Last night’s GG ceremony showed that having someone else trying to say things that Ricky might say isn’t the answer. Gervais just has that combination of razor sharp, precise wit and delivery and simply not caring about consequences. It’s very similar to Dave’s disposition early on in his career in many respects.
i think the trick to a good comedian and a good performer is that it has to be impossible to tell if he's joking or genuinly believes what he's saying and just pretending to be joking.

I watched and listed to every bit of Don Rickles as I was growing up and that was over 50 years ago. I know Don Rickles. This guy isn’t anything like Don Rickles. If he was he would have been making fun of Letterman like Rickles did with Johnny Carson. What Ricky said on the Golden Globes was absolute truth about that audience of self absorbed narcissists. He said what everyone already knows about these actors.
Ricky is a very funny man. I well remember, just after his second Golden Globes when Hollywood wanted to lynch him, Letterman - someone himself with a true nose for the funny - was one of the first to publicly stand behind him. I genuinely believe that they've been friends of sorts ever since. There certainly seems a natural affinity in that relationship.

Did you ever see the original Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? On the surface, it seemed stupid, but it was actually clever and intelligent, with lots of subtle gags hidden within. Perhaps that would also mesh with your sensibilities.
