Agreed, the background is pixelated SNES like, the characters are like high res versions of SNES sprites and the monsters look like flash player. It looks like a cheap knock off with assets pasted in from various sources. Any one would be better if it were consistent.
I wish more companies included the original games with the remakes like they used to. And the original DQ trilogy has so many versions, a lot of them fully translated, this could've been a really awesome package. Imagine having in the all together the nes verions, snes, gbc, wii and mobile. And let the player decide what experience they want to have.
I wish these ports had the option to pick & choose between the NES, the SNES & "modern" versions of the trilogy's music & graphics. For example: what if I wanted to play the game the NES sprites, but with the modern music or vice versa.

I don’t hate the art style as much as the ff5/6 ports, but they still trampled over the original style a bit. Would’ve really appreciated if they provided an option for the NES or even SNES graphics like you said. But aside from that nitpick, these games are still incredible. I got into the series through them just a couple years ago and fell in love after playing 2 and 3. The pixel art holds up fantastic and the gameplay is timeless. Such amazing open worlds that just ooze adventure every step along the way. DQ2 will always be my favorite because the challenge- not only in battle, but piecing together everything you have to do to progress the story. It’s one of those games you gotta take notes on and that always makes it feel more fulfilling imo. Regardless of if I’m gonna replay them sometime soon, I’ll still be buying them all along with DQXI to help show Square we want more Dragon Quest in the West. I have a good feeling XI is finally gonna be the winner in that regard. From the heroes in Smash, to that amazing 10 hour demo, I think the series will finally get the respect and attention it’s deserved all along and I couldn’t be happier about it.
@DwarvishPasty well the DQ 1-3 collection does look pretty low effort to be fair but at least DQ11 has been really well received. DQ10 only needs to be localized, and it would be the only mmorpg on the system if they did it. I think it'd probably be successful, especially considering how much content DQ10 must have at this point.
they did, Nintendo Japan released DQ 1 - 3 on the Wii with Remastered Super Famicom assets and it has a NEW animated opening , the NEW Trailer is on UA-cam - DQ 25th Anniverssary Wii.
These have the same problems as the FF remakes: they look like hobby RPG Maker games. SNES games look great upscaled. It would have been less work to just use the 16-bit versions, so it baffles me why they continue to do this. Even the font choice, while readable, lacks character. I'll stick with the Super Famicom versions.
Man, this is a bummer. I was really hoping they would have an option to use the Super Famicom graphics or something. That enemy artwork kills it for me. Not a fan of the sprites for the characters either...
@@digodinn - its a Crappy port, the wii Edition for the 25th Anniverssary of Dragon Quest was actually BETTER. all Nintendo should have done was Upscale the wii Version, it was perfect.

Glad you mentioned how good the SNES versions of this trilogy are (along with a great review). *I recommend EVERYONE to play the translated SNES versions of these 3 games over this collection.* I already bought part of this collection. I've also played through the Super Famicom DQ trilogy on my SNES classic. Words can't express how much better the experience was on SNES... it's still the best way to experience this trilogy *hands down.*
The problem with the SNES versions is that they lack the updated, modern translation that makes them more in-line with what one would expect out of Dragon Quest. iOS/Android/Switch is your only option if you want that new translation. That being said, if you don't care for the translation, the SNES version of III is indeed the best.
@@BoomerangFlash Actually, that isn't a problem anymore. The translation I use (probably the most popular one) has two versions -- the first of them a very faithful, direct translation (more or less) of the original, and the other version is a looser localization with all the newer terminology used in more recent titles. This alone buries the inferior mobile port. Many other fan-translations for SNES games like Final Fantasy 4-6 have similar options to appease just about any preferences you may have.
For Dragon Quest III? I have seen nothing of the like. The only options for the modern translation are the ports I mentioned, unless I am missing something?
@@BoomerangFlash Annoyingly, I keep getting my comment "shadow deleted" whenever I tell you where to find this... I *really* can't stand the garbage site UA-cam has become, and continues to get worse. Anyway... for Dragon Quest III, just search for it on Vimm's Lair. That's the version I use. Despite the fact it's an older fan-translation than those found on a far more popular site, this is the closest version I've seen to being complete. Personally I've had zero issues with it.
@@BoomerangFlash To be fair the modern DQ translations suck. They are way too different from the original and make changes for the sake of making changes. They are not translations but rewrites, abridged versions if you will from the original. I have learned Japanese over the years and the more I learned the easier is for me to notice the changes.
I did pick up 3, as it's my favorite in the series, and I have to say that the game feels best in handheld mode. One, I grew up with the Gameboy Color ports of 1-3, so I'm use to playing them on a handheld. Two, the new sprites clash with the Snes overworld graphics, and I feel that handheld mode alleviates this to a degree thanks to its lower resolution not touching the backgrounds but lowering the quality of the sprites. My only other problem is with the localization, but that's the nostalgia in me talking. The translation is just fine, I just miss the old names, like Dharma Temple instead of Alltrades Abbey, Blazemost instead of Kafrizzle, Metaly instead of Metal Slime, or Loto instead of Erdrick. Basically just nostalgia talking there.
I remember how in the original games, you used to move across forests at half speed, and mountains one tile at a time. This made sense, but was tedious. It looks like that was removed, but just kept the increased encounter rate. I can live with that.
The original versions had less content, a lot of unnecessary menu shifting...and a butchered localization, so why bother? GBC version is way better, there's a reason why all later versions copy them rather than the inferior NES or SNES versions.
Yep... it's amazing to me how many people just overlook how they sloppily combined two completely different art styles. The goddamn sprite resolution don't even match up with the backgrounds. Ah well... what can you expect from a rushed mobile port. Glad Johnny mentioned how good the SNES versions of this trilogy are. *I recommend EVERYONE to play the translated SNES versions of these 3 games over this collection.* I already bought part of this collection. I've also played through the Super Famicom DQ trilogy on my SNES classic. It's still the best way to experience this trilogy *hands down.*
I remember back in the 90’s there was a “Dragon Quest” board game, was that the reason DQ had to be called dragon warrior? Its ads appeared constantly inside comic books back in the day.
The US already had a Dragon Quest game by another company. Enix had to rename it for obvious reasons. But once the series left for the Super Nintendo they were able to use Dragon Quest again not just in Japan. And that’s what it shall be for all time!
@@Area51official The only problem was that sales outside of Japan weren't good, so after 4, no Dragon Quest games were localized until 7 on the PS1, still under the Dragon Warrior name. It wasn't until the Squenix merger that they used the Dragon Quest name outside of Japan for the 8th installment.
There was a table top RPG like D&D called “Dragon Quest”. They called every game in the West “Dragon Warrior” instead up through 7 on PS1. The remakes on DS were called “Dragon Quest” finally.
Your smoking video is the reason I quit smoking. I've been wanting to and failed over and over. I finished your vid, broke the rest of my pack and haven't smoked for 2 weeks with no issue. They should've just released the SNES remakes. They had upgraded graphics from the NES versions, and fixed some quality of life issues. If you have access to an English translation, they're really the best way to play these games.
It's amazing to me how many people just overlook how they sloppily combined two completely different art styles. The friggin' resolutions don't even match up with the backgrounds. Ah well... what can you expect from a rushed mobile port. Also @EX_094, you're incorrect -- DQ 3 from this collection uses mobile assets. Speaking as someone who has played the translated Super Famicom versions of this trilogy multiple times because it's that damn good, *it looks a lot different, and A LOT better on SNES.* Can't recommend playing the translated SNES versions of this trilogy enough, as Johnny said he'd rather play as well.
@@Hausbrauen It would have been SO much better if they left it as is and did clean integer scaling of the artwork. It would have actually been EASIER to just keep the game's resolution and sprites. It cost them MORE time to make it look bad.
@@Hausbrauen Not only are the sprite resolutions completely different from the world, but the character proportions don't even make sense! Your character towers over the walls, like he could just hop over them. And you look like you wouldn't even fit through any of the doors. I expect that sort of miniaturized representation of land features when you're out on the overworld map, but not when you're INDOORS!
IV is also my personal favorite. Having played it right when it came out, it opened the doors of how much an RPG (or video game, even) could be used for serious storytelling that begs for heavy emotional investment. Quite frankly, it was, and remains, a masterclass In game design. I’ve played each and every sequel and love them all, but IV is woven into my DNA in a way no other game has or ever will be.
You're missing out. I just beat Dragon Warrior. I hadn't played it since I was a kid and beat it on the NES. You get used to the graphics. In fact, I grew to really enjoy them, the music is great, and the gameplay is better than I remembered.
@KawaZrana I grew up on the originals. In fact I get the first one free thanks to Nintendo Power. But with the original not on the Switch, I feel these games are better than nothing. So I do recommend playing these games. 8 out of 10 in my eyes.
For anybody complaining that the “re drawings” don’t look as good… let me tell you something. Nothing was drawn right now, they put the ORIGINAL TORIYAMA drawings from back when the games were planned. The sprites for the Famicom were based on these drawings. Knowing this, that’s why this version is beautiful. Sure the monsters don’t move, but I appreciated the fact that I was looking at the original drawings that Toriyama conceptualizad years back. For fans that complain about this, I’m disappointed you don’t know this. And sure the stuttering is not good, but to be fair it only happens in towns and that’s it, everything else is great. Sure they’re ports of the phones, but they went for this artistic direction and the interface is so much better than the SNES ports in this regard. They’re not bad at all. Highly recommended. Only downside is that DQIII doesn’t have the extra dungeons, but is a minor gripe that will be resolved in the remake that was just announced. This version is still great.
I want to note for anyone interested: the mobile versions are cheaper and they don't have these redrawn sprites or stutter issues. The monster animations are missing in 3 but they're missing on this version too. The only thing that could make the switch version worth it in my opinion is if they added back the content from the gameboy color version which was not included in the mobile version. I haven't heard anyone mention it so I have to assume it's missing.
@@ruadeil_zabelin He's talking about the fact the art style here is heavily conflicting with itself, and the foreground sprite resolutions don't even match up with the backgrounds -- in addition to numerous other sloppy issues frequently seen in rushed mobile ports. Hence the reason it reminds some of a sloppy fan-game from RPG Maker, which I agree with. And btw, any original FF or DQ games on NES or SNES never had any of the above problems. ;)
I might get the Trilogy sometime soon but my main focus is XIS. Glad the series is being pushed and reinforced which it deserves for being grandfather for JRPGs. I have 1&2 on my SNES Classic.
Honestly, after buying all three games and testing them out on the Switch, if you own the mobile versions, then there is no differences. I didn't own them so this was a perfect chance for me to obtain them. Complaint in video are definitely valid and wished we had the option to pick and choose between the SNES style, much perfected pixel style. Overall, still glad with my purchase and neat if you want a fine introduction.
I bought all 3 and I still loved them, currently in 3, ignore the minor stuttering, you know since the games are tile based, and you would know that these are still great games at their cores
I played the first two on an NES emulator and actually really enjoyed them, though having a fast forward feature helped a lot. They're currently 35% off on Switch. I'm getting 'em. I like the new art just fine.
Damn, I really, really wanted to love this, but looks kinda crappy. The monsters are oddly detailed while the rest of the environment is pixel art. The screen stuttering may bother the shit out of me. I own every Dragon Quest game, but I might pass here. There are reproduction SNES carts for DQ 1-2 and DQ 3 in English. I got those and they're pretty well done.
I agree with you... I wanted to really like these games and I've even have paid more for them if they did a better job.... I didn't buy them at all because it does seem like a half-effort?
Man, I love the trilogy games. I wanted to take the time to personally thank you and Kim for pretty much getting me addicted to Dragon Quest as a whole. I watched all your Dragon Quest videos and it got me VERY curious about the series so much that I bought Dragon Quest 11 S for my birthday, which was the 12th of September. I imported the physical game card for this off Play-Asia. VERY glad to get it physically. But yeah, while the scrolling is a wee bit jerky on the first two games (I noticed no stutter in III), it's an amazing collection. Fun fact, this was the first time I was able to beat DQ II when I got this collection. Being mobile game ports means little to me as I don't play mobile games, so meh. I played dragon Warrior 1,2,3 and 4 on the original NES and I still own them so I'm really looking forward to this compilation and getting them on the nintendo DS and 3DS. I wish they would just port them all to the nintendo switch, that would be awesome.
Yes, that was going to be the only way to play these other than registering a HK Switch account, but SE got wind of the demand for the English options so decided a couple weeks ago to release worldwide and not just JPN/ASIA.
I have the mobile versions of the games too and the mobile versions actually use better character sprites than the Switch versions. I believe these versions are actually ports from the PS4 version which explains the bad sprite art compared the the SNES ones on the mobile apps. The HD artwork for the monsters is a bit of a clash in artstyles as well. They left the SNES backgrounds alone so I have no idea why they messed with the sprites or monster images. That stuttering when moving is also not in the mobile release. I have no idea what happened here.
I really would have preferred the Super Famicom versions. I have DQ I and II SFC fantranslated on the SNES Classic but unfortunately III is one of the games that will not work on it. I might still get these, but wait for a sale.
it won't work through the default built in emulator. however there is a workaround. go to the command line and type --retroarch (at the end of the command code) and it will run DQ3 through retroarch instead of the default emulator. it will fix other games too like actraiser 2,which also won't run on the default emu.
yea i think you have to leave a space at the end of the command line, then type --retroarch. it's been awhile since i did it,but i can confirm it works.
I'm glad you mentioned both positives and negatives, unlinked with Final Fantasy 8 remaster where you said how great a port it was when in actuality it was broken, had a ton of problems, and even was censored from the original version...
Yes, DQ5 is the best (at least in my memory), and the DS generation of the DQ 4-6 remake are nicely done. Much better than these 3 on Switch. I wished they used the same engine used in DS DQ remake for DQ 1-3.
@@rwmlui I wish that we could get a proper translation to the PS1 version of IV, it's easily the best version of the game, but it never came out in the west.
DQ4 & DQ5 are probably tied as some of my favorite classic DQ games. If not, some of my favorite DQ games in general. I'm really worried that if they port 4-6 on the Switch, they won't be as an DS version because in my honest opinion, they're the best versions of playing these games. Though DQ4 on the NES still holds up nicely than the previous 3 DQ NES. So I wouldn't mind that.
One thing that really bugs me is that Dragon Quest III's opening with Ortega is missing in this release for some reason. Honestly, they should have just ported the SNES versions of 1-3 over.
I started DQ few weeks ago on my smartphone cos I wanted to play an RPG on the go and FF ports are trash. It was my best buy in hear, currently finishing 2, I get that people wants amazing graphics and stuff, but in smartphone DQ shines.
Quick ways to solve this compilation issues IMO: 1- Make an option to change the graphics to the snes ones 2- Improve the frame-rate so that it doesn't feel like the mobile games 3-Release the first three games on the most important platforms (steam, ps4,xbone,etc) 4-Release the games in the most popular languages, english, german, spanish, italian, french, russian, etc. I know it takes time and money but major videogames such as final fantasy games COME in various languages and have 0 (zero) issues.
I went to Play Asia and pre-ordered the physical copy I played the NES version of the first game but I never played the other two. I hope they do 4-6 next
Definitely the biggest turnoff for me is the new drawings of it. I absolutely adored the original pixel art/sprites, and they really butchered everything by "updating" it. The nostalgia would have been one of the biggest selling points for me, so they kind of just took my favorite part of the originals and got rid of them.
Nemenon I don’t think they would have allowed the 8 bit look as the primary look of the game. It would have been cool if they would have allowed you to switch between the newer and classic look.
@@ThatOldSchoolMagic yeah toggle for switching between old and new would have been optimal. I feel like that applies to a lot of remakes/ports or whatever they are called.
That would be amazing if you could toggle the visuals from modern to NES to SNES!
Or the Game Boy Colored.
I hope Dragon Quest grows more popular in the west so we can finally get DQ10 :)
@DwarvishPasty Well maybe if you and everyone else bought them instead of buying stupid broken sports games we'd have amazing RPGs.
Michael Cordova The same old sports games released every single year Lmao.
Michael Cordova LoL How is buying more gonna improve the quality?

The Dragon Quest 7 remake was awesome, shame they didn’t give 1-3 that kind of treatment
they did, Nintendo Japan released DQ 1 - 3 on the Wii with Remastered Super Famicom assets and it has a NEW animated opening , the NEW Trailer is on UA-cam - DQ 25th Anniverssary Wii.

VII’s remake is really good. I’m playing through it for the first time right now.
Oh god the graphics they did is unbelievably awful. Was looking to get these but eh, I'll just play the original releases.
Plus the character sprites and background tiles have inconsistent pixel sizing
Don't forget the Game Boy Colored ones too. Even for an 8-bit games, they still hold up remarkably well.
Man, this is a bummer. I was really hoping they would have an option to use the Super Famicom graphics or something. That enemy artwork kills it for me. Not a fan of the sprites for the characters either...

@@BigSnipp Your right on That I guess I blamed everyone else for not getting Dragon Quest being the only problem, They don't even market it properly anywhere else besides Japan that's why most of their sales sucked for so long until they marketed 11 right.
Glad you mentioned how good the SNES versions of this trilogy are (along with a great review). *I recommend EVERYONE to play the translated SNES versions of these 3 games over this collection.*
I already bought part of this collection.
The Game Boy Colored ones are the best versions to play those first 3 games.
I remember how in the original games, you used to move across forests at half speed, and mountains one tile at a time. This made sense, but was tedious. It looks like that was removed, but just kept the increased encounter rate. I can live with that.
I don’t have a Nintendo Switch yet but I just got Dragon Quest 1-3 and Dragon Quest 11 for the Switch. I LOVE this game series.
Should've definitely included spoiler warnings. When I got to that reveal, my mind was blown and I had the biggest smile
Wish they would've ported the original versions. What a let down.
Agreed. These version not only look inferior, but there is something off-putting about the idea of playing through imitations of the classics.
You people are strange. It's like you didn't see the original since 1986
@@I_Am_The_Social_Reject You are strange. It's like you think everybody already played the games.

I remember back in the 90’s there was a “Dragon Quest” board game, was that the reason DQ had to be called dragon warrior? Its ads appeared constantly inside comic books back in the day.
Yes.

They should've just released the SNES remakes. They had upgraded graphics from the NES versions, and fixed some quality of life issues. If you have access to an English translation, they're really the best way to play these games.
Ugh, they upscaled then smudged the hell out of the sprites.
They didn't. 1-2 use sprites exclusively made for the mobile ports. 3 uses the SNES sprites, but it isn't smudged to hell and back.

Can you imagine remakes in perhaps the Link's Awakening type of style and for Dragon Quest?

It was my best buy in hear, currently finishing 2, I get that people wants amazing graphics and stuff, but in smartphone DQ shines.
Quick ways to solve this compilation issues IMO:
1- Make an option to change the graphics to the snes ones
2- Improve the frame-rate so that it doesn't feel like the mobile games
3-Release the first three games on the most important platforms (steam, ps4,xbone,etc)
4-Release the games in the most popular languages, english, german, spanish, italian, french, russian, etc.
I know it takes time and money but major videogames such as final fantasy games COME in various languages and have 0 (zero) issues.
I went to Play Asia and pre-ordered the physical copy I played the NES version of the first game but I never played the other two. I hope they do 4-6 next
Havnt watched the channel for a while . Fantastic to see the subs building and still great content
I think a lot of people prefer the original but I like the new sprites. To each their own.

I don’t think they would have allowed the 8 bit look as the primary look of the game. It would have been cool if they would have allowed you to switch between the newer and classic look.
@@ThatOldSchoolMagic This would have been the ideal solution/compromise for sure, just like what they did with DQ11.
@@ThatOldSchoolMagic yeah toggle for switching between old and new would have been optimal. I feel like that applies to a lot of remakes/ports or whatever they are called. I really liked the option to switch between the original Xbox graphics and the new ones in the Master Chief Collection but mainly to see how different it looked.
I believe Falcom's Dragon Slayer would actually be the birth of JRPGs since it predates Dragon Quest 1 by about 1.5 to 2 years.
I will pick them up, and over look the artwork, why? Cause I want more DQ in the West that is why!!!
Dude!!!! I played Dragon Warrior 1 as my first rpg and Erdrick was an unchallenged hero in my head since lol
I wish I had money to burn since clearly everyone has been burning it like they were firewood
JustJulyo we live in a consumer society, get used to it. Nothing wrong with not buying everything in sight, be glad you can’t mindlessly buy. Us poor folks have to think our way through life
@@eleven9286 That thinking you guys are doing obviously isn't working since you're still poor, lol.
When I seen Dragon Warrior on nes I was at a friend's house and wondering why he was concentrated on a screen of a game that looked like something you'd just toss out but the more he focused on it made me wonder what was the fuss, so I sat for a bit and watched the game and from there I was hooked at this imaginary universe where the blanks are filled in with imagination. Good game
so many companies porting mobile games these days... so lazy :-(
this series deserves better
I just realised....when you said during the 2018 Christmas Special that you were gonna wear the Roy Focker jacket in every single episode this year, you really meant it haha! 3 more months and you can change jackets!!!
I can’t stand the AD with the girl screaming it drives me nuts
My first DQ game was DQ4 for the NDS and I got it because HCG reviewed it a few years back and when I got the game, I was hooked. 🤩
ugh, i don't like how these games look. yet another poor remake from s-e. the stuttering cannot be ignored... i would never play these ports. you are FAR better off playing the snes versions via an emulator -- they got an english patch.
Played dragon warrior 3 on the gbc. It was absolutely the best rpg I have ever played
they weren't perfect but I was incredibly happy to finally be able to have a physical copy of these games for a system that I own. I really enjoyed my time with the trilogy and it made me more excited to go and play the other games in the series I haven't played yet. So far I've done 1-3, 8, 11. I have all of them except for 4 and 6 but really want to play them in order now....which makes not having 4 and 6 difficult....man are they difficult to find.
I'm picking all 3 up on the eshop tomorrow, as well as DQ 11S on physical. I'm planning on eventually importing the physical release, too! I have all of the NA Dragon Quest game releases on DS and 3ds. It's exciting that I'll have all of the mainline games other than 10! Oddly, I've only ever finished the original Dragon Warrior on NES.
I personally love these ports. The only downside i think is the frame pacing but everything else is good for me.
Honestly I was expecting them to just localize the snes version but upscale the sprite a bit or just make the sprite look like how it did on the Dragon Quest 4-7, didnt think they'd go for the mobile port aesthetic though
DQ3 and 6 on the SFC were so beautiful best versions hands down.
DQVI may not have looked as good as FFVI, but I still think it's one of the best looking games on the SNES.
Just bought three on sale yesterday, wish I'd watched this review first because these were my thoughts exactly. Ended up playing it on my gbc emulator instead and had a way better experience
