  • Patterning my new Stevens M301 20 gauge dipped in Asio camo! I shoot 20 targets with 5 different chokes at 40 yards trying to find a great pattern for my turkey gun! Chokes are Sumtoy .562, Indian Creek .562, TruLok .560, Rectifire .560, and Patternmaster .565. We used Boss, TSS Shot, and some handloaded #9 tss in the test!

I bought one of these 301 for my wife 3 years ago and I liked it so much I bought another one for myself. We’ve taken 3 turkeys between the two of them. Great setups! I’ve even used mine to take two black tail deer in shotgun only areas. All I had to do was switch out the choke for a rifled choke and rezero it. Best bang for the Buck setup

You'll want a tight pattern until a bird pops a ridge on you at 7 yards, and you try to hit it with the pattern of a 30-06, and you miss. You'll change your mind at that point.

@@joshsinglefooter you just focus on your hunts and from the sound of it your might want to pattern your gun up close and not 40 yards. Ive been doing this for 20 years I’ll be alright I’ve killed turkeys closer than 7 yards. That bead on the end of your gun is for you to aim with.

After seeing what a 20 gauge could do in Oklahoma this year, I came home and set up a youth model 20 for next spring. I didn’t do a pellet count, but I was impressed with what it did when I patterned it. I pulled the second shot to the right, but there was still plenty of shot in the head and neck.

Also, I shoot those boss 2 oz loads with lots of luck shooting a less constrictive choke. Currently shooting a 20 gauge rem 870 using a Carlson hevishot "extreme range" 0.589 constriction choke. Shot it today with 325 holes with the boss 2 oz on #9s.

Just watched your work. Many years back I wrote an article regarding the three and a half 12 gauge. It was designed for waterfowl and steel shot. Unfortunately, people began shooting great patterns with lead and started shooting it for turkey hunting and failed to realize that the payload and powder charge didn't match. Patterns were great but the penetration on a gobbler was poor, failing to penetrate the backbone of a gobbler. Turkeys were being killed at long distances but had to go between the vertebra or through the eye to the brain. Two ounces of shot is questionable for a 20. Tss has changed the game for sub guns but must be paired properly between payload and charge. I'm not surprised that the two ounce loads faired less well, and I would question penetration ability.

I’m sure you know you messed up on that patternmaster but I’m pretty darn sure they only make it in .565 constriction for all 20ga guns. Great test though! I use an 870 compact 20ga and use an Indian creek .555 with apex gt-20 no.9’s and consistently get 320-350 in the 10” circle at 40yds depending on the temperature outside. Temperature makes a huge difference on patterns as well and some guns shoot better with a dirty barrel and some shoot better with it clean. Mine likes it dirty and about 65-75 degrees outside. Anything above or below those temps and it starts to open the pattern up. I am kind of a pattern nerd 🤓 but good luck this season! I’m headed to south Texas next weekend to hopefully make one flop🤞🏻
