For as long as I’ve hunted turkey, I’ve used 2 3/4” 12 gauge 4,5, or 6 shot lead pheasant loads for turkey and they’ve worked just fine. Call them within 30 yards and you don’t need tungsten, copper plated, etc. More than half the fun is calling them in close.
That's what my uncle's and grandpa taught me to use rem long range 2 3/4 1 1/4 oz 4,5,6 and have used them for years don't need a 10 dollar shell to kill a turkey
This might be the best turkey ammo review I’ve ever seen. The one consistency I see between all the turkey ammo review videos is that magnum blend and long-beard XR are the top dogs.
Best comparison video on the web. Thanks for putting the time, energy and $ into this. I just bought a mossberg 835 and was unsure about what ammo to try.
Fantastic video. The discussion seems to always head down the path of "every gun is different". But they aren't that different and a good shell is a good shell for the most part. It's great to be able to learn from a video like this and save some money as well as shoulder meat. Thank you!
Thx for doing this! Great info. I think a standard non choke barrel with these loads compared to same loads through a choke would be a cool video. Grandpas old break open vs modern mossberg shoot out...
Excellent review PERIOD. Totally objective from beginning to end. Have experimented with the same ammo and leadsled combination myself although with a TC ProHunter 20ga. Max range for me was out to 40 yards. Same results ………. I have elected to stick with the Longbeard, they flat out work. Keep up the great work.
Very good 👍 the best video I've seen on turkey loads. Thank you for taking the time and money to test. I usually use Winchester #5 but picked up a box of 3" #9 TSS. Illinois just drop the minimum shot size from #7.5 to any. As long as it's #4 or smaller.
Great review/comparison. I have used the longbeard for several years but since I don't get many days to hunt, I am switching to the heavy loads to get a few extra yards past my normal 40 yrd limit. This gave me a real side by side without the investment or bruises.
One of the best turkey ammo reviews I have seen on UA-cam so far. Great job and keep up the good work. Good luck this spring! Oh and I do like me that Longbeard XR! My only criticism would be that you should have done one shot in the 5-10 yard range. It's the one range where the I think the Longbeard looses a step to loads like the 3rd Degree. Great job again.
Great video Caleb! I'm a Winchester Longbeard guy myself (3 1/2" #5's). I might get a box of 3rd degree just for the #spurtape :) Good luck this year bub!
I really appreciate this review. I just started Turkey hunting and Im using the new 3rd degree ammo. Im gonna have to try some of that other ammo. Thanks for this video.
Great video!! My son & I watched it and found it very useful. His 8 yrs old and in a few weeks will hunt for first time. Keep the videos coming brother!
Great evaluation. May I suggest a change for the next test, standardize the target if possible. The orange caldwell target doesn't exaggerate the hits the same way the black back targets do. All in all the best turkey ammo test out there.
I’ve patterned most of those with the same results! I’m shooting a 835, 24” barrel, sumtoy .675 choke, Williams fire sights, libsaver recoil pad shooting the longbeard 3.5” #4’ ..... its RIDICULOUS!!!!
Very good info and video! I shoot a Stoeger m3000, what I'm doing this year is keeping a 3rd degree Chambered and tss ghost loaded on the shell lifter. If a bird hangs up past 40 all I have to do is slowly reach up and eject the 3rd degree and the tss is ready to quietly hop in and go to work
Federal made the flite control flex wad in their black cloud duck and goose loads too and they work great. I had a chance to try em out this past duck and goose season here in TN.
Had to sub after watching this review! Best by far that I have watched. Have to try this in the Mossberg 930 that I have just won. Don’t know much about shotguns but this one came with 4 chokes, one is a turkey choke, and also won a Kicks High Flyer choke too!
Very interesting video comparison. It really makes me feel good about the Indian creek choke for my 1187 and longbeard xr ammo I just picked up. Plan on getting out and patterning it soon.
Very impressed 👏 on your comparison. After this snow ❄ breaks here in Pennsylvania I need do same have test new shotguns groups yet. I know my mossberg 500 long barrel shoot high with #4 shot turkey and hevie-shot #6
@@TheNaturalCalling I'm very intrested in the new federal TSS. I've taken birds out at 70 yd with the Winchester long beard XR but that number 9 shot seems like it would be very interesting
One of the best reviews. And the only critique would of made this perfect, would of been using the same target for all the loads. Damn, good job brother.
That ole mossberg is a keeper for sure. I’ve patterned a lot of shotguns and shot a lot of shotgun still target competitions and most all shotguns are like shooting a sloppy shooting rifle, most of the times you get groups that are up down right and left but that Mossberg is dead on all the time. Great job and keep the videos coming please.
I was mostly interested in the federal tss load. I've patterned most of the others except the 3rd degree. I always like to see what someone else is shooting and the results they are getting. My son and I have killed alot of gobblers with rhe magblends until I started with a friends handloaded tss in 12& 20ga. Wicked stuff for sure. Also enjoyed your recent hunt too. Have a great season!
By far the best head to head comparison I’ve seen to date. If nothing else it shows there ain’t much difference from shell to shell in modern turkey ammo but the added amount of shot per shell you get by going to a tss load all the while gaining or at minimum equaling the load weight of comparable lead or heavier then lead/tungsten alloys, definitely isn’t a gimmick. Not to mention that tss really shines in the smaller gauges like 20ga and 410 bore. It now gives youth hunters, smaller women hunters and or handicapped hunters a viable option for recoil management as compared to 3” or 3.5” 12ga magnums that most hunters considered mandatory to ethically kill a long beard prior. They can now shoot smaller bore shotguns and confidently make kills out to 40 yards easily never noticing or thinking about what punishment awaits that trigger pull and where as they might otherwise become gun shy or worse, give turkey hunting/shooting firearms up completely, they now can add to our tradition and keep the sport alive and growing. I gotta ask. How do u like the tss from Federal. Is it worth it. I shoot a Benelli SBE2 and usually shoot Magnum Blend 3.5” shells. Should I try the stuff
Ill tell you what! Winchester has it figured out with there ammo.especily turkey loads.ive been turkey hunting for over 20 years & sure seen the ammo improve over the years.ive shot a couple other brands thru the years but the past 6 years winchester is the only shell i will put in my shotgun for deer & turkey.thanks for the video.great stuff!

Pretty sure if you glue tss together it would be a slug. Works for me I’ve killed them with long beards at 74 yards. Gonna try tss from apex In my fiancées 20ga sxp. We will see what happens. Just have to decide between a kicks or a jebs. I have them both so I have to pick one and order for this gun. Personally if it kills a turkey where you intend to be shooting it’s good. We all can agree on that.
Best patterning video I've watched. Comparing loads with different shot sizes and payloads may be a little misgiving when counting holes in paper but still a good comparison. Great review! I spent $100’s on ammo and bought just about every load available on the market back in the mid 90’s to try out of my 10 gauge. Every load that patterned best are long discontinued. Remington 2 1/4 oz #6’s outshot every target you tried with a Cheap jelly head Choke. Imagine all three of your longbeard groups Packed together ...that what it looked like at 40 yards in my gun with the Remington 6’s! Pretty depressing as it’s been discontinued for approx 20 years. I’ve resorted to federal grand slam and Winchester 2oz #5’s. Both have killed turkeys out to 87 yards but the groups are not nearly impressive. I picked up a patternmaster.695” the other day and will have to retest the half a dozen option left on the market and probably start reloading my my obsolete 10 gauge browning turkey gun.
I love my 10 have to reload shells are cheaper to make than buy. Hint if you use liquid alox to your 6s your pattern tightens up to 20 inch spread at 70 . Now that's just for birds that are to old n smart
@@charlessmith7649 I loaded up some 3 oz #5’s with 45 grains of lil gun and patterned the other day. I had 87 hits in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. Wasn’t impressed with the code black turkey tube and the load. I might have to load a few more and try with a more open choke.
@@tripplebeards3427 it holds the shot together like drop or two per 1 1/2 oz shot . It works great expecialy with buck shot but even better with small shot number 5 /4 just a messy process but tightens groups up substantial

@@charlessmith7649 what does the alox do? I have a few bottles laying round I never used from my.lee sizers
@@tripplebeards3427 it holds the shot together like drop or two per 1 1/2 oz shot . It works great expecialy with buck shot but even better with small shot number 5 /4 just a messy process but tightens groups up substantial
