The 1957 Chevrolet is a car that was introduced by Chevrolet in September 1956 for the 1957 model year. It was available in three series models: the upscale Bel Air, the mid-range Two-Ten, and the One-Fifty. A two-door station wagon, the Nomad, was produced as a Bel Air model. An upscale trim option called the Delray was available for Two-Ten 2-door sedans. It is a popular and sought after classic car. These vehicles are often restored to their original condition and sometimes modified. The car's image has been frequently used in toys, graphics, music, movies, and television. The '57 Chevy, as it is often known, is an auto icon.
The 1955 model year Chevrolet introduced its now-famous small-block V-8 - the first V-8 available in a Chevrolet since 1918.[5] It has a displacement of 265 cu in (4,340 cc). Prior to 1955, Chevrolet offered a 235 cu in (3,850 cc) displacement in-line 6-cylinder engine only. The 1955 model, like its engine, was all new. The "shoebox" design, so named because it was the first Chevrolet to feature streamlined rear fenders, was a watershed for Chevrolet. The lightweight car, coupled with a powerful overhead valve V-8, became a showroom draw, but also thrust the company into the arena of competitive motorsports. 1955 Chevrolets went on to dominate drag racing and became a formidable force in circle track racing. In 1956, the design was lengthened somewhat in front and given a more squarish treatment; under the hood, engine power increased and a Chevrolet Corvette engine was available for the first time in a full-size passenger car. In 1957, the V-shaped trim on the tail fins was filled with a ribbed aluminum insert exclusive to the Bel Air's upgraded trim level. The fuel-injected engine represented the first time that an internal combustion gasoline engine in a passenger car reached an advertised one horsepower for each cubic inch benchmark, although the Chrysler 300B beat that by a year in its 355-horsepower, 354 c.i.d dual-carburetored engine, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint was introduced a year earlier than that (1954), with a 79 cubic inch (1290cc) engine that produced 80 hp. In NASCAR racing the 283 with its increased horsepower gave the '57 a dramatic advantage over the smaller 265 V8 the '55 and '56 had. NASCAR held the competition, especially the '55-'57 Chevrolet to a cubic inch restriction because of all the races the '57s were winning. This restriction stayed with the '55-'57 until they were grandfathered out of the lower NASCAR divisions in the 1970s as the '57 was still beating virtually all in their class.
Body choices for 1957 included:
2- and 4-door sedans (identified by the "Pillars" between door windows)
2-door "Sport Coupe" (a two-door hardtop - the car has no pillar between the front and back window when the window lowered)
"Sport Sedan" (a 4-door hardtop)
2-door Utility Sedan, a two-door sedan with a package shelf instead of a rear seat
Delray "Club Coupe", which was a Two-Ten model 2-door sedan with a deluxe interior
The top-of-the-line 2-door Bel Air Nomad station wagon with a sloped pillar behind the hardtop door and sliding windows at the rear seat, unique ribbed roof sheetmetal and lower roofline height mimickng the hardtop models. - Авто та транспорт
The results speak for themselves, the color is perfect and no detail was left out! Perfect!
Whenever I've built this kit when it was Revell issued, I always glued in the hinges first with the doors on. Then I'd glue in the inner fenders which allows to do adjustments. Sometimes I'd have to file down a little of the inners fenders at areas and they'd drop in like butter. Same with the trunk and hood hinges, I'd glue those in first then primer and paint after. Never had an issue that way with the firewall or other fitments. Always built up as a great kit.
sometimes, reading the instructions helps :)
And tape them in place when painting. I have two going and I know Chris didn't have the time to, but I filled in the ends of doors, trunk, and hood to eliminate the gaps. I do want to garner some of his "git 'er done" pace though!
Great video. Couple of points: this kit is not from 1973; it was first released in 1962, making this a sixty year old mold. Atlantis appears to have cleaned up the molds as best they could. The problems you ran into at the end of the build are known to old timers like myself. I'm surprised that of all the old molds that Atlantis got a hold of, they brought this one back.
I seem to remember the chrome side trim being on this kit or maybe the 55 or 56 versions. Help me out here.
@@joelcheek3494 Revell's '55 and '56 ( but never the '57) did indeed have delicately molded separate side chrome, designed to add realism and infuriate ten year old boys.
You're right on everything. Though I don't see much for clean up on this kit. I'm looking at the first addition in front of me right now and there is a huge difference between then and this Atlantis issue.
look more Revell reissue to me
I remember building the Hot Rod issue in the ‘80’s
I concur. An old Revell kit reissue. The deeper into the build the more familiar it looks. Had this when it was molded in hot pink had decals that said Strawberry Fields. Being a big Beatles fan at that time I had to go with that option.
I am impressed! For an old kit this goes together very nicely and is highly detailed.
Lots of little details on this one -looks great, and love the color you chose.
Built several back in sixties. Back then where I lived we had Testors. Stirring the paint big time and big size brush you could get paint job without brush marks. My mother did the chrome trim. figures painter so she had the touch. Cherry red and black. I them in dreams over the years. Great memories.
Great build as always! Love watching your videos as soon as they come with my 10 yr old son ,he is starting to get into modeling himself which makes me very happy. I appreciate your choice of music as well, the song you played when painting the chrome strips on side of the car always reminds me of our summer trips to Tennessee, so peaceful and laid back .
On a 57 Chevy, if the radiator sits in front of the rad support, it was originally a 6 cylinder car (the V8 didn't have the length so the rad goes behind the support). The panels behind the grill are semi gloss black along with the inner fenders, but the floor pans are red oxide if you aren't going full custom in color appearance. The firewall remains body color and the engine was Chevy Red not orange as the muscle car era--but the standard engine was the 265 cid V8 in chartreuse (no oil filter) with a manual transmission. This is all if you want the car to look "Day Two", stock but with add-ons in the late 1950's/early 1960's.
Glad you gave an honest review, because other than the opening doors, there's a lot of 1957 Chevy models to choose from.
Nice job as usual, cool color!
Build her till the doors fall off ! Other than Janky door hinge and fitment and window glass fitment overall nice kit ! - Thanks a mint for another great kit review and buildatorial !!! Make Model Car Building Great Again !!!
Great build Chris, thanks for sharing.
Last time I built this kit was back in the mid 90’s, I think it was the Hot Rod issue that Revell was doing back then. Mine ended up being a gasser style street freak .
Thanks again for what you do, keep the videos coming.
Looks good and thanks for the honesty.
as always another amazing build. 👍🏾👍🏾
IMO this kit is almost as iconic as the actual car Nice build very happy that they have reissued it
About to start this kit. Thanks for the tips!
I think that if you apply pledge to the windows first; the superglue fumes will not affect the clear plastic.
Johnsons discontinued Pledge/Future some months back
Great review and build....I appreciate your honesty in your reviews.
That's an old Revell model I built in the 70 s nice kit well detail nice work
Actually, this kit dates back to 1962! So yes, it is a bit long on the tooth.
Great build chris
Great details as usual
Cool little build! I haven't built/owned a model in decades. However this month I've managed to acquire 60 kits or so. One of which is a 57 from revell 1963 with opening doors and working quarter windows.
These are the old Revell tri 5 molds. The grille, headlight bezzels rear fins and chrome from fins to tail lights are distorted. Very detailed kits for sure. I still have mine from 1967 and the Nomad. when i bought and built the kit. Pink met with a white roof. The Nomad in Copper met. The 55 is the best kit of the 4 but the front fenders lack the welt on the side. The new 2 pice body kits are fantastic.
Very cool👍
So I used the Pledge floor polish procedure for the first time.. . After about 6 hrs awaiting to apply coat number 2, I find cracks in all the surfaces.. What gives?
I love it can't wait till it's done? Like to find one? Great job on the review!! Thanks for sharing . Nice part's in this kit!!
Sweet build Chris! Despite those issues, she came out looking awesome!
Chris you got to put the hinges on first ok
When I work on my car, I have to clean up a bit of the chrome pieces on the back so that the glue can apply properly. I call this process shaving the chrome, because when I do that, it’s like I’m shaving it.
Nice video and build up!!
Wish Atlantis would reissue the 57 Chevy Nomad. I believe it's based on the same chassis. I built the Hot Rod Magazine version in the 1990's It was molded in yellow ☹️ However, I airbrushed it with Boyds Pearl Yellow and clear coat. I brought home 6 trophies from a model car show within a car show.
I still have the model, however it shows it age.
Now this is the real ... Build Back Better !!!
👍👍
This Atlantis issue is in much better mold condition than Revell's last release as the Ed Roth shop car, but this kit originally debuted in 1962 not 73. I've built this kit a few times, first time I was still early teens, I had no trouble with the door and hood hinges. Possibly because I installed 'em before the dash and firewall and Fender wells- actually since I was building a gasser version I may have left the Fender wells off for header clearance- maybe that's why the hinges fit. I don't know if Atlantis changes Revells instructions, but each time I built the '57, I installed the hinges first so I could paint the body with all parts attached if I remember correctly....nice build regardless
Built one of these ln 64 and it was originally a rebuild kit they eventually came out with the 55 Chevy
That's a revell kit did many of that kit love that kit
This is a great old kit, wish they'd reissue the 55 Chevy, makes a great gasser
BSI makes a super glue that does not fog clear
Hey, I really enjoy your builds, and seeing as soon I plan to get this kit, really helpful, I notice that you often have music playing while doing the build, with this 57 Build it would have been cool if you had old 50s rock and Roll playin.
I'd love to, but licensed music costs tens of thousands of dollars, per video that you use it in.
So I use non-licensed music provided by YT at no charge.
Looks like the old Revell H-1284-198 Which I built in 1969 (to match my Real 57). I still have all Factory Sealed Revell H-7383, H-1390 & H-1392. PS NO Taillight below bumper only the top Eye-Brow. 👌😍👍
Love your work. I’m inspired to build again. Would like to know where you get the base to hold the body for painting.
Here's an interesting question, wonder if I could put LEDs in headlights, also, in regard to door and hood hinges, what if use a cut piece of small.diameter either straw or Evergreen Styrene tubing, might fit better
Yes, people add lights to models all the time.
LOL !!! I take it you never built the fine model as a kid!!!!
The hood hing has to be installed first. Then the windshield, and finally dash.
But that's the way of it.
Great build! Beautiful car!!
I wonder if they have the ‘57 Nomad waiting in the wings. I keep hearing about how terrible the accuracy was, but I’d enjoyed the pile of detail when I built it, way back when.
Looks awesome!! I am new to the hobby and love 50's cars and was wondering if you knew of a 1/25 scale 1957 Oldsmobile 88 kit. Love the look of that car. I know they die-cast ones but would love a kit ro build myself.
i think it's better if you can to have a slight turn on the wheels, like the car is about to pull out.
Nice job car looks clean. Can you tell me the name of glue you use seems to work great I use Tamia thin get good results but sometimes it dries too fast I've also tried the Tamia citrus glue that takes a little longer to dry. Thank you for all your tips.
Plastruct Bondene is my personal favorite. Model Roundup sells it.
@@hpiguy thanks for the information.
Question, the pen you used on door handle ,kasier I think that's how it's spelled where get it from if you don't mind me asking , please thank you
What's the glue you brush on?
Plastruct Bondene is my preferred plastic glue. But all the modern brush on liquid glues work well.
What glue do you use?
Plastruct Bondene. Modelroundup.com carries it
Reminds me of the old revell 57 chevy lowrider " witches passion " kit from the 1970's.
Yes this is the Revell 57 Chevy
Another reissue of the HIGHLY INACCURATE Body Revell 57 Chevy. If you compare the body to the AMT 57 Chevy, the Revell looks like it was mastered by Ray Charles. Of the 55, 56, and 57 kits, the 55 Is the most accurate.
Great video Chris. Tim Boyd did a build off of all four of the 57 Chevs from MPC/Revell/AMT and Monogram in the early 80's in Scale Auto mag. This Revell kit finished 2nd behind the AMT kit when finished in terms of accuracy, but he did criticize the kit for difficulty of build. He said many of these kits were started by young builders back in the day (early 60's as pointed out by others), but not finished due to the complexity of finishing the kit. Definitely not a first build for a new modeler.....
Atlantis?
Thats revell
I built the old revell kit justlike this
As stated, Atlantis bought warehouses full of old Revell molds. Thanks.
@@hpiguy good to know
I miss these old kits
The 57 looks cool as stock, My Grandparents had a 57 210 2Dr. Sedan. BUT
. the 57 Chevy as a Gasser oh yes it is BAD. Back in the day they rule the drags. Great job as always. Love your videos.👍👍👍👍👍
Chris, great job toughing it out though the build. Those old Revell kits had a billion parts and were quite fiddley. Imagine trying this build at 10 years old. They do come out as acceptable replicas when completed. Thanks for the review!
Just a tip - on some of the candy color hot rods and customs I paint, I do the engine block the same color as the exterior of the vehicle. What a POP!!
Your site used to have tons of old videos on it, but today when I went to check, they're all gone.
It was so very handy to check out model kits before I buy them.
_Super disappointed._
All 700+ videos are on the channel home page.
ua-cam.com/users/hpiguy
What an awsome build. It not that often you have a 1/25th scale with opening doors and trunk. I remeber my brother had 57 chev ...took out the stock engine and replaced it with a complete custom engine.
It's the 65yeat old revell kit
This must be the old Ed Roth 57 Chev kit with the striped roof which I knew had a lot of issues, thanks for pointing them out.
Old revell "re pop"? I thought they only made the Nomad.
Yes it is the Revell kit
They also made a 55 and a 56 version.
@@joelcheek3494 yeah I know I have those originally sitting here I have one of each including the nomad original issues
I remember that. I had one around '76 or '77. It also had opening doors, tailgate and back window.
Pledge still has Revive It on their website.
Good to know!
It's a reissue, of the revell kit all same stuff.
It's reissue of the revelled kit all same stuff
I personally thought this was an awful, ill-fitting kit when it first hit the shelves years-ago. And do we REALLY need another Tri-Five Chevy kit? I think Atlantis dropped the ball in releasing this kit.....
This is how it all started back in the 60s. Models first then progress to the real deal. Now doing my final rendition of a Blown 57 Chevy 60s gasser in full size.
I must admit that spending $7.95 for a model back then was all the money in the world but sure was a lot cheaper to build.
When I started the kits were around $1.48. By the 80's they were up to around 7 and 8 dollars. Now it's ridiculous what they charge and they're made in China.
Love the colors!!
Chris, those are are ducts for the passenger cabin. The headlight bezels have air screen on them.
I don't blame Atlantis for bringing back this classic, as there are some who will want to experience the, uhh... experience... of building this kit again. Honestly there are so many other options available for building a '57 Chevy that this offering should be reserved for builders who are keenly interested in scratching a masochistic itch!
crazy glue is not the best glue to use on plastic
Great build! I can't wait to get mine! I hope Atlantis has the molds to do the 55 Chevy and the 57 Nomad
I like to see the nomad to I built one in the 70s great model
There was a car in my town last night and it looked exactly like this. same color and body looks.
Thanks for the video Chris, this kit was on my wanted list for the gasser version. I didn't realize it was an old Revell tool, but after watching your review and seeing the opening doors, hood and trunk it makes sense. Looks a bit finicky but I think it will be a fun build.
With the issues it’s still looks cool you did your best again with what you have to work with, thanks for sharing 👍🇦🇺
I'm going to be nice and say nothing because I have nothing nice to say. SORRY
Cool build! My only nit pick is there should have been some real drag slicks and Cragars included
In the first few issues around 1963, it had slicks and craigers.
I always loved this kit! I remember finding this kit in my brothers apartment it was the pink low rider issue! Years later I bout the hot rod issue of it and it was a challenge especially trimming all that flash, but it taught me patience , stick with it and it turned out ok. I bought it again this time it had the corvette wheels! It turned out better ! Next up the Ed Roth issue it was going real good built it up as a gasser, but I had to move and during that move the body got crushed 😢so now we’re on this one and I’m gonna repeat what I did with the gasser! This kit is a definite skill builder and it’s one I don’t mind buying over and over!
Glad to see this my local hobby shop just got this kit in
Per Scalemates this kit is actually a new tool in 1962. Parts we’re added in 1973.
Is Atlantis Models part of Revell or did Atlantis purchase the molds from Revell?
Atlantis bought a massive amount of Revell's old tooling when Revell's parent company Hobbico went bankrupt a few years ago.
@@hpiguy Thank you brother for answering my question. Hopefully they also purchased the '55 with opening doors and trunk, would love to see that one released again.
This kit, in its 1977 reissue, was the very first model kit I ever “built”. And yes it was a mess.
But in 2011, I took it upon myself to build it again, as carefully as I could.
For starters, I began with the fit and function of the doors, hood, and trunk. They all work as advertised, after some gentle, pre-paint persuasion.
I also used my parts box for a few parts I wasn’t happy with(wheels, tires, and engine)
It looks good, and is buildable. But man was it a PITA !
I’ll see if I can post pictures of mine on the FB page.
Thanks again for a good, honest review, Chris
Great preview and build up!! A+
Wasn't this kit used for the foundation for the 57 2-door Nomad??
@@johnclemans7802 Shares many parts.
You're a true pro making a kit look good despite the Manufacturers errors!
I had the same issues with a 1/16 scale kit. The hinges would not stay in no matter what I did. I had to use stickem putty and smash the doors closed. Made the door opening thing kinda pointless!
This appears to be a reissue of the old revell kit with the solid front gasser front suspension possibly coming from the street demon series revell did in the 80's. It's a challenge to build but I am glad Atlantis brought this back.
Hi Chris, do you have any idea where i can get a decal sheet for this model. I bought this kit online from a seller and it has everything but the decal sheet. Any help is appreciated. I love your videos!
I would contact that dealer or Atlantis for a replacement sheet. I'm not sure if they can or will but that would be your best bet.
I m almost 71 y. o. and I still enjoy building
Thanks for the review! I saw this kit at the LHS the other, day glad I passed on it.
looks good buddy regardless of the hinges, good deal!
hi chris the doors are the first thing to go in the inter finder is put in around the door hinges. if you look it up this kit was first came out as revel. just a need to know lol.
1957 Chevy - just like I remembered. Thanks, Chris - very nice build.
I'm seeing a pattern here. When you build Chevy led sleds you break out the gloss purple. Great job on a challenging build.
Yeah, I've done a few of the Tri-fives in purple now, thinking of sticking with that theme. :)
Looks awesome!!
More kits should come this way - all panels open/hinged. Plus the crank detail if you wanted to go diorama. Odd they made the trunk hinge so narrow, but whatever. Despite it's flaws I think I'll pick one up.
I had the same problem with the front suspension just a little while ago
Awesome kit . Lots of parts .
You are a great builder .
WOW.
BEST . 👍👍😎😎
Mike Espo.
The tubes under the hood ar for fresh air for the heater cuz the heater vents are in the headlights
Hey Chris, that model was originally issued in a three pack. It was offered by Revell under HOT ROD. IT was the 1954 Bel Aire, 1955 and the 1957. I recognized it by the chrome tree. I have to look for this one at my local hobby shop. I really enjoy watching your videos. I am a huge Mopar fan. Would like to a few videos doing mopars.
Chris, you did a marvelous job building this old tool! Truly a silk purse out of a pigs ear!! Presentation is spot on as always!!
Will only ONE bottle of plastic-cement last for one nodel ,,, ???!
A jar of brush on cement lasts me at least a dozen kits.
Very good video. I was really hoping everything would open and close well, but this model is just like every model I have built with opening doors. Anymore, I don’t even try, and just glue them shut. Your color combination is just wonderful. Love the decals, just wish they had decals for the dash. Thanks for sharing.
