cd back in the day.
Chad was great. Looking back on it as a drummer myself, Chad probably should have got rid of that North drumset he played. Those things were notoriously known for a flat drum sound no matter what heads or how well you tune them. Never the less it was destined to happen, Kurt was getting sick of Dave too, especially towards the end of making In Utero. This was more than likely going to be their last record anyway.
Chad's playing fits a different style than Nevermind. To me Chad's drumming was always classic hard rock influenced, Sabbath-y drumming. Nevermind needed the hardcore punk energy and precision of Grohl. That's why Kurt was amazed by Dave, bc he kept the band together tight.
Dave is a great drummer he hits hard and he’s fast but he literally copied almost all the drum parts off Nevermind and other past songs he just polished them up and gets way to much credit for it all, you actually don’t fully get to hear Dave doing his own drums parts until In Utero came out, nothing against Dave he’s a awesome drummer but definitely a bit overrated
As a real Nirvana fan and a drummer! I was always obsessed with Chad and his under appreciated drumming. People act like he was holding them back and Dave was the real star, but Chad created so many great hooks, and his work on Bleach is sublime. People forget that perfect timing isn’t everything. He brought that simple yet great grunge drum sound first imo Dave just followed suit and perfected those well written parts. All about serving the music. Respect!
Incesticide was the first album I bought with my own money on cassette. That album changed my whole life. I didn’t hear Nevermind until months later. Incesticide, I can still listen to. Nevermind, I have to be in the right mood. I love both.
I see Chad as a fitting drummer for their early stuff. But honestly, he had to be a stepping stone for the rest of the band. Dave took them to a new, higher level
I absolutely love the Incesticide albulm. Whether it’s a compilation album or not, I consider it Nirvana’s third album in between Nevermind and In Utero. Some of my favorite tracks are Dive, Hairspray Queen,Mexican Seafood 🍤 🦞 🍤 🍤, Sliver, and Aneurysm , to name a few.😃
I like Chad and he had some great creative moments (In Bloom), but his drumming sounded a bit sloppy. Grohl was like a metronome who hit as hard as Bonham, which really lent to the music.
1:56 That Friend who Played for soundgarden went on to Join the Green Berets. They (the Army, his team mates at base) found out when a video with him was played, he told no one even as these bands he was in were becoming HUGE. He was now a Green Beret, probably always was.
HIs early band is called Magnet Men not Tic Dolly Row. Thats the albums title. I see how you made the mistake as his wikipedia says the same thing. Someone was mistaken.
At 7:42. I was under the impression one of the reasons Kurt preferred David Grohl's drumming is that he always used a single kick bass pedal due to his distaste for anything metal. Chad Channing definitely used a double kick pedal on "School" from "Bleach" and possibly other tunes.
Ive been in a band where the leader or two leaders in my case had been working together for many years i never felt like my ideas were going to come into play and i got kicked out it hurt but was i really a part of them to begin with?
Regardless of the reason here many many drummers quit or get fired early on usually when it’s time to go into the studio a real studio with professional engineer and producer and realize the drummer isn’t cutting it for whatever reason from the vibe or not playing in time so a session drummer is used so the drummer gets mad and quits or the drummer is fired and a new drummer joins. If u look at many bands u will see many drummers leaving the same year an album is recorded. People like to blame bands but it’s usually not the case the drummer just didn’t work for the band. The drummer in my last band was great then slowly started to be more into partying and stopped practicing and couldn’t play songs we had been playing for 1 1/2 years same with a guitarist. It’s one thing to not be a great player early on but everyone should be getting better if they really want it but sometimes styles don’t mix a drummer or guitarist could be too basic or too flashy.
Grohl, a punk drummer primarily at that point, didn't have the grime that Channing had. So on a track like 'Dive', Channing's live version had WAY more character!
Left??? Got kicked Out. Love HIM on The bleach but grohl fit better Butt that leaving Out hall of fame was BS He was vital Part of Nirvana becoming NIRVANA Touring and working The roots with The band
Chad fired himself, they wanted him to get lessons. "What's the last thing the drummer said before he got kicked out of the band? 'Hey, I wrote a song.' -Dave Grohl
Some of the most amazing musicians have been snubbed by the RNRHOF. If I were Chad, I'd consider it an honor not to have to stand on that stage with Courtney Love. With having said that, Courtney has never been inducted and shouldn't ever be. She's talentless in music. I'll gove her props as an actress. She played a perfect Althea Leasure.
I’m a pretty big fan of Dave Grohl but its only fair that Chad receives the credit he deserves especially after his significant roll in Nevermind. It seemed as though Chad was wrongfully snubbed be Cobain.
In the end Kurt became exactly what he always hated a scumbag. He cut his friends ot of the money when he made it. Nobody supported his art more tha krist channing and grohl.
Kurt was jerk for mocking chad when he said you're going next, he wasn't jokjng he meant that, not cool. But kurt was trying to impress his other rock star mates by taking there advicevabout dave. Nirvana would have been massive with out dave, as the songs for nevermind were already mostly finished.
@Bpm121 that could have been dealt with in the studio, Chad got shafted out off his money, he would be financially set now if kurt had kept him in the band.

Very possible. Teen Spirit was a cultural phenomenon and Dave's fingerprints are all over it. It's one of the few Nirvana tracks he has a songwriting credit on. The drum intro is as iconic as the guitar, likewise the machine-gun groove of the chorus and the fills during the bridge. Cobain said himself if they hadn't released it as a single, they'd be just another band.

The man’s all class. Even when shade was thrown at him he never said a bad word about anyone. Kept his integrity
A rare quality in the music industry
Grohl gave a major shout out to Chad at the induction ceremony!
Should have done more than that
@@Windavincias a long time drummer and session musician myself I probably would have felt compelled to give the award to Chad ✌️🙌
30 years too late

@@Windavinciwhy? The rock n roll hall of fame is lame anyway. Just accept the award like any other, give credit where its due and move on.

Dale Crover done a lot of the drum tracks on bleach.
@@s0m3cunt91he did a whole demo but only two songs were used on Bleach.

Well said. Just let me add the fact he did not had the opportunity to record in a big expensive studio with a top tier producer.
Yeah, maybe Chad's drums would have sounded better in a more expensive studio and better producer. @@rodrigofonseca6241
