Hey everyone! Wanted to share my car paint that I use all the time, apart from one secret in the recipe! Of course this is just a base material, so any texture painting, imperfections and more, come after this. But this base provides you with a great starting point to get your car projects off the start line. Drop a comment if you need any help. Model: www.hkv-studios.com/ Geo-Scatter blenderma...

Thanks! this video was really helpful!:) keep on going
possible to have this as a download link?
Very cool video! but How come you said 5:21 the compositor uses only CPU if you can go to render properties then go to "performance" and select GPU device for the compositor? doesnt that works or im missing someting?
This video was filmed before that came out 👍🏻
@ethdavis cool thanks
That car is SO dang sick. People should watch some vidoes about it. Sadly the driver, the famous guy, passed away last year i believe with Snowscooter accident
Ah really 😞 I only just started watching him too!
@@ethdavis Yeah, he flipped the scooter and it landed on top of him. He was byhimself. Kinda of a freak accident
You are insane , great video ❤❤👌👌
Ehy I came back to this video to understand better and i was wondering, if I have a glare in the composition, how do i render it in each pass?
You could do it right at the very end by plugging the final mix into the glare node. You could also just plug the emission into the glare node and then add that by using screen at the end .)
@ethdavis Okay thank you, I guess the second option is better because I am rendering singles passes to export in davinci, so basically i connect the emission to glare, glare to mix screen and mix screen to the emission input of the output node?
I know that I can extract the denoised passes after checking the compositing box in the property. Is there no way to skip the output in the property and extract only the file output in the compositing tab?
My scene is over 1gb large and I'm rendering a 300 frame animation. Still flickering and noisy at 50 samples What can i do now? Scene has over 15 human characters and noisiness isnt an option
Increase the samples
I'm doing 4 minute per frame already imagine if I increase samples... Well if I have to.. how many samples should I go for
That’s just the beast that is 3D. Some renders take 80+ hours a frame. I wouldn’t know personally what you need, just play untill you’re happy with it
Should've done the Ui/Ux thingy then
Thanks I am going to try these .
Incredible breakdown, so good, thanks for all your efforts, really useful man! Especially loved the color grading and composition phase.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ethan what should i possibly search to get that rain splashes Dirt passes Smoke passes Water droplets passes Many other things If possible can you share these passes on discord of yours
Being a 3D artist and retoucher requires you to be pretty nifty at researching and finding things online; references, materials and more. There isn’t a particular thing you search, you just have to search random things and know what you’re looking for :) hope this helps!
@@ethdavis sadly maximum things on internet are paid 😥
- All the things you mentioned are free jpg’s from google search :)
I actually think that brake light looked more hot in the center because of how cameras capture light. Most times hot, very bright, get blown out. In real life it's not that exaggerated
Dang that inspiration from Steffen is on another lever. Hooy smokes. What he did in comp is insane. He showed a raw render frame. Pretty baffling
I also find tours pretty sick. The look is totally different, less minimal and more popping and heavier contrast. Super nice
Yeah he is super talented. There’s definitely a reason he works at ILM 😁
It looks nicer but the physics of the smoke feel off. Shouldn't smoke shoot out at the bottom and top of the wheels. Now it's simply going up slow. There is no momentum of it being push to the back
Thanks for the comment :)) so I actually tried to hit a reference which was very much upwards rather than outwards, but I do agree this felt a bit off and blobby. Plan to redo this and also in Houdini to see if I can get a simple method that works for all :-)
VectorFrameBlend is outrageously great plugin, I just used it and I couldn't believe it, insane and fantastic, Thank you Ethan, Thumb up
I have a question, i render my animations with low samples , like 40-80, and then increase quality with topaz but it gives me a lot of flickering and weird artifacts expecially in the dark area like shadows, how can i fix this?
More samples 👍🏻
@@ethdavis okay, can you please do a tutorial about temporal denoise with blender - davinci?
Never used that so I probably won’t, I’m sure there’s some on UA-cam though
skipped the entire process showing you adding the shapes, when i add the shape it doesnt show..
If it doesn’t show, apply scale should work, or increase instances 👌🏻
i made a dirty car in blender and it looked like a game like a 2024 game aaa but still dont know why it wasnt real with dirt and dust. but clean cars are somewhat more realistic than making car with dirt and dust. dont know why..... cant sleep
hey currently in 4.2 using this workflow for multilayer but none of my layers other than the combined layer are getting denoised. any ideas??
Do you have “use nodes” selected?
Thank you, this improves render a whole lot!
I used to work with element 3d, c4d but am trying to shift to blender, how hard is it as a beginner to work with cars, roads and animations
Brother can you give free blend file of this video ua-cam.com/video/5m6SZlYtSa0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Thanks for this. I ended up using Blender's free object scatter add-on as I only needed it for a one off project, but this tutorial was a great jumping off point.
Glad to hear it :)
I am doing excactly as you are showing for the combined denoise but the outcome looks washed out . Is there anything that i might doing wrong ? I am also using my AO.
AO shouldn’t be added on. It is used to add more contact shadow so you would ‘multiply’ it. But you don’t need AO to rebuild the image, it’s an added extra
@@ethdavis Thank you so much for the help . I tried multipling it with the combine and actually got a good result but as soon as i added it to the whole composite the result came out noisy on some parts and i think it is because i used both combine and all the other inputs (diff . trans , gloss...)
Did u find where u got the trees from?
Not sure mate, don’t think they were free though. Think it was someone’s gumroad
@@ethdavis thanks bro your own render is so good man I wanna be like you when I grow up
Look ! This is outstanding! But after the latest update 4.2 ! I’m asking you to do a scene like that With eevee render ! What do you think?!
It would definitely be possible, lots of people do amazing work using Eevee :) but I have no experience with it and don’t plan to use it unfortunately!
@@ethdavis thank you 🙏🏻
🔥🔥🔥
audio is low
This is awesome!
Thanks Kenny!
amazing... bro whats your email?
On my website mate
Thank you very much.
I have an even more ultimate guide than yours. It goes something like this: Take 50$, invest them in Turbo Tools addon. Best money ever spent.
I ´ll call you Ethan Dusty from now on

Great Tut
Is there a way to make blender centimeter friendly? We can surely set the scene units to centimeters but that doesn't propagate well to default values of meshes. Can one set it such that newly created meshes have 1 cm of dimension instead of 1 m? Also the density values need to be super big at cm scales. I'm in product viz industry so I rarely deal with meters unless product is in a scene setup and this unfriendlyness with other units is keeping me stay with Maya which is getting buggier with updates.
I’ve never tried this, but once you change the scale of a default mesh in the bottom left it normally stays that size. So you could change every primitive then delete them and save a default file so next time you open it stays that way? Again haven’t tried it but might work
@@ethdavis Interesting. Will check 👌
we are not understand you we want to know this car and this building where you get or how to made it
I think the video explains it well enough to understand the idea. This isn’t a course or tutorial :)
Plz make tutorial on how to drop objects from a aeroplane
Great video, and thanks for linking to resources and posting the files as well. Sound was at perfect level ;)
This tutorial, by the way, will work not only for Blender, but also for other programs...such as 3D Max, for example.👍
This looks sooo (un)clean!
too much hair imo but still looks insanely good
man this is amazing i love your channel and content
Thanks dude!
You would save you a lot of time to create a group with your dust texture then you have a single place if you wanted to change your dust texture, change the color, anything. Copying and pasting it into every material is quite inefficient. Good tutorial though.
Indeed, done all that with my car paint tutorial. No point showing that process in a unrelated video
Nice work Ethan, thanks for sharing
Thanks Corey!
Looks soo cool
😳😲😯🤠🥳🤓😎😘🥰😍
You made one of the best tutorials ever made for this kinda material. Glad that I found your channel. Keep it up. 👏
Thanks dude!
Good stuff! I think you could've skipped the dust texture part as for this small piece you don't even need it. That texture would work nicer for bigger objects like keyboard, furniture, etc.
For sure!
Would love to watch this tutorial and am totally curious about how this works, but the volume of your speech is ridiculous low compared to the average volume on UA-cam and since I do not want to get a heart attack once your video is over or some advertisement scoops in, I won‘t turn up my volume all the way to understand what you are saying. Maybe next time…
Hmm, sounds found on my end and mobile, will bump it up next time pal 👍🏻
Sounds good to me
I just compared this video to many other video's and everything is in the same ballpark. Problem is on your end. Might wanna go figure out what is causing that weird imbalance.
@@M1ndblast @M1ndblast I looked into this just now after reading your message by starting this video on my PC in Chrome, on my iPad in the original UA-cam App and on my iPad in the App I use to watch UA-cam. Everytime I compared it to a random other. The weird thing is, that it is this video that is just way quieter than the other videos in all three instances. It is very likely that this is a problem on my end, because I am (nearly) a boomer and when I touch Tech it stops working, but it is quite a conincidence that it is just this video presenting this problem on different machines and in different apps. And just to be clear: There is audio and it is clear and seemingly with a good mic - but the average loudness is way less than others, so that I do not understand a thing when this video plays in the background while I do other stuff and have the volume adjusted to all the other YT-Videos. Oh well... but thank you for checking and if this problem is just on my end, even better! ... fck, I do not have emojies on my PC... please, mentally insert the emoji with the sweat on the forehead
