There’s a copy of the first album in my university radio station. There’s a sticker on it that notes “The drummer from Nirvana. Sounds nothing like them. This band is gonna be huge!”
Well actually, once after Dave had recorded a demo, Kurt called him up and asked what he was doing. He told him, and Kurt wanted him to come over and show him. After hearing the song, Kurt kissed Dave and happily proclaimed, I'm not the only songwriter in this band anymore!
This is true, but even then, Dave didn't get to see much of his work end up in any Nirvana releases. If I recall correctly, he was credited for the main riff in a song from "In Utero," and he wrote and sung lyrics for a B-side on that same album, but that was all the songwriting credit he ever got. The vast majority of Nirvana was Kurt Cobain.
Dave wrote songs for Nirvana. He wrote the bridge of Stay Away, he wrote Marigold, he provided background vocals live and in studio. He was a songwriting member along with Krist.
I can't remember what the bridge of Stay Away was. It seems like it went from verse to chorus. I'll have to listen. And didn't Nirvana already have Pay to Play before that?
"If only he could have seen the joy that his music brought to the world, maybe he could have found his own. My life was forever changed by Kurt, something I never had the chance to say while he was still with us, and not thanking him for that is a regret I will have to live with until we are somehow reunited. Not a day goes by when I don't think of our time together, and when we meet in my dreams there's always a feeling of happiness and calm, almost as if he's just been hiding, waiting to return." Dave Grohl
Foo Fighter's debut and the Colour and the Shape are both great but they've really tumbled into that god-awful Imagine Dragons-esc radio friendly rock genre, I think Dave Grohl would've made far better music if he stuck to being a solo artist, but he's probably making bank so whatever.
Hiding his enormous ambition has always been a secret of his success, unlike Courtney, who was always open about what she wanted, much to the detriment of her reputation. There is no chance in hell Dave wasnt going to make Foo Fighters happen, its just Kurt made it happen sooner rather than later.
Dave had said before Kurt's death, that he didn't want to only be in Nirvana. During the end he'd said he probably play here and there. He doesn't really talk about it but when you look into it, Kurt's death influenced what he'd go on to do so much.
Drummers are literally the backbone of everyband. If any band switched drummers everything sounds different. If the drum beat if off everything sounds off. R.I.P to Kurt. He was only my age. 🌹
It's often mentioned how Taylor took a big leap of faith when presented with the opportunity to LEAVE Alanis - a top headlining act in 1995 - and join Foo Fighters. I agree. But that was not nearly as profound as Dave's decision to go forward with his own band after being offered a solid position with Tom Petty. Petty was king of rock for the most part for about 2 decades to that point. Dave took the offer for a sure thing and said thanks but I'm going to bet on me. He did not double down, he pushed all in. THAT is so punk rock
Something that initially surprised me is that the 1st full lineup of the Foos is Dave and Pat ofc who were apart of Nirvana (Pat albeit a to-be member who was only touring guitarist) but ALSO, Drummer William Goldsmith and Bassist Nate Mendel who were both members of the 90's emo band: SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE, WHICH IS MY 2ND FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME (Behind Nirvana) AND I KNEW OF SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE BEFORE I LEARNED THAT THE 2 WERE (OR ARE STILL FOR NATE) APART OF FOO FIGHTERS WHICH BLEW MY MIND
I will never forget watching that performance on SNL and both rockin out and crying my eyes out. Huge Nirvana AND Petty fan, it was nuts to see/hear at that moment.
I understand the crazyness of having people that ridiculed you when you were young all of a sudden be in front of you as your performing your music and your like WTF! But thats life.
I've seen this phrase in many sources and I think it referenced not the direct people who bullied Kurt or any other members, but generally type of person like jocks or "normies" who either bullied or didn't get along with Kurt before mainstream success.
What makes me love self-titled more is that not only is it Dave’s farewell to Nirvana but also seemingly the end of an era for “grunge”. Though FF are their own band respectively I still consider self-titled the true successor to In Utero as Kurt’s influence can be heard throughout the whole album. The perfect bridge between In Utero and The Colour and the Shape.
You can definitely hear Nirvana in This is a Call -- his playing, the structure and vocals are almost as if Nirvana wrote it, and Dave is singing it. Same as you could imagine Kurt singing it.
dave did show kurt his demos and he showed him alone+easy target in 91 while kurt was in a bathtub kurt actually liked it and also felt relieved that he didnt have to write all the songs in the band anymore and but dave said that he thinks the songs they had then were good enough (this is just a rough retelling of what happened from my memory ive definitely forgetten key parts but basically dave showed alone+easy target to kurt and he liked it)
