Great first review. I have a 2017 CB500X and have found it to be totally reliable, very frugal and fun to use for both touring and weekend rides. My wife enjoys riding pillion and as an all rounder I would recommend this bike to anyone wanting a solid machine where the scenery and simple biking pleasure is more important than absolute performance.....The 2022 upgrades look very worthwhile and that green colour rather tempting! Cheers.
@@michaeljohnson2922 I am above average height and I find the bike comfortable. I have done some distance rides and tours without any issues. If I did a lot of motorway miles with a pillion and luggage then I might feel the need for a bigger and more powerful machine......but every motorcycle is a compromise!
I have the 2020, it is the best bike I have owned,. It is so well balanced & is unbelievably comfortable & is as reliable as they come. I will buy another bike, when this one gets old, but I could never sell it, it would break my heart I am that attached to it.
Here’s some input from an old fart. This bike has similar performance numbers to our old super bikes. The BSA Lightning and the Triumph Bonneville. A tad heavier but suspension, brakes and comfort, unbelievable.
I had a 1967 BSA Lightning back in the late 1970s. Six more horsepower than the CB500X but the biggest upgrade with the modern bikes is in the handling and braking. That old Lightning was fast but her drum brakes didn't slow her down very well and her handling was not even close to today's machines. Much of that handling improvement may also be due to the much better tires we have now.
Merci d'avance 😎✌️
1:25 Both forks use same large main spring, Honda part number 51401-MKP-DQ1. Only the right fork has the damper piston rod 51426-MKP-DQ1 . The left fork has a larger rebound spring. 51512-MKP-DQ1
Damn, these upgrades make an already good bike even better. I have a 2021 and I really like it. The 2022 model however basically fixed the all the small points of criticism I have of mine. Upside-down forks, dual discs, and better low speed fueling. I'd happily pay another 100 for that! Also great review as always Dan
I was in the showroom when they had the last 2 models. So yours has 19" front wheel, nicer dash, led indicators, rear brake reservoir In a better place and the newer style bodywork. Looked way better than the previous one, I really liked the white one with green grafix But honda have done it again!
@@Daniel-dj7fh I think you only have preload on your fork. And only 140mm travel. As long as they move when you ride the bike and don't bottom out you're all good. If you had rebound damping that would make it more comfortable as it would not rebound as fast. If you had compression damping this would make the suspension harder as the forks would not compress as much. Hope that helps.
@@chrisredfield3240 All suspensions have rebound and compression dampening. It's just not adjustable on all bikes, including the cb500x. You're right, the older models could only adjust preload, whether in 5 or 7 steps has changed throughout the years.
For 2 up riding I think I'll stick to my KTM 1050 but for everyday commuting and even as a bit of a play thing I think this may just be ticking all the boxes. I love bikes that you can ride near thier limit on the road and not risk your licence.
Never bet against Big Red. Quality, balance, reliability, and the unassailable knowledge that the best engineering in the business was invested in the product. This is a real bike for the everyman.
I’ve watched this video a few times now. One of the most informative ones out there. Really looking forward to the in-depth review and what ever else is to come with this bike. I had a CBR500R a few years back and it was a cracking little bike. Had other bikes since then but all cost much more to buy, run and insure. I’m definitely going to get one of these next year. Can’t wait. Thanks for the vids Dan. Always look forward to them. Whatever you’re reviewing.
Hi Dan, I really enjoyed the review, sold my Yamaha fz1-n in august and I have now this exact one on order with delivery in March🤞🏻 organic Pearl green !! Mainly from this concise review, as I couldn’t test ride one, nor even see one in the dealership, as they haven’t had one for 15 months…….they had one in the service department for me to view, in for its 1st 600 mile service, and put in the order there and then……now the fun starts, sourcing new luggage, clothing and boots. And planning a Normandy trip. Ride safe
Yeah it's no power house but it's a very simple yet really fun bike to ride. Once you lower your expectations of the power, you can really start to enjoy it. And in the twisties it's plenty fast enough still. Enjoy the new machine and ride safe. :)
I have this odd habit of liking to follow roar tests on the map. Adds to an already enjoyable experience, especially when done as well as you have here. Well spoken knowledgeable chap, not at all condescending or irritating, doesn’t take himself too seriously, knows his bikes, respects Hondas. Thank you for sharing Peace
I certainly won't be part exing my 1200x in for one, but that sure is a beautiful bike, and it's great to see the big H investing in some different coloured paint and their choice of green is just superb and suits that bike well. Beautiful machine 👌🏻
Thanks for the review. This is number 1 contender for my next bike. I'm so glad I waited for the 22. The new fork and Xtra disc worth it,plus improved fuel mapping. Thanks Dan
Awesome upgrades by Honda. I have owned & loved a CB500X 2017 for 3.5 years, then i bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT. One of the 2 things i didn’t liked on my CB500X 2017 was the first gear that was way to short. It was annoying for me. How is the first gear on the 2022? Still to much short? The second thing i didn’t liked was to ride it over 100 km/h, the engine was “reving” to much high, but, it’s normal for a 471 cc engine. I would have love to have a CB650X. Anyway, now i really love my new bike, so far 17500 km of happiness. But, sometimes, i miss the great agility of a smaller bike, like was my CB500X.
It the gearing stayed the same as the 2019 Model it's still to short. Constantly hunting for the 7th gear on the Highway. However, changing the 15 tooth front sprocket for a 16 tooth (i got the one from a NC750X) mostly fixes this issue. It's still a bit short but now really usable. On the highway you're still at 5600 rpm at 120km/h and you definitively feel the vibrations in the handlebar and footpegs. It's not to bad tho, even swapped the standard pegs for ones without rubber insert and it's not bothering me.
My main complaint about the bike is the ergonomy, i'm just to big for it. (1.9m, 98kg fully geared up) my bum hurts after about 100km and my knees need a break every 200km. In about 8 Months i get my full A license so im already looking at the used market for a 1200 GSA
Top review mate! I've been excited for the 2022 CB500X and your review has made be even more! Even though im on route to get my A license im seriously considering getting on of these for its lightwieght adventure/touring potential. Will be great to see when you take it touring. Also I really appreciate that your views are coming from a non-bias POV and taking into account the the audience the bike is made for! I find a lot of UA-cam Bike reviewers to be reviewing bikes only from a place of 25+ years of experience on the track - which really doesnt give a realsitic view!
I'm serously considering trading my Honda Hornet 08 for this bike. I've done some test drives of the older models and didn't like them much but this years bike has been revised in pretty much all the problems i had with the older models. This bike is capable of doing everything i will ever need it to with a fuel comsuption of almost half of my Hornet. Also great price and that green paint scheme is a killer! Cheap to buy and to own is also a big plus. I really need to test drive this one!!
Thanks for posting. I’ve got my eyes on one of these for the spring. Just sold my beloved VFR800 (5th gen’) and feeling a bit glum! Anyway, rationality mean, at my advancing years, a lighter, more usable bike, and I believe this little Honda admirably fits the bill. I suspect the built won’t be so good as the VFR (what bike was/is?) but running costs, centre stand, light(ish) weight, ability to tour - what’s not to like? I guess the answer to that question is test ride……over to you Dan.
I am just trying to get back on 2 wheels after a poor bike selection a few years back, and the CB500X looks to be a perfect all rounder bike to tackle the mile of gravel I live on, and then cruise anywhere I want to go. I watched your 2019 review then straight into this, and I love that you give a solid comparison. Thank you! Subbed for the updates on this bike. Really hoping we get that glorious green here in The States. 🤞
Damn, I'm right on the bottom line ready to sign for one of these. I'm selling up and moving to Vietnam from Australia in about 18 months. I plan to build her up here in Australia with Givi panniers etc etc and travelling overland from Thailand to Vietnam. My Viet wife and I will base from there and do trips to China or wherever. I think it is a perfect size for Asia, perhaps a bit big for zipping around Ho Chi Min City but this bike is ticking all the boxes so far.
I personally prefer less powered bikes and riding them to their full potential rather than using less than half potential of a super bike...one really needs a lot of experience to utilize full capacity of high powered machines.
Great initial review for this bike. Now that Honda have put on the new forks and brakes, these little 500's are my #1 interest when I downsize from my Tracer 900 next summer. Looking forward to your future thoughts!
That tank protector pad looks useful, to protect against zip scratch. I’ve a F900XR TE at the moment but I’d be happy with one of these a couple of years down the line. Looks good in that colour.
@@chrisredfield3240 - well that’s the thing. That CBX, i had a 2019 which was comfy but the windshield got me down. The F900XR TE has a dynamic mode which transforms it. The quick shifter is great too. I just like the price of the CBX
Really nice, looking forward to see you having this Honda for a forthcoming months; it would be great to see you doing something about that display to improve the readability of info
Really looking forward to Honda announcing it coming to the US. Few things I would appreciate seeing in a video during your times with it: - How it is with a pillion passenger - Get some bags/cases on it and see how the added weight effects the ride - Get the opinion of someone a bit taller - 5’10” - 6’1” for how the ergonomics are for them Great video, looking forward to more, subscribed to see where this goes.
I honestly think this would have benefited from the bronze engine covers with that green but that’s a personal choice. I would likely spend the time fixing that with black bolts just to humor myself
I’ve had the 2022 bike for about 6 months and done just under 2000 kms, generally it’s a good little bike, for me personally it’s one major hang up is the wind buffering you get from the screen,it’s ridiculous and after a while becomes bloody annoying , I’ve tried every position possible with the standard screen and have since fitted a Puig touring screen with additional deflector which improves it a little but not significantly. This really sucks and could be a game changer for me, next move is to take the screen off completely.
I love the green colorway. My 2014 can do 300+ miles on a tank but it is on fumes. I love the CB500X and am interested to see if Rally Raid is going to offer wheels for the 22 model.
That showa sff-bp reminded me that it's the same as the one on the kawasaki zx25r. And thank you for the great review. Maybe a comparison between the CB500X and the Versys 650 or the V-strom or tracer 700 would be nice. Since they have the same character and have 2 cylinders engine.
Not to drastic of a change, brakes and suspension is fine on the 2021model, But for the sake of £100 extra that’s one heck of an upgrade. However, Damping one side and a spring the other, sounds a bit lob-sided to me. I would prefer both forks doing the same as each other.
I had a cb500f as my first bike, and then kept it a couple of years as a commuter before selling. I thought I had outgrown this platform, but Honda have systematically addressed every single shortcoming of my 2014… I’m actually thinking of getting one of these for a commuter/runabout. The only thing missing I guess is traction control … knowing Honda that’ll be on the 2024 model, but This isn’t the kind of bike I particularly need it on.
They are great bikes for sure and I'm even considering a 500X as a do it all workhorse. Yeah agree with you about TC, not needed but for newer riders it could be nice as a safety net. I'm sure in a year or two they'll add the HSTC.
Very thorough for a first ride review, Dan. I'd like to know how easy it is to adjust the screen & how effective the change is. Also the choices on fitting a fender extender & a rear hugger - the rear shock & undertray look very exposed to muck off the road.
I enjoy the cheeky looks to camera, gives one a reason to chuckle, please keep it up! Humour is much needed in these dark days! I’ve heavily modded my CB500X, they’re just dependable and cheap, great machines. Who knows if we will see a smaller Africa Twin to fill the gap between these, which the NC definitely doesn’t.
Great review, watched it a few times... And decided to buy a cb500x because you did a great full review about this one... So thank you 👌😎 Greetings from Steven Foets Belgium 🇧🇪
Nice review Dan, love the new looks of all the 500 range. I am going to get a 2022 CB500F as I was going to get the CB650R but insurance was a killer. But now the 500’s have sffbp forks and twin brakes, makes me want one even more. Hopefully you will get a chance on the other 500’s. Love to see that bike on the motorway 👍🏻
Centre stand standard? I had to get one fitted to my CB500F. All my riding is solo and I find it has all the power I need. The screen provides valuable wind protection. Also the mounting bracket for my GPS. I also fitted a Givi 56 litre top box. 471cc saves a lot on Rego being below 500cc. Very tempted to upgrade /update.
No that's an optional extra as I mention in the vid. I keep looking at the CB500F myself as a workhorse bike and something to do some trackdays on too.
@@Englishbikerdan I use mine mainly as a commute, shopping bike as there's a lot of places you can't get parking. Also day regional trips. I just got back into bikes about 2 years ago after along absence and having owned many large capacity bikes. Around town litre bikes are overkill and a waste of money.
I don't understand why they didn't keep that gold/bronze engine cover from the 500F and 500R. It matches this color scheme perfectly! Maybe if you wanted an all-black model or a silver & black model, but those should be the exception
a very nice green, advanced technology with double disc brakes at the front and upside down fork ... but I'll keep my 500X model 2021 ... I've waited 7 months for it ... just wait that long because of all the new things ... never
Nice review Dan, I've got the previous model booked for a week on a winter fly ride holiday. Never ridden one so hoping I've made the right decision. Looking at the range, the Honda will go 3 times as far as my MT10 on a tank of fuel!
Good to hear you will have the bike for 3months. It would be good to get your feedback on its commuting abilities as you have a lot of experience in this area. I.e. real world mpg (not what the dash says), performance on motorway to city traffic, including filtering (handlebars/mirror height). What’s it like to manoeuvre in and out of a garage. What’s the rear suspension performance like with luggage or two up riding (try any soft luggage bag with some reasonable weight), is there an option to adjust the preload on the rear? What’s the adjustable windscreen like for your height. What add on would you consider…heated grips etc.
Good review. Look forward to seeing others - as I plan to get one of these in the new year. Definitely sold on the green colour too. Smooth gear change by the look of it. I considered a new Africa Twin 1100, but too big, too heavy and too thirsty... I'll stick with the plan and go with the CB500X. I'll put on hand guards, centre stand, engine bars, Givi Trekker aluminium luggage and feel like I'll have a good all-rounder?
Got a 2015 with rallyraid level1 susp. It is really great. Could of considerd a 2022 if it had been delivered with cruisecontrol and android auto . But no.
"Kinda reminds me of Halo Master Chief color" Aaah it's nice to hear someone say out loud lol. It's all I can think about looking at this bike especially with the color of the fork looking just like his visor.
I'm not a speed demon and had a CX500 once and liked that, but now have a KLR. Would like a bike for mostly the Hwy with some dirt roads in the mix. What's it like for 182 cm riders and how does it handle extra long distance touring weight. Been looking at the Vstrom 650, but they're getting pricey. Thought about the Versys 650.

That tank protector pad looks useful, to protect against zip scratch. I’ve a F900XR TE at the moment but I’d be happy with one of these a couple of years down the line. Looks good in that colour.
Could you cope with half the power and no toys ?
@@chrisredfield3240 - well that’s the thing. That CBX, i had a 2019 which was comfy but the windshield got me down. The F900XR TE has a dynamic mode which transforms it. The quick shifter is great too. I just like the price of the CBX
Love watching your videos, always informative. My wife is not into biking but loves your laugh when you’re enjoying yourself 😅
Hello Dan.Thanks & well done . Ill get my CB500x next year . I'd like to see off road .... Ride safely !
I would like the indicator lights to be white. Being on all the time in yellow might look like your turning to a car driver a first glance
Really nice, looking forward to see you having this Honda for a forthcoming months; it would be great to see you doing something about that display to improve the readability of info
Dan .. I am just a fanboy of your reviews.. lovely to hear you out! From India!
Thank you my friend!
When we gettin the follow up vid Dan? This might replace my 2017.
Will be doing a final ride with it soon, as it's got to go back to Honda 😭
Really looking forward to Honda announcing it coming to the US. Few things I would appreciate seeing in a video during your times with it:
- How it is with a pillion passenger
- Get some bags/cases on it and see how the added weight effects the ride
- Get the opinion of someone a bit taller - 5’10” - 6’1” for how the ergonomics are for them
Great video, looking forward to more, subscribed to see where this goes.
I really like this bike. That jacket is pretty slick as well 😉
Looking forward to your long term review. Might be swapping My NC750X for one of these next spring.
I honestly think this would have benefited from the bronze engine covers with that green but that’s a personal choice. I would likely spend the time fixing that with black bolts just to humor myself
Started liking these videos before I’ve even watched them 😂
Good content. Quiet impressed with the bike. Need to organise a test ride.
Have just ordered a 2022 model which i should get either December or January. I look foreword to seeing more of this bike from you.
I think those are great looking machines. I'd own one in a second
How would you compare it to a Tracer 700 for example?
This video definitely persuaded my choice on my first bike
A good choice! :)
Tbh the tracer has 25 more horses, it will be a load faster, its also a few kilos lighter !
I'm sure it will be coming soon. Just make it fit right in the middle between the 500x and 1100L wire wheels of course
Thanks Dan! I was waiting for your review on this bike.
Honda this is a cool start, but a factory option with spoke wheels and knobby tires is what a lot of us want.
When I close my eyes and listen. it feels like a sports commentator talking about a motorcycle. Regards
It's look better than Indian version 🔥
Great review, watched it a few times... And decided to buy a cb500x because you did a great full review about this one...
So thank you 👌😎
Greetings from Steven Foets Belgium 🇧🇪
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review and hope you enjoy the 500X too!
Thinking of getting the 2022 model as my first bike, bang on the A2 rules, and at 6ft 3 anything smaller just isnt feasible for me.
Great choice! 👍
Beautiful color scheme!
As a new rider I am considering this my first real bike over my crf250l thanks for the review
Nice, thanks for watching! I'm hoping to test the CRF300 soon!
Thought the same thing with the color scheme. Definitely gives me Master Chief vibes!
Sweet ride, just thinking about spoke wheels and a higher exhaust can position. Great video as always!
I have a 2021 here in Brazil, wating this model arrive to change the mine.
Will you be taking it off road? Some light green lane's?
Good reveiw Dan.
I was looking forward to see some more videos on this bike.
More coming next week. :)
@@Englishbikerdan good man 👍🙂
Nice vlog bud. I'm interested in one of these as commuter and now thinking its ideal for a bit of touring! Ride safe
How is the windshield? Buffeting?
I don't understand why they didn't keep that gold/bronze engine cover from the 500F and 500R. It matches this color scheme perfectly! Maybe if you wanted an all-black model or a silver & black model, but those should be the exception
a very nice green, advanced technology with double disc brakes at the front and upside down fork ... but I'll keep my 500X model 2021 ... I've waited 7 months for it ... just wait that long because of all the new things ... never
I wish Honda put the engine from CB500X into the CRF450L frame. That would be my dream bike.
I would like to see how it is cruising 120 plus kph for a few hours, heated grips, and bark busters.
No problem imo
Hi Dan, between this or the Suzuki v storm 650, what would you choose?
Nice review of a nice bike. Thanks for posting/sharing. Cheers!
Perfectly timed for me. Cheers!
Looks great looking forward to your longer term review take care.
Thanks 👍
Nice review Dan, I've got the previous model booked for a week on a winter fly ride holiday. Never ridden one so hoping I've made the right decision. Looking at the range, the Honda will go 3 times as far as my MT10 on a tank of fuel!
Hey Richard, it'll have a little less poke than the MT10! :D I hope you enjoy your holiday, sounds like a fun way to ride a bike over winter!
Seems like a great second bike. One day I'll be rich enough to have a garage big enough.
Can you test the pillion for a passenger?
Good to hear you will have the bike for 3months. It would be good to get your feedback on its commuting abilities as you have a lot of experience in this area. I.e. real world mpg (not what the dash says), performance on motorway to city traffic, including filtering (handlebars/mirror height). What’s it like to manoeuvre in and out of a garage. What’s the rear suspension performance like with luggage or two up riding (try any soft luggage bag with some reasonable weight), is there an option to adjust the preload on the rear? What’s the adjustable windscreen like for your height. What add on would you consider…heated grips etc.
Great in depth review as always👍
Really nice bike - love the new colour. I'll look forward to seeing more.
I have the 2019 this has some great upgrades I wonder what it would cost to upgrade my front forks and brakes probably easier to trade up I guess ?
Good review. Look forward to seeing others - as I plan to get one of these in the new year. Definitely sold on the green colour too.
Smooth gear change by the look of it. I considered a new Africa Twin 1100, but too big, too heavy and too thirsty... I'll stick with the plan and go with the CB500X. I'll put on hand guards, centre stand, engine bars, Givi Trekker aluminium luggage and feel like I'll have a good all-rounder?
sounds like a plan! The 2022 model already comes with a centre stand.
Got a 2015 with rallyraid level1 susp. It is really great. Could of considerd a 2022 if it had been delivered with cruisecontrol and android auto . But no.
Good to see how it performs with a pillion & luggage.
"Kinda reminds me of Halo Master Chief color"
Aaah it's nice to hear someone say out loud lol.
