    Bro, I really appreciated the way you made a mask for your dust texture. I don't know why so few people use layer weight for their materials, it's really powerful. As for me, I used it to make a chameleon car paint and it turned out very well. Good luck with your work

      Any good explaination what it does? Sounds like it can mimic pearlacent paint?

    You made one of the best tutorials ever made for this kinda material. Glad that I found your channel. Keep it up. 👏

    Thanks for this. I ended up using Blender's free object scatter add-on as I only needed it for a one off project, but this tutorial was a great jumping off point.

    This tutorial, by the way, will work not only for Blender, but also for other programs...such as 3D Max, for example.👍

    Good stuff! I think you could've skipped the dust texture part as for this small piece you don't even need it. That texture would work nicer for bigger objects like keyboard, furniture, etc.

    Can geoscatter make the dust objects appear more in crevices etc?

    • @ethdavis
      @ethdavis  2 місяці тому

      Indeed, I didn't show this to not complicate the video, but you can create custom masks, paint manually, use abiotic effectors and all sorts! So you could :)

      @Chopsticks3D 2 місяці тому

      you can cull objects based on angle or slope of a surface too. That might work for crevices

    Is there a way to make blender centimeter friendly? We can surely set the scene units to centimeters but that doesn't propagate well to default values of meshes. Can one set it such that newly created meshes have 1 cm of dimension instead of 1 m? Also the density values need to be super big at cm scales.
    I'm in product viz industry so I rarely deal with meters unless product is in a scene setup and this unfriendlyness with other units is keeping me stay with Maya which is getting buggier with updates.

      I’ve never tried this, but once you change the scale of a default mesh in the bottom left it normally stays that size. So you could change every primitive then delete them and save a default file so next time you open it stays that way?
      Again haven’t tried it but might work

    You would save you a lot of time to create a group with your dust texture then you have a single place if you wanted to change your dust texture, change the color, anything. Copying and pasting it into every material is quite inefficient. Good tutorial though.

    • @ethdavis

      Indeed, done all that with my car paint tutorial. No point showing that process in a unrelated video

    Would love to watch this tutorial and am totally curious about how this works, but the volume of your speech is ridiculous low compared to the average volume on UA-cam and since I do not want to get a heart attack once your video is over or some advertisement scoops in, I won‘t turn up my volume all the way to understand what you are saying. Maybe next time…

      I just compared this video to many other video's and everything is in the same ballpark.
      Problem is on your end. Might wanna go figure out what is causing that weird imbalance.

      @@M1ndblast @M1ndblast I looked into this just now after reading your message by starting this video on my PC in Chrome, on my iPad in the original UA-cam App and on my iPad in the App I use to watch UA-cam. Everytime I compared it to a random other. The weird thing is, that it is this video that is just way quieter than the other videos in all three instances. It is very likely that this is a problem on my end, because I am (nearly) a boomer and when I touch Tech it stops working, but it is quite a conincidence that it is just this video presenting this problem on different machines and in different apps. And just to be clear: There is audio and it is clear and seemingly with a good mic - but the average loudness is way less than others, so that I do not understand a thing when this video plays in the background while I do other stuff and have the volume adjusted to all the other YT-Videos. Oh well... but thank you for checking and if this problem is just on my end, even better! ... fck, I do not have emojies on my PC... please, mentally insert the emoji with the sweat on the forehead
