Even the very sensitive and uncomfortable subjects are done in such a way that you are extending a helping hand to someone who may not know what to do. I remember the first time my first baby (at 9 months old) needed a rectal temp… I was lucky enough to have an ER doc this understanding and kind. I had done an incomplete underarm temp that got to 103, so I gave him Tylenol and took him to the hospital where he had a rectal temp of 105+. The nurses and Drs kept taking it with different thermometers because they were sure each thermometer was broken for how high his temp was.
Eventually they just surrounded him in ice packs since Tylenol and Motrin weren’t doing a damn thing…
There was no obvious reason for his fever at the hospital, but later that day he had a giant, excessively full diarrhea diaper and his fever went away almost instantly 😐

I had febrile fits brought on by a high fever when I was a baby/toddler. They packed me with ice and damp towels too. I’ve no recollection of it though so it’s highly likely your baby won’t remember anything either. It’ll just be a scary nightmare memory for you.

As a midwife in Australia I can confirm that it's not done here. Auxiliary temp is quite accurate, if unsure we check both arms. If they show a high temp then we work with that number rather than checking rectally. Rectal temps sound invasive an unnecessary.

Yeah I ended up babysitting with another friend in a hotel room for a few hours while the mom & dad had a dinner out, neither my friend nor I had much experience at all, I’m the youngest of my family generation & my friend was an only child. We forgot to warm up the milk at first & the baby was being so fussy, (it was room temp not cold but still) but we figured it out pretty quick. We were both CPR certified & know the general stuff like diapers & how to burp but if you’re not used to doing it, you can forget simple stuff. The baby was fine & is now a normal healthy child.

You had no idea a rectal temp check was a REAL thing??? I don't have kids(do have nephews though) but even I knew that was a real thing that doctors do. Time for you guys to get educated on BASIC stuff like that. When I say get educated I mean actually TALK to the doctor. They will break it down to you the why's they use certain tools or how they do certain procedures on a baby/kid versus an adult. You don't have to know all the complicated stuff because you are not doctors but you really should read up on stuff that doctors would do and use for babies and kids. Not trying to be mean but like I said, get educated to help yourselves so you don't assume the worst from everyone automatically or that they are abusing your kids when they have certain things they use. Just saying.

yes, I remember getting the rectal thermometer as a little girl. I was so HAPPY when I aged out of it, and the mouth was the next step. Finally, aged out to armpit. Now we are back to oral thermometer and laser temps.

I have respect for Healthcare workers. Dealing with the public when their health is in jeopardy must be very taxing. I'm a plumber and limit myself to construction because I don't have the patience to deal with the public even in that capacity. Hats off to you.

Ben is a good and understanding nurse. It’s not easy being a first time mama and not knowing these things. It’s not easy to check the temp in the bottom of a crying squirming baby.

    This is a legitimate question.

Whew, I remember when my first baby had that done for the first time. Poop exploded all over the nurse, who just walked out of the room with the best "FML" look on his face and I just stood there with my eyes bugged out, not knowing what to do. 😂

I've actually done this all my life (i'm french and my mom is a nurse so she always says it's more acurate). I have never understood why other people find it awful : it doesn't hurt and you can do it yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

in Europe doing things rectally for babies and toddlers is very common ad reliable and efficient. Also giving meds rectally for a baby eg acetaminophen

Totally reasonable to hesitate and ask questions when someone wants to do a procedure on your kid. Especially when it's likely to be upsetting or even painful.

I legit cried with my baby when I brought my baby in for constipation that was so bad that he was refusing to eat of even nurse. It was 3am in the middle of a snow storm.. and he had so much gas built up behind the almost impaction that to relieve the pressure the doc had to put his finger up there. I held my baby still and he was crying, I was crying, and he let out the biggest fart I had heard out of him yet and he latched on right away. All was well. But it was hard

Having had at least (more than) one prostate exam, I can honestly say that a skinny thermometer is MUCH easier to "let in" than the index finger of a 6 foot tall MD -- regardless of the amount of lubrication he used. IJS...

Your videos are always great. Can you do some more where heavier topics are covered? I've had my share of funny times I the ER as a patient. (1) I've also been to the ER where I was brushed off for suicidal thoughts, (2) a doctor didn't listen (or didn't care) when my husband explained I was coweeng in the corner from trying listening to my lungs b/c of PTSD from sexual/phsyical abuse, etc.
