I've only played 9, but it is definitely one of my favorite rpg's of all time. The DS was a gateway for a lot of the current generation of gamers and I think 9 did an excellent job of introducing us into traditional, turn based rpgs. Besides pokemon, 9 was my first gateway into that genre and it will always be special to me. I really have it to thank for getting me interested in things like Bravely Default, Chrono Trigger, and FF 6.
Dragon Quest VIII was sooo good but sadly is underrated by many who passed up on the game. It was the DBZ art design that made me purchase the game but it was the continuing enjoyment of the game that kept me coming back to play it year after year.
michael preller The replay value got me hooked. With a lot of the DS re-releases as well as VIII you can replay and have so many different experiences! Do a run through with swords as a main weapon then the next time do boomerangs! If you want some real fun on VIII run with fisticuffs on everyone! So many combinations and so much customization, it brings me back time and time again.
VIII is great. I got this one for my wife to play on her PS2 and watched her play it a lot. The monster arena host guy always made me want to make spaghetti for us at the time and I often did. I'll probably have to pick up VII at some point for her too, and maybe V and VI. I was an NES kid and played all the Dragon Warrior games on it and still have and enjoy them to this day. They are quintessential, genre defining games, in my opinion, and still probably my favorite game series overall. But anyway, yeah, VIII was a lot of fun and the art style of it is perfection.
I need to replay DQ8. I remember getting it after seeing some ads in magazines and being pretty terrible at it, mostly due to my young age. I didn't grind enough and ended up deep in the first dungeon getting knocked around by nearly every encounter. Upon reaching the boss I was immediately destroyed. My absolute destruction turned me off from the game, being the stupid little snot that I was, but I have since heard its praises sung by so many and I really should return to it. Funnily enough similar stories can be told about about a dozen other games that I should also pick up again.
I suggest getting the iPad version and the Game Guide. I have two saved games , one before I had the guide and one when I started over the game from beginning but with guide, my hero and cohorts are stronger.
I’ve been playing a lot of XI and wanted to see a series retrospective. After watching a few duds I found your two videos. This was exactly what I was looking for! Very well put together. Nice job!
Johnny I gotta say, these last two videos have been some of your best ever. The production on them is amazing. Great job man. And very informative, as some one who has never played the series.
Dragon Warrior Monsters 1+2 are a staple of my childhood. Absolute must play.

>sees Dragon Quest in the "Recommended videos" tab I FOUND MY PEOPLE Currently finished DQ IX, almost done with VIII, halfway with IV and the rest are moot. Once I start say...DQ V up, take a break, and then play another DQ game, I fall in love with the series all over again.
VIII was my first DQ game. I've played a few others since, but that's the one that made me fall in love with the series. It really is quite a masterpiece.
Epic two part-er! What initially drew me to the series was the fantastic Akria Toriyama artwork, which was lovingly brought to life on the DS remakes (my first DQ games). I think Nintendo did well to support the series these last few years outside of Japan and I'm hopeful we'll also get the 3DS DQ7 update along with DQ10 at some point.
I could not agree more! I was addicted to that game...maxed out my characters, gave each a tambourine to "Psyche" each other up, and completed the ultra-hard extra dungeon. When I finally decided to finish the main boss...I walked through him as if he were made of yogurt! Mmmmm, delicious!
I became a fan of Dragon Quest when I was a kid. It was my birthday present to get a PlayStation 2 and a couple of games. I am so glad I chose Dragon Quest 8. It remains one of my most favorite games of all time. I'm hopeful that 10 will come to the States someday
This was a nice video. I agree about DQVIII. They really did an amazing job with upgrading it, but still keeping that fresh old school RPG feel. It was the first RPG that I took seriously and thanks to it I got hooked not only to other DQ games, but to most other games, RPGs especially. It made me look differently on all the games and appreciate them seperately.
Yes it is, it's "real" instruments but they are sequenced through MIDI and played out through a synthesizer. A synthesizer can sound like a violin or a cello, no problem. In fact that's a Hollywood staple for many years now, they overlay live orchestras with MIDI notes to give thicker sound.
Love the DQ series reviews, Johnny. Only one thing I wanted to add about Heartbeat is that they made the remake of 3 using 6s engine and the remake of 4 (PS version) using 7s engine :). Some of heartbeats developers later joined Nintendo and renamed themself to Genius Sonority and have made some notable games like Pokemon colosseum and XD on gamecube.
This was a delight to watch, thanks for making this series overview. As a side note, 8 was my introduction to the series. However, it was a translated rom of the SNES Dragon Quest 5 that got me into the series. Since then, I've completed 4, 6, and 9 on DS as well, though 5 is easily my favorite due to the sheer scope of the story. I have never played an RPG so legitimately immersive before or since, let alone with a silent protagonist. Honestly, I thought this was only a feat games like Zelda or Ys were capable of, but I am so glad to be wrong. It was quite a thrill to see the mysterious Celestians from 5 brought to the forefront in 9, as well. I believe it might be my favorite title in the series in terms of gameplay mechanics, though 8 is a huge rival there, as well.
140 hours for VII!!!....I'm about to start VI on my play through of the DQ series. VII will be a long haul, for sure! Hopefully it's super enjoyable, like this video! :D
ragnar, alena, taloon, mara, nara, hero (I named my hero "Eden") dragon warrior 4 chapters of the chosen was an awesome game - my all time favorite, in fact.
I am 42 and when i was in my 30's I webt to QW VII on PS1 and so on I also picked up the DQ monster games when i used to have a DS but with only a PS2 and PS3 only 2 of the series shows up . I would love to see a PSN upgraded versions like DQ8 at least of the 1-7.
DragonQuest XI will always be my favorite DS game, and I never even got the chance to play with friends xD he didn't mention that if you play solo, you create a team to come with you and I LOVED that feature ^_^ it felt like I was making my own story with a crew of characters I created
+RaybayTheDinosaur I believe you mean DQ IX, but what made it so good? I enjoy having my characters have preset personalities and what not. And feel as if like it would be as if I played FF1 again. (which I did not enjoy ha) If that makes sense. I enjoyed VIII, VII and V very much.
I feel u brother me too, I never had friends who played dragon quest until secondary, and I wrote back story's for each member of my party some were sad and dark, and thier story's effected there looks and btw u wrote XI that's 11 u mean IX that's 9 , happy mistake
I think that stems from Johnny mostly just giving overviews of the games rather then him re-telling his experience with the games even though he did do that with a few of them. Still, all in all great work HCG!
Wow what a journey! Thanks Johnny! Being the gamer that I am I am sometimes shocked at myself for not playing any DQ game. At all. I need to rectify this.
I would recommend Dragon Quest IV on the DS for the first one. I started with Dragon Quest 1 and wasn't that into it but when I played Dragon Quest IV I got hooked and love the series now. IV and V are my favorites in the series as well.
VIII was the first DQ game that I completed (very long overdue). I played the first one, then didn't play another until 8. Somehow I missed VII (as I never owned a SNES, but did own a Playstation). I'm glad I got it. It's interesting to note that the title was changed back to "Dragon Quest," from this game onward.
One of the first few things that made me realize I'd love DQ8 was the music. I've heard the sequenced music that the Japanese version got and it's not bad, but the orchestral music of the NA release is just on another level. On 9, I'm only about 9 hours in but I just found the strategy guide for like 8 bucks so I'll probably explore further with that handy. The save file that was on my cart when I got it had about 110 hrs I think; shame I couldn't have two saves otherwise I'd have kept it too
The Dragon Quest series is what got me into RPGs when I was a kid. 7 was the first I played and I loved it, though I never got around to beating it until a few years ago. I later got 1&2 and 3 on the GBC and loved those, especially 3, which is my favorite in the series, followed by 8 and 5. I so hope that 3 gets a Virtual Console port as it's fairly tough to play my original copy of it on the GBC.
I was expecting to see a platform game i used to play back in the 90's at the arcade...where "Fly" the protagonist, appeared in a flying cloud... We used to call it dragon ball. I cannot find it anywhere... I swear i wasn't dreaming
I played no.7 and Torneko as a kid but never got to finish it (someone accidentally threw away my PS1 uber upset over it- I put it in a box while I was cleaning my room and someone thought it was trash). I LOVED the time travelling aspect of it (and how things got affected by what you did in the past), so unique at the time.
Dragon Quest 8 was my first experience with the series. I saw commercials for it and was like meh. . . then i walked into my local gamespot a week later and they had the game running on the ps2 kiosk. i gave it a shot. i got hooked, the next thing i know i look at my watch and realized i had been standing there for over 2 hours playing it. I smiled, turned around and asked for a copy. Still one of my favorite games for the console (really close between DQ8 and Shadow Hearts 2 and Persona 3 FES)
You simply have to play 8. It is according to many, the greatest jrpg ever made. It is very classical in design, but the execution is absolutely perfect. It is one of my top 5 favorite games ever.
I just got the GB versions of I, II & III and am going to be playing them on my Super GB. Surprisingly I never got to play these when they came out. Phantasy Star was my first JRPG.
hell yeah. I absolutely LOVE Dragon Quest. (actually I think that might be an understatement) I've actually drawn three of the game's enemies. Slime, Hammerhood, and Brownie. (Hammerhood and Brownie being drawn on the same sheet)
I think that you should make another video where you talk about a bunch of your personal experiences with this game. My favorite videos are the ones where you and/or Rob sit there and reminisce about your experiences with each of the games (my favorite video being "Strange Arcade Tales")
I got Dragon Quest VI for the Super Famicom for Christmas when I was in 4th or 5th grade. I never knew it cost my dad $100; no wonder I only got one present that year, lol.
Dragon Warrior VII was amazing. I also own that Torneko game for the Playstation. It's got a unusual gameplay mechanic, but it's pretty fun though it can be frustrating as well. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 is great. I've been playing through that lately for the first time.
I still remember when dragon quest 8 first came out. I was around, 6 or 7 at the time and BEGGED my dad every time we would go somewhere if he would buy it for me (it looked like dbz so I was instantly hooked to the cover) but sadly, I never got my hands on it. One day Im going to buy a newer dragon quest game and try it out. I love jrpg's so hopefully these games will be my new cup of tea
I only really knew about the Dragonquest series on the NES. And i've loved those. This videos have been very informative, and made me want to play the other versions.
I would highly recommend Dragon Quest 8 for the Playstation 2. Its easily one of the best (if not the best one) and , while transporting a classical DQ experience to a "modern" system and its easy to get into. IX on the DS is ok but definitely not one of the best ones. You may also like the classic SNES style RPG experience that has DQ remake of part V and VI on the DS.
I have nostalgia for all of the early ones. I got the 1st one with the magazine subscription, then rented part 2 from a place called "thrifty video" until I beat it, same with part 3. Part 4 I bought from someone in high school and it was also great.
After all these years of not having them in my collection..I recently bought Dragon Warrior 1 boxed for the NES, Dragon Quest 8(And the guy I bought this one from was nice enough to throw in the guide for free), and Dragon Quest 10..Yeah I picked up a Japanese copy of Dragon Quest 10 mainly because I seen someone selling it with the soundtrack..Granted I can't play this copy..I can still listen to the soundtrack at any given time now. :) On top of owning those though I also have Dragon Quest 9(cart only..ugh..cost me a bit too much to..I paid 10$ for it but at least I can enjoy it) and Dragon Quest 6 for the DS. :D Greatest RPG series ever in my opinion. Need to hunt down the rest and get 7 into my collection again..I owned 7 at one point but it ended up in the pawn shop the first time I had a PS1..My mom always pawned off my collection when I was younger. NOT ANYMORE MA! YOU HEAR ME?! haha
I enjoyed your review(s). I would have liked to have a seen some discussion on the Dragon Warrior Monsters Gameboy games, too. Cobi's Journey / Tara's Adventure were very fun to play!
Johnny, I love watching your show (all the way from Liverpool England!), I check UA-cam religiously for any new vids you may have posted. One question for maybe a show further down the line, would you ever consider doing a Q & A show? I - and probably many others - have a lot of questions that as yet are unanswered, either about your gaming history/games room/anything else. Keep up the excellent work :)
dragon quest 9 was the best one in my opinion i would say 8 but ive never been able to play it and although im glad they are making heros for the ps4 i woud have liked if they made a sequel to dq 9
+drates Dragetes VIII is by far in a league of its own. The customization, roaming, detail etc. I could list for days! And a 3ds remake is coming next year!
awesome Johnny! really enjoyed the coverage of the entire series of DQ! currently i am playing through DQ VI and man is it ever awesome! totally worth every penny!!
as usual Japan kept everything for themselves . SE did a HQ remake od DQ 1 - 2 - 3 on the Wii, it never made it to America but you can play the them if you got Android or IOS, I have them all on my iPAD, beautifully done. I hope one day Nintendo will do DQ 1 - 2 - 3 on a multicart for the 3DS.
Still one of your best videos I reckon. Would love to see a follow up to this regarding all the spin off games like the Monsters series, Builders and Heroes etc.
I wish I knew about the Game Deals meet! I feel as though I may be one of the only few people in the greater Vancouver area that loves DQ! That hang out session would've been awesome! If only I knew about your channel sooner man!
Very informative and thought out review of a very interesting historic series into the RPG genre. Embarrassingly DQ8 is my first instalment into the series, and having read the wiki and watched informative videos like this, i've learnt a lot about the history of the game. I'll definitely venture into the past and play these old gems.
I would kinda go with 8. Not only was it my first DQ game it was my first turn-based game and i love the hell out of it. My roommates where making fun of me because i was in my late 20's and asking them questions on how turn based games work.
Also, you should've mentioned the Google April fools from i think last year, where they changed google maps to be in the style of dragon quest, called 8-bit google maps or something like that. It had the music and everything. It was awesome
Love the series, and wish I could find the time to play them all! Maybe I will someday. It's awesome that Kim has a goal to beat them all. Great series review Johnny!
I would start out with one of the DS remakes or Dragon Quest 9. If you take a liking to the series, I'd definitely check out the rest of the games in the series. Dragon Warrior 1 is rather dated, so you may want to check out an updated port of that game (Western audiences received the GBC Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 remake.)
Looking at getting the MSX versions of these and giving them a go, still reasonably easy to get hold of due to the Japanese text. Most MSX RPG's are reasonably prices, even the Y's series really.
I have an unusual copy of DQVIII which isn't the main game, it must be a sort of side story that they brought out. Great review Johnny, got me very interested in tracking these games down.
I love Dragonquest but im from Germany and here in Europe the first DQ game that was released here was DQ8 o.o. Ive imported some of the US games by now and got some DS titles. Its a shame that we even got treated worst than you in the US. They should have released all DQ games world wide!
Really enjoyed this series review Johnny. Not sure if you guys have been checking out the PC Beta for DQ X, but it's awesome. You should tell your significant other about it ;) Really hoping for a Western release so I might actually understand what the heck is going on. Anyways, really loved this series recap, and can't wait for more DQ-related videos in the future :)
Holy moly this has a lot of comments, Johnny, you can't possibly read them all, but I know you say you do! Must be a full-time job! Loved this overview of the series, but what I was really wishing for was for you to talk about your memories with each of the Dragon Quest games. Would love it if you made a video on each! I know you've talked about Dragon Warrior 1 some, and there was a whole video about skipping school to play DW2. :) But I still want more!
Excellent job as always. I think the scripting is necessary for a retrospective so large in scope. Looking forward to the review of Dragon Quest Swords, which I thought was actually quite good, despite it somewhat lukewarm reception stateside.
Expected to hear at least a mention of the Dragon Quest Monsters spin offs, but still, awesome overview! Got a soft spot for DQM since I played it before Pokemon, it's how I think a monster catching RPG should be ;) To each their own of course!
I spend over 800 hours on DQ IX and i totally agree with you.
Dragon quest 9 was my first and will always hold a special place in my heart
I cried when Greanarl battled babarosa and sacrificed himself.
Dragon quest 9 divided fans but it was still the best selling of the series in both Japan and the west
Dragon Quest VIII was sooo good but sadly is underrated by many who passed up on the game. It was the DBZ art design that made me purchase the game but it was the continuing enjoyment of the game that kept me coming back to play it year after year.
DID YOU KNOW IT WAS DRAWN BY AKIRA TORIYAMA
farid hassan
yup, and I love its art style. One top of being a great game it is also very beautiful.
Angelo = Trunks !!!!!!!!
michael preller The replay value got me hooked. With a lot of the DS re-releases as well as VIII you can replay and have so many different experiences! Dragon Quest 9! Yeah! This is my favorite game in the series, and is one of my favorite games of all!
Hells yeah brother!
It's hard as hell, but in a damn good way!
***** I think the story is just okay. It's not the best nor the worst.
That's just me though. XD
***** That is true, but I do like the other characters in it. I do honestly think that Coffinwell had the best type of set up for me. :D

BUT did you also play dragon quest monster joker?
ragnar, alena, taloon, mara, nara, hero (I named my hero "Eden")
dragon warrior 4 chapters of the chosen was an awesome game - my all time favorite, in fact.
Great video. Yeah, DQ 9 was my first too and I LOVED it. Trying to get y hands on some of the older ones now to play.

I think IX on the Nintendo DS might be the best to start with. It was my first Dragon Quest game and now I'm hooked on the series.
I think that stems from Johnny mostly just giving overviews of the games rather then him re-telling his experience with the games even though he did do that with a few of them. Still, all in all great work HCG!

Can't wait. :)
Absolutely, both are great. It would make the experience better if you had a friend playing too
I only really knew about the Dragonquest series on the NES.
Dragon quest and Fire Emblem are the only series out there where I really look forward to alot.
On top of owning those though I also have Dragon Quest 9(cart only..ugh..cost me a bit too much to..I paid 10$ for it but at least I can enjoy it) and Dragon Quest 6 for the DS.
YOU HEAR ME?! haha
Thanks for the tour throgh the DQ universe, Johnny! It was lotsa fun to watch!
Looking forward to future videos.
Dragon Quest 8...the game that taught me to hoard items. I wanted to make everything in that Alchemy Pot.
Sometime I wish they could remade Original Dragon Quest Trilogy for on 3DS, like keep the same storyline you know stuff like that.
as usual Japan kept everything for themselves .
DQ 1 - 3 had 3ds remakes exclusively in Japan
We never got (here in europe) several DQ games until the DS games and DQ 8, i really hope DQ VII will come out on the 3DS over here as well!
Finished DQIV on DS yesterday and started on V, clearing out a haunted castle was fun.
nice review. I started late in the series with DQVIII and was hooked myself and now I want to go through it.
Dragon Quest Joker 1 & 2 anybody? Those are the ones that brought me here
These vids are awesome. Keep up the good work and we'll keep watching!!
i love the alchemy pot in dq8. making strong medicine to make quick gold early on was awesome.
Only played Dragon Quest 9, but it was amazing
Great retrospective HCG, I've never played a DQ game but thanks to this video, I'll give them a try!
Forgot to mention the Dragon Quest 25th anniversary collection from Japan. :P
*****
I mention it in my DRAGON QUEST COLLECTION video
DRAGON QUEST COLLECTION
+HappyConsoleGamer Can u plz make a Final Fantasy review collection ?
I love DQ6, it is the most nostalgic game for me and I played the noprogress patch way back when I was 7
DQ9 on DS is perfect for me, as I made the transition to being dedicated to handhelds quite a while ago. It's just handy to play a handheld :D
Ad for Dragon Warrior 4 on PS1....I just looked and it really is there. Kind of wish that really happened.
dragon quest 8 was so good. one of my favorites. such an overhaul in the series.
this review was awesome. makes me wanna pick up the ds titles.
It would be so awesome if they released Dragon Quest 8 on PS4 with trophies, with the PS2 classic like Dark Cloud and Twisted Metal Black
DQ8 was also the first released in the UK and (if i'm correct) Europe.
Ya
That would be cool... but the full 3D remake on the 3DS looks pretty awesome too.
Love the series, and wish I could find the time to play them all! Maybe I will someday. It's awesome that Kim has a goal to beat them all. Great series review Johnny!
IX was amazing! I remember downloading items in McDonalds via their wifi. I got a red afro. lol. I was so into this game then.
I was sad then they shut down the DQ IX servers.
Great video as always! I just bought DQ VI, IX and VIII so I´m looking forward to start playing.
You make me want to go find some folks to play IX with again. Great videos!!!
I'd like to point out that Yangus from DQVIII also received his own game which was only released in Japan.
I loved Dragon Warrior so much that I took the tv cart into the bathroom so that I could level up while I crapped.
Awesome ending to a great retrospective.
Excited for 7 on 3DS?
Justin D. I didn't even know it was coming in English. I played the Japanese one a few years ago.
Excellent job as always. I think the scripting is necessary for a retrospective so large in scope. Looking forward to the review of Dragon Quest Swords, which I thought was actually quite good, despite it somewhat lukewarm reception stateside.
Great job man, love your vids. I am currently working on the DS games. I finished 9 and I always loved the originals.
DQ 8 was just amazing, completed everything for the 1st time last month and was shocked at how good it was...
Expected to hear at least a mention of the Dragon Quest Monsters spin offs, but still, awesome overview! Got a soft spot for DQM since I played it before Pokemon, it's how I think a monster catching RPG should be ;) To each their own of course!
