I've been requesting my balls off to Sony to give us an HD Remaster of this game for the PS4. It's 1 of if not my favorite RPG's of all time. From the pretty background to the beautiful music, you guaranteed to have a good time. Shoutout to my boy Morrie making it in as a playable character "Raggatso" lol
I feel the same way. I wish Sony would remaster DQ8 as they did with other PS2 Classics. How can I request too? And do you think SE is preventing them from porting it to PS4?
CaesarMartins They had a open request forum for PS2 remasters a while back when they announced Rogue Galaxy and others as remasters. I thought since DQVIII was co-developed by Level 5 just like Rogue Galaxy it'd be a no brainer. But I dunno man SE probably did block them from getting it. It's literally available on iOS and other platforms. But not on the brand platform it debuted on.
just started it. Love the desgin, the charactes and it has tons of charm so far. So far very good. As dark prime say , witch i havent taught about but makes sense and i guess is a reason i love rpg is they are so relaxing
This was the first dragon quest game that I really got addicted to and even to this day - this game is my favorite game of all time for the ps2. There is just something captivating about this game that not a lot of rpg's could ever do and this game just made you fall in love with the world. I can't tell how much that I actually loved traversing through this game and walking down the winding roads while day would transition into night and vice versa. It's a beautiful game with a wonderful story and excellent gameplay is definitely the first game anybody should try if they're new to the series.
"Comfort Food" game is the best description by far that I've heard for DQVIII. And I'm glad someone else agrees with me for Yangus' voice actor - he did a marvellous job.
The end of Dragon Quest VIII about made me cry as well. Actually, pretty much every DQ game has made me teary-eyed at the conclusion; not necessarily because they're that sad (unless we're talking V), but because you become so charmed by the characters and world and attached to them that you are quite upset to see them end. Playing the 3DS remake of VII recently, I was struck by how well the vignette-based storyline and characters (especially Maribel) have held up 15 years later. Cannot wait to replay this; I gave away my PS2 years ago and have regretted it ever since.
@@marxkasai I think the Switch is becoming better and better but like you guys said the 3DS is still the best! :) The 3DS is one of my favorite consoles.
Depends... DQ IV, V and VI I prefer the original 8 and 16 bit versions over the DS remakes, however DQ IX was spectacular, and I'm going to buy either DQ VII or VIII on the 3DS VERY soon ;3 I'll have both eventually but I don't know which one to get first... I'm leaning towards 8 because everyone says it's one of the best games in the series (if not THE best) and I've never played it, but I've been looking forward to 7 for such a long time and now it's finally out in the west and I REALLY want it!
I just discovered your channel but I can already hear how much of a fan you are of Dragon Quest games. Very charismatic too, you earned yourself another fan!
Been playing this for the first time on my Series X - via the standalone PS2 emulator. It plays perfectly and looks stunning at 4k. The characters and world scales so well, it’ll be hard to believe this is coming from ps2 code.
just started it. And it has alot of charm, like the design , the characters, the amotsphere so far. And to see enemies on the world map so refreshing and good
I love dq8 so much!! I was in tears at the end as well!! It is my favorite RPG of all time! Can't wait to pick this up and complete my dq ds/3ds collection!!!!
I found the orchestral soundtrack to be a huge turn-off to the game. As a matter of fact, it annoyed me so much that I had to take frequent breaks to avoid getting too mad at the game. The fact that it is MIDI is a major upgrade, in my book. I just prefer synthesized music over the sound of real-world instruments.
Cascade617 Imo the orchestral music gets repetative a lot faster than the synthesized versions. much prefer the original. The opening battle intro is so annoying orchestrated
Got into the series because of Monster Joker. A friend told me it's like Pokemon and had so much fun with that game. Then I bought 4, 5 and 8. And I still get hyped everytime we get a DQ game here in Europe.
Nostalgia is coursing through me right now. DQ8 is one of my favorite RPGs, played it back in 2005 and I just remember falling in love with the environment, characters, story, combat, etc. The game really got me into turn based RPGs and was really a gateway into a lot of amazing JRPGs. Im definitely going to pick this up!
So this one you can see all the enemies on the world map? I remember in the original you could only see the special enemies, but the random battles were pretty frequent. Anyway, don't mean to be THAT guy, but if they did go in and make all the enemies visible that would be a damn nice upgrade!
hunting Specific monsters will become a mini game for you to play, they bonus is a Special Monster will then Spawn at Random for you to Battle and Defeat. you can then Take its Picture.
Mark Plott So normal, random enemies still aren't visible on the world map I take it?I was unsure because the video seemed to suggest ALL enemies could now be seen.
Johnny Bensonitis NO , all Enemy are on screen, except when you Whistle or travel by Boat. Some monster can OUTRUN you, so, watch it !!!!! Later, as Levels progress, monsters run away.
Mark Plott Wow, that's so fucking awesome! It's amazing they were able to pack even more things into the already brilliant world map, it's quite astonishing actually! Well, I suppose the 3DS has a bit more horsepower than the PS2 which might make this seem less impressive to some, but I always find the game a marvel to play or even watch even on the PS2. Thank you for the info, man! I appreciate it for sure! See, a few years back I seen a review of this game on a channel called Greg Wolf Reviews or something like that. While it wasn't bad, he clearly didn't do the proper research and gave some class information, one thing being that he claimed you could see ALL the eneimes on the map, but he was called out for it a bit much I thought. He also referred to Jessica as "fan-service" which didn't win him any new fans there either lol...She looked hot, but she was also a compelling character and fun to use in combat! Anyway, it always been clear HCG does his homework and has a true love for games, and I hated to even ask since I respect him so much, ya know? Now I've seen the clips in his video showing normal enemies in the field, but thanks for making it clear and being so cool about it! This doesn't happen enough on YT so I figure it's worth a rim job. Your welcome ;D. Hahah
What a wonderful series. So glad to see it getting love from the fans and support from square-enix as well as nintendo. Whoever is out there from either company reading these comments I just wanna say ty for the support with this series
I just finished Dragon Quest XI on the PS4 and I came back here remembering you did a review on it to know whether or not I should get Dragon Quest VIII for the 3DS. I wanted to get the PS2 version but the added features to the 3DS can't be passed up. Dragon Quest XI was my first game in the series and has made me into a Dragon Quest fan!
a few years back I went to Goodwill thrift store and they had a Dragon's Quest VIII demo disc still in the factory seal. I bought it for 50 cents !! I still have it to this day!
I'm glad people will get to play this masterpiece of a game, but I'd just like to say that the graphics and music were better in the PS2 version; look up comparison videos if you don't believe it. The 3DS version is a port from the mobile app version, which was downgraded graphically from the PS2 to fit the mobile capabilities. And they changed the music from the English exclusive real symphonic version, back to a more electronic version. Such a shame they had to do that, but I suppose the additional content in the 3DS version can make up for these shortcomings.
I remember being a kid , and my mom took me to toys R us way back I’m 2005 , and I simply got this game because it came with another game for free lol , and wow It became one of my favorite games of all time
Glad to hear it transferred well. I'll be picking it up soon. Been playing Dragon Quest/Warrior since I was a kid. Dragon Quest VIII is probably my favorite RPG of all time and in the running for favorite game of all time. Played it again on PS2 a couple years ago and it was still brilliant. Happy to hear the excitement in the video, spread the Dragon Quest love!
I was really doubting if playing this one... 50 seconds in, you completely bought me, with your words, and those small cutscenes ! Good story, good visuales, equipment changes, I think this is it, I'll play this
the alchemy pot speed up is needed. I remember having to move in order for the pot to work. crafting the metal slime sword took forever. picked this up today, looking foward to revisiting one of my favorite games. thanks for review.
This still to this day stands as the best JRPG I've ever played , looks like they've added all the correct changes to the game without making it too different, the ability to actually run into monsters then go into the actual turn based combat is a brilliant addition and one that i always wished was in place even back on the day for not only this but all random encounter JRPGs back then
So far I've only played Dragon Quest 9. I recently bought 8 cuz I've heard so many good reviews about it. My only complaint so far is when you equip armor, your outfit doesn't change. Aside from that it's nice (currently preferring 9 though)
I got about 20 hours in as a kid, but traded my copy in for FF12. I bought another ps2 copy and I’m about 3/4 into the ps2 version. I found Walmart selling 2dsxl for $99 and grabbed a copy of DQ8 on eBay because I knew id want to replay it. I don’t know if either version has enough to beat DQ11s for my top spot, but I’m glad there are enough changes to truly make it worth replaying.
DQVIII is my personal favorite in the series, it's the only one that I've completed in both English and Japanese. My 3DS collection is pretty slim, I just might have to pick this one up.
Usually when they port a PS2 game to the 3DS, it loses detail. Also didn't they remove the orchestrated music for midi in the 3DS one? This and the fact I don't care for the portability, I'll just stick to the PS2 version. It's cool that they added things and made additions though.
It's actually a port from the mobile version not directly from the PS2 so it's extra crappy. Hey at least it's still an amazing game even if the audio and visuals are objectively better in the PS2 version.
wow i was blown away by this game back in 2007. amazing world, amazing music...great memories. now finally i can play DQXI definitive edition on my PS4 pro!
8 was the 1st DQ game that square had a hand in if my memory serves.. I remember how much I loved 8 over 7, 7 was just so slow and long, it was a total slog
Not psyched about the lower resolution. (Though not a deal breaker.) Not psyched about the lower sound quality, but I can always connect it to some real speakers. Not psyched about the photo mode... But PSYCHED AS ¤$@£€ about the new ending! ... Because priorities.
I'm not sure what you mean by that... The original release of DQ8 was, of course, for the PS2, and its release was... some 11-13 years ago, depending on your region...? I know bugger all about how they planned the port, though.
Arve Eriksson I'm Speaking of the Japanese version which has Symphonic Soundtrack and came out in 2014. It was developed along side DQ 7 3DS. back then they had no New 3DS (XL), so both games got downgraded and was optomised for the OLD 3DS. Its why DQ7 3ds is Laggy when you access the menus, while DQ 8 3ds shows lag when loading screens, switching from overland to a Battle or a cut scene .
In an age of modernized jrpgs that are actually worth your time (I feel that the late ps4/xb1/switch-current gen finally got it right), it’s nice to play a meat and potatoes JRPG, that’s where VIII and XI really succeed. I’m curious as to how XII will be handled, will it still be turn based, will they still use bird studio aesthetics, etc.
As a Gamecube kid, dragon Quest (no VIII here in Europe) was the only game that made me want a PS2. It came out when Dragonball Z was at its height of popularity here in Germany. I could only dream of the epic adventure. Never got it and I can't tell if I would have actually liked it back then. I had never play an RPG before.
hey Johnny I was wondering which game should I buy first? Dragonquest 8 or fire emblem echoes? I love both of these gameplay styles but I don't know which one to get first.
How is the music. I really love the soudtrack from the PS2 version being fully orchestrated. How does the 3DS sound. Any differnet with headphones. I usually use headphones with my 3DS.
I've got it on the PS2... the version with the extra demo disc of Final Fantasy 12. I even have the four original party member figures... Angelo, Jessica, Yangus, and the Hero.
I love this game! It's my favorite DQ and one of my top 10 games of all Time! Thanks for the great review Johnny ill defiantly give this game another play through in the 3ds!
I only played the PS2 version and i do remember it being exceptional. Even the Metal Slime farming in the end game was somewhat fun, even though the world itself doesn't feel as lively as other RPGs on the system, mainly FF XII.
Just got a new 2DS XL in 2019 and DQ 7 and 8 and other great AAA exclusives and can't wait to get into it!! Thanks to this vid I'll be starting with DQ 8!!!
Got it for PS2 Christmas Eve '06 but only play it in spurts.. Long and epic.. Still got a ways to go.. Arguably the greatest straight up RPG ever.. You need a lot of time!
How much level grinding does it have? I have played mainly Pokémon but I have played other rpgs like Lunar Silver Star Harmony which had the bosses level based on the main character's current level.
Favorite jrpg of all time , love this game . I only wish they had the orchestrated music on the 3ds , that music is so nostalgic to me know it's such and amazing sound track .
You've completed your mainline dragon quest DS/3DS collection. Now all you have to do is find the spin-off games Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 1 & 2 for all of them in total.
I remember playing this game along with the DQ V Remake on PS2. These two are the best in the series and the first Dragon Quests I have ever beaten. While the 3DS version does look worse I will be playing this damn fine game for that additional content alone. Might try different character builds as well
Just picked this up along with a new 2dsxl and I'm completely blown away!! I also got a bunch of other jrpgs for the system. I feel like I've been wasting my time on xbox and playstation over the last 5 years. The 3ds/2ds/ds has the most amazing JRPGS I've ever played! (Even better than the PSX in my opinion) And this time I'm going for the ride with the Switch. Hopefully along the years it will bring just as many great Jrpgs.
Great Review man, you just sold me on it. I’ve only played dragon warrior 1 and Dragon Quest 5. Dragon Quest 8 is on sale currently on Nintendo E Shop for $27.99, think I might have to buy it now.
Hey man, i plan on playing this game, i have my brothers 3DS version and i have my own PS2 version, which one do you recommend? i like the 3DS versions ability to see the monsters. makes farming metal slimes easier early game so you can power level. but hows farming/leveling on the ps2 version?
Oh wow I didn't know they made the enemies visible on the field. That would actually tip me towards getting it. Even though I love older JRPGs, I find I just can't play games with random combat much anymore.
Dragon Quest VIII is like really good home made spaghetti, comfort food for the classic RPG gamer soul. And no, that isn't just a metaphor. I would often literally make spaghetti dinner while my wife played the monster arena in this; something to do with the host guy there. But hey, maybe that's just me. I did grow up as a Nintendo kid and played the first four games back then and occasionally revisit them to this day.
I'm buying DQ VII and VIII at the same time. Which should I play first? You said in your other vid that VII is a "grindy" game and it may take one to play it for 120hrs? So is playing VIII first a better idea? I actually played all the DQ games in NDS, including DQMJoker, and I loved them all....my fave so far is DQ IX.:-).
Love the video! I played this on the PS2 back when it came out and loved the hell out of it. It helped get me through a really hard time in my life, so it's one of my favorite games. But I had the dirtiest trick to speed up the alchemy pot (sorry if someone else already posted this down below). I would find a solid object in the game where it let me push the analog stick up all the time on the controller and keep running forever because the alchemy pot was based on character footsteps. Then I'd put my shoe on the analog stick to hold it up. Just funny to remember the crap I would do to get an item in the game quicker. I was really into it.
Can't wait for the release day. My first games from the series is DQJ 1&2 and DQ 7,8, and 9. There isn't a excuse not to play them seeing as there on Android phone as well.
This is my first Dragon Quest game. I bought it as one of the first games along with my 2DS because I wanted to play it, but could never find a copy for PS2. I have yet to finish it and even erased my save to start over. I WILL finish this game. Might play it alongside my playthrough of Chrono Trigger. Toriyama is the best!
I remember buying the ps2 version just so I could play the demo of final fantasy 12. I remember being pleasantly very surprised with this game as it was my first and only dragon quest I've ever played. I remember this game was fucking massive and I spent way more time just walking around exploring than I did progressing the story. I never finished it but i might have to go back and try to finish it because the story was pretty good. It is a shame though as I can tell visually, the ps2 version blows this one out of the water
Can't wait for Dragon Quest XI
what the fuck are you doing here
I have been watching Johnny for about 5 years now
Fair enough, just didn't think of you as the type of guy to watch this channel.
Don't judge a book by its cover :)

its 2017 MIDI soundtracks are outdated. The orchestral was beautiful. The graphics are downgraded as well.

DQ8 is my favorite game of all time! Highly recommend it to any RPG lover!!🙌
Indeed, DQ 4, 5, and 8 are my favorites.
DQ 8 3DS is a 4 Year old game designed for the Origional 3DS not the New 3DS.
Ok, now I understand. I find it a bit strange how the games would lag at those points, though, but I guess that's another discussion altogether.
I will defenetly buy 8. Got in to dragon quest after buying dragon quest 7 on the 3ds after watching your review.
Appreciate this review. Sounds like this will be my entry into DRAGON QUEST proper after enjoying my time with DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS.
This is what I love about you - a fellow love for Dragon Quest... my favorite series. :)
You give me nostalgia at this point bro! Love your content!
I miss the old soundtrack.
So happy right now, just bought DQ8 for 3ds and it will be my first entry in the series!
hey Johnny I was wondering which game should I buy first? Dragonquest 8 or fire emblem echoes? I love both of these gameplay styles but I don't know which one to get first.
I've never played a Dragon Quest game. After watching this review of DQ VIII, you sold me on the idea of playing one. Starting with VIII!
You just hyped me up so much right now... I need this game!!
I can't wait to play this man. I knew it was coming to 3DS but didn't know until recently that it had additional content. So excited!
im finishing 5 , so soon!
This is one of the videos that got me into Dragon Quest. I loved this game!
Now they need to remake Final Fantasy 1-6 on the Switch!
In one cartridge
In Octopath Traveller graphical style please.
You've completed your mainline dragon quest DS/3DS collection. Now all you have to do is find the spin-off games Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 1 & 2 for all of them in total.
I think the last game, besides persona 5, that I finished completely was Dragon Quest VIII.
(Even better than the PSX in my opinion)
And this time I'm going for the ride with the Switch. Hopefully along the years it will bring just as many great Jrpgs.
Great Review man, you just sold me on it. I’ve only played dragon warrior 1 and Dragon Quest 5. Dragon Quest 8 is on sale currently on Nintendo E Shop for $27.99, think I might have to buy it now.
loving the beard dude :) always great watching your videos on anything Dragon Quest :)
Hey man, i plan on playing this game, i have my brothers 3DS version and i have my own PS2 version, which one do you recommend? i like the 3DS versions ability to see the monsters. makes farming metal slimes easier early game so you can power level. but hows farming/leveling on the ps2 version?
0.36 glad you said so since i jsut ordered it and have never played one before.
Thanks to your review, ive chosen this one to start, bro. Ty for your time.
I'm really excited to get into VIII since I didn't get around to playing it back in the day!
I love your videos. Your passion for video games is so contagious! Can't wait to play Dragon Quest 8.
2024 - Just started playing this version of the game and I'm having a lot of fun so far.
I'm literally playing 7 right now. Grinding the slime forest for job XP. Good review, I got this one preordered and can't wait to give it a shot.
Just beat this game. Without a doubt one of the best games I have ever played. Simply wonderful!
You know you're doing well for yourself when publishers start sending you review copies :)
Just started playing it and am hooked. Once I'm done I'll be going back to 11 as I dropped it around 10 hours in
This is my first Dragon Quest game.
