MatthewP64 I'd rather see an atheist debating with a preacher named gene Scott. that was one of the most knowledgeable humans when it came to theology. he was a beast when it comes to theology
Most prominent atheists/scientists don't debate theologians with great relish, since refutations of all theistic theological claims can easily be found in existing debates on YT. It just gives them the oxygen of credibility to be on the same stage as, for example, Dawkins. All theology is pretty much based on text. That is the first problem. All text is written by humans. And often by humans merely transcribing what other humans wrote years after the alleged events being described. What would have given the Koran or the Bible or the Torah some supernatural cred would have been if it has said something like "I say unto you, pestilence comes not from evil spirits or sin but creatures too small for man to see & numbering more than the desert sands." (Dawk) or some profound mathematics that no human could have known then.

Well let's see Gervais write a book and see how he compares to the intellect and popularity of Tolkien. Tolkien was writing a mythology, not a statement of fact. I grew up Catholic but we aren't practing now. Last year I explained the religious meaning behind Easter to my then 6 year old and when I was finished telling the story she replied, "I thought you said magic wasn't real," and I've never laughed harder or been more proud. 😂
I need a full commentary version of the LotR saga by Stephen
Shadowdrs somebody should pay him to make an audiobook version
Shadowdrs i think he will say to pause in between and give lecture about why hobbit have dirty toenails
Eh, he mispronounces everything, unfortunately.
Rawin Hilario Yeah, isn't that weird?
That isn't weird. In fact, being a brazilian, I totally understand it. Why? Because when I read something that I never heard, I figure it out on my own. And, since many words are made-up, you tend to get it wrong. Menzoberranzan, for exemple. How are you supposed to pronounce that? I only know because o Drizzt's audiobook
Please, please, put these two together again! Rick is so dry, and full of it. Well Steve is so slick, and crafty! It just the best banter ever!!!?
vmwindustries ever since the Colbert report, I have LOVED watching Stephen interview Ricky cause they always say the SILLIEST things.
creshiell They are hilarious! The undertones are the best!
They should have a podcast together...it would blow up
Not full of this
Stephen comes over as jealous of Ricky rightly so.
"Miss Universe always comes from Earth"

he said Mr but either pageant it's the same, all from Earth. What a joke. Nobody is looking around for talent from other places.

That pun was ripe and no one picked it.

Low-hanging fruit and they knew it.
Was literally just thinking that. The ball was up in the air, and nobody's balls dropped enough to take it.
@elgur your statement "it looks like you're the only one that believes that" and the 100+ upvotes on my comment don't reconcile with each other.
You have the option of improving your command of English before you reply.
The smirk Ricky gets at 8:50 epitomizes one of his best moves. The, "I've said something offensive but I also know you can't get mad cause it's true"
Oh, believe me, there are people out there who can get absolutely furious when you've said something true...
Take *any* really religious person, for example lol...
Autumn Phillips Well, except Stephen.
Ben Spitters I feel like I've watched this before.
Autumn Phillips
Or any atheist person who gets upset when someone tells them something true, like you couldn't possibly know there is no God. (For instance) lol.
Peter The Rabbit, always thought that was a bit of a cop-out. I mean, sure, you showed that atheist fella, but you've also reduced your belief system to his level of sheer possibility, where he's got nothing to lose. Pretty much the equivalent of titling the book "Holy Bible (maybe)."
Colbert should have Karl Pilkington on the show.
yeah!
Really wish Karl, Rricky and Stephen would get back together for an XFM special or something. I'm dying to know what Karl thinks of Trump xD
MatthewP64 I'd rather see an atheist debating with a preacher named gene Scott. that was one of the most knowledgeable humans when it came to theology. he was a beast when it comes to theology
i miss Karl so much!
What would have given the Koran or the Bible or the Torah some supernatural cred would have been if it has said something like
"I say unto you, pestilence comes not from evil spirits or sin but creatures too small for man to see & numbering more than the desert sands." (Dawk) or some profound mathematics that no human could have known then.
not many ppl can interview Gervais and it not turn into an actual pissing contest, the fact Colbert could have a half way decent convo demonstrates his interviewing ability
tbrogoit02 and then you watch his interview with Bill Burr and all that goes out the window
Letterman, Conan, Ferguson, Norton... the real smart and sarcastic ones.
Haha John Oliver and dubstep? No wonder you're instantly tribalistic and throw Trump around without anyone even mentioning him. You're a quintessential normie.
Assdafflabaff amazing. Every word you’ve just typed was wrong. Keep on shining you crazy diamond.
I'll keep shining those blood diamonds that I use African child soldiers to secure, Trump and Hitler are coming over tonight for dinner I'll let them know how owned I got by Kasper Hawser, I know Trump has mentioned you a few times before!
I love Ricky s face when he breaks out in a smile. And he's so funny.
Ricky Gervais is a great guest on all talk shows but its so fun to watch on Stephen Colbert. Two smart witty individuals discuss hot topics in respectable and funny way
I absolutely agree.
@Andy Lloyd he doesn't think he is; but i do
Gervais has said for every chat show appearance attempts to make it the best appearance in its history. Not that he achieves that, but at least he is aiming to give audiences their value for money.
"Same as Mr Universe, always comes from Earth..."
Being from the UK, i have been a fan of Ricky Gervais for a few years now and have seen him live 3 times. I have only recently started to watch Stephen Colbert and find him to be
very funny and entertaining. Not often British and American humour mix so well.
As are you, you unsophisticated pleb.
Just cos you're offended doesn't mean you're right. - Ricky Gervais
And just because he offends people doesn't mean Gervais is right either - Me.
i just love how smart and open colbert is, inviting a person with completely opposite ideas in his show, respecting him and having fun!
amazing
Next he should have trump on since hes so open
@@lalisitabonita He already has had him on.
Ricky is so quick witted, its amazing
Love these two together. Talking religion doesn't necessarily have to be a bloodbath.
More than comedians, these are truly intelligent and fast thinking men!
I love how they get along so well whilst disagreeing on everything from elves to Jesus.
I was looking forward to an 11 minute discussion about Lord of the Rings...
Bummer ! :/
What is wrong with your ancestors?
gbbhhfc jjnffs I suppose you think that's terribly clever
Give him as break, he just learned a new word.
well they did talk about a fantasy story
Yeah .. me too .. the title is a little misleading :/ instead of eleven minutes we got eleven seconds
I just realized that Ricky has such a David Bowie smile.

Raggi86 way to ruin your joke you jag
No doubt the Americans bought it.
Americans are so gullible, better tell you the truth now or you might start a religion out of it.
But you leave in pieces. At least we are civil. Now. After all the rapin' the vikings did.
Yeah ok bud
Skip to 8:03 - 9:28 for LotR discussion 😂
Love this tho, if they had a podcast I'd immediately subscribe
Everytime these two are together, it's always going to be an interesting conversation😏😂
Peder Hansen you must live under a rock
Thank you Ricky for pointing out the we in Europe, well most of us, speak English and pretty good though too :)
When I meet Americans as tourists they act always so surprised that we speak English
"Sounds a bit far fetched to me". Sips coffee.
Yep, that's a pretty fair summary.
Farfetched is one word
@@Richard_Nickerson Why are you spell checking people on comments literally years old?
@@BasementBubbatunde
When the comments were made has nothing to do with when I saw them for the first time.
Why are you asking me this on comments that are years old? You're not OP, so why does it matter to you?
Are you only seeing this 2 year old comment for the first time? And you're judging me for responding to it? A bit hypocritical, don't you think?
@@Richard_Nickerson Because I'm asking you that's why, what do you get out of spell checking an account that may not even be active anymore on a comedy video?
Also, extremely flawed logic you have there. I didn't respond to the OP. I responded to you, a comment less then a day old asking a valid question given how meaningless the outcome is whether the OP sees it or not. Brilliant false equivalency.

I enjoy it. Obviously. What do I need to get out of it to justify it to some nosy stranger online?

"Why would I go live in a cave in Iraq" what a brilliant sense of humour
I absolutely adore Ricky Gervais, he’s not only hilariously funny, but he’s handsome too. Love you to pieces Ricky.
Handsome? You don't get out much, then, do you?
easily the best guest Colbert has ever had. the conversation flowed so fucking smoothly, I'm surprised they didn't talk longer. Ricky keeps Stephen on his toes and Colbert can go with it. this is how you entertain a crowd with two distinct personalities.
There's one person you can always count on finding Ricky Gervais amusing, and that is Ricky Gervais ;)
😂
As long as he's enriched one person, he's made a difference in the world.
@@brandonolsen2423 Well, going by that 'one person' prerequisite, I'd say he'll always succeed, then ;)
And me. He's brilliant and the UK OFFICE was 100 x better, because Gervais based it on his actual work experiences.
@@wessexmom As a 'Brit' (I prefer 'Englishman', buy Yanks can't seem to understand the distinction) I cannot understand what is supposed to be funny about 'The Office'. It's a bag of unfunny shit.

I want a LOTR audiobook by Ricky
that would be interesting.
I bet he'd do it .. just give him a reason and some others to work with him.
I love this. I live for Stephen just explaining Christianity to Ricky and then the whole LOTR debacle.
"you could be a hobbit" 😂😂😂
I just want someone to ask him about Seona Dancing-which I love
why would you just type out a line from the video, you mouthbreather?
How come you see people all over youtube just quoting one funny thing from the clip and receiving hundreds of likes?
I wish, when would say " okay am Catholic now" and Stephen Colbert would appear from nowhere, shake my hand, and say ''Welcome, welcome aboard."" with that face.
I love how well they play off each other
You don't just see Ricky Gervais laugh, you FEEL it.
Wow, really great comment and absolutely true.
Watching, giggling, never expecting the funniest line to come from Colbert. "You could be a Hobbit". 🤣😂🤣
I love Colbert's introspective and nuanced immersion in Catholicism.
Colbert doesn't believe much as a Catholic. He calls himself a Christian but he seems embarrassed to defend it.
Well that's sad
Forget Ricky Gervais, Stephen Colbert just said "Peace be with you"!
Catholics receive that from St. Francis, who used to greet people like that.
I love how these two people just respectfully disagreed about their beliefs and religion then bounced off to other topics. So pleasant.
Only if we could all handle our differences in that way...only if.
All that beeping in US shows is so strange. It´s just how people talk!
It's not like people don't know what they are saying... What's the point

Would love to see a Ricky and John Oliver interview/conversation. 😂
As a Catholic who loves Lord of the Rings I've had many friends who were Athiest and hated LoTR and omg the conversations we had on these topics were so fun. As long as you have respect and a sense of humor about everything anyone can talk about anything.
Ha ha, true. Also I am an atheist who loves Lord of the Rings and all things Tolkien.
Stop a super religious person in their tracks by asking them "is it possible that God has a wicked sense of humor?"
Finally a good standup. Ask Frankie Boyle about that. They build roads around fairy trees in ireland also. They moved a whole motorway.
Totally enjoyable. If only disagreeing could be this funny instead of all the anger and attacks on both sides of an issue.
Its cringe-y for me to watchi how nervous Colbert seems when he is interviewing Gervais! Ricky is soooo confident aaaall the time! Such an intellectual mind! Sharp and eloquent, that’s why he doesn’t lose in such debates like Colbert would put up about religion. Love Gervais!!! I hope his career goes a long way. Love all his work of art from Invention of Lying to The Office, his stand up specials and Afterlife! His Golden Globes 2020 monologue was brilliant! #RICKYGERVAIS
Seemed to me like Colbert was also blasting religion. Thing people always get wrong is the my god vs your god when in reality its the same god the different religions are just arguing about the details basically. Golden Globes 2020 was amazing
Who is subtitling this? Every time they say “Christ” in a discussion about religion the subtitles say “Kleist” 😂

M. S. Nah I would rather hear 11 minutes of lotr analyzing to be honest.
Why? Go watch Fox or CNN for religious debate crap. Stephen's show is meant to be entertaining.
"Why don't you like Tolkien?"
"Because Michael Moorcock's 'Elric' saga is more relevant to our day and age; and is less poncey as a read mi' lad,
That's why."
I wouldn't have minded a chinwag on Tokien and fantasy,
Maybe Tolkien vs Moorcock or Lovecraft LOL
That would have been fun. :-)
Seems reasonable.
I love Ricky Gervais... such a great human being ♥
I love how much of a good sport Stephen is lol
I love Stephen, I love Ricky, and somehow I end up respecting Stephen for his beliefs and Ricky for his intelligence and the points he makes.
I can love them both and not 100% agree with either of them.
LOL I totally agree with Ricky, there is no magic man in the sky watching us all and judging us.
I love that face Ricky makes when Stephen says hes a huge Tolkein fan.
🤦♂️
Well let's see Gervais write a book and see how he compares to the intellect and popularity of Tolkien. Tolkien was writing a mythology, not a statement of fact. Read the multi-layered intricacies of Tolkien, and you'll realize what a low grade pleb Gervais actually is. His only talent is to smugly take the piss out of everything, which, ironically, takes little talent.
"Sounds a bit far fetched to me." Fucking savage.
'Bed rock of western civilisation' line killed me hahaha
Nobody breaks up the flow better than Colbert .
he looks like David Beckham if he let himself go

I think this is THE BEST interview WHERE interviewer DISAGREES with interviewee - but they LAUGH ABOUT the differences - SKILL of Colbert and even Gervais. BRILLIANT of both of them
Brilliant interview, Gervais on fire!
They didn’t mention the bit Ricky did when Jon Stewart, Stephen, and Steve Carell stole Ricky’s Emmy
