I’ve been doing a lot of hauling in a 2017 tradesman dodge 2500 diesel, and I love the truck. It is the first diesel I’ve ever used, and for hauling long distances and often for work, what a great machine. The engine is loud when you’re accelerating and idle. But I love the sound for the most part. Good review.
Thank you for doing these reviews. I have a Ram 2500 Laramie with CTD 800 ft lbs and 68RFE. I would love to see a review compaing the Ram 2500 to the 3500 (single wheel base) with it comes to axel ratings, frame strength, towing, etc. I was origionally wanted the 3500 SWB when I bought mine. It was between payload and ride quality, ride quality won so I went to the 2500. I may end up overloading my 2500 1-2 times per year but I wasnt willing to ride in the 3500 the rest of the year. Again, really appreciate the reviews.
Great job explaining things in this video. My wife and I just purchased a 2016 Ram Laramie 3500 Diesel Dually. Wow talk about a stout truck!!! And we just purchased a toy hauler yesterday. Talk about stability when towing and the power under the hood. Hey I’m sure the detail guys love you test driving their truck through those puddles! You are job security for them!! 😜 Also that front suspension had more arms going every which way than an octopus in heat! All I could think about was all those arms equalling out to stability when towing. Thanks for another fabulous video! ✌🏽
Turned up in towing position the Ram mirrors are the best I've ever used. The magnification differences between the two types of glass are very well matched. That stupid void that Ford created on their mirror causes an unnecessary blind spot for night driving. In daylight you can see the mirror ends prior to the flat mirror but at night it is disturbing.
They've had the mirror set up like that forever. The reason why they're like that is because when you're just daily driving without towing anything the mirror should be down but when you're towing then the mirror should be flipped out obviously. I know everyone has their own opinion but those are my favorite style.
If it has an up-charge on the options side it probably has the 3.73. The dual rear wheel Rams offered it as an option, but last I checked single rear wheel only had the 3.42 with the diesel.
Big Truck Big RV I went from a 07 with no peddle lag, ton of power and such pick up it was faster then a lot of cars even with a trailer, to an 11 with so much the vehicle felt unsafe when merging or pulling into traffic from a stop sign and much less usable pulling power. I know the number say different but anyone that drove them could tell right away. The 15 is better but still a concern. If the 17 has little to no lag maybe time to sale the 11 and try a 17. Thank you for that information.
Supa Doopa If you compare the big 3 work trucks, they are all about the same price range ($51-54k) with the Chevy being the most expensive. This is before any discounts and what I have found is you can can $10-14k off all of these trucks.

you mentioned the running board not going back for bed access. Ram offers 2 running boards, one cab length, and the other is just beyond the cab length. You can get either one, on any configuration. I have also test drove 4 different ram 2500 & 3500s and they all ride and driver different, even different laramie trucks ride different; I can only assume its different front end preloading because of a snow plow prep package.

I have. drove fine, definitely felt less powerful (is it is severely derated). With the modern improvements in automatic transmissions, there really isn't any justification to buy a manual unless you just enjoy driving one.

Mac102004 Farms: agreed, the sound is great. I found that the 2016+ 3500 SRW also use springs in the rear now. Check out my previous RAM video where I show it on there.

The 3500 suspension was revamped in 2013, that's when they went to the radius arms like the Ford. I've never seen a 3500 with the optional rear air bags though, not sure why.
I know this is a super old video and all, but I can explain the confusing final drive ratio thing. The "default" configuration for the 2500 and 3500 is the gas engine, which comes with a 3.73. As soon as you put the Cummins diesel engine in it you get a 3.42 instead. The window sticker lists all the default features including the 3.73 rear end, and then later shows you the 3.42 as an added feature. Good way to figure out if a used dealer knows what they are talking about... If the ad says 3.73 and it's a Ram diesel, don't expect the salesman to know anything about the truck he is trying to sell you.
I cant believe the great prices on trucks in the USA. The dodge has a great power train..have you driven the 6.4 gas , I've heard they do great pulling an RV . From what iI hear they have a good low end torque in every gear and with cylinder deactivation the fuel economy is pretty good with daily driving.
Shackles it's going depend on what your standards are. I get around 13 in normal driving and I just pulled a 7500 pound travel trailer and averaged around 8.75 or so. It towed ok for gas truck but I pretty much ran in 4th gear the whole time.
I have one with a 4.10 rear end it does great I pull a 7k stock trailer a few times a year like it’s nothing and stops on a dime with that weight and the rest of the time it’s a daily driver as far as mpg I average about 12 around town and 18 highway and around 8 towing so I guess it decent on gas but by no means is it “good” I love the truck tho it’s been reliable and does everything I need it too
The Ram is the last to offer the 6-speed manual. That is a huge selling point to me. I love my '04 F-350 PSD manual, but was very disappointed that Ford went the way of GM and no longer offers a manual transmission. I understand why, but I will always prefer the manual. I was disappointed that Ram only offers the floor shift 4x4 in the Tradesman trim. You are absolutely right on your Ram review videos that they are the best bang for the buck currently. I'm about to pull the trigger and buy one. I've almost talked myself into it! Great reviews!

I don't think that Dodge used to make good trucks, but it appears that they're getting better and that price tag is pretty hard to argue with.

One thing that I am sure you noticed as well as others that watched your review was when you look under the hood of the Dodge is that the Cummins looks like it has a lot less going on under the hood and looks like it would be easier to work on than say the 6.7 Powerstroke and the 6.6 Duramax. Looking under the hood of a Ford or GM/Chev it looks like they used every inch of space they could for the engine and all the works in there. Now the 6.7 compared to the 6.4 is way different the 6.4 looks like and has the rep of being a PITA to work on, the 6.0 while no slouch was way easier to work on than the 6.4 was by a mile. The Duramax under the hood has changed but it like the 6.7 looks like a pain but seems okay to work with, but the cummins definitely looks easier to work on with room to spare, which I find surprising, but hey learn something new. Nice review. Most folks that use and have a need for Diesel while having brand loyalty, really develop a trust with the engine and their ability to pull and the torque that they require. All diesel engines have their faults but I will say this the refinement that the big three have put into their product and refinements in the engines to make them more reliable and more horsepower and torque are something you have to marvel at as they have become very impressive in their capabilities and reliability. Diesels have never been cheap to buy or own, but they are definitely becoming competitive btwn the big 3 on the various engines output and abilities to serve the needs of those who have and want the ability to pull heavy
why does dodge cheep out on 9.25 front axles with 33 spline shafts which is 3/4 ton in there 1 ton trucks? ford puts 9.75 35 spline D60s in there super duties.
Staci Moody how many times have you heard of one breaking? A front axle doesn't get used near enough to justify spinning a massive gearset all the time.
Jeff K I'm a Chevy guy born and bred, but I took a gamble on a new Ram 2500 tradesman almost 3 years ago. Couldn't beat the bang for the buck and have been pleasantly surprised overall. That being said, I still haven't quite gotten used to the mirrors. My Silverado, I could back up to a wall within an inch.. The Ram however, the mirrors still mess with the depth perception because of their design I think.
james dean I had a 97' ram sport and it was 230,000 kms before I changed a ball joint. it was a 2 wheel drive mind u but I can tell u those were not all highway kms
I actually tried driving with my mirrors flipped up empty and couldn't stand them. I use the convex mirrors for blind spots and love them. To me it is the best of both worlds.
Vinny Fiorella those aren't low profile one bit but you could always get tractor trailer size tires if that would be a worry for you but you would also need to lift it and get new wheels and tires

Even though I found the lower trim Ram interiors to be the worst of the big-3, $43,000 for a brand new 4x4 diesel dually is hard to beat. Good review.

I have a 2012 Ram 3500 and agree the tow mirrors are better out. I always leave them out.

I was disappointed that Ram only offers the floor shift 4x4 in the Tradesman trim. You are absolutely right on your Ram review videos that they are the best bang for the buck currently. I'm about to pull the trigger and buy one. I've almost talked myself into it! Great reviews!

I don't think that Dodge used to make good trucks, but it appears that they're getting better and that price tag is pretty hard to argue with.

One thing that I am sure you noticed as well as others that watched your review was when you look under the hood of the Dodge is that the Cummins looks like it has a lot less going on under the hood and looks like it would be easier to work on than say the 6.7 Powerstroke and the 6.6 Duramax.
Looking under the hood of a Ford or GM/Chev it looks like they used every inch of space they could for the engine and all the works in there. Now the 6.7 compared to the 6.4 is way different the 6.4 looks like and has the rep of being a PITA to work on, the 6.0 while no slouch was way easier to work on than the 6.4 was by a mile. The Duramax under the hood has changed but it like the 6.7 looks like a pain but seems okay to work with, but the cummins definitely looks easier to work on with room to spare, which I find surprising, but hey learn something new.
Nice review. Most folks that use and have a need for Diesel while having brand loyalty, really develop a trust with the engine and their ability to pull and the torque that they require. All diesel engines have their faults but I will say this the refinement that the big three have put into their product and refinements in the engines to make them more reliable and more horsepower and torque are something you have to marvel at as they have become very impressive in their capabilities and reliability. Diesels have never been cheap to buy or own, but they are definitely becoming competitive btwn the big 3 on the various engines output and abilities to serve the needs of those who have and want the ability to pull heavy
why does dodge cheep out on 9.25 front axles with 33 spline shafts which is 3/4 ton in there 1 ton trucks? ford puts 9.75 35 spline D60s in there super duties.
Staci Moody how many times have you heard of one breaking? A front axle doesn't get used near enough to justify spinning a massive gearset all the time.
I agree with you about those tow mirrors. When they are down it's tough to adjust to them, compared to when vertical.
Jeff K I'm a Chevy guy born and bred, but I took a gamble on a new Ram 2500 tradesman almost 3 years ago. Couldn't beat the bang for the buck and have been pleasantly surprised overall. That being said, I still haven't quite gotten used to the mirrors. My Silverado, I could back up to a wall within an inch.. The Ram however, the mirrors still mess with the depth perception because of their design I think.

james dean I had a 97' ram sport and it was 230,000 kms before I changed a ball joint. it was a 2 wheel drive mind u but I can tell u those were not all highway kms
I actually tried driving with my mirrors flipped up empty and couldn't stand them. I use the convex mirrors for blind spots and love them. To me it is the best of both worlds.

Get the Asin transmission.
Coming from a Ford 6,0 To my 16 Ram, the cabin is WAY quieter as far as engine noise.
