The Chevrolet Corvette (C1) is the first generation of the Corvette sports car produced by Chevrolet. It was introduced late in the 1953 model year, and produced through 1962.[2] This generation is commonly referred to as the "solid-axle" generation, as the independent rear suspension did not appear until the 1963 Stingray.
The Corvette was rushed into production for its debut model year to capitalize on the enthusiastic public reaction to the concept vehicle, but expectations for the new model were largely unfulfilled.[3] Reviews were mixed and sales fell far short of expectations through the car's early years. The program was nearly canceled, but Chevrolet decided to make necessary improvements.
    1961
Twin taillights appeared on the 1961, a treatment that continues to this day. Engine displacement remained at 283 cubic inches, but power output increased for the two fuel-injected engines to 275 and 315 hp (205 and 235 kW). Power ratings for the dual-four barrel engines did not change (245 hp and 270 hp) but this was the last year of their availability.[15] This was the last year for contrasting paint colors in cove areas, and the last two-tone Corvette of any type until 1978. Also debuting in 1961 was a new boat-tail that was carried through to the C2. Rare options: RPO 353 275 hp engine (118), RPO 687 heavy-duty brakes and steering (233), RPO 276 15"×5.5" wheels (357), RPO 473 power convertible top (442).[21]
    1962
With a new larger engine the 1962 model year Corvette was the quickest to date. Displacement of the small-block V8 increased from 283 cu in (4,640 cc) to 327 cu in (5,360 cc), which produced 250 hp (190 kW) in its base single 4-barrel carburetor version.[31] Hydraulic valve lifters were used in the standard and optional 300 hp (220 kW) engines, solid lifters in the optional carbureted 340 hp (250 kW) and fuel-injected 360 hp (270 kW) versions. Dual 4-barrel carburetor engines were no longer available.
1962 saw the last solid-rear-axle suspension, that had been used from the beginning. Rocker panel trim was seen for the first time, exposed headlights for the last, until 2005.[23] This was the last Corvette model to offer an optional power convertible top mechanism. Rare options: RPO 488 24-gallon fuel tank (65), RPO 687 heavy-duty brakes and steering (246), RPO 473 power convertible top (350), RPO 276 15"×5.5" wheels (561).
Harley Earl, as head of GM's Styling Section, was an avid fan of sporting cars. He recognized that GIs returning after serving overseas in the years following World War II were bringing home MGs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos.[4] In 1951, Nash Motors began selling an expensive two-seat sports car, the Nash-Healey, that was made in partnership with the Italian designer Pininfarina and British auto engineer Donald Healey,[5] but there were few moderate-priced models.

My first ride in a Corvette was in a '62, back in '76.
My 2nd cousin was restoring one, I helped him out a few times.
When it was done I drove over with my girlfriend to see it. He said climb in, so with her sitting on my lap we took off. Man things were simple back then.

My daughter asked me something interesting the other day. She asked me if it was okay if she wasn't good at her hobby, as long as she was enjoying it. I told her Of course it is, it's a hobby. That's what a hobby is for.

You're correct, a hobby is supposed to be about FUN, not stress.

Tell her that I personally couldn't have a hobby if I had to be good at it. But I keep on doing the things I enjoy 😉.

    Great build video.
Regarding the side coves: the 1962 Corvette did not offer chrome outline trim around the coves and the body was one color. I didn’t see Leno’s movie, but if his ‘62 has cove trim it is an aftermarket addition.

    @garryrenfro2326 2 роки тому +4

Leo's Corvette in the movie is a 1960. The last year the coves featured a chrome trim surround with or without contrasting color was 1961.

Nice job on your 62 Vette Chris. I'm going to throw a suggestion at you. Why don't you talk with Jack at model round up & see if he can arrange for you to attend the ACME show in November this year. Model round up always has a vendor table set up at the show. A lot of you tube model builders attend this show & I'm sure they all would enjoy meeting you. I sure would like to shake your hand & say hello & thanks for your contributions to our hobby.

Oh... I forgot-- a simple hack is to put a bread tab on the end of the tape, it takes some getting used to, but in the end it's one less thing to worry about

I thought I remembered building this but I wasn't sure until I saw the chassis with the exhaust and rear dif molded in. Then I was sure. I was always disappointed when I bought a kit like that. Their 63 corvette was the same. Ironically the 53 corvette kit had a frame separate from the bottom and was very detailed

The only thing I never liked on the 1962 Corvette by AMT: the headlights. They look way to small. Compare it to the 1960 Corvertte by AMT. They look perfect and I don't know, who messed this up when the mold was built. So my way to build one is to cut of the front end and replace it with a propper one from an "older" C1.
Take a look to Revells 1962 Corvette: it looks perfect at the front.

Have you ever done a walk around to show all of the models that you have built? I would love to see them all displayed. But as many as you have built your wife may not go for a model display of that size. Thanks again.

Your build looks good anyway. But a quick look on IMDB tells you Lenin’s car was a ‘60 in that movie. Which explains the chrome side trim. The car also had a ‘58 hood. So maybe it was pieces together.

Chris, at least 50 percent of a car model is the final finish, and you've hit this Vette out of the park. It's absolutely gorgeous! The detail is lovely but the overall effect is just stunning.

I am curious about the paint. As a base coat for the body, you indicated that you used flat black (and not black primer). What is the advantage or benefit
to using flat paint for a base rather than a regular primer ? I have been using rattle cans for a long time and this is something different for me.

Great build, and great review of the kit. The tips on building the kit are much appreciated. You really need to consider getting some shop cards printed up for your many followers. Also, you really need to re-consider setting up a Spring store (you had previously mentioned the tax issues with this, but I really think it is time for you to do this) and selling t-shirts, hoodies, coffee cups, and stickers. A viewer has done graphics for you, so you are pretty much ready to go with it. If you do this, be sure to have 3xl, and 4xl shirts. I would love to have a couple of t-shirts and a sticker for my model toolboxes. Please consider this. As usual, thanks for sharing.

Excellent paint job, I love the shine you get with the Pledge.
Were those 4 lowering blocks all the same, or could they be switched front to rear to fix the ride height?
If they are the same, I'd worry that using the other hole would make front too low.
In that case, maybe using a grinder to remove a bit of the block would fix it, and still use lower hole?

I use black primer since it's made to have paints sprayed over it.
Some matte blacks will work, some will resist paint over them, you'll have to test.

Despite my continual suggestions offered up during every build AND that you always ignore - you've turned out yet another finished model far better than anything I could have. Let's face it, as long as you keep ignoring my suggestions, your builds will continue being the superior "art" that we've come to expect. So you're welcome. (huh?). BTW - Nice Vette. I love your take on Leno's ride - it's a beauty.
