@@SinisterScoundrel6562they weren't 'select' they were a group of typical cops. They made up their mind about her on the word of a fellow 'leo', without any investigation, and abused her on the grounds that they thought she was faking illness. Which is not a crime.
If it was a select few who acted like this, the others would have stood up for her and stopped this before the abuse happened.
They all used their authority as police officers to bully an extremely vulnerable and sick old woman to death. They may not have expected her to die in them, but they knew what they were doing was not kind or humane. If they didn't, they don't deserve the title of human, let alone the authority of the police force.

I've been discharged from a hospital while going into renal failure and had to go to another. ER staff are like police, most are good people who want to help people other however are complete sociopaths that somehow think thur basic degree and tiny amount of power makes them some how superior.
I've had health problems and required a lot of visits, one time a DR was getting real arrogant with me in my room talking to me like trash. I simply told him "You know a doctorate doesn't protect you from an ass whooping" when the cops arrived I was released because I told them it wasn't a threat it was a suggestion to improve his attitude because it could escalate with a less reasonable patient than me. (AKA plausible deniability)

First part yes, I agree with, the hospital was primarily responsible, but IMO the police should never have been called. Clearly Lisa was severely ill and her discharge from hospital, even a private hospital, was likely illegal, but the police are not medical professionals and they were misled/ tricked by the hospital that discharged her. I don't thing the police deserve much, if any, of the blame.

I was treated like this before at a Sacramento Emergency Room. And I'm retired as an EMT. I became physically disabled and it puts you in a level of poverty where you're not going to look your best because you don't have money.

I'm placing blame also on the hospital and doctor who discharged her. She obviously was not well enough to leave, but they didn't want to deal with her anymore, basically throwing her out onto the streets. Arrangements should have been for her to go somewhere safe, like an extended care facility, nursing home or at the very least, a homeless shelter.

I called 911 when stabbed in the lung and couldn’t talk very well. They hung up on me twice. I was homeless so I didn’t have enough money for a taxi and took a streetcar to the hospital. First streetcar driver kicked me off after two stops, (maybe more, I’m not sure because it was a long time ago and I was bleeding into my lung and very dizzy). The next streetcar drove directly to the hospital and actually had some people waiting with a rolling gurney.
The City released all of their less dangerous mentally disturbed patients from the mental hospitals and one was staying at the same YMCA as me. He thought my Sony Walkman was a device that was harming him so he stabbed me after I made a phone call for him at a phone booth and he heard a fax machine or computer signal. He had severe schizophrenia or some other mental illness.

About 3 decades ago, when I was about 20, I felt unwell after donating blood. I was on the street, and had to lie down on a bench (my blood tension was probably too low). Nobody helped me, and the way people were looking at me, they obviously thought I was a junkie. Ditto 15 year later when I was going to a medical appointment, 1 day after having had surgery under anaesthesia. I had spent the night in hospital to recover but was still feeling out of it, and got lost. I had to carefully select someone to help me (I was on the phone to my doctor's receptionist, I had told her on what street I was and she was trying to give me directions as I was only a couple of hundreds yards away, but I just couldn't make any sense of it). I explained to an African lady that I was lost and couldn't understand the directions, I handed the phone over to her, the receptionist gave her the directions, and she accompanied until we hit the correct street. Most people would just have assumed I was drunk.

When they made a big stink about how we didn’t have enough beds for patients during covid they never bothered to mention that our hospitals are almost always at capacity. It’s not a new thing- that’s why they’re going to discharge you as soon as they can & just park you on the sidewalk. They need the beds and the city won’t allow them to expand. The government also has a limit on how many doctors and nurses we can have in the country- only so many people are allowed to become a doctor or nurse each year so that there’s always a shortage and they can make more money.

But I digress... I think if Blount Memorial was a better facility, or if Ft. Sanders had done a more thorough assessment before discharging her, she wouldn't have faced the whole situation with those cops.
That security guard was such an ass, and the cops literally couldn't run two brain cells together to think for themselves.
Both of my babies were born at Ft. Sanders.
One niece and a nephew were too, of the many I have.
I've stood on that corner many times waiting for my husband to bring our vehicle from the parking garage.

I was treated similarly. I went to the ER in excruciating pain. The ER doctor didn't do any tests, no examination, he just yelled at me and sent me away with an acid reflux diagnosis, which is something I already have, and I have it managed quite well. When I went back to the ER less than 12 hours later it was discovered that my gallbladder was actively bursting (inflamed and hemorrhaging), that it was yellow from infection, and that I had sepsis due to the infection spreading into my blood. I required an emergency surgery and a week long stay in the hospital to recuperate and receive multiple antibiotics under observation.

This really hit a lot of nerves. I was treated poorly when I had my first stroke in my 30s, I was told to go home because I was "just having a migraine" and they had a couple car accident victims coming in (they needed to prioritize over me and make room). Then, a few years ago, I had blood clots in my lungs, and the ER didn't believe I had any real problems. The doctor scolded me for going there for a "non life threatening condition." My family doc diagnosed the problem (with a CT the ER didn't do) the next day. Apparently, an old therapist didn't believe some of my physical complaints, and I've been labled as a hypochondriac in my medical records ever since (I can't remember the term they used, but that is what it meant). It follows me everywhere, although every problem I've ever had or complained of has been verified medically. I literally have PTSD now from going to the ER, and still have to prove myself I feel with each doctor visit. I'm now about the same age as this poor lady was when she died, and also overweight. I'm terrified of having medical emergencies now, afraid of not being believed more than of the medical emergencies themselves (and I've had a few.)

I have been an RN for decades. I learned very early if someone tells you something, you assess it. Get an O2 sat for shortness of breath, check for redness, warmth or swelling for complaints of pain. I could see Lisa's abdominal breathing while hanging out of the van. This whole episode makes me sick to my stomach. Keep your family doc and if you haven't yet, explain to them how you got that erroneous label. You may want to put it in writing and request it to be removed from your chart. Go to the E.R. if you need help. If a doctor blows you off, tell a nurse what you need. If all else fails, leave and remain in your vehicle. If your condition deteriorates, call 911 from the parking lot. At least you will be assessed by paramedics who don't know you were accused of "faking".

I ended up with the same doctor in the ER, but after I told her my primary care doctor diagnosed me after a CT scan the next day after the initial visit, she verified my medical records with the PEs, and just snorted something about "I was just following protocol." Because of my condition (and to cover her butt), I was admitted for a couple of days. When moved to an in-patient floor, she didn't manage to tell them about the PEs, just told them at this point I had either a TIA (which often can't be proven medically as it is temporary) or something psychological causing my symptoms. I made sure the floor nurses knew about the PEs because they didn't know, and it is now in the records (gross oversight to not tell them). The ED can be a cruel place for people. I went in at age 40 with known gallstones having a gallbladder attack. I was crying and restless. I will never forget the “cute” young nurse (who couldn’t have been a nurse even a year) who laughed at me, told me to go sit down and wait my turn, that everyone here was hurting. I was a nurse at that very hospital. The ER doctor was of course charmed by her and laughed at me too. I can imagine how they treated this poor woman. They wanted her out of the hospital and off their premises. They did not care to find out what was wrong and try to ease her suffering.
My mother died in the hospital and thankfully they worked really hard in the ER. But I wonder if she had came in alive and talking if they would have been as sympathetic. Someone needs to develop an empathy test to rule out bad caregivers. THAT kills people more than any poor skill or medication error.

I was an EMT back in the 80's, and worked for ambulance companies that did mostly transfers between hospitals and nursing homes and the residences of elderly patients. Some patients were argumentative, even combative at times, and possibly difficult to handle due to weight and/or total inability to assist us. Moving a patient who is 200+ pounds of dead weight around is much harder than most people realize. For untrained, inexperienced people who are only accustomed to yelling at people and tasing and/or beating the hell out of them if they don't do what they are screamed at the first time, with a seasoning of the occasional gunshot if they are a different color or smell funny, a patient like this could very well trigger them, especially if they have gotten it into their one-track minds that the old, disabled lady is Bad Guy. The fact that they gave her The Treatment, instead of listening to her, checking her ankle, giving her the inhaler IMMEDIATELY upon being asked, and just generally checking her status, is a horrible tragedy, and could so easily have been avoided. The fact that the PD and the DA have protected the perpetrators of this horror in the way they apparently have, and the fact that the perps themselves are playing the victims and whingeing about their poor, pathetic little feewings, is all too predictable; inevitable, even, in today's society. I hope that somehow the family can find justice for the grandmother who just wanted to be with her family.

This looks like a healthcare system under extreme stress. It looks like the hospital didn't want to deal with her and dumped her. There's no way the police should even have been called here. The police is there to deal with crime, not sick people.

Hello, Dr.Grande as i watched the entire arrest video. And from the moment law enforcement arrived, they handled his situation with disgusting unprofessionalism and negligence..

Rest in peace Lisa. This is an absolute outrage! If I was her family I would be coming at everyone involved at least in civil court. Lisa's rights were violated in the worst way. Nobody assessed her health situation and played God with her life. Thank you for covering this Dr. Grande. You're the best.

Why civil court? Lust for money? When a person dies money doesn't bring the dead, but makes you a fucking greedy bastard.

Thank you Dr Granda. As a nurse in my community I often see this same condescending behavior from the paramedics in my area, they believe they are above those that are old and in need of support. I actually had a paramedic try to convince me to not respect the patient decision to transport because, as he stated, "they're old and what are we going to do for her, she's 91?" I have since quit my nursing profession and support, without payment, the litigation process against paramedics.

Thank you for covering this frightening case. Was the ER Doctor, who dismissed her the first time, charged with malpractice at least? People die of sepsis from blockage!

Being confused and combative are symptoms of many medical issues. Sometimes an argumentative person is dealing with a UTI and not being intentionally insubordinate.

I have been the victim of doctor, nurse and other health care brutality for many years. It is sickening! I believe this and feel medical professionals should be held accountable just like these officers. What a world. 😢

When we fail to show compassion for the weak, we will often find ourselves not receiving it when we need it. He should tread carefully through his years of strength because age will come upon him, if he is blessed with more years.

That’s the curse I wish on anyone who takes advantage or harms the elderly or those with disabilities. That woman was defenseless in that situation.
